I've never encountered the idea of a sister stud, though I have reinforded a rotted ordamaged stud by fastening a stud to the side. The way you used it is brilliant. I'd have spent hour cutting tapered shims. Thank you!
I used GoBoard in both of my new bathrooms and I would use it again. It's worth noting that they are made of fiberglass not foam like polystyrene Kerdi Board or similar. Regardless, they perform the same function, were much easier to work with than cement board and more competitively priced than Schluter, but care should be taken when handling it and cutting it. The gray outer face isn't too bad to touch without gloves but the unsealed inner core can be irritating, literally and figuratively, when cutting it or touching the exposed edges. I've been following your bathroom renovation projects and appreciate the insights you share. I recently conducted a detailed exploration into the safety and installation practices concerning foam core backer boards, specifically focusing on the critical role of wood blocking for secure grab bar installations. Given the importance of safety and durability in renovations, I thought this information could be beneficial to your projects and audience. Incorporating wood blocking can significantly enhance the strength and safety of grab bar installations, a detail that's often overlooked. I'd be happy to share our findings and discuss further. It’s 8” with GoBoard Blue screws. 12” with their screws with the big washers. 6” if you use Hardi backer screws. For the handy men and DIYers out there drywall screws will be fine at whatever screw schedule you usually go by.
GoBoard recommends any type of screw should be approved for or wet areas! Personally I would never use drywall screws as they could rust if they did manage to get wet!
Agreed never use a drywall screw for this, even though you're putting sealant over, I still wouldn't trust that. Exterior grade screws for sure or stainless, I've also used the schluter screws and washers
My tile supply shop didn't have the GoBoard screws either but they recommended Wedi screws, which have a wide toothed-washer that spreads the fastener force across a broader swath of the board than the head of a screw would by itself. I used those and actually would prefer to use them again.
@@dmo224lowes carries go board now! it’s great. but the screws can be hard to find. i’ve seen a lot of youtubers use cement board screws, which is what i did. but i agree the schluter screws are great (but pricey). go board sealant is a must tho - to seal joints & screw heads.
This by far looks like the easiest way to waterproof a shower. But question, I've heard arguments for all but what's best? Do you install the go board to touch the shower pan? Leave a quarter inch gap? Or install on top of the lip of the shower pan? Basically does go board allow water to weep? Does concrete board weep? Thanks ahead of time for your responses!
I know it’s a year later but the go board instructions actually say to rest the board on top of the lip on a nice bed of their adhesive. The tile will overlap the lip and then caulk the bottom with silicone.
Haha this is a common question. The correct answer is: you should always try to place the board over the lip - it greatly increases the life of the shower by eliminating a common failure point. Think about exterior walls in cold climates.. expansion of wood could cause the sealant to fail. Your last resort would be the lip requiring water to move upwards - creating a physical barrier.

Love your videos thank you. I am stuck with a contractor that I think is cutting corners. He got go board but he used a silicon tube rather than the gobaord sealer. Is this an issue and should o mention to him? He also tiled the floor before installing the bathtub and when he put the tub in the studs were out of plumb and he pushed the tub in resulting in almost 3/4 inch gap between tile and bath tub- he said he would put a quart round to fill gap between tile and tub. Should I make him re time the last row?
Well that’s pretty goofy. Should never have to trim a tub on a renovation. Plus that will look awful. I’m not sure what you can do. Major argument I’m sure. As far as silicon, biggest issue there is thinset does not bond to it
Sika bond construction adhesive is a great product instead of the goboard brand. Last I checked it’s on the approved spec sheet to be used with goboard. Home Depot has it, and reasonable at $9/tube.
You did not mention about the mortar type. Is it modified or unmodified mortar? Schluter product does not like modified mortar since it does not allow evaporation for the thinset to cure. Would Go board do the same?
Recently bought go board from local tile store and they included washers much like Kerdi does. Said it was “new” recommendation from manufacturers. Thanks for posting this just about to start mine and sorta nervous I might mess it up. How do you finish edge of kerdi band on drywall by window?
