great thoughts and I 100% agree. if 95% of the community doesn't like updates, they need to do something different with them. it is obvious at this point
I thought Season 5 was quite good, the map was good, the rocket pass was good. The actual gameplay updates amounted to pretty much nothing though. The season rewards are not bad either ( I mean the new goal explosions, not the terrible looking wheels.)
I recall Leth saying in a recent stream that if Psyonix would just tease a preview of an octane in UE5, that alone would build enough hype to almost warrant the lack of good updates. If they showed a small progress piece of what they are doing or at least said something about where they are, people would be inclined to understand more. They have a terrible PR team.
A preview of an octane in UE5? But all the new season trailers are already done in UE5 (which is why they look so amazing compared to the actual game). If you want to see a preview of an Octane in UE5, just look at any trailer released since F2P Season 1.
*WOW this video really got me thinking...* I didn't notice it at first but even playing this game ALL THE TIME, I literally just get used to all these issues... I can't imagine how a newbie would feel... *My biggest concerns...* #1 - Private tournaments with my subs//discord/students - Always black screen AT LEAST a few times #2 - New Maps - Almost always over saturated/bright UNANIMOUSLY VOTED TERRIBLE by competitive players (most of the remaining player base btw) #3 - New Cars/Items - I get it, you need money for your game Psyonix. Fine, I have to talk about my coaching to make a living too. But when Psyonix goes hyping updates ONLY to push more of their content... it's like BRUH. It would be like me making a tutorial and then NEVER actually teaching the tutorial and just plugging my shit. That's so scummy... It's like you gotta lead with SOME form value for your players. Tell us how you're improving our lives, and we will happily support your cosmetics. Only pushing cosmetics with no QOL changes is just slimy and comes off as milking your audience IMO. Most importantly (and full credit to VIRGE on this...) UPDATE YOUR TRAINING FEATURES PSYONIX Your game is MAJORITY competitive players at this point. These players (and new ones too) would all benefit from actually giving support to TOOLS that improve the "improvement process." I'm talking about the quality of life changes to TRAINING PACKS. Actually supporting WORKSHOP MAPS. Creating incentives (as Fortnite has done) for members of the COMMUNITY to do the heavy lifting for you, and just create systems so they can get their content out to players and be rewarded for it. Think about all the Lethamyrs, Gideks, Bakkes type people in this community. Literally give people like Wayton, Virge, CorruptedG, other pro coaches just an hour of your time once every Quarter of the year and so much good will come from it. Exclude me from the list even IDC just do something to mediate between your community and your devs. Those are my opinions, but as always change my mind. Much love Wayton, Luke
Noticed you didn’t mention Epic games at all in this video, they have a reputation of being a very limiting company and have psyonix by the balls with what they can and can’t do
Epic is just the funding and they can influence a decision whenever they feel like it. Psyonix has full control over the game and if they do something, all epic does is either help fund it, or try to pitch in like they did with the llamarama event.
Literally nothing has changed about the game since Epic bought them, if anything there's been more new LTM's since, oh and I guess the "Item shop" and Crates being removed, but that's not exactly a core part of the game and it was the best way to monetize the game after it going free to play which in my opinion was a needed change to keep profits.
I just want more transparency on how UE5 is coming. I don't need a release date but a monthly dev blog or something would be awesome, if they did that I wouldn't really care about of low effort the updates are in the meantime.
@Snoozzler I didn't ask for regular progress, I asked for a dev blog. If they tried something and it didn't work cool, that's fine. Plenty of other games have had dev blogs during all phases of development and sometimes the news in those blogs is about set backs. That's okay.
@Snoozzler yeah man, I'm sure those 3 paragraphs once a month really put a noticeable amount of additional stress on the dev team. You know what else isn't good for a dev team? A dwindling player base that's in part caused from a lack of transparency and communication from the people who make the game. No point in UE5 if no one is left around to play it. I'm not going to pretend a dev blog will fix all their problems but really I'm not asking much.
As a developer i agreed with the first option, because every time when you add a new feature or a new mechanic in a program it becomes exponentially harder to make everything work just fine, so if they added "New content" to the game(Using UE3 which is scripted language btw and makes everything worse) such as new gamemode or something like that this will make the port to the UE5 even more difficult, not because they are spend time creating something instead of making the port, but because new content will make everything even harder to port due to the exponential curve of new features, and make this features in UE5 will almost "erase" this problem due to the form how it works. And add new features in the UE5 is way easier due to plugins, support, features, and much more.(Sorry my bad English,
Heyy~ it's good to see someone in the comments who knows how things work and acknowledging the things the "regular people" are concerned with. How much time do you think it would take Psy to port RL to UE5? I'm actually thinking about taking a break from RL since it got stale for me... but I love RL and the premise of it.
What makes you think it's gonna be a port? I assume it's gonna be a standalone game so they make way more money on cosmetics that we have to purchase again.
Not to mention the first F2P update having a glitch where the Merc disappeared from everyone's inventory. Then this season having a glitch where if you delete a preset that has the new vehicle equipped, it might delete the car from your inventory. Pretty astonishing how they manage to mess that up
5:10 yeh I remember that one like it was yesterday. They really don't test updates before shipping them... Calling something NEW when it's literally just a filter pisses me off. It feels like sometimes they do nothing all week if not month and then get into time trouble when a new season launches.
