Great review! 1) As someone who is currently watching this review on a 150" screen, I don't think I could go back to something as small as 100". If you have the space for it, there is just no replacement for size. 2) There was an inaccuracy in your after-review thoughts. - Off axis viewing on a lenticular ALR screen with a UST projector is WAY better than an LED backlit TV. It's not even close. There is close to no degradation off axis. I can put my head on the wall and look across the screen and the colors are still vibrant. I think perhaps you are speakig about a Fresnel ALR screen. 3) Last inaccuracy I want to address- the explanation of lenticular ALR was a bit off. The above ambient light isn't reflected away. It's absorbed by the black substrate. It is the projector light that is bounce-redirected. I recommend purchasing a cheap handheld microscope when installing a lenticular ALR fixed fram screen. You can see the lenticular structure and make sure it is the right way up. (Be careful though since most handheld microscopes have a flipped image.)
I love both. I have a full Dolby atmos dedicated theater with an epson laser projector and a 106in screen. I also have a 83in lg c2 with a two channel system in my LivingRoom on a two channel system with Kef r3 meta and Lyngdorf tado 1120 and high rise rs250. The lg gives me 80% of what my dedicated system does with great sound but when I want to be fully immersed I go into the theater and get that. I could see myself getting one of these as my next living room tv to complement my theater.
I am a projection enthusiast with a dedicated theater and a Stewart 1.3 gain 150" 2.35 aspect ratio screen. I loved this review, thanks Andrew and Kristi. As I said on your previous video, in the living room this is preferable as you don't need to darken the room and go to the trouble I've been to. With 98" TVs below $4k today we can expect 120" at that price sooner than we expect. No question.... if a 150" 2.39 aspect ratio screen was available under $12k. I'd be there. Thanks again!
@13:25 I just need to correct this one thing. Most ambient rejecting screens will have zero effect on viewing angles. The vast majority of ALR screens are Lenticular structure, which do not affect viewing angles. Some ALR screens have a Fresnel type structure that is slightly more effective but does come at the cost of viewing angle. Obviously I’m in camp projector, but I agree with almost every point made in this video. UST projectors are niche products and come with a lot of compromises in most conditions. At night or in very low light, projection is still more lifelike, cinematic, and immersive on my 120” projection setup. For the vast majority of situations and use cases a 100” tv will be preferred by most people. As a projector enthusiast myself, I respect the light hearted trolling in this video. A lot of us have it coming for being such “🤓 um actually” types. Great video as always!

Thanks and yes, projection is going away in my opinion. I am hampered by my setup to an eighty five inch and lower as my towers will be in the screen but this sort of size will put me in a framing mind for my great room. I love immersive.
Yea, for projectors, never go by images you see online. I watched numerous online video reviews before deciding to purchase our UST projector. I would've gone with a 100" TV, but the number one reason why we went with the projector - a 100" tv would NOT fit up our stairs into our theater room. That is one of the benefits of a projector with a screen is having everything compactly packed up, you can easily get them into rooms that you may not be able to get extra-large TVs into.
Really enjoyed the insight of your brother as it relates to tackling the gaming aspect of such a larger set. I have a 75" now and will patiently wait for price to come down on these large sets in the future to skip the projector and get a large TV for that large movie theater gaming experience.

Really enjoying the new style of editing, very fun watch. I’ve been big into Samsung’s mini-QLED tech. I have the 85’ in QN90A. But I have been keeping my eye on TCL for sometime that maybe that’s the jump I would make some day. Because the price point for a larger tv and they just keep better and better almost every year, but I would need a bigger wall to fit a bigger tv in the first place. I have owned a LG HU85LA UST projector with a 120” ALR screen, a 77” Sony A80J OLED, and now this 98” TCL QM8. This is hands down the best experience out of the three for movies.
Great review! And I’ll die on that hill with you, Andrew! Recently completed my dedicated room with the 97” LG G2. Bigger is better, but there comes a point where it gets big enough, and OLED (and mini LED) image quality at ~100 inches beats any size projector for me. Especially if you’re a gamer. Just wanted to share for those thinking about taking the plunge with a direct-view display for their theater room!
The one advantage for me for projectors is price. I managed to pick up a used short throw 1080p projector for £100, capable of displaying 100 inches. Although I think this TCL screen has got better image quality than the project, it's also $10,000.
Yeah, about this 98 inch TV in November 2023. When I turned it on, I could not believe how beautiful the picture was. I called my friends and family and told them that the TV look like it was halfway to 3-D without glasses.

Great review! I was never a projection guy though I’ve owned a couple. They just don’t fit what I do with a TV. I love that TVs are getting bigger and are still somewhat affordable. I’d love to see you guys review the 98” S5 TCL. I briefly got to see one a couple of weeks ago and I was shocked at how good it looked for the price. I tried to buy one when they had Black Friday pricing but Best Buy had sold out. As they say quantity has a quality of its own. Hook ‘em!
I bought the 75" QM8 for the living room after our old Sony broke. I fell in love with it. I think the blacks looks just as good as the 83" LG C1 I have in the basement on Dolby Vision Bright and turning down the black level a bit. I love it so much I just ordered the 98" beast to replace the C1. 4K and 1080p content look MARVELOUS on this screen. There is some judder on some content and upscaling old TV shows on UA-cam TV can be an adventure. But any modern show looks great and sports are also amazing. I used to have the Optima P1X Pro UST. I like the 120" screen but didn't like the picture nor the finicky HDMI ports. This will give me the immersion of a big screen with the superior picture and ease of use of a TV. Can't wait! 100%. My first 100+ inch TV review was back in 2006 (I think) and that Panasonic Plasma was nearing a quarter million dollars after delivery and installation. Not to mention it required a structural engineer to determine if you could even get it installed, nevermind the electrical circuit concerns. The fact that this can be ordered and delivered via Amazon is MINDBLOWING!