Yeah, I just saw they came out with the washers. Not sure if they are requiring them yet, but probably a good idea to use. If the windows is outside of shower area, I’d say the same way. Might be best to remove trim to get under it. I did something similar on this one with Wedi. ua-cam.com/video/7DtJsYQAAH4/v-deo.html
Isn’t the lip that comes up off the pan where you’re supposed to stop the backerboard and then the gap is made up by the tile to prevent wicking? Obviously with waterproof board like this it wouldn’t be an issue but is that correct or is adding furring strips always right thing to do? Great video as always!

Is that corner bead necessary if you're coming all the way out with the tile to the corner? I usually have my tile trim come off the corner by an 1/8th, and then mud it. Merry Christmas.
Do the boards have tapered edges to form a channel to fill with sealent like drywall does? Or are you building up a 1/32 - 1/16" layer over a flat surface where they meet? Love the content btw. You out here making us money, bro. Cant thank you enough.
Go board is awesome. Only problem is the John's Manville go board sealant, which they recommend for warranty, is NEVER in stock anywhere! I usually have to order it off of Amazon well before a job.
Which way is better? Use furring strips to overcome the lip of the shower pan/bathtub or make a notch out the back of the backer board just enough to compensate for the lip? I've seen both ways done in youtube videos.
So i take it mixing and matching products is not an issue,i know you like Schluter but the tubes and Kerri and goboard are different based on their own materials?
I have 2 questions if you don't mind ,,,,,So I was gonna ask what your solution was to the offset at the back wall after furring out ,but saw at the end of video the drywall and go board were flush ,,I can only assume you furred out that whole adjacent section too? what do you suggest if its not possible to fur out the entire wall ,,do you have a solution? You also just used 1/2 inch plywood for your bench backing ,,is that thick enough to hold your bench ? Thanks
It was 3/4” plywood for bench because that wall needed 3/4” furring. If your aligning with existing drywall or can’t fur out. Set board on top of flange and fill with sealant. Similar to this tub install ua-cam.com/video/X93JNDaXR50/v-deo.html
I have to address the transition from GoBoard to Drywall exactly like you did in the video. I've never used Kerdi Band, but plan to. It was not completely clear to me how you applied it. Did you use Thin-set first, then press the band in place and then top it with drywall mud, not thin-set? Or does Thin-set go on top of Kerdi Band also?
Your video is great. But I'm confused about this: after furring the studs and adding the goboard, how can that be flushed with the purple wall? what goboard size are u using?
Can you use regular sheet rock screws to install this? I didnt see the big silver fender washers thats used on the other systems. Thanks and love the channel!
I noticed that you positioned the bottom piece of the Go Board over the flange of the pan, but in other videos you placed it right on the top. Which is correct? Thanks.
I'd love to have him weigh-in on this question, but the vibe I've gotten from his other work and things I've come across is that it kind of varies with the situation. Building out the studs to accommodate the boards going over the tile flange seems to be "best", but isn't always practical if you end up with difficulties lining the shower walls up with the neighboring drywall. I can't find it at the moment, but he has a super short video where he talks about the ways to work around the tile flange and discusses these two methods.
I see on their website that there is an option for seam fabric at all the joints. Is this fabric something you have used, would recommend or is it necessary? It sounds to me like its extra insurance but would like to know your thoughts. Thanks
Sometimes the shower pan wall edges are not straight. Mine had the back edge and one end edge were bowed. I thought my walls were a mess until I discovered that.
I like the idea of looking at the shower pan to see if it's not lining up. But never trust the pan they can be off as well. Also if someone else installs the pan i have seen them forced into place. Go board is loaded with fiberglass. Use gloves and a mask
Tub surround- used GoBoard. I have a window in the shower that I am going to put schluter seam tape all around for extra insurance and then ceramic tile over the GoBoard. Tile box says modified thinset but from what I read you want to use unmodified thinset over GoBoard so it will cure properly. I can't find a straight up answer anywhere. Which type of thinset do I use for the schluter tape and tile over GoBoard?
