The Suicide Squad game is broken. It isn't just an embarrassing and cynical ploy to milk more of the player's own money for DC and Arkhamverse nostalgia, but it hardly functions as an entertaining and carefully thought-out piece of entertainment. In this video, we delve into the catastrophic disappointment that is Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League. As a longtime fan of the Rocksteady Arkhamverse, from the groundbreaking Batman: Arkham Asylum to the epic conclusion in Arkham Knight, I couldn't help but feel utterly betrayed by the direction taken with this latest installment. In fact, Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League is one of the worst games I've ever played.
Join me as I dissect why Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League broke my brain, why the Suicide Squad game broke me, offering little to no respect for the player's intelligence or investment in the universe they've painstakingly built. On the topic of the character assasination of the JL members, from what I can gather the writers essentially hate the JL except for Wonder Woman. While I haven't played the game (not that I ever will), watching a bunch of other youtubers cover this game I find there is a large bias on which characters the writers like and don't like.
I mean usually in mind control scenerios the ones being mind controlled either turn into emotionless obediant puppets or have their values warped to suit the one doing the mind controlling. Complete personality shifts that don't resemble the mind controller is a very odd writing choice. Brianiac from what I've seen has a cold calculating machine like personality, definitely not the type to rip a person's heart out and joke about it.
I believe that the writers are of the modern feminist type, the ones that basically just hate men. This is reflected in the way that its only WW that resists the mind control, helps the SS, isn't a boss that you fight (and kill), and has a heroic death sacrificing herself. On top of that apperently her lore/data entry is 2-3x longer than any of the JL members and is just praising her and the Amazonians as if they're the best thing since sliced bread. Contrast that to the rest of the JL members where they're (as was pointed out) complete assholes, don't resist the mind control at all (aside from the scenario with WW with her lasso), die pitiful deaths against the SS, and are humiliated after their death.
It's not that they couldn't write a story where you at least attempt to save the JL members or they have heroic/meaningful deaths, its that they DIDN'T WANT to, they WANTED to kill the male JL members, they WANTED to humiliate them. Granted writing a GOOD story in general seems to be an impossible task for the writers from what I can tell.
At least this is my speculation based on what I gatthered.
@@22Arcana kinda gotta agree on that point dude, cuz I watched the full game play through of SS and gotta say the writers basically had zero respect when it came to JL members. Hell even Batman, who you think would never say some of things he said during the game, all to just get headshot by Harley sounds so anti climatic and one dimensional.
I can only appreciate the game for it's designs, and general aesthetics, cuz I can tell people worked really hard trying to bring this game to life for years. So my heart's go out to the game devs who worked tirelessly make the game look so good. It's just the clunky gameplay with its incessant repeat of shooting, and the writing that was so lazy that makes it fall short. We should at least pay respect to the designers. But not the writers. Rocksteady really dropped the ball with this one

Imagine 9 years in the works, and this is the shit we get. Injustice did it better and I was bored with that story.
The loop is a perfect time sink. But isolated desperately wish the mission structure was better. Any and all complaints with the story are valid due to it being a live service. Everything we want may just arrive in a few months. The deaths of the league itself can or will be undone in a few months. Hell, this video may be completely pointless due to it being live service. We may not even get to see it due to just how bad the start is!
I agree. Just accept it for what it is and not what it was supposed to be. Same goes for so many other entertainment products that fail to meet expectations.

At the beginning of the game it shows that Waller recruited The Squad from Arkham. I fail to see how Arkham was reopened after Joker's massive takeover.

You actually got that Boomerang argument backwards. It fits well for this and the film’s iteration. While Boomerang in the comics, as with the rest of the rouges, they can get annoyed Flash’s personality and angry over them foiling their plans but there’s always a hint of respect between them all. They aren’t out to take over the world or anything, they’re only after cash, robbing banks. Even with the power Flash possesses he never goes overboard with them to cripple them, kill them, erase them from existence, etc. when he so easily could. And whenever one of his foes is in distress, Flash saves them without a second thought.
It’s a very ‘hate to love them’ situation. You can’t help but like the guy. There was even an instance where one criminal was going to take off Flash’s mask and kill them while they were unconscious, but Boomerang stepped in and put a stop to it, because that’s not how the rouges operate. They endanger and injure, but very rarely do they act with the intent to kill. Even when threatening to kill it’s 9/10 a complete bluff which Flash always catches onto and throws out the quips for while still taking the situation seriously.

