My only real issue with gold plated watches is lack of durability. The plating comes off or scratches so easily and looks terrible when it comes off, so I avoid it. For me, watches that feel similar to the timeless finish and detail I have come to expect have a starting point of $1,500. Baltic? Maybe. The brand certainly achieves skin diver period aesthetics. I admit I live frustrated by watch manufacturers that under the guise of affordability sell us lesser grade stainless steel and noisy movements and over-polished cases. I am amazed at the watch flaws consumers tolerate. Even Seiko, yes. I just returned a Presage because despite having a beautiful dial, the rest of the watch was deficient at many levels. Accessories? As far as watch rolls, the plasticky look is not the least bit appealing. All in all, enough people like me who long for substance and quality will keep the luxury market alive. I think folks would greatly benefit from learning about luxury entry-level watches. Yes, I realize there are perhaps some non-luxury gems that do not cost a bundle. I am still looking for those and the process is not easy. In my opinion, people are better off buying pre-owned first-rate watches. Vintage watches are also an option if one can pay top dollar for a genuinely well-maintained article. And no, I am not being a snob. The most reliable watch I have ever owned is a $10 Casio. The point is, I was born in the 20th century, and experienced and remember a time when the caliber of materials and quality control were more commonplace. When I was a child in the 60s, being a Swiss Made watch meant something. That is no longer the case, is it?
Thank you for your thoughts here you make a really great point. For brands like Baltic and Lorier, I believe they will eventually aspire to bring their quality (of materials and finish) and thusly their prices up to entry level luxury. For those who live check to check, it gets exhausting to see all of the luxury pieces you cannot afford online and never get to feel proud of what you have. Baltic and Lorier seem fill those gaps at the lower end ($300-$700) and act as a bridge upstream.
