Has changed a lot since the 70's . I remember dusty streets and now it is paved and much more lively. Would love to go back...

That is because the walled city was were the Turks lived before the invasion. They were not allowed in how the country was run, only had menial jobs and the walled city was known as Turkey town, a bit like a ghetto

@@9641roger Yes perhaps. I am just saying I really liked that old part of town with all it's history and buildings. Would love to go back...

The reason I would not want to go back is because we had a wonderful time the 3 years we lived in Famagusta when I was in the RAF; our flat was built ON the beach, the best beach on the island, so after the Turks invaded , Famagusta is a ghost town, all the hotels etc are the same as they were after the invasion, so that’s why my late wife and I said we would never go back to see Famagusta in ruins

@@9641roger Old Famagusta is pretty well what it was when I was in the Brit army there in 1971and 73 . Then the roads were not paved like they are now. Some of the new city has been closed but you can walk around it now much like when the Turks invaded. The rest of the new town is a vibrant city with lots of good cafe etc. If you went back I think you would enjoy it. I would like to go back and stay in the old city for a while then travel around Cyprus which I loved. As I tell my friends going there was great as it was not raining all the time...

You are missing the point, old Famagusta was Turkey town; but the Famagusta that we knew is now a ghost town, the block of flats where we lived on the seafront and all those along there are just as they were after the invasion, derelict. After the invasion you could still see the washing on the line. The bars and discos were we used to go are no longer there, so no, I wouldn’t want to see Turkey town, even if it is nice now, the Famagusta we knew no longer exists

Old Famugusta was first Byzantine town and than from 1192 to 1372 Knight Templars town and than from 1372 to 1489 Genoa town and than from 1489 to 1571 Venice town. All important buildings like walls, gates, keeps, bastions, castle, churches, palaces and town houses in old Famagusta were built by Byzantines, Knight Templars, Genoese and Venetians. After conquest Turkish government only repaired some of damaged buildings without major alterations and the same people (Byzantines, Knight Templars, Genoese and Venetians) continued to live, but over time majority was Islamized and Turkified, changed their religion, language and names. Very few people such as officials, priests and soldiers from Turkey settled the town. Therefore, old Famugusta is not exactly Turkey town. It is the same like Ephesus is not exactly Turkish.

Yes, of course I recommend it. It is a very nice place to get to know the culture and history of Cyprus and the Mediterranean. Especially if you come in summer, you can also benefit from the beautiful nature and beaches of Cyprus.

Thanks to the author of the channel for this fascinating video! It is interesting to see how people live in other countries! It is very important to know foreign languages on such trips. I would like to recommend to all travelers a practical guide to learning foreign languages by Yuriy Ivantsiv "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages". This book contains a lot of useful tips on how to learn a foreign language for tourists, students, entrepreneurs and anyone who needs a foreign language in life. There are a lot of good tips on how to solve problems with the language from beginner to advanced level of language learning. It turns out that the traveler only needs to know a few dialogues and you can easily travel around the world! You don't have to spend a lot of time to fully learn a foreign language, you just need to learn what you can use when you travel. I wish everyone exciting travels!
