  • Social media has become so engraved in our day-to-day life, it actually seems strange if you meet someone who doesn’t have social media. We’re at the point where people even make social media profiles for their dogs and babies. A study published in April of 2021, showed that 82 percent of the population in the United States has had a social networking profile, which has consistently gone up since the year 2008.
This non-stop stream of communication and connection is no doubt impacting our mental health.

It’s so weird when you hear people don’t have a social platform 😅 people really citrate their pages of just the highlights and you just see the good stuff and not the bad times. Social media’s definitely changing our world.

Excellent vid. I work with youth daily and I see first hand the detrimental affects of social media. Keep up the great work!

As a social media researcher myself, I will says this video err on the side of correctness. But there are large gaps in your understanding of social media and its effects on mental health. Most media psychology, communication, information science, and psychology researcher would disagree with you on these things. 1)using social media is not taking away time for you to focuses on yourself. Adolescent, for example, using social media platform to engages in identity exploration. Crafting your own social media profile is also a self-presentation behaviors where you think about yourself. I would suggests you read articles by Professor Nicole Ellison on passive and active use of social media. Professor Patti Valkenburg does a lot of these research. Older studies from mass communication can also help your understanding. For example, articles published on media transportation, identification are really good, which informs a lot about current studies on social media. 2) Impacts of social media goes well beyond just well-being. Professor Cliff Lampe articles on social capital are good learn about. Professor Catalina Toma paper on emotional sharing of SNS are also good to learn about. In sum, deleting social media all together can be a really bad idea, with unforeseen consequences. All in all, as most meta-analysis on social media and its impacts on well-being showed. The impacts of social media on well-being is very minimal. For your reference, a famous meta-analysis done by Professor Jeff Hancock from Stanford does a really good summary.