Practical question. On this 98" TV...did you two put this TV on the wall yourselves or do you get outside help? What's the difficulty level for the average couple mounting these huge screens on the wall?
My brother and I mounted it on a wall ourselves using THIS mount amzn.to/3RbkaXs which works great! This TV is roughly 100 pounds without the stand, so it's no lightweight, but it can be mounted by two capable people DIY-style.

Well, I’ve recently invested in the 98 inch TCL C735K. I don’t know the USA equivalent model. It’s stood on a 28 inch high media cabinet against the 19 feet short wall of our lounge. I sit in the centre of a 3 seater sofa 15 feet from the tv. My wife and dog occupy a 2 seater sofa along the 21 feet side wall about 11 feet from the tv and notice no, off access degradation. Set to movie maker mode, brightness is phenomenal. Overall it trumps the 65 inch OLED it replaces.
Two things that need to be pointed out with respect to dedicated spaces. It’s not just the size of the screen they are going for. Dedicated home theaters often (but not always) have acoustically transparent screens with their LCR and often subs behind the screen. This is a big deal and something you can’t do with any TV. As the TV gets larger the center channel or sound bar (ha) have to be placed lower. This means the vocals are coming far too low and will be an issue especially for someone who’s an audiophile. The second issue that also cannot be ignored is that projectors have the ability to work with other aspect ratios than just a fixed 16x9. The “scoped screen” is part of the immersion that the tv cannot replicate. But it’s undeniable that you’re going to get an overall better picture with a tv.
As you touched upon. Problem in a living room area is the big black square. I am still debating which route to go for in our living room downstairs. Motorized floortstanding projection screen which I will build into a bench and a UST or to go 100" tv. It would be a very clean install obviously not as good in daylight. But 120" which more or less would not be visible when not used.
A motorized floor rising screen has way more of a wow factor as well as being a cleaner install. Who cares if daytime viewing loses some contrast. No one is critically watching in a fully lit room anyways.
One hurdle with these 98 inch sized TVs is proper feet stands. If you don’t have the option of wall mounting it ( because of a window), then you have to just stand it on a console. The problem comes with the feet being so wide you would have to get an entirely new console. Samsung is the only one with a center stand for their 98inch tv. Amazon also only has VESA stand legs that go up to 90inches and 150lb max weight. These TVs are more like 165lbs. Hopefully we will see some VESA mount leg stands that we can use for these 98-100 inch TVs. Or manufactures at least will have several feet mounting width options (center stand options).
To me, I feel my front projection system with a Laser light source is great. I have no plans on changing. I believe it comes down to personal preference and how much money you want to throw at the solution.
There’s not a chance this would take the place of my 150 inch screen. It’s super easy to take apart a projector setup. Not so much with a 98 inch tv. Plus it’s only 98 inch, there no replacement for cubic inches in TVs or car engines! 😊
Wow 150. I have seen thoes HIsense 8K resolution n projection TVs in Asian site. N they are HUGE. Wish they sell it here. How is d 150” like? Are they dim? One thing i always worry is the dim n etc.

They are very high price tag they dont even sell it here in North America. I saw this thing called 52UX something something like that…huge TVs . Now u mentioned those Large TVs i wonder what thoes 150 look like. Are they dim? That was my only concern my best friend had a laser tv a few yrs back it looked bit dim n washed out on d wall. N cant have window open. So i guess if it’s in Theatre room it’s great choice….like u said?
I would wager that people looking to drop 4-6K on a big TV and people looking to get a big, cheap-ish image for 1K or less are completely different markets. Big TVs could replace top-of-the-line projector setups in many homes, but won't affect the budget projector market.
I built my own projector screen back in 2012. I had a 720p projector and the screen was 8ftx5ft or about 105in. My first screen and it worked great at night or with blackout curtains. Now that quality tvs are coming out that dive and fairly affordable, I may be inclined to check them out. A 55in tv is VERY small when you downscale but going big on movie night or game day is impressive!
Love the review as always! Your brother not only looks just like you, but you guys have almost identical laughs. The only issue i have with the TLC is the price tag. We have a dedicated space for movies with a projector and also have a Samsung 75' in the living room. Due to the W.A.F, 75' is the biggest we will ever get in the living room. With that being said, the cost for the Sammy and our Benq projector including the 120' screen cost us just shy of 4700.00. I think TV manufactures are moving in the right direction but the price tags are a bit out there. Now get me closer to 120 inches at more reasonable prices, I'll be looking at my my Benq saying "BYE FELICIA!!"
andrew, you mention displaying art on the tv to reduce the black monstrosity problem. aesthetics are very important to me, is this a viable alternative to a samsung frame? what is the tv image quality vs art function trade off? where is the sweet spot?
The problem with these ginormous TVs is getting them down tight stairwells with a 90-degree turn. I barely got our 85" Samsung down to my man cave in a 5-year-old "villa". I could have taken it out of the box to make it easier, but I'd want to know these 95+" tv's can make it downstairs. Best Buy Geek Sq would have delivered it to my basement but ONLY IN THE BOX. They would not move it OUT OF THE BOX downstairs.

I run a front projection 130" 2.35:1 AT screen. I absolutely guarantee that there is no comparison in immersion factor running a widescreen movie on that setup vs. a 98" TV.
That's great for you... but the problem is most people do not have the space for 130 inches, for that matter even 100 inches. In my previous apartment living room, I regretted even moving from 43 inches to 55 inches. I moved the 55 inch one to my new apartment and it's just right. Even 65 inches might be uncomfortable and cause me to crane my neck to the side. So we need to be practical and stop monopolising our experiences.

