Chasing Waterfalls" is TLC's way of expressing how people chase intangible dreams with no thought of the consequences. The first verse is talking about an inner city mother-and-son relationship. He is chasing "waterfalls" (money and respect by dealing drugs), but his mother knows this cannot end well. The second verse deals with a man's relationship with a woman. His "waterfall" is casual sex - he has a "natural obsession for temptation." This could mean he is cheating on someone or the woman he is seeing is cheating on someone. Either way, he contracts HIV and dies ("three letters took him to his final resting place"). TLC were big on AIDS awareness - Left Eye would often wear condoms attached to her clothes and in her glasses to promote safe sex.
Actually the girl has a "natural obsession for temptation". She is the one who slept with so many guys and she had HIV and the boy got sick by HIV thanks to her.

This song is so powerful, raw, and real. T- Boz did exactly as they said and "got the message across without seeming like we were preaching." It also dispelled the myth back then that you couldn't get HIV/AIDS from a woman and the fact that they showed a white, heterosexual couple with the disease shows that it wasn't just a "gay and/or African American only" disease. The purpose of rap and hip hop is to spread awareness of social issues and give lessons as well as being entertainment. They did a great job.

Waterfalls is one of the greatest and most meaningful songs of all time. Its basically about not taking life for granted and not giving into temptation. Lisa's part is so poignant and iconic! Nearly 30 years later its message is still relevant in 2022. Their will never be an era of music like the 90s! Long live the 90s and TLC! Rest in peace Left-eye.

It’s a real bummer that they always cut Lisa’s rap out of the radio edit. It’s probably for time restrictions. But l really wish that they left it in. Because it’s part of the song.
I once did a facebook test about what was popular when my i was conceived, and this song came up. So i guess i could say this song is deeper than my dad was in my mom that day.
I think metaphorically this song is about not taking risks so fast, especially when you don't know what you're getting into. The lakes and rivers is safety, and the waterfalls are risks. Like that old saying think before you act, that's the same for living in extremes, the more you get in to it, the more it'll cost you your life. We need more songs like this that gives you a message about how to live a balanced life.
she cant be gone i swear it the whole thing doesnt sit right with me if she is dead and i do mean if because i have my douts and i knows its crazy but if she is dead she is with all the other kings and queens we have. lost along the way i still have this fantasy that one day she just gonna show up and be fine i know its unrealistic but i wont let go she isnt dead until she has been thought of for the last time and i will never forget her

