    That mantis is not fully grown yet. Mantids go through various stages of development (L1(baby) - L8(adult)). It looks like the mantis you found is probably L6 or L7. If you look closely where the thorax meets the abdomen you can see the wing buds are starting to develop. When the mantis has it's final shed, that's when it will get it's wings :) ---- I've owned several mantids.

    I believe this mantis might be a D. Truncata, as opposed to Lobata.
    Also this is not as big as it'll get. This one has one moult to go and it'll be a fully grown adult, with a full set of wings. The adults have a spectacular defence posture, using the brightly coloured inside of the raptorial arms and wings.

      Wow! I didn’t know that! But my opinion. The cockroaches kinda look like flat beetles but they are not related due to the birth cycle.

    As a zoology student in Sarawak, during our field ecology that involve us catching and releasing back those animal, we encountered most of these animals. Especially that liogaster. It bit me and my finger bleed 😅. We also caught several nasuta frogs and almost killed them due to improper handling 🥲

    I really enjoyed seeing the Frog. The Dead leaf mantis was really cool too though. We have a whole bunch of small Preying Mantises running around here at my house in SLC Utah. They are about 1” to 1 1/2” long right now at the end of July.

    Creatures that can camouflage are always cool! I've seen a orchid mantis, I've never seen a dead leaf mantis though. All of these creatures are awesome!

    the species of the mantis is Deroplatys desiccata, not Deroplatys lobata, and no it is not a fully grown adult, it is a sub-adult female, it needs to molt once more to become an adult

    As a kid I always dreamt of having a job going out into nature and catching things! That Wallace's flying frog is one of my all time favorites! That mantis was an awesome find as well! To encounter so many things in nature that you do must be so invigorating!

    Awesome video! Just one small correction for the sentence at 7:33: This is not an adult specimen, since it doesn't have fully developed wings yet. So they do in fact get bigger. This one is most likely subadult or presubadult.

    I saw a giant walking stick walking across a busy road in TX. It was so beautiful, but who knows if it ever got across. It was so big I saw it briefly at a stop light, but I did not have enough time to get out or anything.

    I've lived in Southern California L.A. County cities my entire life. And sure I've seen plenty of mantids at different houses.
    But the house Im at now near North East Long Beach, I've never seen so many. Some summers, it's an infestation. I love em, but why so many now? Is it just area even though I've lived in literally the touching 3 cities next to me and never saw this many? So cool to try and hold em, some are really chill. Others, not so much. I've actually held more chill females than males.