As old as the game is, I'm surprised there aren't more bugs with these updates. Any dev knows that changes can have unexpected consequences. You may think a piece of code is unrelated to another area but could end up bugging something you weren't even working on.
Well, yes and no. If you properly abstract and modulate, we shouldn't see literally game breaking bugs when they add a couple new assets, it's just not related enough to have any amount of cross-pollination there.
@Biglyp A missing semicolon isn't going to compile in 99% of cases, but even then you'd have to fool unit tests and actual game testers and all of that would need to happen in a way that cross-pollinates through several completely unrelated parts of the code base. Besides, there isn't even a good reason to touch your code when adding assets, in the worst case you're going to add some flags and checks to a struct somewhere to make sure only legal assets are used - but we know RL doesn't even do that, because you can add and drive a hotdog.
I would rather have unreal engine 5 come out as soon as possible and i wouldn’t actually mind there not being any updates until it’s out if it means unreal engine 5 comes out quicker
@@jeffh9591 it’s epic games creation platform, they changed it to something they think is better so it’s easier to code new updates and fix bugs. Maybe search that up..
What I want from Psyonix: better catalogue for training packs. Outlined by rank, with ability to filter through creator’s packs organized how they intend. Pleeez

Coming back to this is really depressing. Here we were lead along that ue5 for rocket league was in development when in reality it was just rocket racing, just simply disappointing...
Yea.... this happens in every game, whenever apex updates the whole game in unplayable or a week, when riot releases a new character or items it always broken strong or so weak its unplayable ( similar things happen with overwatch characters), warzone has a bunch of bugs and glitches every patch. Ever game has massive problems whenever its updated, like nobody ever tested them, and even when it is tested they usually adjust it before release and then break it, or the glitch just dosent happen in playtest
I want a sooner unreal 5 release personally. Rocket league is still rocket league, regardless of the season or new items. That's not what made this game in the first place
Then play it without caring about the rocket pass and other things I understand why they doing some sh.i..t things every season because they need time to done the unreal 5
even the filter for the "new map" has been in the game for a while, if you check replays and go to special effects, there has been a comic effect there for like an eternity
Well, the problem is you all guys are literally playing only Octane, Dominus and Fennec. Some fame got Dingo but it has been forgotten. Making a 'good car' just to make you feel better while performing a.. what.. double tap.. xd? is just pretty much impossible, especially where there are just few hitboxes either way lol Tho League of Legends let the playerbase vote for champion reworks but it doesn't make sense to do that in RL.
@@botox_to_rapox while thats true, I feel like we should have SOME say in what the new rocket pass is. A new car coming out with the merc hitbox makes NO ONE happy, so maybe letting us pick between a few different more popular hitboxes would be a better option. I do agree with you though. It's very hard to please a variety of different people wanting different things
@@OnlyCHEETAHH I actually enjoy the car, it's a meme or whatever, but obviously it's just me. But still, you will let people decide and in a week the same people will be on Octanes back again.
@@OnlyCHEETAHH it would pretty much just always be the octane or sometimes dominus hit box. Also I think the nomad is unironically a great addition to the game. It’s a good alternative to the merc, and opens up a lot for designers.
The worst bug that I’ve been having since about early February is my camera with randomly twitch during games multiple times and it makes it impossible to play normally when it happens. Extremely frustrating
I think option 2 would be better because the community can be hype about current updates and still be excited for what's to come even if it takes a bit longer. I believe that it would overall build more hype around updates as well as bring a lot of players back.
For me it's the other way around, I'm not really playing Rocket League anymore, but I think the Unreal engine 5 update will bring me back at least for a while. But yeah, maybe me not playing anymore is because of the lacking updates 🤷♂.
Keep in mind that these items and stuff being added with every update will have to eventually be ported to UE5 which is probably why they aren't putting out too big of an update. With how much easier it will be for devs to put out major updates with UE5, I think they're making the right call currently. Not to mention, the community is pretty used to garbage content and while it does suck right now, I don't think Epic will let this game die that easily.
@@Jacob-cj9hm While UE3 doesn't offer as smooth of a workflow as more modern engines, it's also not bad at all and simply cannot be blamed for stuff like this.
an issue i havent seen ppl talking about is where in freeplay, when you go to queue for a match, for some reason it counts as an input in freeplay, despite being paused, so you'd jump right after youre done que-ing
I think every mp game deserves a CTE for players to try new things and give feedback on what could help a new patch before being pushed onto the regular servers. one of the best examples of a CTE done right was when battlefield 4 did it after that terrible launch and the game improved so much afterwards. However I also think more recent test environments are more of showcases for new content instead of the players having any meaningful input that the devs listen to on things like bugs.
