I started investigating about mushrooms for inspiration for a DnD campaign in the Underdark and I had no idea there are so many unbelievable yet real cool fungi that can be adapted perfectly to fantasy scenarios. My party’s getting grilled Underdark Puffballs for dinner.
When I was kid, I pick up this mushrooms with my father. In old Czechoslovakia s forest. Mom made them like schnitzels. (Cover in flower, eggs and in bread crumbs and fried them in oil) It was delicious! Inside juicy with gorgeous flavor.
When I was a kid we spent a summer in Silverton, Colorado while my dad did a work project. We picked so many wild mushrooms and dried them on fishing line hanging across the ceiling of the cabin we stayed in, it looked like a cloud covered sky. We ate those dried mushrooms for years to come. When you know what NOT to eat, wild mushrooms are the best. Store bought mushrooms taste like Styrofoam in comparison.
They definitely are excellent mushrooms. I grew up in the Mt. Lassen area of Northern California. My parents were modern day hubter gatherers. We rarely ate anything bought from a grocery store. Both of my parents rifle and archery hinted mule deer, fished, gigged bull frogs, were harvested crawdads, foraged morel and puffball mushrooms, gooseberry, blackberry elderberry and they grew a garden. My grandma gave me the foraging bug as a child, taking me around the lakes, near marshes and through the woods, nibbling things. Those were the good ways. Thank you for sharing your adventures and bringing up nostalgic memories. I recently moved from Eastern Washington State to rural upstate NY. I have been itching to go find some fiddleheads and ramps. Neither of which I've tried yet. If I can ever find time to go exploring, perhaps I'll find a morel or two. So many new wild edible to forage for. Did you finish your bird house project ? That maple was a great find. I love the idea you had for it.
Yes I did finish the bird feeder. We love looking for and eating ramps and fiddleheads, really like the fiddleheads in butter, taste just like asparagus. Chris
Just found my first giant puffball mushroom today believe it or not. Was bout the size of a really big softball. Ate the whole thing after slicing it into 1/4 inch slabs. Was soooooooo good! Fried them in butter with little salt and pepper. Cant wait to find one your size to try the grill!

Yum! Yum! Yum! Am almost 70 now, but my Dad was the Mushroom Man. When out "mushrooming" with him decades ago, it was a treat to find a puffball. It was a family effort each August/early Sept. to put up the mushrooms. A light sauté in butter and then frozen. Picked enough to last a year.
I've been having a fixation on mushrooms as of late, and puffballs are def my favorite so far. It's so cool, the fact that these things can just pop up out of the ground And it's nice, to see a cute lil couple cooking together You two seem really nice :]
I'm originally from lower michigan. My family use to get them in cow pastures. Grandma would slice them up and dip them in a egg bath and seasoned flour and fry. Oh how I miss those meals. Always can find wild asparagus along the road ways as well. Thank you for bringing back a lost childhood memory. ❤
I just got home from morel 🍄 hunting, and came across this video. I always knew I could eat a puffball but always gave the a swift soccer kick. after watching this I will harvest them and eat them. good video
I had to chuckle when you tasted your grilled puffball. When something tastes so good, it's hard not to sound like all those cooking shows! : ) I hope you continue to find plenty of puffballs and other wild mushrooms. Happy foraging.
I just found some beautiful giant puffball specimens the other day, and fried them with panko bread crumbs seasoned with some salt, pepper, garlic, onion and oregano. They were absolutely delicious! To make them, you have to cut off the part that was on the ground, and then peel away the outer layer of skin, cut them in 1/4 inch slices, soak in egg, cover in bread crumbs, and fry in a little vegetable oil or canola oil. Unbelievably delicious! They were so big that we had two nights worth of food!
Awesome video my grandfather used to take us puffball hunting in late September in New York, and he had special places that only he knew where they would grow each year. They are fantastic and not many people know about this, I cube them and boil them then take them out And fry them in butter onions and peppers, delicious. Thanks for sharing this