I was fourteen when this hit number one in the summer of 1995. I remember loving it back then, but boy, I didn't even have a clue. I looked up the lyrics, and they hit so differently now.
I was 12 when i got my TLC album. I knew what this song meant, its pretty clear in its verbage. I think what hits harder now is fully understanding the implications(side effects) of the stories and everyone it effects and how. Wisdom over knowledge in this situation, its pretty clear the subjects they are talking about, the actual impacts on life around the stories is something you have to actually live to understand. I grew up a bad kid, got into a lot of trouble and saw my parents frustration and sadness. Two people i knew got shot and killed at that time, one died in jail. Later on two more got dead living the game... that i had left by that point. Its just fucking sad. Then you have AIDS and it was something that even 12 year old me knew about, from school and the news. The AIDS epidemic was brutal back then, i met someone years back that got it from being drugged and raped. Luckily hes still around thanks to advancements in medicine but... fuck man. So many people died. Of course, another big factor in knowing about the AIDS part was that Forest Gump also came out in the same year.
Even at 51 years old, this song still gives me the chills. I was living life like every character in this video. Been with over 200 women, sold drugs in Baltimore throughout the 80s and 90s, got shot and went to prison for years. This was all after dealing with a dysfunctional family inside of the house and bullied outside of the house. But I'm thankful to still be alive.
I am impressed with your insight. You seem like someone that really rode the roller coaster of life and survived. I respect you for being honest you are truly blessed.
You right !!! I'm 42 and remember it word for word .. remember carefree me and didn't know how right my momma was when she said stop trying to grow up so fast ... I miss being home with my momma protected from the stresses of adulting .
They don't want that, they want to break down the family, so your stuck to hedonism and materialsm, but.... good music exists you just have to go looking for it and not be influenced by what's "popular" Because it's sponsored by special interests groups. Strategically selected for nefarious undisclosed purposes, sorry folks your idols are all curated because they are willing to play ball with the master Architects plans.
@@germanikolaas Great rant i would like to respond but who are they? and nefarious purposes? Master architects? You are painting things with a broad brush you need to be a little more specific.
"Three letters took him to his final resting place" Jesus that shit is too sad and too real. The 90's were a hell of a time both good and bad. Still wish I could go back, it's better than now even ignoring the pandemic and widespread panic. So many things that I miss.
Each time period is good in it's own way, if someone doesn't like nowadays it means his/her best days are gone, they didnt succeed eventually, its okey to have a nostalgia, but c'mon, people, stop complaining and do something if this time/generation is so bad...
I remember seeing Tlc perform this song as an opening act just a few years ago or so and when it got to Left eye's rapping part, I got very emotional 😢😢😢!!!
Like 2pac and Aaliyah, Left Eye was one of those talented artists that left this world too early with such an amazing talent. RIP to all the fallen artists of the music industry.
Did you know the part that says"three letters took him to his final resting place" it's about HIV? This song treats about drug addiction but also about HIV. 3:04
Karen Walker, yes I did know that. freakin' sad shit. Any mother (real mother) can relate to this if any of their kids went that way. Such a moving song.
In my opinion, the people who don't find this music-video should search a lot as I did: is a question of preseverance untill we reach what we desire in find...and not a brilliant mind on the net or informatic...only try to say that, like in our lifes, we must try to reach at least, the less that we wish for🧏♀️🇵🇹
I think people tend to overlook at how monumental this song/video was and is. Not only for the message but the overall impact it made when it premiered. TLC as a group brought urban and social awareness to the forefront of pop culture at a time when soceity was plagued by stigma. They literally made the world stop and pay attention to the relevance of African American youth and the hiv/aids epidemic. No female group has ever dominated in the many ways TLC has. They were the first.
Back in the 16th century no matter what happened people always blamed god for it and they prayed every day, the beliefs in god back then were really strong/I was just trying to give people a different perspective on the belie very in god
Tee Mee was thinking this after just watching. haven't seen this since it was on MTV. there's really nothing anymore like this in the rap and rnb genres. it's like they really did this song for the people/fans, not for themselves so fans just buy their music. on a side note, I really think after 9/11 all this went away. we became scared as a nation and focus is more on ourselves. making sure we're secure at the price of dismissing our community and surroundings. the 90's weren't perfect, but it was on a decent track for community until it was completely derailed in 2001. lots of things changed, and even though it's not a sharp line, there's a major split from music pre and post 9/11. more than the usual contemporary progression. genuine useful messages in a song are a sad rarity these days. damn.
Tee Mee this was a great song as a young kid I didn't appreciate how good this song was it had a great message and also displayed great musicianship with the band in the background this song touched so.many people's lives and so many people could relate to this song my mom is another generation obviously but u know when this song comes on she jams to it any song from my Era that my parents jam too I know is good music
It's crazy how good left eye was. Her flow and her tone of voice was unbelievable and effortless. She would be a mega star to this day topping the charts.
Mom and dad are goin' out for the evening And you're stuck inside the house all alone That's when you decided it might be fun to harass someone Dial a random number up on your telephone You ask if their refrigerator is running Then you tell 'em they should go out and catch it Buddy, if they ever figured out where you were callin' 'em from They'd come and bust your head right in with a ratchet Listen to me Don't go makin' phony calls Please stick to the seven-digit numbers you're used to I know that you think it's funny drivin' folks up the wall But it's really gettin' old fast Little Melvin has a natural obsession Askin' for Prince Albert in a can He gets a kick each time he makes a collect call To some guy he doesn't know who lives in Japan He's callin' strangers up at three in the morning Gives 'em pizza pie delivery at four He won't be laughin when they're tracin' his line One day the phone police will be there at his door Yo, hear me Don't go makin' phony calls
Everyone who was born 1985-2005 heard this song on the radio constantly and let me tell u something. . . IT NEVER GOT OLD❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ *Edit* : Would you people stop being rude to this comment. Like I was literally saying if you were born from those years, you heard it for the first years of your life . NOT when it came out or what your generation is. Smh.
@Astuteous Maximus yes!! I click on and it's more of the same repetitive sh1t.... So l click out again 😔. As l kid l loves the lyrics and listened to the message. Chasing water falls was chilling yo me "three letters took him to his final resting place". Phil Collins did the same thing a strong message or real talk..
Emily Savrin I think it's deeper than aids and HIV... its about him prioritsing the wrong things in life and he should have stuck to the safer things 'the things hes used to'. so because he went chasing waterfalls he died
Rip Lisa Lopes God bless her soul. :( Great job girls for continuing with your music career after sudden incident from 2002. Left eye will be missed. Good luck!
Lisa left eye was, IS amazing! I watch Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. She was on today playing for charity, among other musicians. She told Regis she was on the 11th day of a fast. She felt great. Drinking juices and sea moss She looked amazing. Vibrant. It was a rerun from 2001. Less than a year later she passed away in a auto roll over. Lisa, trying to get away from the hype, etc. Live healthy, whole, peaceful Very very sad. What a talent. What a loss.......
I don’t think they were underrated at all. Maybe these days, but back then they were da GIRLS. You need to hear more of their hits, it’s not just Waterfalls, No Scrubs or Creep.
The scene where they turned into water scared the shit out of me when I was younger. It reminded me of "terminator 2". Other than that, the video was amazing as well as the song with a positive message. "Don't go chasing waterfalls."
I was so obsessed with tlc. When they were up and coming I got a 3 song tlc cassette for free, being handed out at a concert (REMEMBER WHEN THEY USED TO DO THAT AT CONCERTS!?) I went home and listened to it on repeat until my walkman shredded the tape on me😢 i bawled. Left eye was everyones favorite 😍 im sure of it.
I thought the lyrics made the darkness pretty clear without the video. "Another body laying cold in the gutter" and "Three letters took him to his final resting place."
Jessica Johnson basicly one kid was slangin dope and payed with his life. dont do that shit. the other guy liked to fuck raw and caught aids. practice safe sex.
“Three letters took him to his final resting place, y’all don’t hear me” YALL DONT HEAR HER, there are still people going around without a condom and no doctor appointment and it’s honestly sad
Makes me grateful my son finally sought help for his addiction. The night I found his car at the hospital I was at rock bottom, too and didn't care if he took his own life because I was so tired of fear. Waterfalls Lyrics 🌊
A lonely mother gazing out of her window
Staring at a son that she just can't touch
If at any time he's in a jam she'll be by his side
But he doesn't realize he hurts her so much
But all the praying just ain't helping at all
'Cause he can't seem to keep his self out of trouble
So, he goes out and he makes his money the best way he know how
Another body laying cold in the gutter
Listen to me
Don't go chasing waterfalls
Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to
I know that you're gonna have it your way or nothing at all
But I think you're moving too fast
Little precious has a natural obsession for temptation
But he just can't see
She give him loving that his body can't handle
But all he can say is, "Baby, it's good to me"
One day he goes and takes a glimpse in the mirror
But he doesn't recognize his own face
His health is fading and he doesn't know why
Three letters took him to his final resting place
Y'all don't hear me
Don't go chasing waterfalls
Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to
I know that you're gonna have it your way or nothing at all
But I think you're moving too fast
I seen a rainbow yesterday
But too many storms have come and gone
Leavin' a trace of not on God-given ray
Is it because my life is ten shades of gray
I pray all ten fade away
Seldom praise Him for the sunny days
And like his promise is true
Only my faith can undo
The many chances I blew
To bring my life to anew
Clear blue and unconditional skies
Have dried the tears from my eyes
No more lonely cries
My only bleedin' hope
Is for the folk who can't cope
Wit such an endurin' pain
That it keeps 'em in the pourin' rain
Who's to blame
For tootin' caine in your own vein
What a shame
You shoot and aim for someone else's brain
You claim the insane
And name this day in time
For fallin prey to crime
I say the system got you victim to your own mind
Dreams are hopeless aspirations
In hopes of comin' true
Believe in yourself
The rest is up to me and you
Don't go chasing waterfalls
Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to
I know that you're gonna have it your way or nothing at all