You projector enthusiasts can argue all you want, but there are five categories you can never get with a projection and that is deep blacks (without crushing), True HDR impact, deeper colors, price, and last but not least the biggest factor Everyday use. 2024 is the year of big screens.. now if they can only make that 98 in OLED more affordable Man, the big screen game will really be changed. My answer to the front projection problem vs TV is to have both, as long as you have enough space in the living room. I am watching from 170 inches and have 50 inch plasma TV (bought used in 2016 for 200€) and Epson 4k projector (bought used last year for 500€) with manual rolling 150 inch screen (both new for 250€). Projector screen sits above and slighly in front of the TV. TV is better, but big TVs are also very expensive and not yet on the used market. TV also has a theoretical limit to the screen size - your door height 😀 I would add one big advantage to the TVs - they can work well with ambient lighting. Projectors suffer image degradation from ambient lighting, which can be a problem if your eyes are sensitive like mine (watching for more than 3 hours results in eye-strain). Projector is a bonus for me, I watch a movie on it every now and than after it gets dark, but my main display device is the TV.
I have to, respectfully, disagree with you guys about the UST projector remark. I have been using a Xiaomi Mija 1080p,UST, Projection on my wall. I LOVE it! It is not as disturbing on my eyes as any other Led tv, reminds me to my old plazma. I used to have an LGCX Oled but I sold it and never looked back, no regrets whatsoever....

@@H3y45 Yes very happy with my purchase but I will admit that there is some x-factor in Sony processing that makes the image look that extra 10% better than my TCL. However, I am still happier with my TCL because the larger 98 screen size beats the smaller 83 inch Sony OLED for overall movie enjoyment. I wish Sony made a 98inch or larger OLED but they do not. If they did, I would switch back. I will be buying the larger 115 inch TCL mini LED once the price drops.
Why do you say front projection is dying? I think the most common projector screen size is 120 inches, a TV of that size is still a lot more expensive than a decent projector and screen. If they start to make 120-150 inch TVs under $10K then I think it will become a serious threat to projectors.
I agree with you in 2023/early 2024 USTs are relevant. The problem is, his statement will only become more true as the years or possibly even months pass. I have a UST projector and I love it, it was an absolute steal at $2800 all in (projector, 120” screen and shipping). For that price it was a no brainer but there will be a day when the tv being reviewed will be $2000-$3000 and the performance alone will make me switch.
Good morning, great video as always, kind of off subject I saw your instagram post about your visit to the car dealership, interesting to get your observations I manage the parts department of a medium sized Ford store. Although we do have car inventory again and they will deal just to make up for the crap intrest rates, in the back end of the store there are still inexcusable backorders. It will be interesting to see what the UAW strike does to the new car inventory over the first quarter of the new year.
Enjoyed the review and they have come down in price. I'm in the process of fine tuning my JVC NP5 with a 150" screen in a dedicated HT. I agree with this review, 120" or less or if going in a main room; 100%, 98" TCL. Even if I could afford a $25k projector, I would have the same opinion.
Well to be fair, i’m willing to drop 10” for a tv rather than a projector screen and projectkr, although i kind of prefer a projector for the “movie” effect. But getting a good projector is already €3000+ here and a decent 100-110” screens will be around 1k as well. On the other hand, if the tv dies it’s a full replacement and a pain to take to a store, while a projector is much more portable and you still have a pj screen
I have a friend who's into LD and Home Theater like me.. but he went full charge into Projectors... every few months he was getting a better one, endlessly climbing the ladder of cost and reputation.. it was odd. The more he spent... the less he used it. When he 1st got started, everything was just Projector.. TV.. sports.. had that special paint on the wall for it... the replacement parts weren't that big of a deal I guess when they failed.. He doesn't use it much now, the parts are SO damn expensive and the unit builds up heat like a furnace... . He just bought a Sony 95L and doesn't even talk about projectors any more...

You absolutely nailed this review (your brother too). TV's like this are absolutely going to chip away at the projector market especially the ultra short throws that just started to get going themselves.
Great content as usual! Would you consider reviewing an Epson or JVC 4k front projector soon? I've been tempted to switch to a 98 inch TV but the thought of that big black box on the wall plus imagining how difficult the TV can be to move to another house have been holding me back this far. Anyway, keep up the good work!
Excuse me, while we've never reviewed a JVC projector on this channel, I've owned several in my 20 years of reviewing projectors for print magazines. I'm well versed in projection technology and its implementation. I'm not a hater for the sake of hating or clicks.

