I believe this is Glen Campbell's best song,... and my favorite of all his songs. Probably in my top 5 all-time favorite songs. I loved listening to this as an 8 year-old boy, as my mom was washing dishes, or cleaning up in the kitchen. I still remember the image of that old tabletop radio sitting on the kitchen table... I was entranced by the violins in the background, as he sang. And the words "and I need you more than want you... and I want you for all time...." represent everything I always believed that love should be, between a husband and wife.
I do love this song. But i had several older cousins that served in vietnam, and Galveston always reminds me of that time. Gratefully, cousins all returned home in one piece.
I grew up wanting to be a lineman in Wichita or a Rhinestone Cowboy in San Francisco. Settled for an insurance sales man in Indianapolis. Music allows us all to dream.
Even though I’m Hispanic this song brings back memories of watching TV with my parents. No internet, no cellphone’s or PlayStation, just quality time as a family growing up in the 60’s in America 💕

That six-string bass gets such a haunting sound. For years I thought it was a guitar with fat, loose strings. What a brilliant idea to use it this way.
Glen played Bill Pitman's Danelectro Baritone guitar on the studio version for the solo. He's using a Fender Bass VI here. One of the very best guitar players from that era, and was a Wrecking Crew alumni!
Glen had the most beautiful voice. This, and By the time I get to Phoenix brings me right back to my childhood; my mom playing his album, ironing our clothes, humming with tears in her eyes from his lyrics and beautiful music. ❤️
I know there is recordings out there. I'd like to hear him singing the high parts in the Beach Boys concerts ('65) when he replaced Brian Wilson on the road for a period of six months once Brian stopped touring and concentrated fully on writing, arranging, producing. Glen had such an incredible voice with such a range. His guitar playing goes without saying. He was absolutely one of the top guitarists.
This song reminds me of the Dove soap commercial I viewed 1957. Just change the lyrics to "You can smell doves creamy fragrance - dove leaves your face, your hands, all of you soft and smooth". Here's to a clean face and hands, cheers Glenn!