Waterfalls is one of the greatest and most meaningful songs of all time. Its basically about not taking life for granted and not giving into temptation. Lisa's part is so poignant and iconic! I think metaphorically this song is about not taking risks so fast, especially when you don't know what you're getting into. The lakes and rivers is safety, and the waterfalls are risks. Like that old saying think before you act, that's the same for living in extremes, the more you get in to it, the more it'll cost you your life. Haha almost every 90s music video has a random desert scene thrown in 😂 the good ole days
I was fourteen when this hit number one in the summer of 1995. I remember loving it back then, but boy, I didn't even have a clue. I looked up the lyrics, and they hit so differently now.
We were too young to understand the deep message of this masterpiece... Now that we're older it hits harder. 😭 😭
Too hard
Hey
I always knew what it meant, but agreed!!
Ok
Even at 51 years old, this song still gives me the chills. I was living life like every character in this video. Been with over 200 women, sold drugs in Baltimore throughout the 80s and 90s, got shot and went to prison for years. This was all after dealing with a dysfunctional family inside of the house and bullied outside of the house. But I'm thankful to still be alive.
I am impressed with your insight. You seem like someone that really rode the roller coaster of life and survived. I respect you for being honest you are truly blessed.

A true modern classic, yet still relevant to today's youth. Silky, smooth style...simply fantastic.