I have a 158 cinescope acoustically transparent screen with the LS 11000 and it is awesome! My only complaint is needing to kill the lights above the screen. I have dreams of putting something like this TCL on the wall behind a dropdown screen. But... money.
@@tkoms yeah a lot don't know how immersive it is to have a projector and screen combo especially when you have awesome surround and subs. Nothing like a dedicated theater.
As someone who has seen films/movies in control rooms, editing bays, screening rooms and regular theaters I'll say direct view and projection are two different things. If you can do a dark space for projection do it. But you'll want a direct view tv for your bar area. Football in the dark is a little weird. It's like doing vinyl and streaming do both, they have their uses.
I think one thing that can really give the projector side a win is the fact that we can get a decent projector and screen setup that can give a 100"+ display for a few hundred dollars. Granted this is not at the same level as those projectors and TVs talked about here that cost $5000+, but for someone who just wants a secondary system for watching something in a big display this is an option TVs can't give yet. But again as a primary system this wouldn't be ideal. I have an inexpensive projector and screen that I setup on weekend nights for a big movie experience and love it.
In typical large living rooms, the difference between 100 and 120 (and above) inches is enormous. As soon as TVs >= 120 inches reach the price region of today's 100 inch TVs, front projection is history. But not until then. ;) Maybe in 2026?
Andrew, thank you for your insightful content. You are the reason why I have resuscitated my hobby of hifi audio. I am in the process of setting up my home theater, and expecting delivery of the qm8 98" this week, and expect to connect it all through my Cinema 50. I did have a question about the HDMI connection from the receiver to the tv. Since the eARC port is not hdmi 2.1, and I am connecting my xbox, apple tv, and other gaming systems through my receiver, would I then connect the receiver to one of the 2.1 ports in the TV and forego eARC? Or would I need both connections to utilize the TV's in-built streaming apps? I hope you or someone in this community can assist here. Keep up the great work with the channel!
If you want to use the built-in streaming apps and pull their surround sound codecs from the TV to your receiver then you will be limited to 4K/60 if your next gen game consoles are plugged into your receiver, which sucks. But it sounds like you can forgo the eARC in this case by connecting all your sources to your AVR then going Monitor Out of the AVR to the TV's HDMI 1 input and be good!
You guys state how much better a 98” is then a 85” then under state how much bigger a 120”+ screen is than 98”. The 98” TV is 15% bigger than 85” and 120” is 22% bigger than 98”. Then there is the fact that size is not proportional as 98 is 13” bigger than 85 and the 120 is 24” bigger than 98… I own both a 120 front projection in the basement theater and a 85” in the living room. 100” still seems small after the 120. I am looking forward to the 110”-115” TVs to come out.
Hello thanks for your review I am not a UST fanatic but i do have one. but i am thinking of buying the TCL X955. but i saw it (i am in China here it goes but the name of X11G) do you have an idea of how it compares to the Q series? and i have some interrogations about the High brightness of 5000 nits it promises. wouldn't be too bright and wash away the colors and the details? and 3 other points : the blumming and external light reflection which are non existant on UST and the pixel response time which can make fast moving objects kind of blurry. what are your takes on those points? those points are the one making poundering my new buy between a more evolved UST of this TCL x955. Please advise.

The qm7 is mini led has simi gloss, but I’m torn on getting the qm8 mini led I like the glossy screen look cuz the pictures pop more. Should wait for the qm8 on next year Black Friday??? 100 is the new 85 for 2024. I think for most at home use cases for the biggest possible screen this is the way to go. Projectors still have a place in schools, colleges and dedicated large home theaters from what I can see. Especially for screens 120” and above.
Andrew, do you think 2024 with be the year of 98 - 100 inches or will the 110 inch also become mainstream ? More affordable and more models to choose from.
I think as the months and years progress you will see a whole slew of new 90+ inch TVs come to market with them likely topping out at 115 (for right now).
I've always been a projector fan, but I've also always known that it was just temporary until the cost of big screens becomes within reach. I think 7-10k for this is great for a Livingroom if you can pull it off. But for me I'm waiting for the 97" OLEDs to get around $5k and that will go into my light controlled theater room. If that never happens, then I'll be happy with my projector.
Fun review, as always. The TV’s suitability for gaming was a surprise. The segment with Josh was great. I hope he lives in the neighborhood so that he can become a regular on TV reviews. Here's a controversial opinion: I am just not a fan of wall-mounted TVs. I need that wall space for art. I also do not care about projection. So I end up buying free standing TVs of moderate size that look pretty from behind. Bigger screens are more fun. But more room for art is even more fun.

Agreed. It has to be a straight line from the front door to where the tv will be fitted. Going up or down stairs with a turn at the top or bottom is going to be a problem - let alone that it could be too heavy! I am sticking to projector but with an upgrade to 120 inch screen from 110 inch and a new projector although I am waiting to see what happens between JVC and Sony as to how they improve their current line of projectors. On”high mode” the fans are far too loud. Not a problem until you want proper HDR which requires high mode. The solution from various reviewers is to create a “hush box” at significant expense OR move the projector out of the room entirely into a utility space behind the media room if it exists. I have made this decision after following these discussions over the last three years. The “devil” is in the details and it can take TIME to truly find out what the devilish details - really are! For sure, manufacture rep “reviewers” are NOT going to tell you.
So here's the thing with me. I've wanted an OLED for the longest time and once I finally got enough money to buy one I was on the fence because of the qm8. I knew how I felt about OLED's and I might not ever have an OLED if I bought the qm8. So I went ahead and bought the lg c3 and no regrets on that but I would get that qm8 provided I had a place for it and money
The whole reason to get front projection is to get far bigger than 100" screen so i don't see how an 100" tv can kill front projection. Unless they make a foldable 200-300" tv's, projectors gonna stay. This is made for living rooms front projectors are made for dedicated theaters simple. I just don't understand the necessity to compare both.
Believe it or not a few companies, Epson being one of them if memory serves, DO make foldable display walls that unfold to (I think) up to 150". I want to see if we can get one in house in 2024.
Yep, I’m buying it in Jan. Will try to use your link. Only concern is the EARC. Not being HDMI 2.1, will have to put some thought into figuring out what the routing of two consoles, one PC and that need 2.1, a receiver with 3 more sources that don’t need 2.1.

1) As someone who is currently watching this review on a 150" screen, I don't think I could go back to something as small as 100". If you have the space for it, there is just no replacement for size.
2) There was an inaccuracy in your after-review thoughts. - Off axis viewing on a lenticular ALR screen with a UST projector is WAY better than an LED backlit TV. It's not even close. There is close to no degradation off axis. I can put my head on the wall and look across the screen and the colors are still vibrant. I think perhaps you are speakig about a Fresnel ALR screen.
3) Last inaccuracy I want to address- the explanation of lenticular ALR was a bit off. The above ambient light isn't reflected away. It's absorbed by the black substrate. It is the projector light that is bounce-redirected. I recommend purchasing a cheap handheld microscope when installing a lenticular ALR fixed fram screen. You can see the lenticular structure and make sure it is the right way up. (Be careful though since most handheld microscopes have a flipped image.)

