I grew up in the 80s and these kind of riffs and melodies are ingrained in my brain forever. I always thought of them as easy to play until i learned on UA-cam in the past 10 years that the guys behind make up and silly clothes were actual guitar gods. All of them!
Exactly! Nowadays seems like most guitar players only know how to add strings to the guitars, find different ways to tune… All kind of different things other than learn to play with Melody. I can’t stand all the screamo music with just wall-to-wall CHUNKA CHUNKA CHUNKA guitar and lightning fast drums…. I have never ever heard one of those songs… not one, and walked away from it singing it or wanting to go back and listen to it again. I’m sorry, but I’m not sorry for saying this but when I hear it, I just can’t wait till it’s over. I’ll like melody… good rhythms that you could feel in your spirit man…
I've definitely heard this scale a lot when I was playing in the 80s L.A. metal scene and used it myself. I didn't really think much about this hybrid scale at the time, but this is a good lesson that takes it apart. There were a lot of things we players picked up from each other in those days but didn't really think about. But it's good to think about it and see what's going on there because that way it can be used to greater effect. The reason so many players were using minor keys in those days was because it was an easy way to make a song more dramatic. A lot of songs would even start out in major keys then switch to minor for the solo just to add more drama.
I love most genres of metal, thrash, black metal, melodic death metal, nwbhm etc. 80's hair bands are my go to! They just had a vibe that makes them stand out. If course it wasn't cool anymore in the nu-metal alternative world of the early 2000's. Thanks man!
Awesome - the intro, and lesson. The first solo I learned properly was for Ozzy's Flying High Again, with of course, the late great Randy Rhoads. I was learning music theory at the same time, and noticed he was doing this. It's right after the repeating blues lick that starts the solo, and then he goes (in the key of F# minor): 15, 14, 12 on the high E string, followed by 15, 13, 12 on the B string, followed by 15, 14, 12 on the G string, and then he continues descending for a bit with pentatonic/blues scale notes. That's one thing that I loved about learning Randy's stuff... his relatively formulaic approach made it very easy to see what scales he was using. It was fantastic for a newly soloing player because I could easily tie it back to the theory behind it (unlike my other early hero, Van Halen... Ed was all over the place LOL). Okay, thanks for letting me geek out... later, Robert! :)
The 80's metal licks just seem to have more soul !! They are the basis for today's modern shredders ,they just don't realize it !! LOL Keep bringing it , bro !! Love it !!
That black and orange crackle painted guitar is my favorite looking guitar that I've ever seen. Between the pickup locations, headstock and paintjob it's just something I would dream of having and when I buy my first kit guitar this will be my inspiration when deciding what to do with it
O.K. Theres no easy way to say this so ill just say it. It seems to me that every time Robert Baker shows me a kick ass lesson,,theres another guy right behind him showing the same lesson (or close) not to mention any names but it rhymes with camaron cooper. Anybody else see this pattern???. Robert ? Your the shiznit. Keep on rockin it Brody.
Love the 80s videos! Robert your videos are really special. Last year your videos got me back into guitar playing after a long period of avoiding it. I also got married last year and got confident enough to play a song at my wedding to my wife with the wedding band. Played Def Leppard's Pour some sugar on me, not too complex, but i felt i had the confidence to go for it! Was an incredible day i'll never forget. Thanks for the inspiration and keep on rocking up my man!
I am new to Rob's work but he is instantly my favorite teacher on the interweb. Quick tip: If you want to see what Rob is like when he is drunk, set the playback speed to 50%!
Thanks for this cool scale! Wow, it really does sound like 80s metal. Idk if this was intentional or not, but the little riff you did at 3:20 is actually like Ozzy's Shot in the Dark
It's pretty tough to not automatically play the minor penatontic because that's pretty much all I've been doing. but on the other hand, these 80's guys were what really inspired to begin playing
Hey duder! Really diggin the 80's greasy-groove thang!!! I'm guilty of the "G"-string thing (LMAO) Having grown up in the 80's learning the licks of Rhoads, Lynch, Demartini, Jake E Lee & the rest - you really had to put in the woodshed time because there were so many "Iconic" (See how did that nod) players, that you really had to have your chops nice & sharp ready to shred metal shards of greasy-chewy melodic-rock swagger!!! Duder YOU are the king of "Greasy-chewy Melodic-Rock Swagger" brother! Your note choices & phrasing are always perfect & the tone YOU have that comes through your music is impeccable! We would've RULED the Strip back in '85 my young brother! Keep doing the good stuff!!!!!!!!!!🤘😁🤘
Man! Rob, you are one of my favorite guitar players. I loved the 80s. I play 6 string bass and I wish we lived close together so we could jam together. We would ROCK!!! We would be tearin it up. I was playin along with Johnny P.back then. I love Dream Theater. Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that Im a BIG fan of yours and I really love your playin. Peace out brother!
Robert this is a great explanation of what was popular in the 80s. The 80s guitar peaked. Very few really good guitar parts in music today. You may help keep it alive. Cheers James.
I got to say, that your soloing for the 80's stuff has a lot of similarities to the awesome Harem Scarem guitarist, Peter Lesperance. You have your own style, but those solos on so many video, reminds me of how Peter does it. you are BOTH great guitarists. I learn a lot from your videos. Keep up the 80's lessons - love it. if you can, great if you are able to do any cool Harem Scarem songs...
Really digging the metal Mondays! Also really looking forward to rock n roll bootcamp part II and the metal course. I am ready to give you my money so Cmon with it! lol
Awesome lesson man! Can you please expand on how to use this across the neck and in different keys? I really have trouble understanding how to use scales to write. Thank you man, keep up the killer work
Yet another video of yours in my favorites list. I have hundreds of your videos I keep coming back to. And I bought all of your lessons also which are fantastic. Highly recommanded. Can't wait for an 80's metal course.
I just had a revelation in my head. I can use any spot on the fret board! For some reason it sounds like I can’t find a wrong note for any shape. I know that’s not true in reality but theoretically because my ear hears the note Im in naturally I won’t hit the wrong note. I’ve always held back from playing a spot I wasn’t sure if when really I can go crazy and it all works. I love 80s rock
Hey gang happy Hair Metal Monday to you all. The 80s course will be here before you know it :)
80s course? Yes please!
Sign me up!
Yeah I'm gonna be buying that one 👀
count me in!!!!!
I cant wait for a 80s course! You go!!
I'm glad there is still someone, still teaching the 80"s style
The Only style!
The best

