3 BODY PROBLEM: Brains in space, an alien invasion & the Cultural Revolution - Nerd Legion Ep. 24

- Netflix's adaptation of The Three Body Problem, originally a novel in Chinese by Liu Cixin, provides audiences with a fun, if flawed, hard science-fiction show. Created by D. B. Weiss and David Benioff of Game of Thrones fame, many actors from their previous series also are cast here alongside other sci-fi acting staples. The premise of the show is strong, but some of the character interactions and story arcs come across as quite saccharine or cheesy. We still recommend this show since the fun parts outweigh the drudgery.

DoA buying a star for the show is hilarious XD great review! will probably check out the show just to have some fun times to get the bad shows out of my mind
Actually both the Staircase Project and the Wallfacer Project are described as silly at some point in the books, but their results turn out to be absolutely mind blowing. However, the general audience will only understand how good Episode 6 (currently with the lowest rating) is after the whole series (4 seasons likely) ends in a few years.
I know other comments already addressed this, but the Will/Jin love story and his brain getting sent into space is one of the main plot points of the series and has an incredible payoff that leads to a mind-blowing revelation way down the line. This story gets truly grand in scope and wildly trippy. Everything you've seen so far is basically just the prologue for the actual story that makes the books so popular.
I agree that Weiss & Benioff are decent at adapting work without having to write their own stuff. Problem is that in contrast to the books, they added this whole friend group in Oxford and thus changed most of the main characters and their storylines to some young, cool science guys with relationship problems that feel flat and constructed. Those characters (so the stuff they added to the show) were actually the weakest parts of the show in my opinion. And then they cut details like the more nuanced philosophical discussions and implications in the first book.
On the other hand, I think adapting these books to a show isn't easy because of the structure and changing time periods and main characters. Maybe it was neccessary to change some stuff in that regard. It just feels like on all those main stream american shows, there always has to be some love interest, relationship drama and "fun" groups of friends...
The problem with the show and its ideas is that it is pretty much impossible to put all of whats in the books into a show. I am very much wondering how exactly they will continue with it.
I highly highly recommend reading the books (or watching the Chinese show, which is actually available for free on UA-cam and has much better character development). They are fascinating reads for the Sci-Fi in it AND I think Monte would love the parts that go back in time.
Just a heads up only the first two episodes are now free, but yeah it was all free like when it came out
If you want to see Wong play an utterly despicable character watch the original Top Boy. Truly loathsome character.
Never forget John Bradley was the conspiracy theorist who was right the whole time in moonfall about the moon being a secret mega structure.
Wade/Da Shi are the highlights for me. Good show, hope netflix renews
the Steam notification at 28:04 confused the hell outta me
It sounds like they combine all three book. Book one tries to create the setting of the universe, it explains why how aliens know about earth, why they are invading and how human get to know the invasion. But the way that author did it is all over the place and made it super confusion. Book 2 is actually really good, it explains dark forest theorem, human’s resistance against aliens, and how much aliens technology more advance than human. However the biggest problem with book 2 is that aliens are too advance that ending is super let down that kills the interest for me. Book 3 is way too broad, it is not just the finale between human and alien but also about the ending of the universe. My problem is that the ending is super open ended. Like it foreshadow there might be a fk up, but will not give the ending so you do not know if it is matter or not.
This series is actually “the three body problem for dummies”.
Benedict Wong was a character in prey2017 that's the first thing I think of every time I see him. Great game.
Loved the show, loved it so much I then read all three books in 3 weeks 😂 Now that I’ve read the books I can tell you the judgement day episode is not the red wedding of GoT…wait for season two 😏 I personally really enjoyed the will episodes and the slower pace after ep5.
Also I don’t think it’s that unbelievable how even supposedly smart people could be stupid sometimes. I mean just look at covid and how people reacted to wearing masks and vaccines. I also question the guys taste in cinema if he considers Tokyo Drift as good…
Tbh if you read the book(s) the show is a big let down. Overall the only okayish character was Da Shi and the rest idk was kinda cringe? Will watch the chinese version soon and see if it is any better
Da Shi is the man in the books
@@jakobsrensen1684 he's so well written ye but the other characters too actually haha
can't wait for the next season? put your hand on the floor
Also, all the good ideas are from the book
whats going on? would appreciate more takedowns of bad takes .
good episode :D Thank you. parts that interested me - 2,3 and last one.
i loved the chinese series !
Comment for the algorithm
I enjoyed this show so much i want to know what happens next so I'm just going to read the books, can't wait for slow ass Netflix
Sorry to inform you :( but the show has most likely thrown some spoilers at you for the books. Only read book 1 and 2 so far, really good read very interesting :)
@@Itzpapa not really, other than the aliens reveal everything else will be new to him because of the name/gender/race swapping and some characters that were added in or left out
Will, Jin, Jack and Wade are book 3 characters.
@@CxerRy96 wallfacer project is book 2, staircase project and sophon as a character is book 3. So there are some things that are not really exactly in order as how the books handles them.
@@Itzpapa that is true but from my experience of going from show to book (did this with expanse, got, etc.) while you understand the major story beats the journey is still way different and more interesting in books than in the tv, so no loss
In the book the game was just an mmorph game, you don't need invitation, you just need to get a VR set and haptic suit to play. The game was too boring for general gamers as it's not thrilling and required advanced knowledge in physics to play, those who stayed mostly scientist, elite intellectual, and business man. And the alien didn't involved in creating the game, it was created by the ETO as a recruitment tool to bring more of the human elites into their organization.
The show has its flaws, but I have to agree, the premise and some of the concepts you talked about make for an enjoyable watch.
Duh.....We didn't read the book ::drool::
Im not sure if you guys noticed but the NASA guy that had a mohawk style haircut is a real NASA systems engineer named Bobak Ferdowsi, hes well known figure at NASA.
👍
The funniest shit about the show is that the book version whole group of friends main characters is just like 2 Chinese dudes.
Nerd Legion Prime 🤣!
algorithm!
Prime episode
Wade and Da Shi are by far the best characters in the show and probably the only reason to watch it. Outside of the crazy nonsense science in the story that isn't told very well.
You could milk shows for much more content by doing an episode-by-episode review instead of whole reviews. Would be a bit more on the reactive side but you wouldn't have to watch hours upon hours of content just for one video. And there are shows like the original Avatar the Last Airbender where I would be very interested in episode reviews as it continues.
This show is a result of trying to make incredible hard sci-fi into soft sci-fi.
its gonna be truly funny if they keep the plot point of earth being doomed because a woman gets put in charge of its main defense mechanism
What if I tell you that it was originally a male character until Cixin Liu got yelled by his editor that he's got too many men in his stories and needs a female lead for Book 3 to change it up a bit.
@@roastpork5437 what if i tell you that it is made explicit in the book that it is the characters feminine qualities that doom earth, ofc feminine qualities later saves the universe so there is that.
Couldn't get past the first episode, hated the show