What amazing character writting.
Don't forget that in this universe, Harley didn't do the acid thing. This is the Arkhamverse. She willingly juet let him escape in Arkham Origins. While I'm sure he did awful stuff to her, it was mostly her simping over him as he pushed her away and used her. I don't think she deserves the SS movie sympathy. They're not the same rendition, though they tried to make them the same.
Same harley who helped joker to poison a 5 year kid with titan and encourage his dad to end it all just to have an amusement park for themselves btw.

Arkham Harley also participated in the killing of Jason Todd (and was implied in a tie-in comic to have sexually assaulted him, though that might be non-canon now.) While she did sort of have the endearing dumbass angle in Arkham, she was still undeniably evil, more so than most interpretations of the character.

And the 'white' Deadshot was a far better marksman. I remember in origins he rirocheted his bullets from the guns of his men, and from the tail rotor of a helicopter. This new Deadshot literally has no special skill, telent, he is simply a sniper.

I really love the fact that you adore the concept, members of the Suicide Squad, and you talk so passionately about them. And I love the points you made. This game could have been excellent.
The onlt nitpick I have is the fact that the members of the SS ar not people who's 'moral codes are a bit diffrenet', or people who were 'labeled criminals', treated different because how they look. They are seriously fucked up evil people.
King Shark is a cannibalistic murderer. Harley Quinn is not just a victim, she did some fucked up shit. She killed children in the Arkham verse, she tortured Jason with Joker, and killed thousands. She caused a death of a little girl, and later convinced the father of said little girl to commint suicide (Arkham Knight, Batgirl DLC).
SSKTJL Deadshot, the black one, killed the original Deadshot we met in Origins and City. He mercilessly murdered him, and made an orphan in the process. Zoe Lawton is an orphan thanks to the black Deadshot who came from another universe, and killed the original/white one. (according to the game lore)
Agree on the fact that Suicide Squad is about/should be about finding redemtion. But first they have to face what they done, the writers can't just trivialize the evils these people comitted. In this game the writers were trying to depict them as these punk rebels, who are wacky, and crazy, and disrespectful, and funny. The ditchtomy comes from the fact that the writers were incompetetnt, wanted fun/carzy/rebel antiheroes, but actually managed to make them outright evil.

have it be about Wonder Woman who isn't brainwashed saving the Justice League and every time she saves them you get to play as them and they have one final cenimatic battle against Brainac and call it "Wonder Woman: Brainwashed Warrior" letterally THAT makes more since than Harley Quinn and some random ass dudes showing up with ordinary guns shooting at THE FLASH
this game feels like it should have come out in 2016 when they were trying to make Suicide Squad a thing. They are honestly a joke now.

The Suicide squad is a great concept. They just need to be given covert missions and most of them should die instead of what this game and the first movie did. James Gunn's take on them was one of the best comic book movies ever.

The fact that we got a Suicide Squad game that is NOT a rogue-like where every time you die you take control of a different character is baffling to me. The whole idea is that they’re expendable. If Fire Emblem and Digimon Survive can be games where your characters die and those deaths matter, so could have a SS game.
Arkham Batman shouldn’t have been on the justice league in this universe, it should’ve been Arkhamverse Tim Drake as Red Robin
They could’ve, would’ve, and definitely should have given each member of the Justice League their own trilogy of games set in the Arkham universe so that way their demise seems and feels better than whatever we got. And I refuse to accept that Batman here is Arkham’s version of Batman and gets treated this way, especially since this is one of Kevin Conroy’s last roles, and they treat him like absolute trash.
The Batman Arkham games are still one of my personal favorite series of video games, and I refuse to consider this “story” canon to the Arkham universe.

Exactly this should of been an end to all ends threat game. Build up the universe through other characters through other games, before killing this universe, and killed it they did.

The problem with making a suicide story is because you need weak enough villains to explain why they can’t just get the bomb out and leave but you also need a realistic way to not get utterly destroyed by the heroes
That’s why the Suicide Squad’s targets should’ve been weaker characters, something in the B-List tier.
Assault on Arkham had them going after Riddler but then getting caught up in Joker’s breakout. Deadshot had a hard-fought battle against the Joker, but the whole group got creamed by Batman.
The animated Suicide Squad had them going up against Vandal Savage, and when Zoom got involved the only reason they weren’t wiped out is because he was kind of dead and wasn’t as dangerous as normal.
But it pretty much was that once a certain tier showed up, the group was losing.

