T-Boz helped write this song. It was a poem she wrote while in the hospital. After seeing a episode of Ricky Lake where the men were referring to woman as "fat pigs" and other disgusting things. Gave the poem to their producer Dallas to turn into a song. I love this song. I grew up with TLC being my favorite songs to listen to. I loved them. T-boz and her unique low, sultry voice, Left Eye and her adorableness, and Chilli with the ability to look sexy no matter what she wore or did. Way more to them than that obviously. Left Eye was an amazing person. So much more to her than I ever knew. i watched a documentary called "The Last Days of Left Eye" it's tons of self recorded type videos, edited to make a documentary. She had an incredible mind and soul. I highly recommend watching it. It changed my life.

Left Eye using the sign language was an original idea, she was always very innovative and ahead of her time. Chilli was always the best actress in their videos and T-Boz was the one that stood out the most to me particularly for her husky tone and crazy hairstyles. Is it me or is there a missing piece in this video? I remember a scene in which T-Boz portrayed a victim of bullies nearby a bus or something. I guess there is a second version of the video.

honestly i don't think this song got enough credit. It touched bases on on some pretty deep issues that women go through. Especially with what is deemed as beautiful socially more acceptable in society of appearances and why young girls develop eating disorders.
I mean it was a #1 song and it got major props back then. I feel like TLC has been out of the spotlight for some time, so a lot of the new generation doesn't know about them. Still, singers like Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga both said that this song and TLC in general inspired them to start singing and performing.
It was also nominated for Song of the Year at the Grammys (but lost to Carlos Santana who tied Michael Jackson's record for Grammy wins in one year). But, yeah, not enough credit compared to their other hits.

I wish I had heard this song when I was a teen at 18. I weighed 99 lbs and had a tiny chest. I always felt so insecure. I should have appreciated my body like it was. Everyone should feel good about their bodies.
I wish I had understood at 18 what I do now. People will try to mold you to be what they want you to be, and it's never worth it. You are the only one living in your body, and you are the one who has to like it.. You and Only You.

My daughter is 15 and is going through this right now. Yesterday as I was leaving for work I happened to forget something. When I walked in my daughter had on enough makeup for 3 people. I couldn’t even recognize her. I wanted to yell at her because I thought she was being too “grown “ . Later on after work when I sat her down to talk about it she burst into tears and told me how she doesn’t feel pretty enough. I was stunned and shocked. I had to make her understand that God made her perfect and to not focus on comparing herself to others. This song instantly came to mind. I played this song for her and I could see the happiness it brought to her !!!! Thank you for something so beautiful and inspiring.

This song is very special to me, it's during a time in my life that I was feeling really horrible & very scared‼️ It was dedicated to me from my daughter when I beat cancer, but the loss of hair, weight loss & overall changes to my body were a little to much for me to take in😢. But when she played TLC "unpretty" & said mom ty for fighting n beating cancer, that's what really matters & you are & will always be my beautiful mother🤗❣️ I always think of her when I hear this song😘....I love you very much my beautiful daughter❣️I fought 3×'s over & have been in Remission for 4 years now‼️💋💖💚

I cried when I read your comment. I'm fighting diabetes, and everything that comes with it. I was very unhappy for a long time, and I started eating. I went from being a slim in shape 22 year old to a big fat broken down 43 year old. This quarrentine forced me to once again find myself and I realized what I was doing. So I made a change!!
