      Perseus’s mother Danae is a direct descendant of Zeus (think great x 6 grandpa)
      Heracles’s mother Alcmene is Perseus’s granddaughter, making her Zeus’s great granddaughter
      Artemis and Apollo’s mother Leto is also Zeus’s cousin
      Hermes’s mother the Pliad Maia is the daughter of Atlas and Pleione (who are cousins to Zeus and each other) making her Zeus’s first cousin once removed on both sides.
      That also makes Zeus be in the same generational level as Maia’s parents.
      And finally, Dionysus’s mother is the mortal woman Semele. She is the daughter of Cadmus and Harmonia. That seems fine at first, but Harmonia is the daughter of Aphrodite and Ares. Aphrodite is either Zeus’s daughter or Aunt depending on who you ask, so Harmonia is either Zeus’s granddaughter or Cousin on that side, and Ares is Zeus’s son, so Harmonia is his granddaughter on that side. Making Semele either his great granddaughter on both sides, or his great granddaughter-First cousin once removed, depending on Aphrodite.
      Conclusion? Zeus is gross

    • @CM-ss5pe
      @CM-ss5pe 2 роки тому +26

      Yes, but Hephaestus was Hera's son, so Athena must have been incubating within Zeus' head for quite some time (Metis being swallowed ->Zeus marrying Hera -> Hera having Hephaestus-> Hephaestus splitting Zeus' head open).
      In one version, Hera forcefully gave birth to Hephaestus by herself because she was jealous of Zeus giving birth to Athena by himself. This version doesn't include Hephaestus splitting Zeus' head open as he wouldn't be born yet as of Athena's birth.

  • @francy8940

    What I really find interesting is the fact that even if the prophecy talked about a male son Athena is still more powerful than Zeus (at least in my opinion), think about it. She's the only one other than Zeus that has access to his lightnings and the Aegis, in every argument or fight she had with other gods she has always won, every faction of a war she has taken the sides with has won and most important she's Zeus' pride, he accepts everything she says and with her cleverness she can easily manipulate him, both emotionally and mentally, and when you can control the big boss, well, YOU become the big boss. I think she doesn't overthrow him just to not create an infinite cycle of child overthrowing the parent.

      I am more willing to blame ancient ideas of monarchy. That if a boy had been born with Athena's traits, even one without interest in ruling, that Zues would be threatened and try to get rid of them, leading to a classic greek story trope of the victim accidentally creating their killer in the attempt to avert fate.

    There was a comment over on one of overly sarcastic productions videos that basically said that Zeus and Metis’s prophesied son was technically Dionysus. Since Metis was a part of Zeus (after he ate/absorbed her) and Zeus gave birth to Dionysus, that made him Metis’s son, too, in a roundabout way. I combined this head canon with another comment that says that Zeus knows Dionysus has the power to overthrow him so he keeps Dionysus perpetually drunk.

      Weirdly enough, I saw a similar but different idea on a mythology themed wiki (so take it with a metric ton of salt, though it _did_ have a source attached so there’s that) that I really liked but am unsure of the authenticity of-basically, Zeus was told he needed a successor and naturally everyone assumed he’d pick one of his sons with Hera, Ares or Hephaestus. Given that these two are some of Zeus’ least favorite people, he’s all like “oh TARTARUS naw!” and instead picks Zagreus, Hades and Persephone’s (comparatively) more well-adjusted son. Hera, naturally, is furious and has the titans rip Zagreus apart for it, but then the Dionysus backstory happens you know the drill.

    There are different stories on what became of Metis after she was eaten. One story implies that Metis turned either into the shield Athena is wearing or the owl that always stands on her shoulder. That would explain why the most famous Greek goddess of wisdom seems to have no interest in knowing what became of her mom.

    • @CM-ss5pe
      @CM-ss5pe 2 роки тому +57

      Actually the prophecy was quite specific. Metis would bore a daughter wiser than her mother (who ended up to be Athena), and a son more powerful than his father. This hypothetical son was also prophesied to overthrow his father, who would be Zeus in this case, that's why he didn't wanna risk it.
      This is also the same reason why Zeus didn't have sex with the nereid Thetis, who was prophesied to give birth to a son greater than his father. So he married her to the mortal king Peleus and she ended up giving birth to Achilles.

