We know that cars like the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT deliver plenty of driving thrills. But can a practical five-door electric family car deliver an entertaining drive? With the market expanding all the time, car makers are starting to add sportier models to their line-ups. Cars like the new Škoda Enyaq vRS, the first battery-powered car to wear the Czech brand’s famous sporting badge. Then there’s Kia, which has pitched the EV6 a sportier, more focussed alternative to the mechanically identical Hyundai IONIQ 5. And if you want a car with real sporting heritage, BMW’s i4 ticks all the right boxes.
But which is the best all-rounder? Join Nicki and Tom as they swaps their tape measures for driving boots as they drive all three back-to-back for the first time. Is the Škoda the surprise package, or does Kia or BMW now offer the best driving experience? Which would you choose? As always, we’d love to read your opinions in the comments below.

After 9‘000 km since May with 54 years of ‚premium‘ cars driver experience also on tracks, the EV6 AWD is definitely the winner. Extremely low TCO (former ICE costed me a fortune in servicing) and best mix in performance and efficiency as well as not the usual boring design. The drivetrain is excellent and top class found only in much more expensive cars. Responsible was one of the very best in automotive Albert Biermann. He headed BMW M-Sport for 30 years and made some of the best ICE ever on the market. With the mechanical adaptive shock absorbers from ZF Sachs we are in good relation only with Maserati and some Mercedes AMG. On the Anneau du Rhin track in summer I had no problem with cars like Alfa-Romeo Stelvio Quadrofoglio Verde if you know what that is (it’s a V6 from Ferrari with 510 HP)! The Kia ‚only‘ has measured 333 HP but 608 Nm. When you compare say also that only the Kia has a frunk. When looking at technology ask Sandy Muro about how BMW not solved the problem, so it’s not worth paying for some oldfashioned interior and a design to discuss. Better is Skoda at least best of all Volkswagen products still heaving a few software and other problems. So also there not really worth the price, always compared with ‚full house‘ like my Kia. Sorry to say that as an old BMW enthusiast owning them also! It’s just a shame for me how they kill the brand after a rather interesting EV startup in the past. Same for many others by the way and understandable why they fear Nio, BYD, Xpeng, Polestar, Aiways and of course Hyundai group with so much choice for every car design freak; Genesis, Ioniq and Kia.😎👌🥰

A great comparison video, guys - thanks.
Given the choice of these 3, to me it's an absolute no-brainer, easy win for the BMW i4 - if, for nothing else than that it's NOT yet another flippin' resource-wasteful electric SUV...!!
    That aside...
Might I suggest a minor 'tweak' to your videos, please?
I always find these types of comparisons way more informative when BOTH drivers are in the car together - swapping between driver or passenger car-to-car.
That way, as viewers, we get to hear more comparison conversation, both as how a car feels as a driver AND as a passenger.
    What do you think...?
Maybe try that on the next head-to-head...? 🤞

Really great comparison, enjoyed this a lot. I think the i4 is one of the better BMWs of the fugly generation. I like the cabin and in this colour scheme the cartoon elements (ie grill) dominate less. Money no object, I would take the BMW. vRS seems to be a styling exercise for the Enyaq so I'd pass on that. Some slightly dodgy areas of interior styling aside, the EV6 wins for me. Looks great, goes well and is loaded with tech. Also decent efficiency, range and charging speed. Just what you want from an EV. Either that or I would take the Ioniq 6 - that looks wild !

Yesterday I took delivery of EV6 AWD GT-Line in blue. Coming from an audi a5 sportback and my daughter born last year I chose ev6 over i4 due to practicality. It drives very well for a family crossover IMHO. Having said that, my parents have had an I-pace for 3 years and it is a slighty better driver's car with a wonderful steering and air suspension. I believe that is the best driving ev crossover and might give i4 a run for its money.

I ordered the BMW last summer and still don’t know when I would have received it. The Kia is in my garage. IMO any EV costing more than £43k (the current price of a Tesla model 3) had better be absolutely outstanding or it loses out. Tesla are ahead with their software, especially OTA updates, and their supercharger network beats all the alternatives. I chose the BMW i4 M Sport over the EV6 because of build quality and handling. I'm very happy with it. Obviously slower DC charging compared to the EV6. And the 0 to 60 is conservative foe the i4.

    • @davzer3773
      @davzer3773 Рік тому +1

The stated figure by bmw is always very conservative so that if a car is a little off the pace they can’t be taken to court over misleading customers. The actual 0-60 time is 4.7secs which was achieved by a couple of American car mags, they held it on the foot brake whilst flooring the throttle and off it shoots on the release of the brake. Not something I’d want to try with my own car!