Wayton, your videos are great and have helped me get through plat and I’m now between diamond 1 and platinum 3 so thank you for your help. I’m not a very mechanical player but I’m working on it. So I have a suggestion… you need to play some games in plat/diamond rank and see how many times you have to play a Smurf account. It’s so annoying! I win 3 games in row and then I’m in a game with someone who has a standard octane, no banner etc. they’ll get 4 goals 600-800 points and they’re partied with another guy that’s using their real account, getting 126 points in a game and “what a saving” every goal they score! This is happening so much now that I can’t be bothered to play, and tournaments are an actual joke! Anyway I’d love to see what you have to say about it and if you have the same experience as I’m having right now. Maybe it’s just a U.K. thing? IDK
I think that the path they’re taking by prioritizing UE5 is probably the better path but if you want keep the player base updates should be better. I would have liked if they kept Season 5 running a little longer in order to have more time to improve the quality of the current season.
Consider the fact that an update consists of: 1a. research into what is causing the bug. Depending on the bug this can be VERY challenging 1b. a planning phase where time and resources are allocated to the work. 2. a bugfix phase, where the actual bug is "fixed" 3. a testing phase, where the changes are tested against the unit test suite 4. a primary merging phase, where the changes are reviewed by peers. Changes here may bring you back to phase 2. 5. a secondary merging phase that brings the changes to the production branch. 6. The update is pushed to everyone. That's a lot of steps. It means that fixing a problem takes time because many (at least three) people are involved. Planning is always challenging because unforeseen delays are common. This is all a normal process that has been a part of game development, and engineering, for a long time. Depending on the bug, a two-week turnaround time is pretty fast. TL;DR fixing a bug isn't a straightforward process. There are many parties involved where each additional party adds an additional time delay. Hopefully, this gives some insight into the process. Understand that Psyonix are probably working on the problems that we, as players experience. It can't happen overnight though. They've produced a pretty solid game.
add in the training features of bakkesmod and add custom maps to console would sky rocket the community's player base and the game will produce mechanical players easy as breathing thus bringing new faces into the pro world of play
in season 5, i was in the "training lobby", y'know, the place you are in casual when every is being "searched for". i made a match while waiting, then i found people then the game started. BUT IT WAS LOOKING FOR A MATCH ON THE TOP! then i got transfer to another game, and also when you're in the area where you see the "casual competitive tournaments training extra modes custom matches" in the "training lobby" you can still drive
The "you can have this or that but not both" train of thought is not necessarily correct. The UE5 upgrade will be done by programmers. All of the new items and maps may, if they have the right tooling, be done by graphics designers without programmer input. Until the new engine is nearly finished, there won't be much work for the designers to do.
@@Giby321 err, yes it is. Not all the time, granted. It largely depends on how well developmented their toolset is and on what the changes being made are.
Nice videos keep it up, your channel is great for rocket league tips and everything since i have been watching you i have ranked up to diamond 1 i came to rocket league in free to play and i watched ur videos in 2021 and found. ton of good tips so thank you!
I think that the path that they are going down right now with lower quality and sooner UE5 is good! We want it to come out sooner, I just wish there was some form of transparency on the progress of UE5 and how they are working on it
Part of the issues with "random" bugs is likely due to tighter coupling of code during initial development. I don't think Rocket League was quite expected to be where it is today, and thus certain things, especially related to networking, may not have been written in such a way that made them easily changeable. Note also that networking is an incredibly finicky thing to begin with, the inner workings of the internet are so much deeper and more tangled than even experienced developers can understand. Also, a lot of these low effort updates likely come down to business reason and time constraints. Sure, they might be working on a port to UE5, but it's possible they hired new developers and put an entirely new team on that project. The bigger reasons come down to the fact that a major update is expected at the end of every season, with a slew of new items and a new car and a new map, maybe a new game mode, possible changes to existing features such as evening out the ranking system, fixing high priority known bugs (not all bugs are high priority), etc. Each of these things costs time, money and human resources. Deadlines can also be affected by publicity requirements (i.e. must have a map ready for advertising purposes well before the season start) among other things. And remember, Epic Games now owns Psyonix and the game is free to play. In the end, Psyonix is a business, Epic Games is a business, and Rocket League is a product they use to generate revenue. They definitely have analytics teams as well, so while the big fans of RL may say they don't like these crazy cartoon cars, the analytics may say otherwise. This update may have been explicitly to draw in the younger demographic, who enjoy wild comic themed stuff, or it could be that the true population of users are of a younger demographic. So much to consider...
I completely understand with you. It’s like let’s say everyone champ and above is the top 20% of the player base. That means below champ is 80%. If under champ people are the younger folks, who buy the pass, enjoy the silly goal explosions, then yeah, if I was head of the company I would do what the majority of my fan base liked, to them that’s a good thing. As a comp player, yeah it sucks, I do wish they would add more, but from a business standpoint I can’t see why a company like epic or psyonix would be doing something to “jeopardize” the amount of funds they get
I had a very frustrating bug today. I was playing a tournament and when i finished it, i didn‘t get anything from it. It said that i left the tournament even though i didn‘t. I pretty much wasted an hour of my lifetime on this without getting anything.
Honestly, I don’t care how good or bad the updates are as long as the gameplay stays the same. Also im really looking forward to Unreal Engine 5 release, so I would choose to prioritize that.