We found one the size of a soccer ball! Had no idea you could eat them, how awesome. Can't wait to have it for dinner tomorrow night! Really enjoyed the video☺
I 'found' one similar size about 30 years ago in a nursery I worked - was amazed and picked it for taking home. I showed the nursery owner who was furious as he knew exactly where it was and what it was, he had been collecting them every year for himself 😲 He did let me take it though and it was delicious fried - never had one since
I liked when he said, "I'm going to leave them on until I think they're done." Lol ...but seriously, cool video! I'm in Dallas and I've never seen one of these things. I don't even like mushrooms but now I'm dying for a puffball mushroom steak!
I've always wanted to find a giant edible Puffball! I hear they grow to the size of sheep in the state of Washington. When I encounter them, they have turned to the stage where they puff out their spores. I know in Iowa that some have been found the size of volley balls.
Y'all are great! What a find! Sounds like you have a pet leopard in the background, ha! Thanks for sharing, we enjoy foraging and finding these kinds of treasures too.
I found some hens on an old oak that was cut down maybe 2 years previous and it was sept but its was dried out by high winds and no rain...I hope to check it this year for a dinner.

Puff balls are my absolute favorite ones to eat. I used to find them on golf courses. I dont care for the really big ones. They should be firm and taste wonderful. If they get like that one, they are getting close to not being good. I always peel off the outside cover. Never tried them on the grill. August is the best time to find them. Yummy!
Christina, puff ball mushrooms are the perfect beginners mushroom for wild foraging. Do some reading and listening and you'll see what to look out for and what to avoid.
Same. I just started recently as a hobby. Don't trust myself with "gilled" mushrooms yet, but giant puffbals, chicken of the woods, and chanterelles are pretty easy to identify with a little bit of studying. I just tried chicken of the woods for the first time and I really liked it!

Minnesota? Wisconsin? Love your video. Ate a smaller one recently. Puffballs appear in late summer and early fall over much of the US, mostly on mowed turf. They're easy to mistake for a big ball lying on the ground, and the brown ones look like a loaf of bread. There are some little ones that grow on fallen hardwood trees. Those, too, are good to eat. AVOID THE SPINY ONES!!!
Yay! I found one about that size yesterday. First time trying it - I made sure to look for all the signs to make sure it's a normal and edible puffball! Grilling it sounds like an amazing idea.
An extra tip about trying a foraged food for the first time, especially wild mushrooms. Even if store bought mushrooms never give you a reaction, a wild mushroom may cause an allergic response. Always taste test first & always fully cook wild mushrooms unless you've observed someone safely consume them.raw & it's considered safe by the whole world.
Where I'm from the older generation guys would walk around with baskets and comb farmers fields/forests or golf courses etc for puff balls, it was a true sign of September. Nowadays you don't see old men walking to collect them anymore it's too bad. I love puff ball cooked with Italian sausage, peppers, onion and butter.
These look great, hope a find one some day. Just found some Shaggy mane ink cap yesterday that was young enough to eat, it was delicious. I have found shaggy mane a bunch of times before but they were always inky this was the 1st time i found them at the right time.
Yeah they have a very short shelf life.... probably the shortest. Actually just found another shaggy mane right in my front yard, the flavor is so different only way I can think of describing it is kinda like lobster but with no fishy flavor. It's just rich and savory when fried in butter.
Yum!!! And if you find brown ones stomp on them. It's fun lol. When I was a little kid my favorite thing to do during fall was walk along my back yard looking for big acorns, dark tan puffballs to stomp and throw and turtles to put in my sand box. I kept them as pets for a few hours. Mom never let me keep them, she always told me I have to let them go after a while because there family would miss them lol
i never seen one ... i never knew there was mushrooms that big, i would put that on a roll with a bunch of other things and have a real mushroom burger
Nice video. I just had one pop up in my yard and thought I'd do a little research before picking it. These downpours here in Michigan lately sure have mushrooms popping up everywhere.
Couldn't silence those taste buds could you! Ha Ha! Nice find on the bird feeder...love to find rare wood growths and display them. Great idea on that one.
IKR, didn't want to look like they do on TV when the taste something but it happened anyway. The bird feeder turned out great & the birds like it too. Thanks for watching, Chris
They edit out all the waiting time, silly. it would be a very long, dull video if they didn't. So 3 minutes might seem like 30 seconds to someone like you who isn't paying attention.
Cool video.. I'd really like to find one of these or some chicken of the woods to grill up for my mom and me to try... also, that bird feeder idea is awesome. I love keeping my eye out while I'm in the woods for stuff I can take home and make something out of.
Thank you for a very nice video!I have been walking today on a field near my house and found one medium size puff ball.Cut it on chunks, fried with butter, added one egg, salt, pepper, fresh parsley-it was delicious !
Grilled some up in the same manner for the first time today. The whole family made noise when we ate it. Told me it was OK to do it again. :) Thanks for the recipe.
Great video. These look delicious. Used to see giant puff ball all the time as a kind round my grandparents house in Ohio. Next time I head there I'll see if I can find them.

