Just a quick comparison of 1963 and this watch. A lot of the 1963s online are NOT assembled by Tianjin watch factory themselves, they only ever produced 1 limited run of the 1963, which is called Sea gull FKJB 1963, there is also another watch they made as an official limited run reissue of the chinese air force watch, the D304, which looks different to 1963. Both of these watches are out of production and cost around $700 USD. However, they have passed proper Tianjin factory quality and work beautifully. The other 1963 watches that can be bought for less online uses the same movement, but are assembled by other manufacturers, therefore quality is up to each individual manufacturer. Now Baltic uses the same ST1901 movement, but if it has gone through thorough check and adjustment as Baltic said and as W&W has verified, then it is definitely worth the money it is asking for. Especially if the pushers and case has been engineered for it. The ST1901 movement is a reliable workhorse, it's just that not all manufacturers who uses it does proper adjustments and checks before they let the watch out of their door.
Didn't see this coming! My colleague is a friend of one of the founders and she told me last year that I should check them out when she found out I'm a watch guy. Look at them now! Definitely considering one now :) Bravo!!!
The main reason I guess is simply because it is assembled in France, in the city of Besançon, rather than in China. It makes a big difference in terms of labour cost and quality control as well.
Nice watches and great concept. Just one question which hasn't been answered from baltic (not even on the kick starter) is the watch water-resistant, if so. Till which depth?
Absolutely gorgeous! I still think at that price point they could have used a sapphire crystal. And their argument for the use of an acrylic one did not convince me as it's not a re crafted watch like the 1963... Anyway i still plan to buy one but will wait 2018 I think. great review.
One of the most beautiful vintage designs I've seen but for the price I'd expect a sapphire glass. I have a $160 Alpha with the same movement. The price of this watch should have been around $350-$400 range.
Our watches are assembled in France, and if you compare to Seagull 1963 we don't do the same strategy : They sell their chronograph in retail shop for 850€ and 300€ only on the internet. We can't do like them and play on both strategy. Moreover, its their own movement which mean they pay it ... much less than us. Also, we do have to pay our labor cost, taxes, development cost, assembling cost in France, etc.. When we think about prices, we must consider the thing wider than what we see on an internet price tag. Thanks for your hint ! Etienne, founder of Baltic watches.
I'm very interested in this as I have the Alpha Daytona Paul Newman which runs off the same Seagull Movement. I feel I may end up picking up one of these!
I like the design which looks very good for a 38 mm watch using design principle of the 40's for of a 35mm watch. Just placed an order for fun. Switzerland assembly seem to be too expensive these days therefore they might have chosen France. Should be all right.
On Kickstarter: www.kickstarter.com/projects/433151279/baltic-watches-neo-vintage-watches-assembled-in-fr?ref=nav_search Delivery should be in November 2017 but I think it is worth the wait. I already have ordered a Bicompax myself :-)
1. US$600 for a China mechanical chrono is hardly a "fair price" even though it is a Seagull. 2. What's the accuracy? How many seconds variation per day? 3. What's the weight of the product? 4. At about 5.10, you said something about finding a similar quality for several thousand dollars. Are you serious? You know you can get Breitling automatics for that price don't you? 5. What material is the dial made of? 6. US$400 for a Miyota 8 series movement is also expensive. Having said that, it is a great movement - Miyota is a Citizen company and makes quality through and through at very good prices. 7. I must be missing something because they had a great KS campaign - Kudos to them. Well done.
Typical tasteless Deepak. You will make a fool of yourself if you still underestimate Chinese movements. You had no idea. Better do your own research about this Seagull ST1901 before you actually comment. 1) some China mechanical chrono can easily go up to thousands of USD. 2) some accuracy can be on par with ETA or even better. 3) Did you even realise what you are asking? weight about a chrono? dude? Seriously? 4) Breitling only has a few decent models. The rest either boring or plain overpriced. 5) This question is funny, but you can ask the founder on the instagram. But it is of high quality for sure. 6) That miyota is by Citizen. Sure it is basic, but it is a reliable durable workhorse, no need to baby sit like ETA 2824. You say cheap, but this 8215 can last for years without servicing while you pay hundreds of USD to service your pathetic ETA. You would not even understand, A regulated quality mvmt is always better, regardless of their heritage. 7) You are really totally missing everything. You just look down on Asian made movements. You hold ETA like holy grail, when they are clearly not and got issues same as others. Wake up. Learn more, experience more.
357M view how is this possibly better than “all modern Rolex and Omega” Lol they are nice watches and decent value for the money ... but in no way is it better than “all modern Rolex and Omega”. Movements and fit/finish will be better on even an entry level Rolex or Omega.
This is the kind of watch that large Swiss companies should be making but are not. No date, thanks, 38mm, perfect, no vintage lume, OK so the movement is not the best but I've not seen a vintage chrono done this well for ages
Hey Taylor ! Thanks for your hint. We did not put sapphire crystal because it would in opposition to the vintage feeling we want to give with our watches. Also, it would make the case much more ticker. Which would disturb the proportion of the watch. ;)
I feel like the Seagull 1963 has a more legitimate heritage. I feel like any warrantee and parts issues would be easier though this company. but also these watches are almost double the cost of the seagull 1963
They would also have a better quality control because their watches are assembled in France. Which prevents customers from receiving lemons. From countless forums I've read, you can either get a Chinese chrono with the ST1901 that lasts forever or you get one that's DOA. It's obvious that the Chinese are capable of producing some workhorse movements but are incapable of regulating their quality. I hope the French could help with this aspect. Plus I'm a little bias because I absolutely adore Baltic. Kind of love at first sight to be honest.
Hey Matt. I just copy/paste my answer that i've just written above : Our watches are assembled in France, and if you compare to Seagull 1963 we don't do the same strategy : They sell their chronograph in retail shop for 850€ and 300€ only on the internet. Zheng Wang Great info, thank you for posting that!
This thing is gorgeous!!!! They hit a homerun with all their releases. Bravo on the review. Excellent commentary.
I would have liked a few polished surfaces on the case
I pledged for both and can't wait!
Didn't see this coming! My colleague is a friend of one of the founders and she told me last year that I should check them out when she found out I'm a watch guy. Look at them now! Definitely considering one now :) Bravo!!!
Hey ! Which founder do you know ? :)
Etienne Malec Salut Etienne! Jeanne says hi ;)
Nice looking vintage inspired chronograph but I can't help but think the price is a bit high for a Chinese movement and an acrylic crystal.
The main reason I guess is simply because it is assembled in France, in the city of Besançon, rather than in China. It makes a big difference in terms of labour cost and quality control as well.
Nice
Milford Cubicle Rebadged Sea-Gulls... Just buy the Sea-Gull...
Yeah, I'd rather just have a Chinese watch, instead of a Chinese watch, pretending to be a French watch.
The Seagull 1963 looks really good anyway.
There is much more than the movement the accounts for the cost of a watch.
Nice watches and great concept. Just one question which hasn't been answered from baltic (not even on the kick starter) is the watch water-resistant, if so. Till which depth?

