I've Never Seen a Slum Like This 😲 🇮🇩

- I visited a slum in Indonesia that's been completely transformed in recent years.
After a project headed by the local school principal, and some government funding, this slum earned the name "Kampung Pelangi," which means "Rainbow Village."
The name "Rainbow Village" is because the 200 - 300 homes in this village are painted with bright colours. The narrow streets are kept very clean and people plant flowers in the limited space outside their homes.
It looks beautiful from a distance and also from up close, when walking around.
That's what I did there, walk around, exploring, saying "hi" to the local people.
Everyone was super friendly, despite a foreigner walking through their gardens with a camera. Their village is firmly on the tourist map of Semarang, so they would be used to seeing people like me.
I was actually surprised that I was the only tourist there. I didn't see any others during the hour I spent exploring the village.
I expected to see many tourists there, taking Instagram shots against the many colourful murals. I also expected there would be many businesses there selling souvenirs and such like to the tourists, but I didn't come across even one such shop.
The only open business that I found was a small restaurant that served fried chicken. And I only found it because the local kids showed me where it was.
I enjoyed a delicious plate of fried chicken and fritters with the company of the local villagers and hungry street cats.
It was a very different experience than I was expecting, which tells you not to believe everything you read online in travel blogs. Reading those, I was led to believe this place was going to be swarmed with tourists, but it turned out to be a more authentic experience.

the fried chicken warung owner at 26:20 really grateful for the tips, you can hear that she said "Alhamdulillah" (all praise to Allah) sincerely
I love to see those kids just tryin to help you, not trying to get something from you, or even rob you.
We are taught in school about islam. Even if many of us are in need, Dale is clearly a guest of our country, taking advantage of a guest is shameful
Dale Phillip has the patience , confidence and kindness of any vlogger I've ever seen. This man deserves all the success in life for being so awesome! 🙏🏽
Rainbow Village is like a maze, it should be fun to walk around!
Although there are not many tourists, it is actually really beautiful there!
Maybe the locals want a peaceful life instead of living in a bustling business district!
You did a really great job again, thanks a lot for sharing! 👍🥰👏
Rainbow village in Indonedia is truly beautiful. But not in america and Europe. If you know what i mean
The delight on that lady's face when you over paid for the meal says it all, she was really happy 😊
Thumbs up for Dale being so generous and down-to-Earth 👍
He's Scottish. You don't get more down to earth than that.
@@Matt19matt19
What really?
I heard Scottish is harder than english
@@Matt19matt19 As someone who resided much of my life in Scotland, I can vouch for that!
One little boy was hungry, everyone else said no..how sad!!

love seeing foreigner come to my country and not getting hustle. the lady gave you local price and you gave him 4x the amount and look how you made "the whole family" day. love your work
how much did dale gave?
Worth it. We'd pay more for that food in the west. Plus not treated as well.
@@akif8776 like 6-7 bucks
@@akif8776 100,000 rupiah
Food's price is 25.000 rupiahs. And Dale give them 100.000 rupiahs
Dale, I think you are a foreigner who has traveled around Indonesia more than the Indonesians themselves. Respect to you! Don't forget to come to my city, Yogyakarta. In fact this beautiful city, Yogyakarta is very close to Semarang. I really hope I can welcome you or even guide you for free around the city. Of course, we will be traveling to destinations that not many tourists know about. I don't know if it's just a dream of mine or if it will come true one day. Keep it up, Dale!

When dale offered the kids hes going to buy them lunch and they didnt want it i was taken aback. Those are some good kids.
Well. Did anyone even understand 😅
@@HurricaneLaughter yeah they did. The shopkeeper asked the kids if they want anything and they said nope
@@HurricaneLaughter they did actually. But I think culturally we asked our kids not to take anything from strangers unless we're with them.
they are full, already ate at home.
No, they knew its not healthy, the oil to fry the chicken has been set there for the last 3months maybe
Helpful kids of rainbow village, cute kittens ❤
Dear Dale, the Major of Semarang City is a smart woman. This colourful kampong , I guess, is her initiative. ..by the way, if you love watching horror films, pls come to "Lawang Sewu" ex-colonial building in Simpang Lima, Semarang... Are you going to Dieng Wonosobo, Gedong Songo temple in Bandungan& a train museum in Ambarawa? Pls don't forget try "lumpia" & " wingko babat" and soto Semarang..Thanks a lot for visiting Central Java, Indonesia. Take care.