I remember finding the older, dried up Puff Balls as a kid growing up in the 70s and 80s, when they break open and release spores that resemble powder but I had no idea they were once an edible mushroom!
Never had these but I feel like some good white cheese with basil and tomato and cream would be awesome with this on some fresh floured outside loaf of bread

This is by far the most interesting mushroom i have ever seen!! In Holland we only have these big mushrooms that puff powder from the inside and these spores and the mushroom are poisoness!! How can i define the eatable ones!! ( or do they only grow in America??)
They are probably the same mushroom, after they turn yellow on the inside, then they start sporing & that is what you are talking about. Do a google search & see if they are infact the same mushroom. Chris

Cool, it turned out great grilling it. Good luck with yours. Chris
Great advice for all to heed. Chris
Nummy
I like them with eggs. Chris
Same here. I was a little kid when I saw an old man hunting mushrooms. I had no idea at the time what he was doing.
Mmmm, Cemetery mushrooms. Is anyone else a little disturbed by this?
🎶It's the circle of liiife, and it moooves us alll 🎶
Nope!
yes
I admit... I considered the source of its nutrients.
Great vid!!! But who was so inconsiderate to start sawing during your taping lol
That was my St. Bernard that is no longer with us making all the noise. Chris
These look great, hope a find one some day.
Just found some Shaggy mane ink cap yesterday that was young enough to eat, it was delicious. I have found shaggy mane a bunch of times before but they were always inky this was the 1st time i found them at the right time.
I haven't tried the shaggy manes yet as I'm always to far away from some place that I can fry them up before they turn to ink. Chris

Another great video! Thank you for sharing. I will absolutely be looking for some giant ones in the North Woods next summer.
i never seen one ... i never knew there was mushrooms that big, i would put that on a roll with a bunch of other things and have a real mushroom burger
I love the way you all think. Brilliant idea about the bird feeder. Nice job and I wish I was eating some.
Thanks, the bird feeder turned out great, birds love it. Chris
Man, I bet he's a really fungi!

Chris & Kathy Lol, no problem, thanks for the informative video.
friartuck103. YES LOL. that just made my day
He's my grandpa... He not
Chris & Kathy-how do you save the uncooked half of those puff mushrooms 🍄?
Nice video. I just had one pop up in my yard and thought I'd do a little research before picking it. These downpours here in Michigan lately sure have mushrooms popping up everywhere.
Its 2019, thanks algorithm
Stop complaining
Right 😂 Cool video though
I searched for this, loser
Couldn't silence those taste buds could you! Ha Ha! Nice find on the bird feeder...love to find rare wood growths and display them. Great idea on that one.
IKR, didn't want to look like they do on TV when the taste something but it happened anyway. The bird feeder turned out great & the birds like it too. Thanks for watching, Chris
If it's white its alright if there brown they shouldn't go down
Correct, all white inside. Chris
Amen. Look at the comment i just added
Great now the left is going to deam eating mushrooms as now being white supremac behavior as well was nationalist
I have never seen mushrooms that big. I have seen the ones that are about golf ball size. And that Weber is perfect to grill them in since it's round.
Thanks for the comment & for watching my video. Chris
Stop setting the grill cover on the ground. It has a hanger.
And quit fondling em every 30 seconds with the tongs
They edit out all the waiting time, silly. it would be a very long, dull video if they didn't. So 3 minutes might seem like 30 seconds to someone like you who isn't paying attention.
Cool video.. I'd really like to find one of these or some chicken of the woods to grill up for my mom and me to try... also, that bird feeder idea is awesome. I love keeping my eye out while I'm in the woods for stuff I can take home and make something out of.
Thanks, the mushrooms really are a great food and good for you. The birdfeeder turned out great. Chris

