Same here, but I don't think I'd go out of my way to buy an additional bit of equipment for the nasal experience. If VR tech eventually added Smell-o-vision as standard in the same way that, say, vibration has become a standard inclusion for controllers, I'd definitely use it.
for company try make this, player just need basic background ambient scent, example sea, forest, city, cave different house or room, its just for adventure game or explore place or Minecraft , for player can feel and have memory. like shop use perfume and bread or food shop. start with that dont need to be specific items 👍
I remember making my own smell-o-vision back when yachts were added to GTAO. I taped an ocean water scented Yankee candle car jar to a fan and pointed it towards me. It massively increased immersion and it's one of my most memorable gaming experiences
Smell is very attached to memory. I would think it would be far more useful for a camera to be able to capture the smell, and then being able to recreate that when you want to reminisce
Except no, because smell doesn't distribute like light or sound, it is gasses floating around so you can have the scent of fresh grass on a meadow in one spot and take just one step for a whiff of cow instead.
a tiny scratch-and-smell card inserted into a facemask that doesn't just adhere to your face but rather dangles off of a vr headset like the apple vision pro, would be perfect, if it can be scratched by the vr headset using some kind of tiny actuator and lever. the player can just swap it out whenever and if they don't like it, or get tired of it, never use it. its like, really cost effective too, compared to gallons of perfum.
I totally remember going to the movies, If I'm not mistaken, it was the Rugrats movie and they gave out cards that had the scratch to sniff at certain points in the movie. That or it was The Wild Thornberries movie. Boy if I had a spare card that wasn't used I wonder what it'd be worth.
They used to make parodies in the 90's about future cable TV being capable of bringing the smell to content. I'm not sure about cable, but looks like the smell part is here.
I don't think I would like smell in games. I do remember going to an interactive 3D movie one time where a flock of birds flew overhead and they dropped water droplets on us to simulate bird poo. 😂
They have had these systems for YEARS -- as well as taste systems. They never get anywhere because it turns out that people don't want to smell an orc's armpit.
We went to Disney before and they had bugs life in the theater and when stuff would happen on screen there would be smells sprayed into the theater. It was alright but not really needed ha ha
Leisure Suit Larry 7. Half the scents were ... disgusting in some way. (one of them was "fart", another was "diesel fuel") Like I get the allure of possibly having certain scents in a video game, but I think there is a very heavy line in the sand about what scents should be in a game, because something like the smell of burned coffee, or someone smoking pot ("skunk" smell) might make someone vomit in seconds. If a scent is a food, it might trigger an allergy (cause some people have had reactions this way), or it might make someone sick or hungry. If a scent is a non-food (Eg gasoline, grass, rotting flesh) it might also make someone sick. I'd say there are potentially maybe 20 scents that are viable, that we commonly smell: Food/People: - Coconut/Suntan lotion - Cherry, Raspberry and Strawberry ("berry" smell) - Orange, Lemon, Lime and Grapefruit (Citrus/acidic) - Grape/Wine smell - Fried Potato/Potato chip/French Fries (deep frying) - Corn/Popcorn/Buttered popcorn - Fish (fresh) - Women's expensive perfume (alcohol) - Men's expensive cologne (alcohol) Environment: - Fresh cut Grass (Kentucky Bluegrass) - Pine/Spruce/Douglas Fir (Evergreen conifer trees) - Ocean (salt water) - Candle/matches (sulfur) - Burning wood Gross smells: - Stale tobacco - Stale beer - Garbage - Skunk/Cannabis - Fish (dead) - 2-stroke gasoline fuel (lawn mower/outboard boat motor) These are all off the top of my head, now intensity of certain smells should be controlled like volume controls. Foods would be like a 1.0, where as environments might be a 1.5 but gross smells might be a 0.25. Because I don't want to play a game that is gonna make me vomit every time I go into a zombie environment. Hell, I would probably disable the system entirely. But on the flip side of that, a game like Cooking Simulator can't possibly simulate 1000 different food dishes smells, but it should be able to replicate the major smells of a kitchen, fruity smells, vegetable smells, deep frying, baking, melting butter, fish, etc. Likewise playing something like Pacific Drive would likely be exclusively Evergreen, Grass, gasoline and the occasional garbage smell.