Honestly I feel like all high ranked players would agree with this (GC2+). We aren’t here for some crazy new game mode like when heatseeker came out. We’re here to improve and become the best we can be. Unreal engine 5 would be our best bet for getting updates allowing the game to advance training wise.
I've done work experience doing QA at a games company so here is everything you need to know. Everyone knows RL is on Unreal Engine 3 atm which means when they add anything it will break something else as it is so complex, so irrelevant features will be impacted. When a bug is discovered it is sent to people responsible for the specific issue, so art issues will go to the artists etcetera. The bugs also are harder to fix and document if they are hard to reliably produce. Bugs are also assigned priority letters dependant on how game breaking an issue is. Also as you pointed out know tones off focus is going onto UE5 which will result in a decrease in UE3 versions because code is done differently in either and they both work out the final look of the game differently. Hope this helps
They could take 2-3 weeks and work on a real update for the next season and then once it drops, leave some people to fix the bugs, but then move everyone back to working on the UE5 update. I feel like there's a leadership issue here.
Great video, and I hope Psyonix gets involved to see what the community wants. I think that the options depend on how close UE5 is. For example, if higher quality content extends the release for 2 months it depends on how long the total wait is. Is the total wait 2 months? Then that's doubled and we can probably endure shitty updates. Is the total wait 1 year or more? 2 months is nothing. However, if players have to endure shitty content for a year, that's when you're going to see a problem with the community as they leave.
Honestly if they just shared their progress on the unreal engine 5 version I wouldn't mind low effort updates. On the other hand I also feel like they really missed a chance to capitalize on all the new players after free to play. They should have pumped out updates and new stuff for at least 6 months if not a full year to capture all the new players long term.
I agree. This update was disappointing once again. The rocket pass is full of trashy items, the new map is officially worse then Aquadome ( i thought it's impossible) it actually hurts my eyes and makes me want to quit the game. And there are always these new unnecessary bugs. I got the GC title for the very first time and I'm at least not super disappointed about the rewards, but after playing this game for 6 years grinding to this rank this didn't feel good at all. i hope it's all because of the unreal engine version is gonna be super duper dope but I have my doubts. Really sad because I love this game and it's literally the ONLY game i play since 6 years!
Adding a "Creator mode" that has a endless amount of things to build maps out of would be great. I don't care what it takes to do that, but I feel everyone that's been playing for a while. Might be able to fall back in love with the game. We need something new. Car hit ball game boring sometimes. (I'm PS4 since PC broke.. I miss bakkas and work shop maps)
Literally yesterday I had the blackscreen issue 4 times in a row. I queued up for a tournament with my friend and we were sent in to the tournament match but got the black screen 4 times in a row before getting into the real lobby. It seemed like the opponent team had the same issue because they joined even later then us even though me and my friend were delayed for 5 minutes. (After each blackscreen glitch I was first send back to the main menu before joining again, and at the menu they called it error 71: something with connection went wrong or so)
One thing I will say, is that Rocket League is having a hard time on sticking with a theme for the season, most of the items in the Rocket Pass are kinda random and have nothing to do with the comic/animated theme , I was looking forward to this rocket pass for those type of themed items, but now I almost don't want to get it anymore 1:02
A huge problem in my opinion is the differences between PlayStation and Xbox and Nintendo switch the new map is way too laggy and it also doesn’t show up on menu on switch. And the thing is the switch can play smooth 60fps games when rocket league is at 30 fps.
I think they should follow what apex does, content creators and pros are allowed to test a new season early and make videos on what psyonix lets them show off during the test.
I started playing within a few hours of the update. I'm a steady gold, and I was definitely playing with high ranked diamonds at the very least. I felt so weird and waaayyyyyy out of rank.
As a professional programmer, I understand that developing a software decently takes a lot of time, and sometimes the dev team doesn't have it, because the owners are putting pressure, or they don't have enough devs to do the job. So this kind of bugs will always be present and be fixed after the release. I don't blame the team. It's very frustrating that companies only look for quick money and doesn't care about the quality unless they aren't profiting...
I personally want them to prioritize UE5 but at the same time I don't want them to release updates like this season 6 update. Honestly, this new update was just terrible. Custom maps now take centuries to load, I don't even have words for the "new" map. But Psyonix is one of the better companies out there and I believe in them. Hopefully we get something good in the upcoming updates.