Good place to look for it. How many people go to a cemetery to look for mushrooms?
I just had this yesterday and Never seen this before! Mine is same big as you have in your vid!
Thnx for the tip how I cook this!
Grilled some up in the same manner for the first time today. The whole family made noise when we ate it. Told me it was OK to do it again. :) Thanks for the recipe.
Well that's great, glad they liked it. Some people use it as a pizza crust as well. Chris
Totally cool! I happen to be member of your facebook page as well!
Great video! Love the Yooper shirt too
Thanks & thanks for watching. Chris
I have never heard of this mushroom or seen it for that matter, learn something new everyday! thanks for sharing.
Well thank you, glad you watched & learned something. Chris
Great video. These look delicious. Used to see giant puff ball all the time as a kind round my grandparents house in Ohio. Next time I head there I'll see if I can find them.
Thanks for the comment & good luck. Chris
That piece of oak looks awesome. Cool video
Thanks & thanks for watching. Chris
'That one can be yours.' Made me laugh!
Yeah hurr hurr, I also laughed at the wife insisting that the one doing all the work gets the burned piece. Not.
Wow thats huge mushroom. Thanks for sharing.
What method of preserving works best for you?
I don't preserve them as I don't know of any good ways. Chris
Your spot seems awesome man. I too live out in the brush - love it.
I never knew you could eat puffballs, I always see a ton of them in the woods by my house, I might have to try them this year
You sure are making me hungry! It has been years since I found one ready to eat. I guess I need to get out more!! Thank you for sharing. I slice mine thin and fry in oil or butter.. grilling would likely be healthier.
Thanks for watching Barbara, I would think it would be a bit healthier, but what can be bad about butter? LOL
I am curious about the flavor done on the grill. hope to find one that I can actually do that with... Hey.. subscribe to my channel please// I am hoping to get my channel off the ground.. thanks...
Im from Michigan too. You guys sound like good people
We try to be, thanks for watching. Chris
We have puff balls in Missouri never seen one that big ! I’m into morel season in the spring it’s hard to find them where I’m from I love getting out in the woods and hunting . My granny has cooked these I gotta one of these days thank you I know older video I’m learning for future
I remember finding the older, dried up Puff Balls as a kid growing up in the 70s and 80s, when they break open and release spores that resemble powder but I had no idea they were once an edible mushroom!
Yep, there are all kinds of edible mushrooms out there, some very good tasting ones & some that are very healthy & anti cancer. Chris
I'm in s.w. Indiana and ours are in the 3-4 inch rage. Never dreamed they could get that big. That's enough to feed three families!
Like the sculpture , good idea .
Thanks, it turned out pretty nice, the birds like it too. Chris
Love mine fried with olive oil and butter blend with herbs. Yum
Wonder if OZ have these.Cheers
Never had these but I feel like some good white cheese with basil and tomato and cream would be awesome with this on some fresh floured outside loaf of bread
I bet it would, also would make a great pizza crust. Thanks for watching, Chris
Your vid inspired me! I found one today about 2ft in diameter. Its the biggest one I've ever found. I'll be using your method to cook it! Keep up the great videos and cheers my friend!
I hope it turns out as good as mine did, maybe look at my puffball pizza video for something else to do with it. Chris

Thanks for the reply! I've been cooking for hours! Lots to go around!!! Its pretty good and nothing is better than foraging!!!!! You guys rock!
hey awesome , love to see outdoor cooking of the natural
Looks delicious!! I’m gonna try to grow and cook my own puffball mushrooms next year
Can a person but I he spores for different mushrooms?
This is by far the most interesting mushroom i have ever seen!! In Holland we only have these big mushrooms that puff powder from the inside and these spores and the mushroom are poisoness!! How can i define the eatable ones!! ( or do they only grow in America??)
They are probably the same mushroom, after they turn yellow on the inside, then they start sporing & that is what you are talking about. Do a google search & see if they are infact the same mushroom. Chris
Looks good! Thanks for sharing!
