A bonus 24-minute video walk-through of Inverie is available to watch over on my Patreon page: www.patreon.com/ruthaisling
On Patreon, I tend to share early access to the videos before they are posted here on UA-cam. I also share longer and uncut versions of some of my videos and occasional bonus videos! I usually film videos 4-6 weeks in advance but on Patreon you'll know what projects I'm working on weeks before I share the videos here on UA-cam.
You'll also get access to my Scotland Google Map which has 200+ pins of places I've visited and recommend in Scotland.
However you’d like to support the channel, whether through Patreon or by watching and subscribing on UA-cam, I’d like to thank you for supporting my work! ❤

@@mrneutral8423well perhaps you should know the history of Tasmania, this is perhaps the first island that genocide was comitted against an entire indigenous population to make it uninhabited until Australians began occupying it . 180,000 people were murdered for this to take place . It's a beautiful island but the Australian government has created a historical memorial for this island

I have the same issues with my kneecaps. Have you had surgery? I’ve had two arthroscopic surgeries on each knee & did help for a while. I’m 71 now & have to get one knee replacement soon.
I love to go on nature trails but, like you, can’t go too far. We have amazing trails here in western Washington & all the mountain hikes! Even a couple of rain forests, particularly the Hoh Rain Forest. This is near Forks which is more than just Twilight! 😅
I’m going to Edinburgh in December so hoping to find a tame trail or two.

Great video. Been to Knoydart twice, both times stayed on the campsite at Inverie. First time was in a heatwave, the second time was last October, waking up to the sounds of stags bellowing, the waves and oystercatchers calling. And late enough in the year to avoid the midges! Magic place. Hiked up sgurr coire chonnichean, the corbett that you see behind the campsite as well. The old forge has had a major upgrade as well, sometime last year. They didn't serve food before that, lots of venison dishes as expected, all absolutely superb.

Great video. Brings back memories of when I made the same trip in 1989.... the Munro is called Ladhar Bheinn (pronounced "Larven"), which I climbed en route to Inverie. The pub was much rougher back then....

Oh that I could go into a village shop and buy venison like that. I live in rural France and we have a big problem with deer and also boar. They are hunted, but not very efficiently. Don't even dream of a vegetable garden; it'll be destroyed. And the meat is kept by the hunters for their freezers. But what a beautiful part of the world you've shown us. Amazing what a community can achieve

Install a farmer's style "electric fence" and it will protect your garden from wild deer and boar. Note you want a proper real electric fence controller (some small models use just "D" size torch batteries). Many electric fence controllers are adjustable (Low, medium or High shocking power) . If necessary you can set them to maximum, ie "stud bull during mating season" . Be aware that although safe for humans and legal for use, under very rare circumstances some domestic horses have died after being caught up in electric fences and unable to move away. Sometimes the electric fence conductor is incorporated into a kind of nylon ribbon, but there are various kinds. A good Earth connection is necessary for the Earth connection wire. . Usually one or more metal pipes are hammered deep into the soil nearby.

Hi, I just happened to see your comment & wanted to recommend another channel you might enjoy, which is @garyeats. He is such a lovely guy & he does these great restaurant reviews around the UK. There are alot of people there too that find his to be a great "comfort" channel. Gary, along with Ruth's channel are my two favourites on UA-cam & I don't miss an upload from either of them. Anyway, sorry when I saw your comment, just thought it was worth mentioning. 😊

In 2018, I flew to Inverness and stayed in the village of Beauly. It was part of my research for a children’s storybook I wrote, about an eight-year-old boy called Westie who takes the train from Beauly and has different adventures. Beauly is famous for having the shortest platform in the UK. In 2021, I self-published the book. 😊

It’s disgusting what my so called English forefathers did to the highlanders … one local family, the Levison Gowers who had land up in Scotland who were part of the forces driving the clearances lives near me in Shropshire and in a nearby village called Lilleshall, allegedly when the Duke of Sutherland died, his ‘grateful’ tenants erected a large stone monolith on the nearby hill. Funnily enough it was struck by lightening twice shortly after its construction… there is an inscription on it and I will let the reader make up their own minds about the type of people this family were:
To the memory of George Granville Leveson Gower, K.G. 1st Duke of Sutherland. The most just and generous of landlords. This monument is erected by the occupiers of his Grace's Shropshire farms as a public testimony that he went down to his grave with the blessings of his tenants on his head and left behind him upon his estates the best inheritance which a gentleman of England can bequeath to his son; men ready to stand by his house, heart and hand.
I wonder what the tenants of the highlands who were driven out would have made of these words?

Just caught up with this video after watching your Kinloch Hourn to Barrisdale video. This has taken me back to my first Knoydart visit, way back in May 1979 - boat from Mallaig via Inverie to the head of Loch Nevis, and several days staying in the former outdoor centre there, trying to bag some Munros. Although it was May, it was very wintry, snowflakes the size of saucers when we landed, and sadly lots of dead deer because of the unseasonal snow and cold. A hike over to Inverie and back, no Old Forge pub then unfortunately. But a tremendous expedition nevertheless, culminating in a massive hike back to Mallaig via Loch Morar. Great to find all these memories stimulated by your video, Ruth.

Hi Ruth, You have mentioned that you would like some suggestions. One thought is that in the U.S. we have concerns about drinking water directly from streams, because of the prevalance of Giardia. We always boil water before we use it. Another idea is installing a carbon monoxide detector in your vehicle, "Ernie", especially since you use diesel fuel and a gas stove inside. A fire extinguisher is another consideration. We enjoy your episodes and wish you all of the best!

Thank you for another lovely guided tour in and around another beautiful hideaway village. Your luck at spotting Otters sounds about as good as my luck at seeing a Platypus here in Australia. We did the Ft William to Mallaig return day trip on the Jacobite Express and absolutely loved every moment. It was a highlight of our first trip to Scotland.