I love both. I have a full Dolby atmos dedicated theater with an epson laser projector and a 106in screen. I also have a 83in lg c2 with a two channel system in my LivingRoom on a two channel system with Kef r3 meta and Lyngdorf tado 1120 and high rise rs250. The lg gives me 80% of what my dedicated system does with great sound but when I want to be fully immersed I go into the theater and get that. I could see myself getting one of these as my next living room tv to complement my theater.
I am a projection enthusiast with a dedicated theater and a Stewart 1.3 gain 150" 2.35 aspect ratio screen. I loved this review, thanks Andrew and Kristi. As I said on your previous video, in the living room this is preferable as you don't need to darken the room and go to the trouble I've been to. With 98" TVs below $4k today we can expect 120" at that price sooner than we expect. No question.... if a 150" 2.39 aspect ratio screen was available under $12k. I'd be there. Thanks again!
@13:25 I just need to correct this one thing. Most ambient rejecting screens will have zero effect on viewing angles. The vast majority of ALR screens are Lenticular structure, which do not affect viewing angles. Some ALR screens have a Fresnel type structure that is slightly more effective but does come at the cost of viewing angle. Obviously I’m in camp projector, but I agree with almost every point made in this video. UST projectors are niche products and come with a lot of compromises in most conditions. At night or in very low light, projection is still more lifelike, cinematic, and immersive on my 120” projection setup. For the vast majority of situations and use cases a 100” tv will be preferred by most people. As a projector enthusiast myself, I respect the light hearted trolling in this video. A lot of us have it coming for being such “🤓 um actually” types. Great video as always!

Yea, for projectors, never go by images you see online. I watched numerous online video reviews before deciding to purchase our UST projector. I would've gone with a 100" TV, but the number one reason why we went with the projector - a 100" tv would NOT fit up our stairs into our theater room. That is one of the benefits of a projector with a screen is having everything compactly packed up, you can easily get them into rooms that you may not be able to get extra-large TVs into.
Really enjoyed the insight of your brother as it relates to tackling the gaming aspect of such a larger set. I have a 75" now and will patiently wait for price to come down on these large sets in the future to skip the projector and get a large TV for that large movie theater gaming experience.

Really enjoying the new style of editing, very fun watch. I’ve been big into Samsung’s mini-QLED tech. I have the 85’ in QN90A. But I have been keeping my eye on TCL for sometime that maybe that’s the jump I would make some day. Because the price point for a larger tv and they just keep better and better almost every year, but I would need a bigger wall to fit a bigger tv in the first place. I have owned a LG HU85LA UST projector with a 120” ALR screen, a 77” Sony A80J OLED, and now this 98” TCL QM8. This is hands down the best experience out of the three for movies.

Bigger is better, but there comes a point where it gets big enough, and OLED (and mini LED) image quality at ~100 inches beats any size projector for me. Especially if you’re a gamer. The one advantage for me for projectors is price. I managed to pick up a used short throw 1080p projector for £100, capable of displaying 100 inches. Although I think this TCL screen has got better image quality than the project, it's also $10,000.

Yeah, about this 98 inch TV in November 2023. When I turned it on, I could not believe how beautiful the picture was. I called my friends and family and told them that the TV look like it was halfway to 3-D without glasses.

Great review! I was never a projection guy though I’ve owned a couple. They just don’t fit what I do with a TV. I love that TVs are getting bigger and are still somewhat affordable. I’d love to see you guys review the 98” S5 TCL. I briefly got to see one a couple of weeks ago and I was shocked at how good it looked for the price. I tried to buy one when they had Black Friday pricing but Best Buy had sold out. As they say quantity has a quality of its own. Hook ‘em!
I bought the 75" QM8 for the living room after our old Sony broke. I fell in love with it. I think the blacks looks just as good as the 83" LG C1 I have in the basement on Dolby Vision Bright and turning down the black level a bit. I love it so much I just ordered the 98" beast to replace the C1. 4K and 1080p content look MARVELOUS on this screen. There is some judder on some content and upscaling old TV shows on UA-cam TV can be an adventure. But any modern show looks great and sports are also amazing.
I used to have the Optima P1X Pro UST. I like the 120" screen but didn't like the picture nor the finicky HDMI ports. This will give me the immersion of a big screen with the superior picture and ease of use of a TV. Can't wait! Great review!

100%. My first 100+ inch TV review was back in 2006 (I think) and that Panasonic Plasma was nearing a quarter million dollars after delivery and installation. Not to mention it required a structural engineer to determine if you could even get it installed, nevermind the electrical circuit concerns. The fact that this can be ordered and delivered via Amazon is MINDBLOWING!

Practical question. On this 98" TV...did you two put this TV on the wall yourselves or do you get outside help? What's the difficulty level for the average couple mounting these huge screens on the wall?
My brother and I mounted it on a wall ourselves using THIS mount amzn.to/3RbkaXs which works great! This TV is roughly 100 pounds without the stand, so it's no lightweight, but it can be mounted by two capable people DIY-style.
I help Andrew mount everything (usually) 85 inch and smaller but the 98s are too much for me! These TVs get really heavy!