RIP Lisa
I did not realize this was song was this sad when I was younger....
Geeze, neither did I
@@rasheriff and I always thought it was “Jason” not “chasing” so when I was little I’ll be like “don’t go Jason’s waterfall”
@Sleek Stitch i see it wasn't just me. Sad as hell
You not learn English in America
Lol fr I thought she was advising against the dangers of actual waterfalls omg, either that or she was telling a guy named Jason Waterfall 'don't go'
i'm not missing waterfalls for this, WATERFALLS IS MY JAM!
Scream Queens😍
+ordinarydannyboy i was lowkey waiting for the rap
+ordinarydannyboy it is a song about getting AID and HIV
"she gives him loveing his body can't handle" to a derict reference to her son getting AIDS
Good luck!
Dam Lefteye could rap n sing! So young n beautiful 😢R I.H. Lefteye
Lisa "Left - Eye" Lopes! Forever in our hearts! 🕯️
She was pretty
Also in my heart. ua-cam.com/video/PRuXc-KW-2o/v-deo.html
Lisa left eye was, IS amazing! I watch Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. She was on today playing for charity, among other musicians. She told Regis she was on the 11th day of a fast. She felt great. Drinking juices and sea moss
She looked amazing. Vibrant. It was a rerun from 2001.
Less than a year later she passed away in a auto roll over. Lisa, trying to get away from the hype, etc. Live healthy, whole, peaceful
Very very sad. What a talent.
What a loss.......
man I miss this style of music, todays music is so different
RobloxBoss yeah music now sucks compared to the 90s
RobloxBoss yea😳
Hi from 2024
TLC was underrated as big as they were. Their lyrics were special too.
I don’t think they were underrated at all. Maybe these days, but back then they were da GIRLS. You need to hear more of their hits, it’s not just Waterfalls, No Scrubs or Creep.

@@jmontenegro1124 . Don't go chasing water falls,
Don't go chasing water falls
This song still means the world to me! 💖💖💖
TLC is an iconic girl group from the 90s. Their music is as poignant and relevant today as the day it was first released. Love them. ♥ 🎶 🎤 🎹

One hit and fading into complete irrelevancy isn't exactly the qualities of "iconic" but sure I guess..
The scene where they turned into water scared the shit out of me when I was younger. It reminded me of "terminator 2". Other than that, the video was amazing as well as the song with a positive message. "Don't go chasing waterfalls."
Lol
***** It still kinda freaks me out.
***** LMAO me too!!! hahahahaha
***** you are scary of everythink anyway so whats the difrience....
tom tailor where you know me from?
I hate the radio version. Because they always leave Left Eye's verss out.
Joshua McKeever Ikr.The only somewhat radio that will play it is Pandora, lol
Radio virgin or radio version?
radio virgin?
version. Virgin means something else.
It's like aloud and allowed.
They sound the same but have different spellings.
I know and that’s the best part
🙏🙏 Prayers for our Queen 👑 T-Boz,I hope she sees this message , Sending you hugs and blessings 🌹🌹🤗
This song wasn't just a hit, it was a phenomenon. It like, rippled across the globe for a few months.
Right
TLC are legends. They all are beautiful.
I can't belive there are humans that don't know TLC exist.
When I said I love TLC, this girl said “the tv show”?
I was so disappointed
Who ever does not know tlc truly does not know thier music these ladies worked hard to get as far as they did left eye will forever be missed
Right I talk about them at school and people litterly be like who that like omg
lifeofaaron it’s not even a TV show, it’s an entire channel... making that reply even more derp
Luhan Lufawn I’m one of them😁😁😁
I was so obsessed with tlc.
TLC Had Sooo Much Potential To Change The World 🌎🙌🏾
Blue .Barrymore I said what I said
Nobody can change the world, ever. TLC just made/makes it a better place to live.
Had??? Lol they did what you mean
Too bad they got older and in the music industry once you get older people don't like you as much anymore because you have wrinkles
Same with nipsey hussle, but they got to them too soon
wow this song is a lot darker than I thought
Lance Cochran Please explain I'm so confused
I thought the lyrics made the darkness pretty clear without the video. "Another body laying cold in the gutter" and "Three letters took him to his final resting place."
Jessica Johnson basicly one kid was slangin dope and payed with his life. dont do that shit. the other guy liked to fuck raw and caught aids. practice safe sex.
“Three letters took him to his final resting place, y’all don’t hear me” YALL DONT HEAR HER, there are still people going around without a condom and no doctor appointment and it’s honestly sad
Awesome 😎💯 and enjoy your special day with your friends and family 😙💓 Hopeing you have a great time !😊😂
This song takes me way back
Makes me grateful my son finally sought help for his addiction. The night I found his car at the hospital I was at rock bottom, too and didn't care if he took his own life because I was so tired of fear. Today, years later, he is doing so well; new wife, nice home with a pool even, job for a long time only he started smoking cigarettes along with his wife.
Thank you for that
I find you everywhere
@@fruityziplock8876 then you have amazing taste in music it seems lol
