Just got back from my prerelease and got some nice pulls such as doubling season, bloodthirsty conqueror, Alesha and a borderless twinflame tyrant. had a blast with the games playing red/black with a splash of green.
I’m brand new to MTG and this set brought me and my wife into the game to play together! Shes been playing a Green White deck and I’ve been playing a Red Blue and we’ve been having a bunch of fun going back and forth and learning the rules together 🤣
Would love to see you do either a draft or sealed and just have you walk us through your process and play a few games if possible but at least watch your thought process.
Hey Professor, I went to my first Pre-release event today and won 2 games! I watched this video beforehand, and it helped me a tremendous amount. I ended up with a green/blue deck and even skipped 3 peoples turns with Timestop. Thanks for video beforehand Professor!
About Dragon Fodder that gets mentioned at 8:05 , dragon fodder is one of the many cards that is part of foundations supplemental products and is not draftable. There are actually several of these, since you seem to be using the default art, any card with its collector number under 280 is part of the draftable set that can be found in packs
I love how clear and straightforward sets are now! Joking aside, if not for your comment I'd have no idea. I've been playing on and off since Portal and have trouble parsing formats and card legality at this point. I find it amusing that even in their product intended to give a base to all - but especially newer - players to build from, we still need to clarify what cards can be played where. Great job, wotc
Did a draft at my friends place and went 3-0 running Izzet and pulled Niv-mizzet in my opening pack. Thanks for the guidance and heads up on what to look for!
Perfect timing for this video since I'm going to my first ever pre-release event after work today! Hopefully I'll be able to make the most of this advice, but I'm just stoked to be involved tbh! Much love to ya Prof! Stay awesome!
Arena player here, gonna try my hand at paper magic for the first time with pre release tonight. As a standard player, I'm loving the idea of a core foundations set - I'll be skipping out on the UB stuff but I'm excited for the months of Foundations to come.
@@BlazingSerenade I'm aware, I meant I won't be purchasing anything or playing MTG during those sets - I know my decks will suffer for it and I'll have to deal with opponents playing it when I come back for regular sets, but that's how it is.
the front of this video was all I had time to watch before my prerelease, but it really got my brain into gear and helped me have a LOT of fun! It was unfortunately only 3 rounds, but I would do crimes to get more with the Rakdos Rush deck, with a bunch of hasty goblins, 3 Burgler Rats, and 3 Tragic Banshee. The Kranko Mob Boss that I pulled for my date stamp was just some good inevitability that won me a very satisfying game. Thank you, just on an emotional level I needed that prerelease to go well and it totally did.
This set is interesting as its back to the old Coreset idea. But with a longer standard cycle and overall a ton more sets in any given year. Excited to hear if this new Foundation set will do what they are intending it to do while still keeping the standard format fresh and healthy.
I watched this and went to my pre release tonight, I built selesnya angels and I came 3rd over all!!! I even went to the high table to battle for first, came third due to game stats. I’ve only been planing since about March so it’s safe to say I’m beyond stoked. Thanks TTC and Prof!
Yesss! I love this series of videos! Incredibly helpful and insightful! Appreciate you tons Prof! Hope you're doing okay despite what's going on recently. Wish you, your family, and friends well! ❤️🤘
My pool was excellent: 2 Bloodthirsy Conquerors, a Liliana, Elenda, 8+ removal spells, Tinybones w/ two Pilfers, and a ton of little creatures to get in the way and stall (Nine Lives familiar bought a lot of time). Went 4/0, but lost singular games to Overrun, because...Overrun.
Thanks for this. I'm a returning player hitting my first lgs event today since the Odyssey block. I've never done the six pack sealed style of gameplay and I'm super excited for this type of set to come out just as I get back in
Went to my first sealed event with my friends after watching this, it was super fun and i won some packs! Black white lifegain with a blue splash is super fun :)
I think a good shoutout for limited is sire of 7 deaths, yes it's expensive, but it does allow you to use it in any deck, plus it's pretty much impossible to remove without severely hindering your opponent (let alone the 6 other keywords)
I know banding was a mechanic that is annoying, but I do wish banding or other fun aggressive keywords like enlist had representation here. But I get it :') I still gotta reread banding occasionally
Also I know it's not something that would be Uber impactful but id kill for more phantom nishoba esque stuff for selesnya. Feel like it could be fun ways to get value out of +1+1 focused shtuff
Great vid Prof! Just wanted to point out that these cards you mentioned or showed on screen are not in Play Boosters: Dragon Fodder, Crash Through, Unsummon, Obliterating Bolt, Deadly Brew, Cloudblazer, and Enigma Drake. They’re all in the Starter Collection. Confusing, I know! I thought Unsummon was in draft packs for the longest time…
I’m a lot more confident with this one compared to the last few prereleases. Everything in this set is so much more familiar, compared to all the new archetypes and mechanics in the last few sets
I can't wait to play some limited with this set, as it may best the last truly Magic the Gathering set that actually feels like Magic the Gathering for a while to come.
I want to say thank you for your videos. I played MTG as a kid 25'ish years ago with school friends and am trying to get back in. My have things have changed, but I am trying to relearn old stuff and learn the new. Thank you for your videos.👍
Quick question: I am new to magic (in the sense I have only done online MTG) and want to get physical cards to get into the game. Do you think it is wise to get a foundation beginner box, starter collection or a pre-built starter commander deck? I'm asking this as I would most likely be playing commander FFA with friends. I was thinking of getting Dragonic Destruction and then getting starter collection later on as I would want to build a dragon based deck.
You have the right idea in mind, get a commander pre con that’s appealing to you bc that lets you immediately play with friends, and then the foundations kit is good for more all around deck building, so it’ll likely come with some cards you can flex into you commander deck to make it a bit more effective, but more importantly it’ll help you start to build a nice varied collection of cards you can update future decks you buy or want to build with!
@amiracle3390 I will say I am still confused on like how much of each type of cards you'd want to have. I have seen some videos and I understand that it varies depending on the type of deck you have or play style you are doing but what's the average for lands, creatures and then spells for a commanders game? Also I saw that multiple legendaries are allowed as long as they are not of the same name but how do you then identify who is the commander out of all those legendaries?
@ when you buy a commander pre con, typically the deck will feature who the main commander is on the box in some way, and then the secondary commander option is always next to that card in the deck when you open the pack. The pre cons also come with an adequate number of lands for the deck, so you don’t have to worry about that aspect of it. Average for creatures and spells can vary a lot, but for lands it’s typically around 40 total land cards
@ of course! I just started getting into magic myself and had to have my friends walk me through these same steps so it feels good to pass the info on haha
Is It possible to be successful at prerelease without following a predetermined archetype? Asking because looking at the card pool I see lots of potential to just "be creative"
I'll be happy to draft this on arena once or twice but it's gonna be nothing compared to duskmourne. Simple design means less build around to make a sick draft deck that feels exciting to play
Since I just got into magic I might pick up a Starter collections box if there still around mid year of 2025. If not then ill just do singles, till I have all I want.
i cant reasonably buy product at my lgs when the starter kit there costs 65 euros while online i only pay 45 =( i might pick up a few single booster packs and the rest will come from games island
i don't know, 8 edition was kinda weak, even for it's time, was it not? Wedged between onslaught and mirrodin block. And it had a bunch of seriously boring vanillas.
You said there isn't fixing beyond the ten gain lands.... I thought there was also the cycle of temples in this set as well as evolving wilds and terramorphic expanse. Was I mistaken? Yeah I was. Weird.
@ are those standard legal? If so I actually think it's a good idea. Not flooding boosters with lands ppl don't want to see. I'm mixed in it though.. More fixing means more interesting drafts

