      @ Matthew Cloner
" Todays music", oh, is that what it is called now ??? Most of today's "music" is just seen as a money making machine by their managers, label etc. Years ago when music was REAL, artists had REAL talent, they spent years working their way up the ladder, even doing free gigs, more or less paying to play there at venues where playing at said venue was worth more than a few dollars, it was about music, pleasing their fans and hopefully getting noticed and making it big.
Most of today's "groups" are voted by the number of phone calls they get at the end of the show or by how they look, hence the load of spotty, prepubescent, talent-less plastic groups we have now, sold themselves for a dream full of riches, fast cars, fast girl etc.
Don't matter what it is, as soon as money becomes the main goal, everything goes down the shitter. Sad times my friend, sad times indeed...
      R.I.P Bill.

Two years before his death from heroin, I walked into my uncles room (I was ten years old at the time). He usually had his door locked but that day it was left ajar and I could hear this song pulsing from inside the bedroom. When I walked in he was lying in bed, mouth open and eyes staring at the ceiling while this song was throbbing in the background. I said hello and a few seconds later his bloodshot eyes rolled slowly over to me and he rasped out something back at me.
It scared me at the time so I ran out crying, and my dad told me my uncle was just sick that day. I saw him a few hours later, and he was back to his mellow self and apologized for scaring me. Well, sure enough, two years later he overdosed and passed away. Sometimes when I visit my grandmothers house, I sit on the couch by the stairs, and I can still hear this song growling from his now-empty room. Such a beautiful song, one of the strange but gentle gifts my uncle left me before he passed... before heroin used him up.

It has something to do with evolutionary stuff, since hearing and the sense of smell are the oldest we developed. And adding that to your story, wow, I bet you could really hear that years later. It seems like he plays the standard riff for the first chorus after Withers sings "until you use me up", then plays variations on that riff until the next verse, while the keyboardist stays more true to the riff. The interplay is awesome. Or did I get chorus and verse reversed? I'm an amateur with music theory.

    My friends
    Feel it's their appointed duty
They keep tryin' to tell me
All you want to do is use me
    Ah-huh, but my answer (Ah-huh)
Yeah to all that use me stuff
    I, I, I, I
Yes, I wanna spread the news
That if it feels this good gettin' used
Oh, you just keep on usin' me
    Until you use me up
    Until you use me up
    My big brother
Sit me right down in the room and he talked to me
    He told me
That I ought not to let you just walk on me
And I'm sure he meant well
Yeah, but when our talk was through
I, I, I said brother if you only knew
You'd wish that you were in my shoes
You just keep on usin' me
    Until you use me up
    Until you use me up
    Ah-huh, sometimes
It's true you really do abuse me
Ah, you get me among your high class friends
And then you act real rude to me
Ah-huh, but oh, baby, baby, baby, baby
When you love me I can't get enough
Ah-huh and I wanna spread the news
That it feels this good gettin' used
Oh, you just keep on usin' me
    Until you use me up
Ah, until you use me up
    Talkin' 'bout you usin' people
It all depends on what you do

That's James Gadsden - played with Charles Wright & Watts 103rd Street Band before he got with Bill Withers. Probably/likely played with a bunch of other heavy cats over the years.
