Hi George, Eric once again. I have just updated my version of Google Earth and searched Famagusta again and to my horror the NAAFI HQ has been demolished and there appears to be new construction on the site. I am very sad having seen this as at one time in the 50s and 60s this was the home of my total family. My late father was a senior NAAFI official and served the whole of Cyprus from here, whilst I worked for NAAFI transport. There remains an adjacent building in the road set at an angle, which was my Father's office but everything else seems to have gone. Oh well, it was more than 60 years ago but to me, it seems like yesterday. Thanks for your attention to my request. Regards Eric.
Loved it George I know Lions House, we used to go to the N A F F I for our food shopping and to there to meet other army friends. What has happened to the street signs and names? Keep doing it.
In 1974 there were loads of holiday makers, mainly Swedish area and German, there were a few British holiday makers. I remember the Germans on the beach sunbathing whilst the Turkish planes were attacking. The lads had to get them off the beach to safety, they didn’t even realise what was happening even though we were evacuating the families out of the area
Hi again George. Sorry to say that you wear so near yet so far from the oldNAAFI HQ. It,s situated nearer the old harbour. As you exit the Old City via the dock gates, you approach a roundabout. You need to go straight ahead and take the old road that lead directly into Varsha. It used to be called Evagoras Avenue. The NAAFI HQ is situated in the first turning to the left. It is quite a striking building, very square, 4 storeys high and consists of 3 floors of offices, a large wharehouse and apartments on the top floor. I used to work for NAAFI and for a while lived in one of the apartments on the top of the building. There is a good view of the old docks from there. I do hope that you will be able to visit at some time, as I have very fond memories of the years that I spent in Varsha. We later moved into a lovely bungalow in Evagoras Avenue situated the other end of the town, which you almost stumbled on during your last visit. I have photographs of the Gymnasium that you visited this time but that was before the decorative gardens were built. I still retain my Cyprus ID card which was issued in 1957. Thanks once again for trying for me, I really appreciate it. Regards Eric.
Hi george love ur videos, ive been to cyprus a few times but many years ago , im staying in protaras this April, can i visit Famagusta no mans land from paralimini end where the view point is ?
Eric again George. Just to say that I visited the George Hotel when it was in its prime, also the lovely Constanta hotel that we saw in your video. In fact I had extra parts in the film Exodus, one of which took place at the Constanta hotel. Regards Eric.
Hi George, great video of Famagusta, what are the rules on taking a car into Famagusta with regards to insurance, do you have to buy it at checkpoints, coming over in two weeks on Thursday
Loving the channel , I’m desperate to visit as I’ve been wanting to but never thought we could. Where would you say would be a good base for a hotel with pool etc , I guess famagusta itself , also what’s the best airport to fly into as In closest, many thanks my friend
If you are coming east then Larnaca is best. Then you could travel through the crossing points. Or fly to Ercan via Turkey. Best to look on bookings.com for hotels.
Lovely video clip George, thank you. It is immensely interesting but rather confronting and sad. People livelihood, dreams and existence were dashed in those buildings. I hope we get to see that scene reversed in our lifetime with an element of fairness for all those affected.
When I was in Cyprus in 1994 I went on a boat trip and part of the boat trip was to see the other side near famagusta and when we were sailing near there I couldn’t believe it helicopters were telling us to get away so the boat had to turn around and go back to Ayia Napa
Yes was the same when we went in boat trip there!! The turks had boats in the water blocking it all off so sad to see!! But an amazing old ghost town gave me good memories
@@CYPRUSINSIGHT That is so sad, I was there for three years with my family, whilst I was in the RAF; our block of flats was actually ON Famagusta beach, next door to a big hotel; Famagusta, with its 7 miles of golden sands, was the most popular place .on the island for holiday makers; my late wife and I would never go back to Cyprus as it would sadden us to see Famagusta as it is now, we had 3 wonderful years, so I just think of my memories of how it was then
I don't know why anyone would want to go there now; streets and streets of derelict buildings; I was stationed at Famagusta when I was in the RAF with my family; we lived in a block of flats on John F Kennedy Avenue; they were not built near the beach or by the beach but ON the beach, the whole area was a thriving , bustling holiday resort, 7 miles of golden sands; it was the most popular resort for holidaymakers. We were there from 1968-71 and when we saw the devastation of the invasion, my late wife and decided that we would never go back to Cyprus, we had such a wonderful time there and it would break our hearts to see Famagusta as it is today, a shell and a shadow of its former self
And what? Israel is also v close. Turkey was Greece before mongolians invaded . Turkey didnt even exist. So why comment? Cypriots are cypriots nd true cypriots dont want mainland greeks or turks involved. We all mainly wanted independence
But the Turks were treated as second class citizens, they only had menial jobs, had no say in the running of the country and lived in more or less ghettos, like "Turkey Town" in Famagusta
its sad what war does... but thank you for a great journey. as allways a great vlog and have great weekend xxxxx
It is Simon😢😢
Very interesting
Thanks Anna.
Hi George and sue brilliant video very informative really enjoyed it 👏😍🙋🏼♀️
Thanks Jean, have a great weekend.

Hi mate love your videos there so useful. Im in north Cyprus now can you get a tour around ghost town or a bus if so can you recommend anything
Thanks
There is a bus/ golf cart now by the entrance.
No one should go to North Cyprus. Fuck turkey
Hello another fascinating tour round this town so many hotels that would of been full of hoilday markers such a shame .
Can you imagine what it would have been like....
@@CYPRUSINSIGHT I think it would have been a lovely place to stay the beach wit lots of bars and restaurants a very busy place.

I can only imagine, sounds amazing Eric.
A hostage for 48 years. Still recoverable. What are the chances of a ransom. Sad and fascinating. Thank you George and Su.
So sad Paul. 😞

People are not supposed to be there. The land was stolen from Cyprus.
It was stolen indeed.
Hi
How long this place been emty
Since 1974
Where do the umbrellas and sun loungers come from on Farmagusta's beach. These are surely not left behind from the seventies.
No they are rented out now.
@@CYPRUSINSIGHT so people can visit the beach and sunbathe there? I thought it was forbidden to enter.
@@emmacollett2629 parts of it have been opened up.
You can still go on the beach. Me and my wife done it 2 years ago

My late father was here in the 1950's in the army he liked it but I do not think he would like now!🇨🇾💕
Changed a lot.

I can understand that.
Cyprus is just 80 km away from turkey but 1000 km far away from greeks.
Very true Aryan.

Turkish troops out of Cyprus leave the north as is allow all residents who can come back
Hopefully it can br resolved oneday soon.