Word, once I actually tried to play some Ratt I'm like how the hell do you play this let alone write it into existence
@@grimeyhonkyracing3938that was the lay it down intro riff for me

Duuude, literally every intro you make could be a hit song
This one in particular. This was incredible.
Truth!
Hell yeah!
Hair metal is my absolute favourite era of guitar. Nothing can top the feeling and emotion it emits.

I always think of Robert as a time-traveler from the 80's.

Randy was a true genius when it came to music theory
This is awesome!!! Loving the 80s stuff. I may have to grow my old mullet back. Lol
Still my absolute favorite era of music and especially guitar music.
Me, too. But mine will be a combover mullet. Gonna start a new trend! Lol
Business at the front, party at the back 🤘

That opening lead is probably one of the tastiest jams I've ever heard. I keep coming back to this video.
O.K. Theres no easy way to say this so ill just say it. I love that your clip transitions use the sounds that are a throw back to those old van Halen lesson videos . The dive bombs and such.
Man, that was the coolest, cleanest and by far my favorite intro of yours!!!
That is the most useful thing I've learned since the minor pentatonic scale. Love the 80s! Thank you!
One of my favourites is G E O R G E L Y N C H
This is awesome Robert! Looking forward for this 80's full course, Hair Metal Mondays it's definitely my favourite section! Keep on Rockin'.
Love 80s, never stop!!!
Love the 80s chord sound. Can’t get enough of it!