Well this version of Harley never had a fallout with the Joker, grieved him even into Arkham Knight and was entirely complicit in the stuff he did.
Even talked a man into suicide after she and Joker had the Titan formula from Asylum and City tested on his dying daughter and supplied him the Laughing Gas to do the deed.
I'd say this version of Harley is very MUCH a morally reprehensible psychopath.
It should’ve been an actual Superman game because that would’ve been fantastic and tons of fun in my opinion.
To think there’s better characters and teams they could’ve made games about. Like The Justice League (the game fans actually wanted), Teen Titans, Green Lantern, Metal Men, John Constantine, Zatanna, or even Challengers of the Unknown, hell I could’ve even settled for a Legion of Doom game. But they gave us a shallow live service pointless game. I hope Monolith doesn’t screw up the Wonder Woman game.
dude a GL corp helljumpers 2 style game against Parademons would go crazyyyy, a Dishonored style The Question vs the Religion of Crime game, Justice League Dark vs Vandal Savage's Supervillian Society, hell the Metal Men are a hidden gem in themselves
I knew this Game was gonna be Bad by just the Title, the Delays, and the Passing of Kevin Conroy with Marketing the Actor and the Arkham Fans to play the Game but I thought it was gonna be so bad is good at least however it was way worse than I expected it to be, I watch 2 Days of this Game and I felt Miserable that I described the Experience as Insulting to both DC and Arkham Lore and Fans alike, I felt Nothing for SSKTJL and it just makes me want to play MK1 More, at least it gets A lot of Things Right and has People that loves Mortal Kombat than the Little Respect Modern Rocksteady has.
Suicide Squad stories are difficult for I think.. the issue falls entirely on these known villains being forced to act in ways not entirely on key with who they are. On top of their story being orchestrated by Amanda Waller. The suicide squads that get even with Amanda, knowing she's bitten off more than she can chew is where those stories really shine. the characters being able to behave against Amanda's wishes without her knowledge is key to a good Suicide Squad story. but because they don't want Amanda to be just as much villain as the people she employs. That nuance is quickly lost.
This game failed on all fronts to achieve that. They wanted a live service game first chocked full of microtransactions to make the quickest buck. The story employed Sweet Baby Inc, who assisted in the storycrafting and characters (Which is why they made Deadshot black because why not). They hired people who don't care about the source material and the characters these protagonists are meant to be. This game is a failure which everyone saw since day one and it all shows.
I will boycott eveything Sweet Baby has it's mark on. I just have enough of shit storytelling.
I loved John Stewart green lanter growing up. I don't understand the hate and the contempt the writers handled him in this game. Since he is black I thought they at least give him some cool moments in the script. T_T

@@Pelican07.23 Gotham Knights have at least a tons of enemy variety (who have different movestes, have to use different strategies to defeat them), and mission types tho. And they handle Batman with relative respect.

The most likely reason for the bad writing is because they hired the services of a hack writing consultant company called SweetBaby. They were on a lot of games with terrible stories. They most likely encouraged good games to make bad writing decisions.

I'm still amazed that the Lego DC villains game is unironically a better take on the "villains fighting an evil Justice League" story than the "proper" big budget video game.
Funnily enough, Lego DC Villains also features every member of the Squad from this game in a major role in at least one level, and they're all much more interesting, endearing and likeable than in this game.
Maybe I'm the outlier on this, but I'm really *done* with DC's inane plan of forcing their antiheroes into the flagship character position by humiliating/killing their actual flagship characters. We're starving for an epic Superman film or game, and he's been the bad guy of these Injustice Games or made a co-lead or supporting character for long enough.
King shark should of definitely been melee. His level up system should of been like injustice 2.
even though I know I'm in the huge minority when it comes to this game but I personally enjoyed and had fun with the game but also I have no arguments with anything you said you made some damn good points about this game
Yeah, like honestly I do get it because when I first started playing it was fun! The traversal was cool, it felt like there was a lot to do...but man, that all just faded so fast and the whole thing felt so confused. The worst thing they did was make it a live service game and not actually attempt to give the characters different abilities and playstyles.