At the moment console players have much less opportunities too improve their gameplay and I (console player) [I think every console player] really wants more bakkesmod features everyone can understand that we can't get the feature of have any item for free but like to make a primary black and orange secondary design even if it's only for training or garage or private matches but I think all the people who care about items and that their car looks as cool as possible. Please add new modes like heatseeker or gridrion games to the extra mode playlist. And a big issue is that all the cool new things that come to RL you have to buy a player who doesn't want to spent money on the game and plays it because it's free-to-play, but everything what's cool is impossible to get for this type of players. And all the work of all these work shop map creators like Lethamyr who has created so many of these maps an only a few ppl can play these. Thank you Wayton for this video
Honestly I wasnt disappointed. I thought the new theme was cool(not necessarily the map), and the rocket pass items aren't the worst. I feel it was a good step in the right direction
I’m happy that someone is actually pointing out the issues in the game even tho it’s one of my favorite games I have ever played and I will always play it but there is some very bad issues I’m hopping that it will get better over the next few seasons but thank you for actually using your voice for a good cause thank you and I love your work
One thing that has annoyed me for about a couple years now but I haven't been able to adress it is that on the x box, although this doesn't happen to everyone, (it happened to a few of my friends but others seem perfectly fine) when you try to go into a training pack with 6 shots or more, it won't load and will say that it failed to load the game data. Nothing has been done about it for so long. I wonder how many people have the same problem also stay safe everyone :)
The point you made at the end is something that I've had for the longest time when the rocket passes really started to go downhill in uniqueness and quality. Something else to consider that not a lot of people take into considerationg when it comes to building the game on UE5 is that they basically not only have to rebuild the game, but figure out a way to make sure everyone has all of their stuff from the current version of the game we have and that also includes building the same battle pass items, twice, the same maps they're releasing, twice, etc. So whenever I'm playing with friends and they are just complaining non-stop the entire time about how bad the rocket pass is and the servers and such, it grinds my gears because they are so focused on the current game and not the fact that Psyonix has to develop the entire game all over again since UE5 is a completely different beast that can't have the same code moved over. Psyonix has been putting in a lot of great work into the game and I'm grateful as they are moving in more of an upward trend. They're giving us as a playbase more features that we are wanting and asking for and fulfilling a lot of our biggest requests we've had for a long time. They're also understanding that we have to still have something to help maintain somewhat of a player base, so they've been amping up the RLCS and giving it a complete overhaul so that more and more of the casual audience could enjoy as well. For those that have no interest in the RLCS and just enjoy playing the game, they just have to be patient and understand that these lack luster rocket pass releases is more than likely a good sign that Psyonix is dedicating resources to releasing UE5 ASAP and that they are taking the issues we're encountering now and patching them when they release UE5. The shift in focus to trying to release RL on UE5 ASAP also explains more of the game breaking glitches and such, since UE3 was released intially back in 2006, it's old code, it's going to have a lot of issues and bugs within itself. Less resources to help fix the game breaking issues, plus older code means we're going to encounter more game breaking issues. Game breaking issues also tend to be harder to fix than the smaller glitches that they are patching and fixing. They obviously are keeping some resources to help make sure the game is still playable to a reasonable level as they want to keep the player base, but we just have to be patient as all those kinds of game breaking issues, including other issues such as the server issues, are more than likely going to be fixed to the point where we really don't have to worry about those issues at all in the release of UE5.
Cant think how many seasons I have seen the bug in the replays, where you cant interact with the menu properly. Its been there since at least the Epic take over. Its funny, they have been awful at updates for their entire life cycle but if you ever mention it on reddit, you get the drones taking the defence for them. I still remember when they broke flicks, because they thought changing the parameter of the final touch power meaning how much power was in the ball, it use to be cumulative why the hell did they think changing the physics wouldnt change the physics?
Gamedev here. I agree with a lot of stuff but just want to point out that simply testing more won’t fix upcoming bugs. The problem with online games and testing new stuff is that you can’t really test every possible scenario. Quick example, they change something with the ranks, a hand full of people tests this and it works fine. The entire community gets the new rank update and some people get the wrong rank because of this change that were made(and tested). Maybe it’s a bad example but my point is that’s it’s extremely hard to test everything in a massive online game. I do agree also that rocket has some weird bugs that does seem strange that they even happen. I do believe it has something to do with how the base of the game were made(and now they simply can’t change that). Hopefully rocket league 2 might have less of this and they learned some from their previous mistakes :)
For new maps Psyonix could definitely take a page out of Valve's book with CS:GO. People create great maps all the time, so they'll have fan-vote competitions to see whos map will be put into the game. With people like Leth and others who can create great maps, if you give them some motivation to do it, Psyonix will get plenty of great maps that they can take, do some fan voting to know what people like, and then all they have to do is polish the map (give it a professional touch) and they have a new map that most people should like with minimal work on their end. An outcome that gets the community involved and minimizes the amount of work Psyonix have to put in is a win-win for everyone.
they could do alternately like one ssn they could give a bad update but work on ue5 and other ssn give a good update and lower the work on ue5 doing this wont affect time of ue5 as much as only focusing on updates and even the comunity will be happy (after 2 ssns)
the filter on the map itself isn't the biggest problem. it's more that my brain hurts every time i see the cars and i think that i have fps drops just because of the look of it.
I’m sure you won’t see this but I wanted to say you’re one of few RL content creators I appreciate to see the takes of. Your opinions genuinely interest me outside of how they compare to mine. Love your stuff man.