Your phone is really distracting for us in the back. Please put it away.
Professor's pet... lol love the metaphor
If LRRMTG taught me anything it's pull an overrun and use it every game 😂
This is the way
That is all I learned from that stream but very useful
What's lrrmtg

Jund ‘em out. (Jund isn’t a thing? Incorrect.)
Literally just heading out the door to go to the prerelease (greetings from Romania!!)
Thanks for the guide, listening on my way to the event
Time travel!
What store you playing at ?
Got a Doubling Season 😁
My Estrid Self-Mill Planeswalker deck is going to be really happy
Just got back from my prerelease and got some nice pulls such as doubling season, bloodthirsty conqueror, Alesha and a borderless twinflame tyrant. had a blast with the games playing red/black with a splash of green.
"nice pulls" is an understatement there, congrats! Those cards are all awesome, glad you enjoyed prerelease

How’d it go?
Thanks for the heads up prof. I will definitely get into the stores to play drafts and sealed pre release products. Take my kids with me.

Great video, Prof! These may be geared towards new players, but I'm sure even veterans of the game appreciate a refresher now and then.
Thanks for making these for new players. Theyre super useful!

Just came back from prerelease, went 3-0 thanks in part to the advice in this video. Thanks prof.
Went to a Foundations draft the other day and completely whiffed it. Probably should have watched this guide in advance!
Went to my first sealed event with my friends after watching this, it was super fun and i won some packs! Black white lifegain with a blue splash is super fun :)
This video helped me go undefeated in my prerelease, thanks prof!
Thank you so much prof! Tomorrow will be my first ever MTG prerelease and I can't tell you how excited I am. This is hugely helpful.
Commenting to boost this one because you said this type of video isn't popular. (Though I think this is the simplest draft format in a long time!)
Foundations will be the first pre-release I’ve attended since War of the Spark. Can’t wait for tomorrow!
Just got my preorder entered in at gamestop! This set is getting me back Into the hobby! Professor! I'm so stoked!
This helped me get one out of three at my lgs! Thank you!
Charming prince is not in limited pool, its in the starter pack
Deadly Riposte is not part of play boosters. Nor is Obliterating Bolt or Unsummon. And others I missed. Anything above #271.
Doing my first prerelease tomorrow so this video was great
Glad this video will be valid for the rest of MtG's lifetime
Thank you so much professor, I am going to prerelease tonight Im so excited
I've been watching a lot of MTG content but barely played it so I'm particularly excited for the Foundations starter collection!
Where’s Black Lotus and the Blue Eyes White Dragon?
Amazed there was no Charizard mentioned either...
I left them at your mom's house.
This is a joke.
Neither was luffy mentioned I was looking forward to him

Love it, Prof!
Watching the video tells me I just had a horrible prerelease draft yesterday.
Nice video again prof !
Its looking like itll live up to its name. Itll be a basic foundation on which to add premier sets. Is Magic back on the right track?
Can we bring back banding? That's a mechanic I miss for white decks.
10:50 with how good green looks, i don't think it'll be possible to miss the forest

Spells! Izzet it? It is!

Well, my draft was plain terrible. I got some good cards, but not enough of any color to make a bi-color deck and I just didn't have strong common and uncommons to make my rares actually function. I just ended up out-ramped and out valued.
on my way to the LGS now for pre-release, wish me luck