I have some very naughty furry video games that i would absolutely not want to smell. Or... hmmm... Honestly they would have a niche but giant market worldwide if they did feet and armpits. Not for me, but there are those people out there waiting for something like this to come along. Im just spitballing ideas where they could corner a market.
I do really like smell effects when I experience them in theme park rides, but I think it might be tricky to implement into video games because of how much variety there is Edit: also fun fact, there is a vrchat convention that sometimes sells room sprays that fit the environment that it's set in. I actually thought it was really interesting how it gave a unique vibe to the setting
For optimal immersion, I envision a separate omnidirectional speaker positioned upwards towards the ceiling exclusively for ambient sounds that don't require positioning, complemented by standard stereo speakers for the remaining audio. By segregating the channels in this manner, we can enhance overall audio quality while eliminating the need for rear/side speakers, which often present challenges in terms of both wiring and aesthetics. *This comment was rewritten without grammatical errors by ChatGPT*
“Omnidirectional” “Upwards towards the ceiling” That sure is an interesting concept. Also, you do need rear speakers if you want to hear what’s happening behind you as actually coming from behind you. Unless maybe with binaural audio but you need headphones for that to work. Also, it would be more work for programmers. Stereo is fine.
@@blackfowl75 Even though they all look ugly AF, the concept of the speaker already exists, and some games already have a separate slider for ambient sound. It's the audio output/channel separation that we need to figure out.
@@GuillaumeLT What I meant is that you can’t have an omnidirectional speaker be directed at anything. By definition, it is not directional. Also, I’m not sure how the stereo field is affected and the average room acoustics would probably not make it sound very good. And in games, the problem is not separating sounds, as that is quite trivial. It’s panning the sound correctly. And regarding the outputs, as it stands, either you have a surround system and the game supports it, or you’re basically in stereo. I haven’t seen a lot of games with surround support. And even less people with actual surround systems.
It's funny how we don't even have an RGB-like model of scent. We would be limited by a selection of specific smells. Like imagine a "monitor" that comes with 10 possible images and just flips between them as needed.
since vr headsets are already right by your nose, they could add some kind of scratch and sniff ribbon that goes under your nose on a conveyor belt system. Different cartridges for different games and it would automatically switch scents for different environments, and automatically scratch it to activate the scent.
I think that the best way to have a standardized set of scents would be to completely do away with using essential oils that are dispensed, and instead find a way to stimulate the smell receptors in the nose (or the neurons responsible for processing smell in the brain). Now, if only we could find a way to stimulate those individual receptors. Who knows, maybe perhaps something like Neuralink could even be used to excite those receptors/nerve cells (though, to be honest... I'm not a big fan of having a chip inserted into my brain, lol). So it has to be something that you can easily put on or off (like with a VR headset).
I remember my first immersion was watching something on TV back in the early to mid 1980's with a scratch card that you had to scratch when the programme required it. I think smelly games could be a thing, but only real immersion would be in VR, so I could see it taking off in that genre before just normal video games on a display will adopt it. but would you really want to be behind someone in the food court when they let 1 rip?!!

If a game developer worked with them and released scent packs tuned to a specific game, I could see it being a good way to increase immersion or even a really good experience. Truthfully, I would love it if they would cut back on in game micro-transactions to sell scent refills for the games that somebody might spend several hundred or a thousand plus hours in, at least the money would be going to an actual consumable. just open any modern triple-A game (like Starfield) and fart
ok but why do I keep smelling shit and piss when I play good games, like Zelda or something. Is my smellovision broken?