My favorite bug of the day is sometimes people can get an extra teammate, making 4v3's and 3v2's. Seems like it usually happens because a person was added at kickoff and the bot wasn't removed. Only last until the first goal is scored but it's hilarious.
honestly bro im loving rocket league right now, im still improving and having fun, loving the new season. Im also a plat who plays about 3 hours a week, but I think I represent a lot of the player base. It seems like only the tryhard content creators and some pros really don't like it. (no offense to anyone) Be more like Jon Sandman
friends of mine and me call the "blackscreen bug" actually "infinity loading screen" cuz often you get to the main menu multible times, especially in tournaments
I think your idea of having a community council for updates is the answer to the UE5 vs. better updates discussion - Having a council to AT LEAST playtest future builds would help with the consistency (maybe even quality) of updates while not necessarily impacting UE5 progress
Great out of the box thinking! My issue with what they’re releasing is that it seems almost designed to make people unhappy. They had a whole season to make 1 new map…and all we get is a filter? Seems like they forgot a new season was coming the night before it was released and panicked harder than plats
One thing I did to fix the Play Again bug was not to try and cancel with triangle or Y like you do in free play or main menu, but to press the button you have assigned to Play Again again and it cancels the queue.
There was a glitch around 4 years ago where they completely broke the dribbling physics. Dribbling was so weird. Imagine if that had happened before an RLCS match or something.
as a small indie dev, I'd say the same. It is completely unreasonable for these bugs which should not occur for a COSMETIC update to affect competitive play in one of the largest games, and it always takes WEEKS to fix. The one that went unnoticed was the beta of new Season 1 when Epic bought RL, on overtimes and when first starting the match it would reset after 5 seconds of playing the kickoff. this bug PASSED THROUGH the beta into the big release. like wth are they even trying???
Well, from what I've seen with the last updates and updates in general, they most likely gonna either fail the UE5 transition due to not testing their game at all before releasing a new update, or it's gonna be an update with a TON of bugs. There is no other way. Their reputation for me gets worse with each update and people start noticing why. Unfortunately they don't know how to talk to the community, then don't know how to test the game, they spend weeks on fixing annoying bugs, because they don't care. All of that I can say with more than 10000h in this game, playing it since 2015, tried everything including content creation in the past. I supported them financially by buying DLCs on steam (even stupid ones like music or flags), but then epic games came in hot and since then started the downfall of quality...
For my Placements the day the Update came out, I was just outmatched for every game. For a lowly Plat such as myself, when you see the opponents scoring with Champ goal explosions, rocking Champ or Grand Champ Tournament winner titles, its really discouraging having to even play against that, on top of which, they decided to spam "ur bad" or "uninstall" or even the usual "ff", made me hate the game. The idea of a Community Council is something I can share some thoughts on. I still play a game called "Paladins" and they have something called "The Assembly of Champions", or "The AoC". Essentially the community can work with (for free) the company of Evil Mojo, which is under Hi-Rez Studios. Content Creators or former Pro Players can submit themselves for the spot of being part of the AoC, whether its representing a particular region (NA, EU, LatAm, etc) or a particular platform (Nintendo, PC, Xbox, Playstation). The community can then go ahead and vote for who they want to represent them with regards to region/platform. Their job from there would be staying in touch with the community, taking in feedback with regards to balance changes (its a hero shooter with tons of characters so they definitely needs to know what should be buffed, nerfed, changed, removed, etc) or the appearance or persistence of bugs or exploits, or making changes to the reporting system. In most cases, the other great benefit would be the community suggestions and that would end up in the discussions of the developers and the members of the AoC. Why not have content creators or Pros have an input? Give some feedback or suggestions? Hire Lethamyr and his maps can slowly be worked into the game? Neo Tokyo Animated is just... bright, fuzzy on lower graphical settings, uncomfortable in general. Unreal Engine 5 would be a great step forward for the future. If they could take more time into working on that, amazing all-round. Of course, the item system would be.... something. Do we get to keep our items? Do we start from scratch? Would there be different physics? Keep up the great work, Psyonix, we still have a love-hate relationship with the game.
its just a mess, epic don't care about anything other then income and profit margins, Psyonix are just struggling to have any freedom of movement within the current game, I think they should just create better updates for the current game and slow down the process of "5" because lets be honest, I cant see it being anything better then a disappointment anyhow. the games dying and its frustrating because so many people still love it!
Black Screen issue has happened to me soo many times in Season 5. Never happened before that but it happens like every other tournament at least once now
It kind of pisses me the fuck off how every comment on this video has such a good perspective and some insanely good ideas like the one saying they should tease the octane in ue5, yet epic and psonix won’t watch this video or if they do watch it they won’t take shit from the video and comments.
Working with an old framework is exponentially more difficult. It’s not that they are putting low effort, but most likely they hit the framework limits a while ago. So making a small change/addition costs 10x more each time. So you’d have to increase your dev team 10x just to keep pace with bug fixes and “same old boring” updates. It’s annoying and frustrating, but that is the nature of software in the first place.

5:10 depending on what they're actually testing, a bug can slip by. To build effective test cases is their problem it seems, cause any small company these days do some testing, so I don't think they don't do any test at all
Found a bug the other day and was able to recreate it fairly easy. If you change your preset as the game starts you get basically out into spectator mode in your own game and the game just does not start until the spectator leaves the game. You can literally just hold people there forever.