When suicide squad - featuring death stroke was featured in Arkham origins I was so stoked. Imagine a third person single player suicide squad game where the enemies aren’t all purple blobs, the combat feels innovative and new or at the very least inspired from the Arkham games, each character feels unique, it doesn’t contradict previous instalments, there’s room for a bit of blood when playing as a literal shark. It really shouldn’t be so hard to make a great suicide squad game but now I don’t think we’ll never get one

The people who created this game clearly just hated the justice league and Batman and wanted to undo everything about the Arkham Trilogy. Why? I have no idea. Maybe it’s a jealousy thing, maybe they think they’re better than what came before them. Idk, either way they failed miserably and lost the respect of literally everyone so mission accomplished I guess

They should've gone with a JL game and your main villain be Amazo who copied the powers of the heroes greatest villains. Also add Arrow, Manhunter, and Captain Marvel (S.H.A.Z.A.M)
This games story is "want to have their cake and eat it too". They want to use the justice league as villains but they wanted to use "The" justice league. Group of honest to god good people who try to make world better, saints and protectors of the world and have the end goal of the game to be killing each and every single one. These heroes are not at fault for evils they do when their brainwashed and it should feel really bad to have to kill each of them because how big of the loss it would be for the whole world.
They should have honestly madee this Justice League be an evil version, be the assholes you see them be but its not them being controlled by braniac, they chose to work with him and are done with pretending to be better then they are. These "heroes" deserve what they get.
Michael Rooker in a Targaryen wig just never looked right to me.
In my opinion what happened was the Rocksteady devs bought into their own hype, then thought they were better than their fans. That's where the idea of literally killing their old games come from. And they deluded themselves into thinking the audience will love them for it. You can draw parallels with what happened with Volition.

As for the squad members acting out of character especially towards the legal is weird to me as well but you'll have people say that these are different adaptations/portrayals of the characters or saying they're villains what do you expect. I also find it funny how the squad only respected WW when she treated them like a jerk, they didn't do this with flash pre mind controlled.
It comes a cross as hey let's take these characters and tell our version and if people don't like it it's an alt universe

The problem is this game had writers who didn't give a shit about most of these characters, and have been ruining a lot of characters in these games and movies the last 4-7 years. They care about their message and their own ideals. This should have just been a Justice League game, them just either stopping Braniac or Darkseid.

I don't feel like the writers understood these characters. The premise was cool, but...the execution was lacking, and story is the most important part in DC games.
It should've just been a Justice League game. Don't make it a FPS tho, still keep the live service aspects, the growing members to the team, god it would've been amazing.
But of course they choose to make a cynical looter-shooter Suicide Squad game because "we live in a society".
Their biggest mistake was making the combat so gun oriented. Forcing characters who barley use guns to use them, limiting the potential roster, and it feels so clunky. Should have definitely been more melee based like the Arkham games. Clearly they’re better at melee than ranged combat. Animations and graphics are nice though
Honestly the fact that Warner Brothers scrapped a Batman Beyond game for this abomination shows that they hate making money. WB's obsession with the Flop Squad is killing DC.

The fact that rocksteady’s Writers had the opportunity to write a good compelling narrative for these characters but gives everything that’s left as a joke and disliking almost everyone is just baffling. You had 9 years of development time and this is what you come up with? I get that they’ll prob fed up being forced to make a live service game but at least give fans a good reason to kill their fav characters. It’s almost as if rocksteady seem to be giving up on the Arkham verse which they put their heart and soul to making. I don’t wanna just point fingers at WB for their shitty portfolio as a publisher but damn rocksteady, you had the chance to win people over even if it’s live service that no one wants.
First of all, this game needed more playable characters. Bronze Tiger, Polka-Dot Man, Peacemaker, Katana, etc.
Second, story-wise, this game should have just been Suicide Squad vs the Justice Lords who have imprisoned the Justice League.
You could have a TF2 style mode where you play as an alternate universe version of the team where theyre good guys but its just simply a reskin.
This way they could have you kill Superman, Batman, etc without being mean spirited about it and also utilize the multiverse stuff that's all the rage right now.
It would honestly be better and show the competence of the Squad by having them SAVE the Justice League. The villains being able to SAVE the heroes.
I might get some heat for this, but Will Smiths performance as Deadshot was not good enough to warrant changing his whole design and persona around him.