Yeah Schluter has created the whole controversy on that. Most thinset manufacturers will warrant they bonding of membranes. Schluter won’t warrant its stuff over go board anyways. But to answer your question, it is recommended to use unmodified thinset between two waterproof materials
You said that for the Kerdi band application thinset was used but at one point you are saying something about drywall mud. Were you trying to say that drywall mud can also be used instead of the thinset?
Have you ever used Ardex X5 to lay glass tiles around the bathtub? I am looking at some tiles 4"X10" and already bought the thinset but on the instructions doesn't mention glass tiles.
Question, do you let the board sit on the shower pan itself or on the top of the lip? I've heard different opinions and not sure how to install it properly
I was able to get some GoBoard for my project, but was not able to find any GoBoard sealant. Can I use the Prova Sealant as an alternative? Been hooked on your videos BTW since I decided to do the 3 bathrooms on my own.
The surface of those boards is a coated fiberglass. Handling it and especially cutting it, releases a lot of those fibers. You'll regret installing it without gloves. At least I did before I realized why my hands were so irritated.
Hahaha 😆 . I literally just did the same didn't realize till my hands where fucked. I was shaving it with a razor blade here and there and my hands are trashed.
Not telling anybody how to do anything, but if it were me, I would nail the top and bottom and check the middle with a straight edge and adjust and nail then.
Hey man loving your videos! Keep up the great work. This might be a stupid question but what is typically done at the ceiling corners in this situation are they taped? Or just left alone as tile will go all the way up?
I usually leave alone. Unless it’s a steam shower…I don’t see the point in sealing that area. And really waterproofing above shower head is just bonus 👍 you’ll be caulking that joint after tiling too
One of the qualities of Go Board sealant is the fact it sets quickly. That can be frustrating because if the left too long between a seam it will curdle and become a lumpy mess if you happen to go over it with more sealant. I don't know why the sealant in this video doesn't do that.
Has anyone had issues with thinset adhering to their sealant when setting tile? My tiler is saying he would rather cover the seams and screws with thinset instead of their sealant that I’ve supplied.
Thinset will stick to their sealant. I saw that brought up in the Q&A section. And thinset is not waterproof. Use the sealant! Or at least redgard equivalent. The materials are changing and some installers are hesitant to evolve.
I thought putting the backer board over the flange allows water to get wicked into the backer board. This causes mode to form. If the board is not cement board, the water also decays the board in a few years. The backer board should rest on the top of the flange. The gap, if any, should be covered with your favorite waterproof goop, mesh and tile. This is a common mistake to dip the backer board into the pan itself. The only material to touch water should be the tile and grout.

Yeah definite You probably want self taping screws to mount them though. 👍
I like the idea of looking at the shower pan to see if it's not lining up. But never trust the pan they can be off as well. Also if someone else installs the pan i have seen them forced into place. Go board is loaded with fiberglass. Use gloves and a mask
Are you using treated wood to sister and for the overlay lip?
not necessary
Modified thin set or unmodified?
What size screws are you using? They have two sizes for these boards. Thank you
1 1/4” is mostly what I use 👍
Thank you! Awesome channel. Happy New Year!
How long did you wait after sealing the Goboard seams and screws before applying the Kerdi tape/valve seal with the thinset?
About an hour and a half or so. Doesn’t take long to set up enough to thinset over 👍
@@BathroomRemodelingTeacher Thank you
Have you ever used Ardex X5 to lay glass tiles around the bathtub? I am looking at some tiles 4"X10" and already bought the thinset but on the instructions doesn't mention glass tiles.
Steve, how necessary is the valve seal? I could be wrong, but don’t think I’ve seen Winni do that?
I think valve seals are great extra insurance. Some valve trims are not that good at sealing to tile. But yeah it’s not a required item or anything 👍
Question, do you let the board sit on the shower pan itself or on the top of the lip? I've heard different opinions and not sure how to install it properly
Did you ever get an answer from someone? Was wondering the same
I always do top of lip then use kerdi band to waterproof bottom of go board to shower pan edges.
