I was floored by the Plantation 3 Star - I will actually sip a little bit of it neat on occasion, and it makes such a phenomenal classic or Hemingway daiquiri
I like Cruzan rum. I went to St. Croix in 2008, but for some reason didn't tour the Cruzan Distillery. I loved the island of St. Croix though. The east end is desert while the western part of the island is rainforest.
Riley is on it once again. She's a pro taster for sure! I enjoyed this one because I don't enjoy 2 of those rums at all so it was good to get two other perspective's. Nice one you's two's! Have a fab week!
An important point to note here is that you can't judge a "mixing rum" by its flavor *neat* . And, regardless of price, the Cruzan was the favorite of both tasters. I, myself, have compared all three of these rums in a couple different mixed drinks and the Cruzan wins for me, too. (This is the Cruzan Aged *Light* Rum here but the Cruzan Aged *Dark* Rum is especially a treat when mixed.)
We have always enjoyed Plantation rum, however I haven't had the 3 star so thanks for bringing that out.. crazy but i'm sure it's around here somewhere.
Great video, Carl and Riley! I just got the Plantation 3 Star and am enjoying. I agree that these are all cocktail rums, not sipping rums. BTW, I went to the Iowa Writer's Workshop a few years ago and really enjoyed some bars in Iowa City.
I have always steered people towards Cruzan over Bacardi. I think it's just a higher quality product. I really enjoy Plantation rums, but as far as this drink goes, I think a darker rum is called for. This wasn't the right drink for this Plantation. Try it again with either the Plantation 5 year or Xaymaca. In general, any type of Mai Tai built on the original recipe (like this one) should be using darker rums (and that's a whole different conversation). Nice episode.
I totally agree that a darker rum would be better. I built this cocktail around what I had available at the bar I work at. My choices were VERY limited. At work I use Bacardi. I think the 5 year would be super good in this. Thanks for the feedback!
Rhum J.M Agricole Blanc from Martinique. About $40 in the U.S Very nice. It is worth the splurge. The Real McCoy White is also really nice. Both of these can be used to sip or in mixed drinks. Okay Carl, you figure out which is which next time and Riley can make the cocktails!! 🙂
LOL from the future. As I type this, I am sipping on a small pour of Rhum J.M. Agricole Blanc as I watch this video and go through the comments. Grassy, but light on the tail with a lingering taste of sweet sugarcane. Sweet...hot...lingering sweet with an almost menthol chill on the tail. It's nice for about $40 in SE WI.
This was the perfect video! I have a bottle of 3 star that is almost gone. For mixing I thought of getting something less expensive but still available. I hate the idea of a totally neutral spirit [Bacardi] so I was considering Cruzan. I would try The Real McCoy 3 year but I cant seem to find it. Thanks to all that you do!
@@carl_busch it’s the REAL rum of Puerto Rico (Bacardi is a Cuban brand). It’s very affordable and a much cleaner rum than Bacardi. If you find it for cheap, might be worth checking it out for comparison purposes but I wouldn’t say it’s a must. Most white rums aren’t. Lol.
For everyone watching ,including the video host..its not pronounced "Cru-zahn" it is pronounced "Cru-Jan" named after the nationality of the people of Saint Croix U.S Virgin Islands👍
I'm from the Philippines. Bacardi white is just $2 less than Plantation 3 stars. Cruzan is cheaper but it is not worth buying. I would rather buy Flor de Caña 4 than buy Cruzan or Bacardi. Fdc is also cheaper here than Bacardi.
Looking forward to trying this Winter Mai Tai! Also, can confirm the handmade coasters are incredible - I use mine all the time! 🥃
Can't wait to hear what you think. C
My go-to white rum for mixing has been Flor de Cana 4 year. I will def have to check out the Plantation white rum.
We still need to check out Flor de Cana

I can't wait to visit down there. Sounds like a great time.

The only reason we taste everything neat is to help us understand and build up our palates. It really has helped both of us these past 3 years.

It's so good!

I remember them putting that on. IC does have some great bars for sure.

I will look into both of those

Real McCoy I would use if I could get often.
I’ve been trying to pick my well white rum and I’ve narrowed it down to the Bacardi owned Havana club, plantation 3 stars, and Bacardi white superior.
I would go with either Havana Club or 3 Stars. We will be doing another white rum video in the spring.
Cruzan’s off putting taste when sipped alone is what makes it interesting to use in cocktails. Can you get Don Q Cristal?
I haven't seen yet. Should I get it if I can?

nice comparisons guys. I agree Bacardi seems to have a very specific taste 😎
Thanks for watching!
I enjoy your comments. Just a friendly note that your picture looks washed out. No contrast.
100% agree. I am working on improving that.
I love how people love Puerto Rican rum, but hate to admit it.
People have a hard time with certain things 😉
Booze is cheap where you live. In Australia Those rums are around AU$40 enjoy your extremely cheap booze
We sure will :)

Bacardi Silver is shit and it stinks. Mount Gay is splendid. Cruzan which I buy for 5$ is the best for the buck.
Need to try Mount Gay again. Its been awhile.

Sounds like a no brainer