Plays the most melodic intro ive heard on the channel.
" Well howdy everybody" like nothing just happened lol.
Thanks for this cool scale! Wow, it really does sound like 80s metal. Idk if this was intentional or not, but the little riff you did at 3:20 is actually like Ozzy's Shot in the Dark
Amazing intro !! Metal Monday !! Definitely can't wait for the 80's Tutorial. The licks in this intro are Ass-kicking ! 🎸
It's pretty tough to not automatically play the minor penatontic because that's pretty much all I've been doing. but on the other hand, these 80's guys were what really inspired to begin playing
80s were best time for metal. So few good hard 'n heavy bands nowadays, only djent and "core" shit :s
Can't wait for the course!
Excellent lesson with a great little tune that tied everything together 😁🤙
yeah I'm back again. XD
Amazing playing, Robert.
I love your playing! S.o. relaxed and easy looking!
One of your best lessons IMO! I love your tone and phrasing!
Thanks for not bogging us down with the names of each individual note like so many lessons do Lol
Just love it, After a hard day work this is the first thing I Click on. Can't wait for the coarse!!!! Thanks!!
Your Charvel is one of the few I’ve seen with the same pickup configuration as mine I got in 1989. I really love that single coil for Bluesy sounds.
This is awesome! thank you Robert!
Two of the same note on different strings makes the scale sound right to me. It’s actually very useful once you start shredding, and it looks cool.
You will interact differently with both said notes also, so much so that many popular songs use both, sounding like two completely different notes
80’s course? Yes, please!
Yep.....fair to say it over due.
OMG I cannot wait for the full course!!!!!!
Love your axe collection brotha. Super jelly.
Hey duder! Really diggin the 80's greasy-groove thang!!! I'm guilty of the "G"-string thing (LMAO)

Robert this is a great explanation of what was popular in the 80s. The 80s guitar peaked. Very few really good guitar parts in music today. You may help keep it alive. Cheers James.
This is a great lick with awesome note choices!
Thanks bro ...🤙
LOVE your videos man! Very inspiring and giving me a fresh canvas to explore. Thank you!
Love this little series, my favourite era of music!
During your lead playing, I was reminded of Nick Johnston a time or 2 😁👍🏻👍🏻
I got to say, that your soloing for the 80's stuff has a lot of similarities to the awesome Harem Scarem guitarist, Peter Lesperance. You have your own style, but those solos on so many video, reminds me of how Peter does it.

LOVE that Charvel but the volume pot would do my head in. I’d be adjusting it accidentally on every strum!
Waiting for your 80s metal course 😁
This could be the greatest video of all time.
Just HAD to come back to this video to re-hear the INTRO...three times REPEAT! LOL
Thanks, Robert!!!! Great stuff! I can't wait to test it out!!!!
Great 80s spirit on the intro Robert.

The thumb action🤯
Awesome lesson man! Can you please expand on how to use this across the neck and in different keys? I really have trouble understanding how to use scales to write. Thank you man, keep up the killer work
That red guitar looks so beautiful
Intro was freakin sick!
Thanks for the crucial content dude you Rock.
Another sweet intro!
Fantastic video great licks loves the 80s 👍😎
This scale exists within the music theory, itself. It's an altered scale, and it's called Aeolian b5 or Locrian #2. It only ommits the Major 5th note.
Yet another video of yours in my favorites list. I have hundreds of your videos I keep coming back to. And I bought all of your lessons also which are fantastic. Highly recommanded. Can't wait for an 80's metal course.
Dude thank you for that!
Oh that's a tasty intro ...80s course I'm in. What format will it be in dvd or streaming or...nice red super strat too🤘
Thanks, for the vids. The intro was cool. I am curious about what you used to put it together, specifically rhythm and recording.
Did he just say “ a full 80’s course “ ?
Deal me in Bob 👍🇬🇧😂
I just had a revelation in my head. I can use any spot on the fret board! For some reason it sounds like I can’t find a wrong note for any shape. Sick opening riff bro!!
80's course is a must! Sign me up NOW!
Sound amazing!
It would also help to use a chorus pedal. That was a typically 80's guitar sound.
Back in time , to the great 80s
Love the 80"s stuff
Is your free fretboard decoder course & tabs for this still available? The links 404 from here :(
Really like that intro.