Well, I’ve recently invested in the 98 inch TCL C735K. I don’t know the USA equivalent model. It’s stood on a 28 inch high media cabinet against the 19 feet short wall of our lounge. I sit in the centre of a 3 seater sofa 15 feet from the tv. My wife and dog occupy a 2 seater sofa along the 21 feet side wall about 11 feet from the tv and notice no, off access degradation. Set to movie maker mode, brightness is phenomenal. Overall it trumps the 65 inch OLED it replaces.

Two things that need to be pointed out with respect to dedicated spaces.
It’s not just the size of the screen they are going for. Dedicated home theaters often (but not always) have acoustically transparent screens with their LCR and often subs behind the screen. This is a big deal and something you can’t do with any TV. As the TV gets larger the center channel or sound bar (ha) have to be placed lower. This means the vocals are coming far too low and will be an issue especially for someone who’s an audiophile.
The second issue that also cannot be ignored is that projectors have the ability to work with other aspect ratios than just a fixed 16x9. The “scoped screen” is part of the immersion that the tv cannot replicate.
But it’s undeniable that you’re going to get an overall better picture with a tv.

If you use a speaker with concentric drivers that’s not a problem!
As you touched upon. Problem in a living room area is the big black square.
I am still debating which route to go for in our living room downstairs. Motorized floortstanding projection screen which I will build into a bench and a UST or to go 100" tv. It would be a very clean install obviously not as good in daylight. But 120" which more or less would not be visible when not used.
A motorized floor rising screen has way more of a wow factor as well as being a cleaner install. Who cares if daytime viewing loses some contrast. No one is critically watching in a fully lit room anyways.
One hurdle with these 98 inch sized TVs is proper feet stands. If you don’t have the option of wall mounting it ( because of a window), then you have to just stand it on a console. The problem comes with the feet being so wide you would have to get an entirely new console. Samsung is the only one with a center stand for their 98inch tv. Amazon also only has VESA stand legs that go up to 90inches and 150lb max weight. These TVs are more like 165lbs. Hopefully we will see some VESA mount leg stands that we can use for these 98-100 inch TVs. Or manufactures at least will have several feet mounting width options (center stand options).

To me, I feel my front projection system with a Laser light source is great. I have no plans on changing. I believe it comes down to personal preference and how much money you want to throw at the solution.
There’s not a chance this would take the place of my 150 inch screen. It’s super easy to take apart a projector setup. Not so much with a 98 inch tv. Plus it’s only 98 inch, there no replacement for cubic inches in TVs or car engines! 😊
Not to mention the ease of upgrade and resale of PJs. Good luck re-selling a 100" TV at any price.
Wow 150. I have seen thoes HIsense 8K resolution n projection TVs in Asian site. N they are HUGE. Wish they sell it here. How is d 150” like? Are they dim? One thing i always worry is the dim n etc.

They are very high price tag they dont even sell it here in North America. I saw this thing called 52UX something something like that…huge TVs . Now u mentioned those Large TVs i wonder what thoes 150 look like. Are they dim? That was my only concern my best friend had a laser tv a few yrs back it looked bit dim n washed out on d wall. N cant have window open. So i guess if it’s in Theatre room it’s great choice….like u said?
I would wager that people looking to drop 4-6K on a big TV and people looking to get a big, cheap-ish image for 1K or less are completely different markets. Big TVs could replace top-of-the-line projector setups in many homes, but won't affect the budget projector market.
I built my own projector screen back in 2012. I had a 720p projector and the screen was 8ftx5ft or about 105in. My first screen and it worked great at night or with blackout curtains. Now that quality tvs are coming out that dive and fairly affordable, I may be inclined to check them out. A 55in tv is VERY small when you downscale but going big on movie night or game day is impressive!
Love the review as always! Your brother not only looks just like you, but you guys have almost identical laughs. The only issue i have with the TLC is the price tag. We have a dedicated space for movies with a projector and also have a Samsung 75' in the living room. Due to the W.A.F, 75' is the biggest we will ever get in the living room. With that being said, the cost for the Sammy and our Benq projector including the 120' screen cost us just shy of 4700.00. I think TV manufactures are moving in the right direction but the price tags are a bit out there. Now get me closer to 120 inches at more reasonable prices, I'll be looking at my my Benq saying "BYE FELICIA!!"

The problem with these ginormous TVs is getting them down tight stairwells with a 90-degree turn. I barely got our 85" Samsung down to my man cave in a 5-year-old "villa". I could have taken it out of the box to make it easier, but I'd want to know these 95+" tv's can make it downstairs. Best Buy Geek Sq would have delivered it to my basement but ONLY IN THE BOX. They would not move it OUT OF THE BOX downstairs.

I run a front projection 130" 2.35:1 AT screen. I absolutely guarantee that there is no comparison in immersion factor running a widescreen movie on that setup vs. a 98" TV.
That's great for you... but the problem is most people do not have the space for 130 inches, for that matter even 100 inches. In my previous apartment living room, I regretted even moving from 43 inches to 55 inches. I moved the 55 inch one to my new apartment and it's just right. Even 65 inches might be uncomfortable and cause me to crane my neck to the side. So we need to be practical and stop monopolising our experiences.

My answer to the front projection problem vs TV is to have both, as long as you have enough space in the living room. I am watching from 170 inches and have 50 inch plasma TV (bought used in 2016 for 200€) and Epson 4k projector (bought used last year for 500€) with manual rolling 150 inch screen (both new for 250€). Projector screen sits above and slighly in front of the TV.
TV is better, but big TVs are also very expensive and not yet on the used market. TV also has a theoretical limit to the screen size - your door height 😀
I would add one big advantage to the TVs - they can work well with ambient lighting. Projectors suffer image degradation from ambient lighting, which can be a problem if your eyes are sensitive like mine (watching for more than 3 hours results in eye-strain). Projector is a bonus for me, I watch a movie on it every now and than after it gets dark, but my main display device is the TV.
I have to, respectfully, disagree with you guys about the UST projector remark. I have been using a Xiaomi Mija 1080p,UST, Projection on my wall. I LOVE it! It is not as disturbing on my eyes as any other Led tv, reminds me to my old plazma. I used to have an LGCX Oled but I sold it and never looked back, no regrets whatsoever....
I'd really love to see a review with an AWOL Vision UST, ideally with a 3500 Pro and their ALR floor rising screen. Any plans in the works?

