  • This is a lo-fi video production of the song I Wish I Was In Glasgow. This one was done on a slow Sunday because I kept thinking of and missing Glasgow that weekend. Sometimes I miss it badly.

My late father James Andrew Wilson was born in Glasgow 1.2.1901 and sadly passed away in South Africa in 1957. Although I was born in South Africa my heart is in Glasgow and at age 71 my wish is to visit Glasgow before I close my eyes. RIP daddy, miss you.

It’s a tough city with tough people and yet, paradoxically, the kindest place whose folk have the biggest, most generous hearts and sense of community. The chorus says it all, if you’ve ever really lived there: it gives you more than it ever takes away and prepares you for life. It did that for me.

I'm sure this song would have an even greater poignancy to me were I actually from Scotland (I'm from the Oakland area in America) but I feel like these themes really transcend borders. There's a very universal feeling of "yeah, this town is a mean piece of shit place, but it's MY mean piece of shit place, and I wouldn't rather be from anywhere else". There will always be parts you don't like (like those special places to you getting torn down, something I'm very familiar with), but there's also the immense blessings to be alive and to be around those you come to know and love. Writing this from college, first long time away from home, and I hope everyone here feels like home is never too far away, at least in spirit.

I wish he’d included a line in the song it preparing for a life on the sea though too. She’s gateway to the Isles, Mulls to St Kilda you’d obviously be aware of especially as a MacDonald. Its a lovely song regardless, just Glasgow’s ne the entire Clyde corridor past Greenock and Lanarkshire relationship to the sea is even greater, even if implied figuratively.
Every city has roads but only Glasgow has the Clyde. But its his song from the heart. May be I should make one to complement it. Buaidh na Bas.

The toilet was shared, and was down an old warn out staircase, which i fell down. Great memories. My mother was born and raised in Glasgow and she might have married a kiwi, and wound up in New Zealand, but she never gave up her country she kept her citizenship and told her children all the stories about her city Glasgow. Years later she took my twin and I back to her Glasgow, but it had changed beyond recognition, it wasn't the place she had left all those years ago and she cried for leaving the city of her birth and went back to New Zealand. But inspite of it all she held fast to her citizenship and never gave it up.

She and her younger sister were evacuated from Glasgow to a farm near Loch Lomond at the start of the 2nd World War. In her note she wrote; "I hated it, I missed my Ma I missed my Da and I missed ma beloved Toon so much. She wrote her Ma everyday begging her to bring her hame, which eventually she did.

Glasgow is the greatest city in th world. The simple reason is the people. I am not a Glaswegian or even Scottish but I have some great friends from the East and West end of the city and visiting them in Glasgow was just a wonderful experience. To be feted just because I did not come from the city by all and sundry was just incredible. Glasgow does have a dark side we all know that but so do all cities. But I will tell you something when you are in Glasgow it is a special feeling and when you leave it is always sad.

Billy is still alive. Billy''s favourite pub in Glasgow was the Scotia Bar. He went to the Saracen Head when he was young, but he admitted it was a shithole. It's looking a lot better now. Originally, The Crucifixion was set in the Saracen Head. As I said Billy is still alive.

Thanks so much for posting this gorgeous song, which I never heard until now. I burst into tears from almost the first note. While I've never been to Glesga (something that must be remedied), I live in Buffalo, NY. Buffalo suffered terribly from deindustrialization in the 1970s and 1980s, and hasn't completely recovered. Nor will it ... but this town has such heart and I love it so much. Billy's love song to Glasgow really touched me, as it describes Buffalo, too. Warmest regards to all of you wonderful Glaswegians.
