- The Jazz Singer is a 1980 American musical drama film directed by Richard Fleischer and produced by Jerry Leider. The film stars Neil Diamond (in his acting debut), Laurence Olivier and Lucie Arnaz, and tells the story of a young singer who is torn between tradition and pursuing his dreams as a pop singer. Based on the 1925 play of the same name by Samson Raphaelson, this film is the fourth adaptation of the play, after the 1927 and the 1952 theatrical adaptions, and a 1959 television adaption.
Developed as a starring vehicle for Diamond, who had undergone a revival of popularity in the late 1970s, the film was initially intended to be produced by Paramount and AFD, with Sidney J. Furie directing, and Deborah Raffin acting opposite Diamond. However, production was plagued with several delays in filming, the departures of Furie and Raffin, and numerous script rewrites.
The Jazz Singer was released by AFD on December 19, 1980The soundtrack eventually reached multi-platinum status, and became Diamond's most successful album to date.

Gracias por compartirla, la vi cuando era niña, y la recordaba, nunca entendí porqué los críticos de esa época, le dieron mala calificación. Es linda película, Neil actúa muy bien su papel, el argumento es muy fuerte, seguir los sueños o las tradiciones.
Punto aparte, qué ganas de haber estado en el lugar de Lucy Arnaz, siempre he encontrado a Neil un hombre tan masculino y bello, por dentro y fuera.

I went with my mom and aunt to see Neil Diamond in concert in Pittsburgh PA. when I was a little girl. I loved it and was obsessed with this movie. Such beautiful love story ❤

One of the best movies of All-time
i always heard bad views about this movie but after finally watching it i think those people are insane..... this is one i think i need to add to my personal library because it has a deep meaning. hit all the marks for a great story. good origin, good character building, good arcs, it had its highs and lows and fantastic music. i can't think of any modern movies that come close.
sure it's dated but i think i love it all the more for that.

Ironically Neil Diamond did move from New York to LA to further his career.

So what did happen to the groove? They never resolved that storyline.
The movie was a musical. People who didn’t like it too it too serious.
Why it called the Jazz Singer?
Because its a remake of the first "talkie" the Jazz Singer (1927). It tells the same story but starring Al Jolson