I haven't played the game, but based on everything I see, I think the problem is fundamentally the fact that they kill the justice league. Yes, I get that that's the whole point, but I think it undermines the game. If you want us to like these characters, don't do it by making them kill the characters we like (even if within the context of the game it's the right thing to do). I mean, is there anyone out there who's like: "I never liked Harley Quinn until I saw here shoot Batman in the head but that made me fall in love with the character." It's not like she even does it some epic or heroic way.
It feels like they had two different ideas for a game: they wanted to make a tongue-in-cheek, satirical game making fun the DC heroes, but also a serious, sympathetic game about the Squad saving the world and those two things don't mesh.
I thought "reformed" Harley Quinn ended up an ally of Batman? That happens in certain universes and I can't actually believe that ANY Harley that has broken free from the Joker's influence doesn't at least relate to Batman. They're both victims of Joker, in the truest sense. And that's how they become allies, they actually kinda understand each other. Both having been marked for life by the real villain. Hell, Harley would have been a perfectly normal woman had she not met Joker. She still has that part of her inside her.
You see, this is why it's obvious. Super obvious. That when she talks down to Batman and shoots him, it's not Harley Quinn talking to Batman. That's the writers wanting to kill the mean billionaire guy who beat up innocent criminals. And they use Harley as a mouthpiece to say what THEY wanted to say, not what the character would say.

Nailed it, there's SOOO much wrong with this game and it's story, but my BIGGEST complaint (next to the blatant and subtle woke $hit, yes it's there, fxck you if think I'm wrong I'm REALLY getting tired of explaining it every time it's in media also not the main point of THIS comment I'm making) is how the story has not real weight or seriousness to what they're doing. Was hoping it would partly be about the Squad having to rise above their older selves and realize the responsibility they now hold that the Justice League is gone. Of being a hero. But that never really happens, it's all played for jokes and forgotten quickly every time they kill a member and they never really are redeemed in my eyes. Maybe except King Shark since he's just literal-humor comedic character, like a kid. And actually at least tries to honor flashes death. The rest are still scumbags that never grow past their hatred for a specific league member or understanding they ARE the bad guys (prior to the League being brainwashed) and deciding to change for the better. Harley is STILL a murdering psychopath by the end of the journey as my biggest example. And ANY heroism she displays comes off like she's making fun of it.
TLDR - The league never actually redeem themselves. They're still the same people they were when in Arkham and taking NOTHING serious or even what they've managed to do.

"Assault on Arkham" had never been canon anyway. It was its own thing, not connected to the DCAMU movies either.

I didn't mind the asshole characterization of the league too much, especially when I thought there was a twist coming. I was convinced that when Flash had his finger back and Supes pretty much shrugged off Kryptonite that it was the CSA dressed up as the JLA. Just a big ass brainiac psyop that had all the remaining heroes feeding themselves into the meat grinder trying to redeem them or take them in alive. But nah..
There was also a huge missed oppurtunity for a fear batman battle that incorporated platforming like the original Scarecrow battle but with fresh run and gun aspects. Nuts It's just a bullet sponge boss.
it's simple, suicide squad tends to suck because it's just the skinsuit of choice when someone wants to make something edgy but not actually edgy.
this game in particular is that skinsuit on top of a skinsuit of a game made to cover a live service looter shooter monetization project.
Not planning on playing this game for a number of reasons, primarily the gameplay loop and story, so I can't speak to the quality of the thing.
I will say, however, that at least Marvel's Avengers made you feel like the Avengers while playing it. Yeah, they tried to charge and arm and a leg for costumes, but the gameplay and character personalities were on point.
I wish it was a small scale game. Instead of saving the world from braniac it should of been a small scale stealth operations. The whole thing about the suicide squad is that they dont exist and waller keeps them a secret, i would loke to break into a facility and accidentally running into batman then having a while boss battle and barely escaping him. Whoever cant escape batman gets captured and when batman tries to get info out of them, waller blows up their head and now batman is aware that something is going on

They could’ve had the squad just bring each member back to the good side. One, it coulda made for an interesting dynamic. Two, you can still have the epic fights. Three, you could have everyone fighting together to bring back superman and then have a final fight against Brainiac. Easy plot
All they had to do was change 1 word, Save's. Suicide Squad Saves the Justice League. But that would leave hope and optimism
Short, but great point too. It get the point across of MAYBE making the Squad actually look competent even if unrealistic if written more smart to how they handle dealing with the League trying to kill them in the process.

I love games that have near siezure inducing gameplay and or visuals ultrakill,hyperdemon etc but those are all intentional artstyles they have purpose but this game, this game looks like it could actually fr give me a siezure there is so much clutter so many lights colors and effects its so… messy and thats a shame cause a game with this artstyle could really work such a shame

Although i would want this to be a complete game at launch, they did say they'd release more story after launch, so they emptiness could be on purpose. The developers could plan to start dealing with that emptiness to be their arcs

Batman assault on arkham is a pretty good suicide squad story. Its called a batman movie but it truly is just a suicide squad film.