great review.
I like the classic design, but I wish they went with a Miyota 90S5 in the HMS001.
What does it want to show on the back? Hand finish of the movement? Interesting
One of the most beautiful vintage designs I've seen but for the price I'd expect a sapphire glass. I have a $160 Alpha with the same movement. The price of this watch should have been around $350-$400 range.
way too expensive for the movements.. but i really like the designs

Etienne Malec what’s the thickness of the case? Put that information on your website.
@@toomi89 It's mentioned in the video that it's 12mm
Any idea how to find one for sale 6 years later?
I really like the chrono model I know some say just get a Seagull 1963 but the dial and hand look so much better on the Baltic plus you get 50m WR
I'm very interested in this as I have the Alpha Daytona Paul Newman which runs off the same Seagull Movement. I feel I may end up picking up one of these!
Nice vid. An overview of the whole range would have been helpful. Was that a bronze I saw?
Does anyone know the lug width?
20mm according to the kickstarter page.

Great video. Cant wait for my watch to come in November.
Similar approach to Shinola, "assembled in France" but at the proper price point. Great looking watch.
Adam Meloche shinola is so over priced........dont know what your talking about.............
Wonderful piece
Where can i buy this??? I am from zurich.

I dont really know much but I am sure the seagull movements accuracy is like +8/-2 seconds per day
Typical tasteless Deepak. You will make a fool of yourself if you still underestimate Chinese movements. You had no idea. Better do your own research about this Seagull ST1901 before you actually comment.

Great video! These chronographs very compelling at that price point
700 USD for a new microbrand, Chinese movement and acrylic crystal is attractive?
Its less than 500USD on Kickstarter, 700USD will be the final retail price. Founder
Better than all modern Rolex and omega, the people behind this company “thank you so much” i love this collection.
357M view how is this possibly better than “all modern Rolex and Omega” Lol they are nice watches and decent value for the money ... but in no way is it better than “all modern Rolex and Omega”. Movements and fit/finish will be better on even an entry level Rolex or Omega.
how to purchase this watch on kickstarter?

Nice design!
Excellent review; I agree with your take on the aesthetics. Stunning chronographs.
Stunning

I though they were going to be $350-$450 US. No thanks for that price
efedude77 especially without sapphire crystal. I'm still considering it, though. They just look too good!
Hey Taylor ! Thanks for your hint. We did not put sapphire crystal because it would in opposition to the vintage feeling we want to give with our watches. Also, it would make the case much more ticker. Which would disturb the proportion of the watch. ;)
efedude77 It's okay, I still plan to get one!!
where to buy it
It's a steal at that price.
nice watch !
lovely video
just bought a seagull 1963..... i don't know how to feel.
I feel like the Seagull 1963 has a more legitimate heritage. I feel like any warrantee and parts issues would be easier though this company. but also these watches are almost double the cost of the seagull 1963

Not at all, sorry. The Seagull 1963 look too much Chinese to me.

I am absolutely inlove!
Beautiful watch. Price is a bit of a let down though.
How can the campaign be considered "incredibly successful" if it was only launched a day before your written intro?
Keith Hodgson pre orders maybe?
nice design, china movement...
how many vph? 21600?
It is 21600 vph.
Nice pic! I like that white one!
Seriously, the worst part about the bicompax is choosing a color scheme. Damn!
Beautiful watch face and the quality seems like it juuuuussssst might be high enough to justify a 600 dollar ST19. Not sure though.
I would rather prefer a Swiss/ Japanese quartz movement in a lower price
Ryan Li it’s basically a Venus 175
I want one mommy!
make a 36mm and ill buy
kinda limited by the ST1901 movement on that aspect
id pay $200 at most for this , rather get a watch from a real swiss brand for that price lol
So expensive for a pure copy of a chinese watch (seagull 1963). You've got 3 of the original for this absolute incredible price😲
lol get a seagull witht the exact movt for 250 son
Oof, $600 for a Chinese movement...
It's so sad that it has mechanical movement... I would've bought one if it doesn't...
A nice looking watch with Chinese movement and cheap material assembled in France with no history. No thanks
Way to expensive for what it is
Too much $$ for a shitty watch.
$900 Canadian for this crap?!!! Looks good but so do lots of $200 Amazon crap.
Will it last a lifetime?
When i heard made in china. I lost all interest.