Most of these STILL happen during my experience today. Its insane to think that I don't even notice them anymore because they're so common. In fact i just got kicked off for a "duplicate login" which is why I'm on youtube rn lol
I definitely agree with all the points made in this video. As a developer, I don't understand how they release some of these updates with very repeatable bugs to core features. It's like you said do they even test their game? Normal software development practices is that after you are done developing the features for the release, that build goes to an entire team called Quality Assurance (QA). Their job is to test the builds before they release and document all the bugs with different levels of priority. Bugs that are deemed critical or high priority are bugs that impact the core features of the game (e.g. the play again button bug). These bugs normally have to get fixed before releasing that build. So that part is not really excusable for me. With that being said I think they should be focusing on UE 5 over having better updates. Personally, I would rather them not have updates at all until UE 5 is done, because we get these half baked features that no one likes anyway. Also, UE 5 is basically a complete rewrite of the game so any new features or updates they do to the current version of the game also has to be developed in UE 5. I would imagine that Psyonix just doesn't have enough employees to support a UE 5 migration and developing new features to the current version, which is why we are getting these kind of updates. So the sooner they finish the migration to UE 5 means the sooner they are freeing up all those development teams and QA teams to work on new and better updates for the game.
Another problem with this update is the custom map support. There is another bug with this update that is not letting custom maps load in, in under 30 seconds. This might not sound like a bad thing but after 30 seconds the connection to the host is lost and makes multiplayer on the maps not playable. Creators like leth and simple shark have lost playability to at least 50% of their maps because of this, causing them to stop making maps at this moment. This is a huge problem in my opinion and needs to be fixed!!
Like Rocket League I play a lot of games that has constant updates. My opinion is that: Be excited, but... but: dont expect much for new updates so you cant get dissapointed. In that way you know that if nothing good comes to the game at least you expected it, but if its an amazing update your low expectations will get a boost and your in better mood. For me and some of my friends works.
For a good while now I've wondered if there are actually very few devs dedicated to QA and communicating between them and management. Problems like the ones mentioned in this video and the length of time they take to fix them are the main reasons why.
great thoughts and I 100% agree. if 95% of the community doesn't like updates, they need to do something different with them. it is obvious at this point
wow hi HHG!! I love your videos!
I’m first :D
Hi HHG
I’m second :D
I thought Season 5 was quite good, the map was good, the rocket pass was good. The actual gameplay updates amounted to pretty much nothing though. The season rewards are not bad either ( I mean the new goal explosions, not the terrible looking wheels.)
I recall Leth saying in a recent stream that if Psyonix would just tease a preview of an octane in UE5, that alone would build enough hype to almost warrant the lack of good updates. If they showed a small progress piece of what they are doing or at least said something about where they are, people would be inclined to understand more. They have a terrible PR team.

But all the new season trailers are already done in UE5 (which is why they look so amazing compared to the actual game). If you want to see a preview of an Octane in UE5, just look at any trailer released since F2P Season 1.
*WOW this video really got me thinking...*
I didn't notice it at first but even playing this game ALL THE TIME, I literally just get used to all these issues... I can't imagine how a newbie would feel...
*My biggest concerns...*
#1 - Private tournaments with my subs//discord/students - Always black screen AT LEAST a few times
#2 - New Maps - Almost always over saturated/bright UNANIMOUSLY VOTED TERRIBLE by competitive players (most of the remaining player base btw)
#3 - New Cars/Items - I get it, you need money for your game Psyonix.
Most importantly (and full credit to VIRGE on this...)
UPDATE YOUR TRAINING FEATURES PSYONIX
Your game is MAJORITY competitive players at this point.
Much love Wayton,
Luke
yeah, i would love more training features.

Amen 🙏
Yup, I’m sick and tired of these maps that are brighter than the sun.
Yeah, have you seen Leth's recent video? They actually crippled that part of the community with the update... it's very sad, actually.
@@Torpid6441 Since Epic, the game getting worse...
No, you're wrong. It's Psyonix who is struggling with using UE3. Epic doesn't control that.
But "Epic = bad" gets the likes, even if it's simply wrong.
I just want more transparency on how UE5 is coming. I don't need a release date but a monthly dev blog or something would be awesome, if they did that I wouldn't really care about of low effort the updates are in the meantime.
100% in agreement with this suggestion.
I miss the more regular updates
Yes! I 100% agree

Pretty astonishing how they manage to mess that up
At one point here was a glitch where if you put cold sweater on it would break the textures of your car 😂

Honestly not really. To me, this video seems like petty complaining at a game which is mostly outstanding in terms of optimization.

@@botox_to_rapox while thats true, I feel like we should have SOME say in what the new rocket pass is.
@@Xyfi I agree that It could be either way this is just my personal opinion. Mabey I believe this because I am still playing the game regularly, idk.
Keep in mind that these items and stuff being added with every update will have to eventually be ported to UE5 which is probably why they aren't putting out too big of an update. With how much easier it will be for devs to put out major updates with UE5, I think they're making the right call currently. Not to mention, the community is pretty used to garbage content and while it does suck right now, I don't think Epic will let this game die that easily.

an issue i havent seen ppl talking about is where in freeplay, when you go to queue for a match, for some reason it counts as an input in freeplay, despite being paused, so you'd jump right after youre done que-ing
a "testing server or branch" for the community is actually a very good idea, for example Rust it does indeed has a testing branch for new updates
Lol it ran for months and months, the seasons are already way too long!
