For what it's worth, I have a Beach with two seats in the back, and it's a much simpler setup. Just slide the seats forward, remove the headrests and pull a cord to flatten the seats. place the mattress on top, and your bed is ready. Love the videos, cheers!

Majority of the conversions leave the seat/bed in a fixed position at the very rear of the van. If you want the flexibility of a sliding bench the price difference is negligible, especially if bringing the base van up to the same spec as the California, e.g. DSG, same power engine, etc.

Just a question: isn't the rear bench in the open position long enough to sleep if pushed all the way to the front seats, with the front seats swiveled and used as extra base for the bed? Or better still, aren't the back rest of the front seats foldable back flat to complete the rear opened bench? It seems easy and logical to me, but I don't own a multivan to try. Thank You

Hi ! The front seats won’t fold completely flat but you could use them in a reclined position. If you fold the bench flat and want to lie flat you need to use the multiflex board as well. Thanks for watching and getting in touch!

@@CampervanJourney thank you for your answer. This seems like an inside job to stimulate the aftermarket since it would be an easy fix from VW I think. Do you think that the front seats swiveled would be enough to add the extra length needed? I'm asking cause this would allow to install a rear kitchen usable from inside the van instead of outside only. Thank you again for your answer. cheers

@@lucafak potentially, I’m not sure how comfortable they would be though 🤔

A van with a rib altair bed, where they just flip over onto the reverse ( none seat ) side of the squabs is considerably better. A lot of people go on about californias but from what I have seen they are not very good at all compared to a bespoke converted campervan and considerably more expensive for the privilege.

Agreed, there are some great conversions out there, but they cannot manage the interior trim fir and finish of a factory Cali (we owned a very good T5 Conversion before our Cali). However, in our search for our next van, maybe we will look at conversions again....Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. JT

California’s are excellent but looking at the beach looks like a nightmare getting bed ready. Cali over the beach any-day.

Thanks for watching and getting in touch. When we bought our Beach we were travelling as a family of 5, for that it is perfect. Now we are travelling as a family of four we are considering other options....cheers JT

@@deevaknight8237 I feel the awkwardness perception from this video was partly down to moving the board around given the relatively forward position of it and the seat. In reality there is very little difference between the California models (Beach, Ocean, etc.) the 2 seat bench version of the Beach uses the same seat as the Ocean. More space could easily be gained by moving the front seats to a forward position even without spinning them.

TBH in the general scheme of things and for the amount of time that this bed is going to be used on an annual basis, I don’t think it’s a big deal. And with the bed topper from VW (or anyone else) I’d imagine it’s probably worth the effort particularly if the van is used as a daily driver?
