Looks like a 4 weight yarn to me. I would use a cotton blend yarn for this project, something like Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton yarn or Caron Simply Soft acrylic yarn. Hope this helps😊
I think my yarn is not the same as yours, I did ten rows same as you before increasing. My hat looks to small not sure how many more rows to add, the pattern easy to follow but I messed up somewhere.

Yes it does! If it is too ‘ruffley’ Do DC 1 in next two stitches then an increase stitch (dc 2in same st) I hope this makes sense!