I was able to get some GoBoard for my project, but was not able to find any GoBoard sealant. Can I use the Prova Sealant as an alternative? Been hooked on your videos BTW since I decided to do the 3 bathrooms on my own.
Was going say, yeah any of the poly sealants of other systems should work (except kerdi fix). Must be a shortage?
Thanks for watching my videos 👍
@@BathroomRemodelingTeacher GoBoard has a list of approved sealants on their website. Liquid Nails FUZE-IT is on the list.
Have you ever used Goboard with a mud pan with a membrane? What membrane works best with goboard?
Yes, Schluter membrane 👍 works great 😊
hi, what thickness was that go board?
I noticed the sealant is somehow connected to the electric screwdriver. How is it connected? I've never seen it before.
why the firring strip on the wall stud?
No seam tape where the goboard meets the celing?
The surface of those boards is a coated fiberglass. Handling it and especially cutting it, releases a lot of those fibers. You'll regret installing it without gloves. At least I did before I realized why my hands were so irritated.
Hahaha 😆 . I literally just did the same didn't realize till my hands where fucked. I was shaving it with a razor blade here and there and my hands are trashed.
You'll be fine grow yourself some man skin 😂
Yuuup
Not telling anybody how to do anything, but if it were me, I would nail the top and bottom and check the middle with a straight edge and adjust and nail then.
You sound like a p#$$%. I've done this 1000 and it's not bad at all.
And really waterproofing above shower head is just bonus 👍 you’ll be caulking that joint after tiling too
I seal it.
Could you just notch the foam on the bottom to fit over the flange?
If the flange doesn’t come out too much, for sure 👍 I find this to be easier. It’s easy to snap the notch when setting the notched go board
can you tell me what seal that is?
Do you have to have the weepholes to the shower pan open?
That type of base doesnt need weep holes as the drain it attached to the base itself
So it doesn't need band on seams ???
What goes between the goboards and the ceiling?
Caulk it
They sell goboard tape and washers, but I never see anyone use them! Thoughts?
Does goboard not make a valve seal?
Why kerdi band and not the goboard brand?
Still OK to use that special green drywall board in a tub/shower area?
Nope, green board is not waterproof. Anything in a wet area should be waterproof 👍
What is your thought on the washers with this?
One of the qualities of Go Board sealant is the fact it sets quickly. That can be frustrating because if the left too long between a seam it will curdle and become a lumpy mess if you happen to go over it with more sealant. I don't know why the sealant in this video doesn't do that.
No vapor barrier over the insulated wall
Where can I buy the goboard panels?
Menards
Has anyone had issues with thinset adhering to their sealant when setting tile? My tiler is saying he would rather cover the seams and screws with thinset instead of their sealant that I’ve supplied.
Thinset will stick to their sealant. I saw that brought up in the Q&A section. And thinset is not waterproof. Use the sealant! Or at least redgard equivalent. The materials are changing and some installers are hesitant to evolve.
What kind of sealant is it?
Thanks.
Go board sealant. You definitely want to order that along with the board 👍
Are we not concerned about the black (mold) on the wood studs?
Pittsburgh coal 😆
I thought putting the backer board over the flange allows water to get wicked into the backer board. This causes mode to form. If the board is not cement board, the water also decays the board in a few years.
The backer board should rest on the top of the flange. The gap, if any, should be covered with your favorite waterproof goop, mesh and tile.
This is a common mistake to dip the backer board into the pan itself. The only material to touch water should be the tile and grout.
goboard says to have a max fastener spacing of 8"
why not also use the sealant where the goboard meets the normal dry wall?
You could do that. But I really wanted the kerdi membrane to span and go along side of shower pan 👍
I notice you did not waterproof the ceiling of the shower. Why? Would not the vapors from steam compromise the ceiling over time?
not if its primed and painted properly preferably not flat plat but satin or something with a wipeable surface
Where can I get hold of go board??👍👍
Hope there isn’t a shortage. But you can get off Amazon. amzn.to/3yWZI4S
Menards sells it in the Midwest.