But then they gave us season 6
Consider the fact that an update consists of:
1a. research into what is causing the bug. Depending on the bug this can be VERY challenging
1b. a planning phase where time and resources are allocated to the work.
2. a bugfix phase, where the actual bug is "fixed"
3. a testing phase, where the changes are tested against the unit test suite
4. a primary merging phase, where the changes are reviewed by peers.

I think that the path that they are going down right now with lower quality and sooner UE5 is good! We want it to come out sooner, I just wish there was some form of transparency on the progress of UE5 and how they are working on it
Favorite bug so far is the blue team was free to move around the field before the kickoff timer was done. They got a shot off, but missed lol.
My guy just typed the terms and conditions of an app that no one reads

I feel like you have no idea how game development works
Yeah, like if someone mentions anime, the first thing comes to my mind is anime girls or japanese anime, not these shitty random things.
I blame Epic.
It totally looks like a map with a filter, so that they don't have a new map to convert in ue5. This realization is actually way more forgivable.
I’m happy that someone is actually pointing out the issues in the game even tho it’s one of my favorite games I have ever played and I will always play it but there is some very bad issues I’m hopping that it will get better over the next few seasons but thank you for actually using your voice for a good cause thank you and I love your work
Yo love from Pakistan 🇵🇰
Same :)
Mate I am also from Pakistan
Me too
I thought i was the only one watching from pakistan lol
@@rohabahmad5507 yeah lolll
One thing that has annoyed me for about a couple years now but I haven't been able to adress it is that on the x box, although this doesn't happen to everyone, (it happened to a few of my friends but others seem perfectly fine) when you try to go into a training pack with 6 shots or more, it won't load and will say that it failed to load the game data. Nothing has been done about it for so long. I wonder how many people have the same problem
also stay safe everyone :)
These recent updates really emphasise the disconnect between the devs and their community imo
The community is people who just like basic things and that's not good
The bug that makes my colors different than what I have them set as is super frustrating
“Does psyonix even test their games before updating?”
Oh boy, you haven’t seen fortnite…
Wayton's brain is bigger than Epic Games.
Last season I lost all my items so I was like what’s the point of wasting money on a game that’s broken in general
They obviously are keeping some resources to help make sure the game is still playable to a reasonable level as they want to keep the player base, but we just have to be patient as all those kinds of game breaking issues, including other issues such as the server issues, are more than likely going to be fixed to the point where we really don't have to worry about those issues at all in the release of UE5.
option 2 is the better to keep the community interested till they release the new game which is gonna make them have more
players return.
Jagged edges on decals literally kills me, I bought the whole deevo car with painted dune racer and it looks ass because of the decal bug
This man has the best opinion in Rocket League UA-cam. Great video Wayton, keep making bangers
damn, didn't expect to see my tweet in this video. you're the goat. great vid and couldn't agree more
Cant think how many seasons I have seen the bug in the replays, where you cant interact with the menu properly.
An outcome that gets the community involved and minimizes the amount of work Psyonix have to put in is a win-win for everyone.
they could do alternately
like one ssn they could give a bad update but work on ue5 and other ssn give a good update and lower the work on ue5
doing this wont affect time of ue5 as much as only focusing on updates and even the comunity will be happy (after 2 ssns)
the filter on the map itself isn't the biggest problem. it's more that my brain hurts every time i see the cars and i think that i have fps drops just because of the look of it.
I’m sure you won’t see this but I wanted to say you’re one of few RL content creators I appreciate to see the takes of. Your opinions genuinely interest me outside of how they compare to mine. Love your stuff man.
Fortnite swear they had the same problem always breaking 1 thing while fixing another and destiny 2
YES wayton, they NEED to hear this, we wont stand for this :(
There was a glitch around 4 years ago where they completely broke the dribbling physics. Dribbling was so weird. Imagine if that had happened before an RLCS match or something.
Great content as always Wayton 🤝
as a small indie dev, I'd say the same.
That black screen thing. Happens to me pretty much once every tournament I join. Most of the time it happens, it does for all 6 players.
"it is literally my job" LUL u just made my day!
“There are a lot of things Psyonix is doing right now that I actually like” *UA-cam app crashes* me: sounds about right
its just a mess, epic don't care about anything other then income and profit margins, Psyonix are just struggling to have any freedom of movement within the current game, I think they should just create better updates for the current game and slow down the process of "5" because lets be honest, I cant see it being anything better then a disappointment anyhow. the games dying and its frustrating because so many people still love it!
“I don’t know any other game developers that do this”
Activision: “hold my bugs”
Another problem with this update is the custom map support. There is another bug with this update that is not letting custom maps load in, in under 30 seconds. This might not sound like a bad thing but after 30 seconds the connection to the host is lost and makes multiplayer on the maps not playable. Creators like leth and simple shark have lost playability to at least 50% of their maps because of this, causing them to stop making maps at this moment. This is a huge problem in my opinion and needs to be fixed!!
Like Rocket League I play a lot of games that has constant updates.
My opinion is that:
Be excited, but... but: dont expect much for new updates so you cant get dissapointed.