What a beautiful and colourful slum. Its also very clean and well maintained. I hope slums in many other countries around the world, would be as clean as this ine is.
Is this a slum? What's considered a slum?
@@shepta ask dale Philip that. He was the one who mentioned it as a slum.
@@KatrinaJosephread the description, it was a slum but transformed to beautiful village
Hey Dale, great video as always. Lots of kids on the video asked you “Mau ke mana?” It means “Where are you going?”
I think one thing I noticed is that when Indonesians go out of their house, they always have a destination in mind. They rarely go out just to take a walk and explore around the neighbourhood. If they want to go “jalan-jalan”, they would usually go somewhere nice like the mall, theme park, a resort, or a museum like Monas
Beautiful vlog bro. Just pure beauty.
been waiting for this upload.. completes my Sunday morning ❤
Love watching your videos on a Sunday night ❤
Perfect! Now I got something to do before F1 starts 🏎 Thanks for the upload Dale! 💪🏻😁
Wow you finally visit Semarang Dale well done! 💪💪💪
There is another kampung pelangi in malang that had so many tourist, maybe this is the one that you been looking for when googling kampung pelangi.
Bro when did you hit 2 mil??? Congrats man! I remember when you were in the low 300s lol. I guess a man with a camera, an interesting prospective and a sense of adventure is all you need!
I thought you left Indonesia after Toraja, but luckily the adventure is continued~~
I think he might as well permanently settle in Indonesia. He portrays it so well in his vlogs.
Because he knows this is where the views will be coming in from. Foreign youtubers know that Indonesia has sooooo many people in the country and like if 'bule' is doing this thing.
@@anthonymc8361 sound bitter lol
kalo elo orang indo bahasa lu melangit banget gak semua bule segenerous Dale but if you are not Indonesian, jeleously is crystal clear
@@anthonymc8361if he wants views he would just stay in india not indonesia. Lol
@@kimramadan not trying to be bitter nor pretentious, just stating what I thought to be a fact. Indonesian people, and Asians in general, like it when foreigners from the West, especially Caucasians, show interest to them, that's why videos and channels like this exist and many are doing well. By Asians I also meant Korean and Japanese. I lived in South Korea for a bit and they were just the same.
I've been waiting for a video from you, a good video mate
Love the way you travel,walk,talk......so generous. Respect
Thankyou for the captions Dale!
Favourite part of the video: Dale eating and on the background: MeEeoooW, mEOOOOOOOW 😂😂😂
The boys talked in Javanese language (not Bahasa Indonesia) and I don't understand either. I believe that they dont know what middle fingers mean. "Mau kemana" means "where are you going"? "Sendirian" or "sendiri" means "alone." Typically, they are wondering "are you alone?"
as always fun vibes. enjoy your video dale, nice! especially with the kids 🤣
Sunday complete, Dale thank u for another great video
Never thought this man would go to Semarang. My homecity 😅
20:00 suara kucing oyen nya menyayat hati minta dale kasih ayam nya😂😂😂😂

Really love your videos Dale, thank you for your generosity to the local residents! I think the kids didnt mean to be disrespectful, they were surely americanised.
I am impressed that you really have a good indonesian accent, you just need to expand your vocabs!
you're so extrovert i'm so amazed if i were you i'd be so tired of facing people or even i would run away 😭

Pelangi village as not as big as you thought Dale, you already out from pelangi at 6:50. But their village is coincided. Randusari village. The cemetery was so hugeeee, i can say maybe the biggest cemetery in Java. It's called Bergota. It's so huge so it divided by name like Bergota Krajan, Bergota Krakal, etc (my grandpa and his family buried in there, and my home was not even near, 15km from there). If u made kampung pelangi for your only destination in semarang I think its bad idea cause that's not represent of semarang much, better you go to lawang sewu, its about 1km from there and you can walk by that. Yea government write that place for tourism (kampung pleangi) but it doesn't look like it right. They just have normal live there. I hope u visiting semarang again and go to other destination!! PS : U just pass my ex's home Dale, and that's make me emotional. You are right about how crazy guys bring that bike in slippy and slide down road, yep I've ever fall from that road when I ride with my ex. It didn't end well for my bike and my legs. Again, emotional. Ah Dale.... You make me remember that bit*h again XD😅
That biatch probably living well now 😂
Great trip dale, if you still have time in Indonesia you can go to batam city (beside Singapore) you will find some good seafoods and local foods too
Go to see your video once the notification come up...have a great day exploring Indonesia Dale 🇮🇩🤗 Stay safe

Bahasa sendiri memang bagus namun bahasa inggris sangat penting, mohon. Koreksi kalo salah,,,,