@@H3y45 Yes very happy with my purchase but I will admit that there is some x-factor in Sony processing that makes the image look that extra 10% better than my TCL. However, I am still happier with my TCL because the larger 98 screen size beats the smaller 83 inch Sony OLED for overall movie enjoyment. I wish Sony made a 98inch or larger OLED but they do not. If they did, I would switch back. I will be buying the larger 115 inch TCL mini LED once the price drops.
Why do you say front projection is dying? I think the most common projector screen size is 120 inches, a TV of that size is still a lot more expensive than a decent projector and screen. If they start to make 120-150 inch TVs under $10K then I think it will become a serious threat to projectors.
I agree with you in 2023/early 2024 USTs are relevant. The problem is, his statement will only become more true as the years or possibly even months pass. I have a UST projector and I love it, it was an absolute steal at $2800 all in (projector, 120” screen and shipping). For that price it was a no brainer but there will be a day when the tv being reviewed will be $2000-$3000 and the performance alone will make me switch.
Good morning, great video as always, kind of off subject I saw your instagram post about your visit to the car dealership, interesting to get your observations I manage the parts department of a medium sized Ford store. Although we do have car inventory again and they will deal just to make up for the crap intrest rates, in the back end of the store there are still inexcusable backorders. It will be interesting to see what the UAW strike does to the new car inventory over the first quarter of the new year.
Enjoyed the review and they have come down in price. I'm in the process of fine tuning my JVC NP5 with a 150" screen in a dedicated HT. I agree with this review, 120" or less or if going in a main room; 100%, 98" TCL. Even if I could afford a $25k projector, I would have the same opinion.
Well to be fair, i’m willing to drop 10” for a tv rather than a projector screen and projectkr, although i kind of prefer a projector for the “movie” effect.
But getting a good projector is already €3000+ here and a decent 100-110” screens will be around 1k as well.
On the other hand, if the tv dies it’s a full replacement and a pain to take to a store, while a projector is much more portable and you still have a pj screen
I have a friend who's into LD and Home Theater like me.. but he went full charge into Projectors... every few months he was getting a better one, endlessly climbing the ladder of cost and reputation.. it was odd. The more he spent... the less he used it. When he 1st got started, everything was just Projector.. TV.. sports.. had that special paint on the wall for it... the replacement parts weren't that big of a deal I guess when they failed.. He doesn't use it much now, the parts are SO damn expensive and the unit builds up heat like a furnace...

I've been tempted to switch to a 98 inch TV but the thought of that big black box on the wall plus imagining how difficult the TV can be to move to another house have been holding me back this far. They've never reviewed a JVC and don't have a dedicated space to demonstrate what it's capable of.
Excuse me, while we've never reviewed a JVC projector on this channel, I've owned several in my 20 years of reviewing projectors for print magazines. I'm well versed in projection technology and its implementation. I'm not a hater for the sake of hating or clicks.

Thanks! The off-axis isn't unwatchable for what it's worth, it's just not as good as how this TV looks more or less head-on. Big props to Josh for his help on this one!
I have a 140 inch acoustic transparent 16:9 screen with the LS12000 and it is an awesome experience.
I have a 158 cinescope acoustically transparent screen with the LS 11000 and it is awesome! My only complaint is needing to kill the lights above the screen. I have dreams of putting something like this TCL on the wall behind a dropdown screen. But... money.
@@tkoms yeah a lot don't know how immersive it is to have a projector and screen combo especially when you have awesome surround and subs. Nothing like a dedicated theater.
As someone who has seen films/movies in control rooms, editing bays, screening rooms and regular theaters I'll say direct view and projection are two different things. If you can do a dark space for projection do it. But you'll want a direct view tv for your bar area. Football in the dark is a little weird. It's like doing vinyl and streaming do both, they have their uses.
I think one thing that can really give the projector side a win is the fact that we can get a decent projector and screen setup that can give a 100"+ display for a few hundred dollars. Granted this is not at the same level as those projectors and TVs talked about here that cost $5000+, but for someone who just wants a secondary system for watching something in a big display this is an option TVs can't give yet. But again as a primary system this wouldn't be ideal. I have an inexpensive projector and screen that I setup on weekend nights for a big movie experience and love it.
In typical large living rooms, the difference between 100 and 120 (and above) inches is enormous. As soon as TVs >= 120 inches reach the price region of today's 100 inch TVs, front projection is history. But not until then. ;) Maybe in 2026?
try to carry 120" TV on the stairs... 😄

As much as I love a good quality TV I prefer the more cinematic picture quality of a projector for blockbuster movie watching.

