  • PLEASE NOTE: ANTALI WAS FINE AFTER THIS SCARY/HORRIFIC EVENT
~This was horrific/extremely stressful to witness. Imagine it being ten times worse for our beloved Antali! OMGosh this was incredibly scary!
So we see here the PERFECT display of "the calm before the storm" bec it WAS so very calm. We can see it was quite dark for the time of day which was just before 4p there. I had checked weather forecast for Hellgate Canyon, Missoula, Montana and could see they were under a severe t-storm watch. We could tell something was brewing in Mother Nature...
As the video begins, we can hear Mr Vocal Antali flying on in. He vocalizes a little, bug watches, pokes around. We see some pesky wasps about. If you notice the tree below the nest on the right, we can see just a gentle breeze was happening at the time...
So he chills for a time, perched on a rail cam side - listening, looking around, intermittent bug watching. I love it when they bug watch! =D Just tickles me and they've been doing it since they were tiny.
He nods off at times... All is quiet. The calm before the storm...
As time goes by, there are even more darn wasps, not just about the nest surface but they begin to dance all around him w/some landing right on him. Their focus clearly shifted from the nest to Antali! He shakes them off as needed, keeps right on chillin'.
Then we see the wind rapidly picking up, Antali vocalizes - perhaps getting aggravated w/so many wasps plus I'm sure he would like a fishy treat! And that wind kept kicking up it's forceful heels. We can see the tree rt below has turned some of its leaves over which is an indication of pending rain.
Now we can hear that wind whipping about and everything is moving w/it, including the pole holding their nest. The wasps take their leave. At this point, watching it live, I was getting nervous. We know their winds can be brutal at times, plus we know they endured one helluva storm not too long ago. I could see Antali getting nervous as well. I kept wishing he would lay down flat as we've seen him do before, but he doesn't.
In came this lengthy gust, Antali was facing the wind, balancing himself on the nest and going down a little bit but still standing. Next there would be a little lull, a break in the wind, he seemed to relax a little. Then came another gust, more forceful than the last. That one flipped over some bedding on their nest causing some of it to fall overboard.
It was then cple mins past 4p, we could see some spitting of rain happening rt along w/yet another annoying wind blast. It kept doing that for a time - gusting, stopping, gusting, stopping until.... at about 12 mins and 30 seconds into the video - Antali vocalized his concerns about all of this...
Then BOOM! OMGosh! This HUGE and VERY strong gale slammed around and wouldn't stop. Its intensity grew, their nest pole was fiercely rocking, the sound of the wind was VERY loud and I worried the whole nest was going to flip. It did pick up nesting materials on left side and Antali was almost shoved off nest at that point. 'Still I kept wishing he would lay flat...
That blast of wind just kept on coming, harder and harder, stronger and stronger... Sticks and bedding flew off their nest, Antali held on, crouching now... and I felt petrified for him. That gust abated just a bit, Antali was holding onto a stick which had slid w/him on it to the middle of the nest. As it was a bit calmer in these moments, he stood up.
I felt a big sense of relief, most likely, right along w/Antali. Man, that was hard to watch! 'Can't imagine how it was for him. ...
But that wasn't it. It was not yet over... Another period of extended gales blew through and Antali looked nervous, but this wasn't as bad as the last big one was.
And finally, the BIG one hit and man, was that hard to see. THE strongest of all the wind blasts came crashing on in, rain was still spitting all over, and this wind gust knocked poor Antali down. He was pushed over onto his right side and was being forcefully shoved towards the perch edge of the nest and my heart just sank.
The winds forced him right off their nest towards the perch but Antali flapped those wings of his, breaking any fall or risk of slamming into their perch. It was horrific to see. But I'm incredibly grateful that he was facing backwards when shoved off nest AND that he was able to right himself, fly and do his very best to control the outcome of this momentary nightmare.
Most importantly, he returned to the nest a time later and was perfectly fine! Amen to that!!! He sure is getting some hard lessons on bird life, isn't he? He did very well indeed and this viewer could not be more grateful that our little muffin was a-okay! We love you Antali!!! Great job sweetheart!!!
    ~Thanks for watching!

Right? 'Twas a complete and total relief to see him fly back later and to then see he was absolutely fine. Thank goodness!

Glad Ant is OK - that was a nasty wind that preceeded the rain

OMGosh right? That wind was insane. I saw him almost blown off nest initially... "ran" to Twitter Hellgate Osprey, posted how he was almost blown off nest and then, boom, it actually happened and it was SO incredibly horrific to see.
~I did feel MUCH hope for him bec we could see = one, since he was facing the wind, this helped him a lot. Two, we can see he was able to flap those wings, wind pushing him backwards but he was moving those wings. So it was in those moments that I felt the odds would be good that he would be okay. 'Can't imagine how horrific it was for HIM to experience that.
~~I'm sure there was a HUGE, collective sigh of relief from ALL viewers/fans/followers when he returned to the nest and was just fine. ❤

I read this before I watched the video and almost didn't want to watch it -- I hate to see them in distress. So thankful Antali is okay.

TY for TY and YVW. I hear you loud and clear, have total respect for your decision.🥰 Over the yrs, I've made similar decisions re others' videos. We each know our hearts' limitations. It was very hard to see when it happened, as I was completely horrified. And yes indeed, it was a total relief to see him return and he was fine. Thank goodness. ❤

Yes, it WAS a complete and total relief to see him fly back to the nest later and we could see he was fine. ❤
~The nest pole has survived worse winds then what we saw here. They had that heinous storm blow through there last month w/even more dangerous winds. Osprey prefer nests out in the open for easy access - it's the bald eagles that enjoy mostly nesting in trees. Osprey most often make their nests in wide open spaces, near a water source w/lots of fish.
~~If you watched during this summer, when temps were 90-100F at times, we saw how awesome Mom Iris worked SO very hard. She would take frequent river dips, bringing her wet/cool body back to their babes to help cool them down. She would also fan them w/her massive wings as well as endlessly being their "Mombrella" - acting as a parasol to shade her offspring.
      ~~~Finally, I am not personally involved w/either The Montana Osprey Project nor The Cornell Lab Bird Cams. I am simply another fan/viewer/follower of this nest and the ever beautiful Queen Iris. 😉🥰
