Have a 20 year old set of the Mavic Ksyrium Elites a year now. Got them for about $160 USD. Nice and strong. Put in some new Mavic brand bearings and did the mineral oil service to silence that noisy problem that flares up. They are great for heavier riders and won’t suffer catastrophic endings like carbon wheels with carbon spokes. Guess what? Mavic even supports them today if you email a question about them. A 20 year old wheel set on my even older Trek 5200 OCLV! Bought them because of Harley’s kind recommendation here. Thank you, Harley! 🎯👏🏼🚵🏽♀️
I bought a set of Mavic KSyrium SL's in 2007 when I was 117 kg for $1550 NZD. They were light and super strong. The front one bent out of shape at 16,000 km in a crash. The back one the spoke twisted around when the shop mechanic was using the spoke key. The nipple had corroded to the rim. I replaced them with the Elites which I bought separately the front for $630 and the back later for $800. The back one I had a few issues the rear hub blew after three thousand km and I had it replaced under warranty. One spoke broke at five thousand and I had it replaced. The rim broke at ten and a half thousand km and I replaced it. The front wheel went to twenty one thousand km when it got a juddering feeling so I left it out the front lawn for anyone to pick up and some Samoan woman drives by and picks it up within a minute.
I just got a pair of Mavic Ksyrium SL Superlights for my Madone 5 Series for 50 bucks. They’re amazing! They absorb bumps so well, yet remain super stiff at the same time. And the sound they make is straight up porn.
I’ve been eyeing a set of Heliums for a while... Rode Rolf Vectors for about as long as you have been on the Ksyriums... Currently in love with the first gen Campy 3g steel spoke varietals
What a weird coincidence. I was out for a ride on my specialized allez sprint tonight with the same wheelset. They stop so good. No need for disk with this wheelset. Perfect.
I have some old school Ksyrium ES Anniversary Editions 2006 (you know the ones with the 1 red spoke and hubs). You're right, they are bullet proof except for the freewheel, race, and bearings.. it got to a point to where I could barely turn it by hand.
Damn, Harley! 51st place in 2003 Paris-Brest-Paris out of 4,000+ riders that started is stright up righteous! I had no idea you actually raced back in the day. This sheds an entirelly different light on you. Not that you weren't credible before when it came to cycling commentary, but this puts it in in a whole new pespective - especially as it concerns guys being on the "juice." You were there, in it and know what it took to compete at the highest levels. It ain't changed with today's group of riders - especially the speed records they're breaking constantly on heavier, disc brake bikes. Most people like myself have given up on the peloton ever riding clean again and enjoy racing from a purely entertainment perspective. While the purests will hem and holler to the cows come home about clean racing, but at the end of the day nothing ever really changes. The cheaters are always one or several steps ahead of the tests and biological pasport protocols, regardless the changes made to them and likely always will be. But, hey, if the majority of the top riders are on some type of "programme" then the competition is at least somewhat fair by and large and perhaps that's the best anyone can ask for. Would love to hear more race commentary from you, a la Lantrern Rouge, as you do an excellent job of breaking situations down. But I love the equipment videos as well. Keep the excellent content coming!
Morning from Devon England , advice regarding building a bike have never built a bike before , let’s start with frame , don’t have a lot of money for the build about a thousand pounds , so what frame in your opinion is best , looking for titanium really.
Great wheel set! I’ve had mine for 8+ years and they’ve done 45k+ kms - they are wonderful for descending at speed. Mavic replaced the free hub for me in 2017 under warranty and have not had an issue. On a mid 2010s carbon frame it makes the bike light af and perfect for climbing.
Thanks for droppin all this info, I sort of saw that things had been rejigged and we have more elite equipment in the used parts bin these days, but wasn't sure or had the means of evidence like you have access to, I'm going after some of these for my old Madone.....cheers buddy keep on tellin' it!...and btw you're looking ripped!
Don't mind heavy wheels sometimes, training wise I like those old "heavy" Mavic CXP 30 round things, good wheel to train on especially when paired with heavy tyre (like a Schwalbe Durano).
@@durianriders hey Durian, oh nice you had those that's cool, yeah the good ol CXP 30s, maybe the only wheel still being ridden around after they drop the bomb lol.
@@bradford_shaun_murray Exactly lol You nailed it. Thev Reynolds 525 is not a fast bicycle but a good strong commuter. All parts original even the RSX groupset.
Not surprised to see ksyriums held in such high regard. Did 36k on mine without touching them. Before that I had Mavic heliums which were the exact opposite, floppy, with frequent bearing failure and rim eyelets that went awol. To be fair the heliums were race wheel only. Keep up the honest content!
Bro Ksyrium exalith my absolute favourite rim. Sadly sold mine to my father in law. Regretted ever since. My only gripe is they're quite narrow and can be quite hard to fit some tyres. And I guess to a lesser extent the proprietary brake pads 😬. Still keep my eye out of marketplace for them tho. Love them
Call me a nervous Nellie, but after having a Mavic GEL 280 on the front explode on me when I was at 30mph, I'm very wary of rim eyelet cracks. I don't blame Mavic at all. I blame myself for not pre-flighting my bike properly. Given my spare tubs are on old Super Champion rims I bought back when they were current, you might surmise that I'm at an age where tasting the tarmac comes with a few more consequences than it did when I was in my thirties, hence my phobia about compromised rims.
I have a Vitus 979 bicycle with the original GEL 280 on them. They are super lightweight and have failed for others. I had the Specialized Hell of the North 25mm Tubulars installed. I inflate with enough air to hold form but not at max inflation to provide some cushion to preserve the wheels.
Rim with a 720mm rotor built into the rim itself for lighter weight, better brake modulation and acceleration. Oh yes and far more aero you have the disc molded into the rim hidden and with LESS spokes vs catching the wind, off balanced asymmetric wheel with ugly amount of spokes in it.
I’ve got Mavic Kysrium Elites on my 10 year old Cervélo R5. They’ve served me well so far, but I’ve been thinking of swapping them for those fabulous Winspace wheels on your recent vid. Would I notice enough difference in my average speed to justify the swap?
Such a great wheel, it almost destroyed Mavic….. the Ksyrium SSL cracked like crazy. We stopped selling them because everyone came back with cracked back wheels. Mavic stoped replacing under warranty and wanted to give Ksyrium Elite or cosmic versions to customer’s…… Buy some Dura ace 7850 wheels, those will last! ❤
Any knowledge on the mavic sys slr wheelset? They also have the rounded spokes and I read that there was failure with the spokes. Can't find any info about them online!
What brand/model would be a good alternative to this wheelset in 2023? I've always wanted a set of these wheels, but they are either really worn out or still quite expensive here in the UK (when buying second hand). I don't mind going Chinese. I just don't know what to look for.
That’s how much of a sheep you are 😂. You probably see a spider and spray it with poison because the TV said so! You don’t have the ability to use context. A crack is a crack and ‘a spider = danger to a fly so that means danger to me’ lol
Your last words: "...chuck them on the shopping bike" Bro...Harley we need more on your shopping rig. I need to buy a trailer or something and I want to take my cat with me. Can we see more on your cats and commuting rig?
