  • Check your cooling system fans and relays on a Fiat Ducato 1.9 TD 1999.
    I also wanted to fit a fan over-ride switch - for the long drag hills I could come up against in Scotland - which I hope to travel to before I peg it!

    Thanks for the video - saved me loads of time. The low temp fan ran continually after a journey and the only way to stop it was to tap the side of the relay box to release the relay contacts. I purchased another relay for €20, swopped it out and now all working fine. I opened the old relay and the contact had burnt out.

      Hi John. Glad it’s been of help. The relay takes a lot of current so the contacts can get welded together easily. I found that a switch in the cab to energise the relay before the temperature switch cut in was a great help in keeping the van running cooler up in the highlands of Scotland where I spent a full month…
      Good luck on your travels and look at my channel as I have loads of other tips in video. Best regards Peter

    I also have a 1.9td -01. Is the temp sensor in thermostat a M12 or M14?

    I have a 2001 Peugeot Boxer with the same fan and relay configuration. Currently, I'm facing an issue where neither of the fans are running. I've meticulously checked all the fuses and even experimented with the radiator sensor, which has three wires. Apparently, you connect one pair of wires, one fan should run, and when you connect another pair, both fans should run. However, despite these tests, the fans still refuse to operate. I've also tried the bulb trick across the same two connections on the relay box as you did, but the fan remained inactive. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

      Hi Mick. I would first go looking for the main power connection NOT for the relay coil. The relay should show 12v in the switching side (not to coil) if you can’t find it then there are 40A fuses up by the battery on the off side wing and perhaps that could be an issue.
      If a fuse has blown be sure to check to see the cause as it could be the motor has gone or some wiring has become damaged.
      The fans take a LOT of power but operate independently from the ignition so that if the engine is hot and you turn off the engine the fan continues to operate till the stat turns off the circuit.
      Just a case of digging I’m afraid. It’s always the earth of the relay coil that gets switched the relay contacts handle the heavy load.
      Regards Peter

    One of the temp sensors seems to have failed for me after a bit of a hill, couldn't have picked a better place to break down in Spain... luckily i have heaps of lifepo4 battery, inverter and charger so am just charging the starter... while I'm here I'm thinking to just add a relay or switch to disconnect the (lower radiator?) temperature sensor when ignition is off? Fans have been a nuisance on two occasions, one at a border crossing when nobody can hear eachother with the fan roaring even with engine off... Temperature on dash reads fine and fans usually shut down after 5 mins parked, but today I was pulling relays from under the dash searching (fruitlessly) for an easy off switch, and it ran the ageing starter battery low... Anyway... engine running again now and charging via alternator... waiting for the fan(s) to kick in so I can see which temp sensor wire I should splice... Not using a timed relay while bypassing ignition seems a bit of an oversight by whoever designed this system.

      Hi Brent. I have now changed both relays as they don’t cost much and also next is the temperature switch is next - looking front the front you will find it located at the bottom of the radiator R/H side. Look for the wires going to it which is not hard to find. I have got radiator flush and also recommended glycol ethanol antifreeze concentrate which is also a help to cool the engine as well. That should mean it will run a bit cooler… Thanks for taking the time to comment and loads more videos I’ve made that may help you on my channel so if you subscribe you can always find me.
      Also run the Facebook group “Mobilvetta Driver52 motorhome group” which has the same engine as you (1.9td + 2.4 and 2.8 diesel).

      Hi there. The fans are both fed via 2 relays situated in a box at the top of the radiator. The thermostats only energise the relay coil.
      The fan current is very high so it’s fed from the same electrical feed that goes to the starter motor… I am not aware of any in line fuse used with the fan supply as it would need to be far larger than the fuses contained in the glove box…
      Sorry I can’t help any further but all layouts are different on different years and makes…

    Hi, nice video. Can u please tell me what's the PIN of your relay that you sent the earth to?

