- Glasgow Dan - Gaberlunzie. The Original and the best!
Lyrics:
His name was Glasgow Dan, he was the old malodian man.
He sang his songs of peace and justice all across the land.
He sang both rich and bold. With a voice of liquid gold. Bringing happiness and teardrops, to the eyes of yound and old
[Chorus] Glasgow dan the music man singing songs and making music of his country
He was born in Glasgow town. With the shipyards all aroun'
He gained his education. From the gutter, and the ground.
But he listened and he cried. With the music of the clyde, of the cockers and the plaeters, and the turnin' of the tide.
[Chorus]
He was 17 years old, when he first took to the road.
With a battered old malodian, and the sunlight for his load.
For 40 years or more he tramped from shore te shore, singin' songs and making music of the country and its lore.
[Chorus]
He wandered up and down singin' songs from town to town.
At markets and at fairgrounds. In places of renown.
And all he'd ever seek. Was a bed and a bite to eat.
A crack beside the ingle, and a dram before he'd sleep.
[Chorus]
He missed the mighty boer. And the Kaiser's bloody war.
Then in '39 they drafted him far from his native shore.
When next he saw the Clyde...There was shrapnel in his side.
And his songs were filled with sadness. For the countless men who died.
[Chorus]
His name was Glasgow dan he was the old malodian man.
But his heart was surely broken by the cruelties of man.
...So with winters cloak around...
...He just lay down, on the ground...
Since he died...his ol' malodian..hasn't made another sound...
Glasgow dan. The Music man. Singin' songs and making music of his country.
[Repeat]
I'd like to dedicate this video to my Grampa, who meant so much to me. I love you gramps, Rest in Peace.
Remembers me so much of my Granda Mac Donald. A decorated soldier that always said be proud to be Scottish. He was a hero but died in the old soldiers home at Erskin!! This song by Gaberlunzie remembers me of him fondly! He worked in yarrows and Elderslie!
Posted by my son, Connor, 11 years ago now! My how time passes. He still plays this track and we still sing it together. Brings tears to my eyes every single time. Proud of that boy!
This is one of my wife's favorites. Years ago when I lived in Scotland we would go to their gigs any time they were close. As a singer/songwriter myself, they would always invite me on stage to play a song or two--not many performers will do that. Great guys, Gaberlunzie!
been a follower of the Gabs since the late 70's and always will- got nearly every CD and some old tapes, one of which Gordon sent me a copy of on CD
Thanks to my mate Kev I was introduced to this and many other songs by Gaberlunzie as well as a few great nights at the Park Bar. Kev does a great version of this to bring tears to a glass eye.
Introduced to this song by a one off, Gibby fae Linwood, those that know know, he sadly passed away a few years ago, one of the original Euro 92 Clipendales fae the Clippen Inn Linwood, legend.
Still smile about the times and exploits we had, good times , good people 👍 Xx

Man I was raised on the Gabs and been lucky enough to see them a few times.
XxX
My Dad got the gabs and then some. I even had them at his funeral. Emotive and informative are their mantle and even as a son of the Lunz, I still enjoy their music and stories.
Good effort Gordon and Robin, my auld man was moved to tears by you and educated more than just me in your music. I'll always mind the auld folk.
XxX