    Two things:
    1. My personal headcanon surrounding Métis is that the reason Zeus keeps making stupid decisions is because Métis keeps subtly influencing him and wants him to royally screw up so he can be overthrown, mainly as revenge for him absorbing her.
    2. I find it interesting that some sources say that all of the Big Three were once married to Oceanid nymphs-Zeus had Métis, whom he disposed of when she became a potential threat; one Roman myth had Hades being initially married to an Oceanid named Leuce (Leuke?) who died and was memorialized by either Hades himself or Persephone via a poplar tree; and while she’s usually a Nereid, some stories claim that Poseidon’s wife Amphitrite was an Oceanid. I think this says a lot about all three of them.

    I also think that Athena didn't just pop out of his head. After eating Mytis, Zeus got a headache so painful that he asked Hephaestus to split his head in two with an axe cause he couldn't take it, and when he did Athena popped out. Btw am I the only one imagining Zeus telling Athena "I carried you in my head for (however long he did)" anytime Athena wouldn't listen to him? Lol

    I remember reading somewhere that the Orphics considered Dionysius the prophetized son of Zeus that would overthrow him. Does anyone else know something more about it or did I make it up in a dream?

    • @awesomequuash7417
      @awesomequuash7417 2 роки тому +2

      I read something like that. Basically, before dionyzus there was a god called zagreus, son of persephone, who was killed and eaten by titans, but before his death athena saved his hearth and gave it to dionyzus mother to eat. Next is the whole birth of dionyzus story etc etc. Orphic people believed that humans were created front zagreus body, and each human has a part of him inside that is returned to dionyzus after human death. When dionyzus gets whole body back zagreus will be ressurected and eternal paradise will be achiewed. Hope i helper :)

    “Asked her to turn into a fly”
    There’s a comic book series based on Greek myths and he basically tries to teach her shape shifting and he would transform and she’d transform and that’s how he did it
    He a bird and she the fly but in all honesty it’s just a comic

      That's pretty inline with Hesiod's version, if not a little more Dragon Ball Z. Metis is basically serving as Zeus's advisor from inside his body. You could say she's a part of him now.

    Clearly Metis and Athena weren't giving zeus any advice or wisdom while they were inside, otherwise he would've consulted Apollo, god of healing, for his migraine rather than have Hephaestus crack his head head open. Also, having a baby can be long, arduous process for someone who can give birth; I can't imagine the agony of pushing a fully grown woman (plus her armor and weapons) out of your head.

      Chances are Apollo wasn't born yet at the time. I'm not entirely sure about the birth order of his Olympian kids though, apart from Athena being the oldest and Dionysus being the youngest.

    • @hakksemerci9988
      @hakksemerci9988 2 роки тому

      ares is older than athena and demeter (4th wife) and zeus were a couple before zeus married hera (the 7th wife) so persephone could be older, and hera gave birth to hephaestus after athena born, it was probably prometheus, the first blacksmith of the gods.

    • @chewiecheshire7973
      @chewiecheshire7973 2 роки тому

      @@hakksemerci9988 @Simplyme Mythological canon is truly a nightmare. The versions I've heard has Hephaestus split his head and I though Apollo and Artemis were pretty old in the pantheon, the only thing I know that is generally accepted canon is that Dionysus is the youngest and that Hermes was born after the twins so that he could steal Apollo's cattle. I got the "Hephaestus splitting open Zeus' head" plot point from Jake's video summarizing Greek myth and the OSP theogony video indicates that Athena was born after the twins and Hera's kids. Those are my two main sources, I wouldn't say they're right (because there is no "right" in mythology, just a maddening rabbit hole of dubious sources and speculation), but that's what influenced the comment.

    this could mke a really good movie about athena having to shape herself as a woman to live in peace before transitioning into a men (maybe decide to go back as a woman at the end) to save her mom and punish zeus for eating them. she wouldnt need to cmopletely overthow him, just punish him for a few years before letting him sit back on his throne.
    anyways i don't see how to right a story like this because i have yet to understand the struggles of transitioning, but i could see a moral of having to conform as either sex, and struggling to find a middle ground that would please athena or athenos i guess.

    Sounds like a potential "Thamus, the great god Pan is dead" vs "Tamuz the All-Powerful is dead" misunderstanding. One person explained Zeus using his cleverness, one person thought the word for "cleverness" was a name, story was made up so this personified wisdom to birth Athena.