    • @brucepeter2007
      @brucepeter2007  10 місяців тому

      Hi Alessandro. On the plug in relay you will usually see a diagram showing where the relay COIL pins are. Use a multimeter on the corresponding relay socket pins to check for the 12v positive supply which is live to the relay socket base all the time (straight from battery) the negative Earth is the opposite pin so the 12v supply goes through the relay coil which energies your switch….
      Personally to save issues knock up the 12v x 21W bulb and a lead like I show in the video - that way you can always “feel” your way through electrics without causing blown fuses and damage… Regards Peter

    Hi great video and thanks for posting.
    I have exactly the same problem on my 2001 Ducato. How do you identify the earth pin from the two pins that you performed the test on?
    I presume it's the one on the left, pin 30 (as you look at the pins).
    Hope you can help. Cheers

    • @brucepeter2007
      @brucepeter2007  Рік тому

      Hi Gareth. If you check on the video and make up the simple test bulb lead you should be able to clearly find out the Earth and power lead without doing ant possible damage as the load bulb will light instead of burning anything out.
      As yours is not the same year as mine the wiring could (probably is) be different so only there is no easy way (Safeway) to tell what pin to use.

    Great instructional video, many thanks. I bought a Pilote D34 motorhome last year (I've had Hymers in the past)and it came with the little 1.9TD engine, great for fuel economy, not so good for hills. It's the middle of summer now and I've noticed that the big fan comes on when I turn the engine off. It then stays on for a minute or so and then goes off. Is that normal? I've not noticed any lights on the dash come on or the temp guage go up (I've not even looked at the guage to be honest). The other day after turning the engine off, the fan stayed on about a minute, went off, then after about five seconds came back on for a few seconds then went off. Does this sound like a failing temp sensor somewhere/ Thanks for any help anybody might offer.

    • @brucepeter2007
      @brucepeter2007  Рік тому

      Hi Fred. On hot days or when you stop after the engine has been worked hard the cooling fan can come on after the engine stops as the heat builds up BUT. always best to listen till the fan stops as the fan by-passes the ignition so if your thermostat sticks on you will come back to a flat battery.
      Mine started to act up which is why I changed the stat and I have no issues with the fan running now after the engine has worked hard so I do suspect my stat was showing signs of failing and I replaced said stat. Since then I have been told that the stat sticking so the fan stayed on was a common fault…

    Hi Peter
    Another good video and fortuitously I may have same problem. Noticed driving from Scotland down to England last month . Engine overheating, especially on the hills. Engine certainly working hard going up them. Usually sits at 90..but was going upto 100 with warning light coming on....on stopping noted coolant just looked like water, so thought it was maybe because no proper coolant in it. That and fact it was really warm day.
    So I've booked it in to get system flushed...but seeing this video , I do wonder if it maybe more like your experience.

      Hi there. Your the first reply. You could do as you said but it always better to only mess about a bit.
      Didn't want to do that as if you were in traffic instead of just the one smaller fan coming on both would start and the battery drain would be high which is why I elected to do it the way I did.

    • @brucepeter2007
      @brucepeter2007  3 роки тому +3

      Hi there. I have fitted a new radiator so it’s only in heavy traffic in last years heatwave that the fan was coming on but as I want to try the dales and Scotland I think I need to be prepared. The engines in motorhomes work harder than they would in a van because they are loaded to over 3 tons unlike a delivery van that goes out loaded for delivery and empties over the course of the vans round.
      Just hope I manage to get my dream which is Scotland.

      @@petetimbrell3527 Hi Peter. The Earth wire from the dash switch goes to the Earth on the relay socket that way it still says functional via the thermal switch as per normal or by using the switch on the dashboard the relay can be overridden at will - my main fan stays on a lot and even comes on going up a hill on the motorway. I’m not losing water and I have a new radiator and a new water pump. It’s doing a lot of work that little 1.9 engine…