Andrew, thank you for your insightful content. You are the reason why I have resuscitated my hobby of hifi audio. I am in the process of setting up my home theater, and expecting delivery of the qm8 98" this week, and expect to connect it all through my Cinema 50. I did have a question about the HDMI connection from the receiver to the tv. Since the eARC port is not hdmi 2.1, and I am connecting my xbox, apple tv, and other gaming systems through my receiver, would I then connect the receiver to one of the 2.1 ports in the TV and forego eARC? Or would I need both connections to utilize the TV's in-built streaming apps? I hope you or someone in this community can assist here. Keep up the great work with the channel!
If you want to use the built-in streaming apps and pull their surround sound codecs from the TV to your receiver then you will be limited to 4K/60 if your next gen game consoles are plugged into your receiver, which sucks. But it sounds like you can forgo the eARC in this case by connecting all your sources to your AVR then going Monitor Out of the AVR to the TV's HDMI 1 input and be good!
I have been waiting on the 100 inch OLEDs.
You guys state how much better a 98” is then a 85” then under state how much bigger a 120”+ screen is than 98”. The 98” TV is 15% bigger than 85” and 120” is 22% bigger than 98”. Then there is the fact that size is not proportional as 98 is 13” bigger than 85 and the 120 is 24” bigger than 98…
I own both a 120 front projection in the basement theater and a 85” in the living room. 100” still seems small after the 120. I am looking forward to the 110”-115” TVs to come out.
Actually in area terms 120" is 44% bigger, and when I zoomed my front projector down to compare 100" to 120" it totally feels it...
Hello thanks for your review I am not a UST fanatic but i do have one. but i am thinking of buying the TCL X955. but i saw it (i am in China here it goes but the name of X11G) do you have an idea of how it compares to the Q series? and i have some interrogations about the High brightness of 5000 nits it promises. wouldn't be too bright and wash away the colors and the details? and 3 other points : the blumming and external light reflection which are non existant on UST and the pixel response time which can make fast moving objects kind of blurry. what are your takes on those points?
those points are the one making poundering my new buy between a more evolved UST of this TCL x955.

Which TV models do you prefer that work best with the AVR’s you test. Some don’t work good with eArc or HDMI, Dolby vision and Surround sound.

The qm7 is mini led has simi gloss, but I’m torn on getting the qm8 mini led I like the glossy screen look cuz the pictures pop more. Should wait for the qm8 on next year Black Friday??? I know it’s a long time but it’s worth the wait if price drops close to $2000 I’m talking about the 98” qm8 & 98”qm7 ..right now I’m getting the 98” qm7 being shipped I got for $2000 plus free installation from BB.. was gonna give it up and keep my 98” tcl S5 until next year.. Andrew, curious how far away your seating is from your screen. I wonder what size room makes a 98” bigger than ideal.
100 is the new 85 for 2024. I think for most at home use cases for the biggest possible screen this is the way to go. Projectors still have a place in schools, colleges and dedicated large home theaters from what I can see. Especially for screens 120” and above.
Andrew, do you think 2024 with be the year of 98 - 100 inches or will the 110 inch also become mainstream ? More affordable and more models to choose from.
I think as the months and years progress you will see a whole slew of new 90+ inch TVs come to market with them likely topping out at 115 (for right now).
I've always been a projector fan, but I've also always known that it was just temporary until the cost of big screens becomes within reach. I think 7-10k for this is great for a Livingroom if you can pull it off. But for me I'm waiting for the 97" OLEDs to get around $5k and that will go into my light controlled theater room. If that never happens, then I'll be happy with my projector.
would the 100" Hisense U8H be a better TV?
Fun review, as always. The TV’s suitability for gaming was a surprise. The segment with Josh was great. I hope he lives in the neighborhood so that he can become a regular on TV reviews. Here's a controversial opinion: I am just not a fan of wall-mounted TVs. I need that wall space for art. I also do not care about projection. So I end up buying free standing TVs of moderate size that look pretty from behind. Bigger screens are more fun. But more room for art is even more fun.
Nothing controversial about wanting works of art hanging in your home. I support that 100%

I guess it was more a general comment about wall mounted being the norm nowadays. Free standing TVs seem to be an odd choice for most.
Good to have choices. For sports a big tv for sure but when it's time to watch Tarantino's The Hateful Eight i lower the StudioTek for cinematic ecstasy. 🥰🥰

The off viewing axis kills it for me for I can’t wait for a tv of this size to get that right and be “affordable”. Once the Sony 98 drops below $5k, they will have my full attention. Great review as usual. Thank you!

Agreed. It has to be a straight line from the front door to where the tv will be fitted. Going up or down stairs with a turn at the top or bottom is going to be a problem - let alone that it could be too heavy! I am sticking to projector but with an upgrade to 120 inch screen from 110 inch and a new projector although I am waiting to see what happens between JVC and Sony as to how they improve their current line of projectors. On”high mode” the fans are far too loud. Not a problem until you want proper HDR which requires high mode. The solution from various reviewers is to create a “hush box” at significant expense OR move the projector out of the room entirely into a utility space behind the media room if it exists. I have made this decision after following these discussions over the last three years. The “devil” is in the details and it can take TIME to truly find out what the devilish details - really are! For sure, manufacture rep “reviewers” are NOT going to tell you.
So here's the thing with me. I've wanted an OLED for the longest time and once I finally got enough money to buy one I was on the fence because of the qm8. I knew how I felt about OLED's and I might not ever have an OLED if I bought the qm8. So I went ahead and bought the lg c3 and no regrets on that but I would get that qm8 provided I had a place for it and money
The whole reason to get front projection is to get far bigger than 100" screen so i don't see how an 100" tv can kill front projection. Unless they make a foldable 200-300" tv's, projectors gonna stay. This is made for living rooms front projectors are made for dedicated theaters simple. I just don't understand the necessity to compare both.
Believe it or not a few companies, Epson being one of them if memory serves, DO make foldable display walls that unfold to (I think) up to 150". I want to see if we can get one in house in 2024.

Only concern is the EARC. Not being HDMI 2.1, will have to put some thought into figuring out what the routing of two consoles, one PC and that need 2.1, a receiver with 3 more sources that don’t need 2.1.