I bought the Skoda VRS, after 20 years of driving BMW's.
    had a spec list though:
SUV, good looking, 4wd, decent power and performance, tow bar, good size boot and comfortable. Essentially a daily driver with a little extra.
The Skoda ticked all the boxes, the BMW is probably a better sporty drive, but BMW's of late a hideous looking.
I spend a good while back in spring 2022 studying the marked before choosing the Enyaq VRS.
I do not regret that choice after 2,5 months of ownership, it has a few minor issues, mostly software related, but Skoda/VW are working on improving those things.
It is what it is, you can't have it all. Get what you need most of the time and get a second fun car.

    The infotainment just works and
it updates all the time. I wonder how long legacy automakers will support their vehicles..
It's not perfect, the seats are rubbish for a sporty driver and the warranty could be longer. But it's so easy to live with.

The BMW will appeal to the sales reps out there, the EV6 is the one to choose from these three IMHO. But right now whilst i'm not a fan of its looks, you'd have to say the Tesla Model Y is the best EV to go for right now, esp Long Range form. 4.x 0-60, great load space and good tech.

I wouldn't touch the model Y. I just don't want my money to go, in any part to complete a**hole such as Elon Musk.
Apart from that, I simply detest the interior of Teslas. They may be making a virtue out of a necessity, but I hate the big screen and no buttons. And apart from the screen; white or black interior? What's that about? White on something with a tailgate and huge cargo space just doesn't make sense, and the black just looks awful. I've never liked black interiors, and none of the Teslas convince. And the screen costs 3500 to replace, and you can't drive the vehicle without it. With the sorts of loads I occasionally carry, that's absolutely a deal breaker. There again, I've so far yet to meet a Tesla driver who even got up to BMW/Audi/Merc levels of contemptuous road behaviour, so I don't think the Tesla fraternity would want somebody who knows how to be polite.

All Škoda Enyaq iV variants are good cars depends on what you are looking for. Škoda made a good job here with the more sporty vRS.
But I personally prefer Enyaq iV 80 Sportline. It looks great, it is practical and it may not be the fastest car out there. Pretty slow acceleration actually. But one of the most comfy cars out there with great sport seats!

Well Nicki being an ex BMW driver I have to site with Tom as what has been shown is hands down better than BMW could ever imagine, cheaper, more efficient and with faster charging as Tom said more time spent on the roads which drivers like me used to love. Now what I need is to get my eyes operated on and my license back and hopefully a decent day when my Bank Manager is in a good mood, so he can lend me what it costs !!

I think that the BMW claim of 365 miles from an 80.7 kWh battery is hard to believe. Simple maths of 365/80.7 = 4.52 miles per kWh. Really? People are lucky to get 3.5 from this size of car and much less in Winter. And that's 3.5 x 80.7 = 280 miles. Still has a good range of course but 85 miles less than people expect. And a new buyer might select on the total range and not be aware of these maths calcs. Winter range can often be 2.9 miles per kWh = 234 miles for cars of this size as well. And, of course, a dealer won't want to discuss this kind of real-world range until the order has been signed. And that's only if they're aware of it themselves.

I agree however the same argument also applies to the Kia because it all relative to how & where you drive. I've seen road tests on YT that produced 525 km (326 miles) on the i4 rwd on 19 inch tires in Europe, i suspect due to driving mostly on windy 'small roads'. Same car in USA on the interstate where one can easily average 75 to 80 mph (driving normally), the range will be around 280 to 290 on the rwd variant. Either way, its still a lot of miles.

It’s a definite win for the EV6. The comparison should have used the higher spec EV6 which would have made it more even, making the EV6 even more awesome for the price. The Enyaq is just a bland machine, but a lot of people like bland, just look at how many people buy Toyotas. The BMW is a lovely machine, but waaaaaay too expensive in my country and most are driven by twats.

But unfortunately there's still the odd pompous badge snob about like the incredibly unbearable bloke on here quoting it's very expensive for a skoda. What car and other respected channels give completely unbiased reviews regardless of badge.

I bet Vauxhall were doing cartwheels because they will sell even more Corsa. Same over at Toyota with the Yaris. Strange times indeed

The one key point you've missed is whether any of the three manufacturers are able to make a profit from their EVs. No profit, no future. As ICE sales decline, which they are about to do rapidly, these three are about to head for bankruptcy. This is a much more important metric than range, or driving fun or luggage space. That time, maybe no more than 3 or 4 years away.

When did a BMW i4 become the best electric car out there, when the platform isn't EV specific, but just an existing car shoehorned with batteries.
When did the cheapest KIA (of all brands) become a viable 'family' car with a starting price of £50,000 +
It's all a load of bollox...

Skoda shape looks better than the others apart from black fake vent trims which will get chipped. Skoda is a big car and less aerodynamic so not as efficient.
