Durock Tile Membrane
Cant you just scuff it up, apply Red Guard, and set your tile to that? Also, there will most likely be V-cap to install first, which will have it's own set of instruction. It is simple to spread thinset and press tile down, but there is more info needed to do a complete countertop.
You put anything heavy on that counter and you'd be screwed! Best cove that with a hardie board or cement backing.
Will this technique also work for a shower surround do you think? The previous owners of my home decided to lay a Formica membrane on the shower walls to match the counters.... Will the integrity of the product be compromised due to it being vertical? And constantly being hit by a bunch of water?? I would really appreciate your opinion - THANKS! :)
Emerald Mendez I'm a tile installer for over 30 years. I'm sure it's not recommended by anyone. But if the laminate it stuck well you should be fine putting tile on it like he did in the video. Just make sure to sand it to get a scratch surface for the adhesive to grab good. I like to clean it with rubbing alcohol a couple of times after sanding. Then use an epoxy tile adhesive since it's a vertical wall on a less porous surface in a high moisture area. I recommend using TEC brand PowerGrout for the grout but you wouldn't have to. Hope this helps you.

So the mat underlay is unnecessary to laying tile directly onto Formica?
@@KennethMerrick723 honestly I don't know why you can't send down the countertop and put the tile directly on that.
Yeah the music needs to go or subtitles for people with little hearing... like me.

I knew people would complain about the music, I don't like it either, however, I know how to tune it out and look at the video for what it is worth. I personally would not do this technique except for house flipping in a low income demographic area.
What a waste of time, money and elbow grease. I've installed ceramic tile over formica (twice) and everyone that I know that has done this, have all been satisfied. My kitchen was done in 1986, sister's since 1992 or so, no problems.
I'm having this white tile removed TODAY! Keeping the grout clean is a nightmare!! Don't do it. Please don't do it.

Ewww, tile countertops. I recommend doing an epoxy resin or try Rustoleums Countertop Transformation.
The music was so annoying!!! Shut it off. Don't yell at the camera, we can hear you. It was exhausting to deal with your yelling and the awful loud music, even if it came from the Getty archives. The experience of watching was like being tied to a chair and being forced to listen to your brand of music as a penalty to gain the knowledge. Long list of music credits at end proves my point.
1. No listing of products used, just music credits - very unhelpful. Focus on the task, not the music.
2. Membrane was thick not thin at all. Thin, is like Schulter Kerdi membrane.
3. Why are you using a waterproof membrane when you have durable waterproof laminate underneath? Unnecessary.
4. Your center line got wiped out with the thinset. Should have marked the board underneath.
5. Where are the tile spacers? This is a big no no for a large countertop. Tiles can get unevenly spaced.
6. Adhesive, Thinset Mortar, Grout - all look the same and came from the same bucket.
Forget it. Stupid, loud music.
