I agree with Jouelzy so much on this. I was so shocked to discover that AAs are tired/ashamed of slave narratives. In the Caribbean, the way history is taught, we see enslaved people as the heroes of the story.
I feel like pieces like this are necessary, but wouldn't be so hard and triggering to watch if we weren't experiencing remnants of it at present day. It really puts us there and its like hey, we are already sensitive enough living out our day to day lives on alert from 'whiteness.' In fact, we exist in a system that's currently attempting to REPEAT the same experiences and harsh history that is being illustrated. That is hella disturbing.
So true
This is exactly where I’m at. Like, I understand that the enslavement of Africans and their descents is apart of our legacy, and I’m proud to have descended from it, but I’m weary of fictionalized dramas of our lives, both past and present, as we are literally still experiencing it. Part of entertainment is supposed to be escapism and give you some sort of reprieve from daily life and it feels like even we don’t even get that.
Thank you for the review. I put off watching this series because I was traumatized by Them. However, because of your review, I'm going to watch. You talked about the sound and the use of color which means the creators really took into consideration how the viewer was going to experience the series. Thanks again.
Your commentary on the Black American experience is really important.
Off subject but i had to say…I just started reading Heavy. It’s really good. You always have good book recommendations.
He has a book called long division great as well
@@biancapetty9624 I’ll look it up. Appreciate you!
After the first episode I was like hard pass. Even my parents said the same thing. So after ep1 we all got up and let the TV run into ep2. My mom started watching it while folding clothes and then yelled for me to come back. After that we were hooked.
I had the same experience with episode 1 as you and your mom. Based on your comment, I'll try it again. Hope I have a similar experience as y'all.
Episode 2 got me hooked too
I wanna gather the strength to watch this b/c Berry Jenkins is my favorite director
Excellent Jouelzy...... I so enjoyed your thoughts on this.
No lie, I was very hesitant to watch the series...thinking to my self Great🙄 another slave movie. When I did start watching I was hooked. The way the whole thing was done is a Work of Art! It was like a poem from the American past to black folks of today. Thank you for your review! It's important for our people to speak truth on movies that represent us, and you done it well 👍
I'm not upset at us being apart of "slave narratives" because that ancestry lasted approximately 20-30 generations respectively. I don't want to act like that part of me never happened. It's unfair to them for us to act like their experiences never happened. Their love, their language, their smiles, their struggle, their hurt, their families...EXISTED. I'm tired of the narratives of European monarchies. It's boring and leaves too much out. But I digress...😌
Thank you!!! It is a part of our history - not told enough through our own voice
I enjoyed the series too! It really made think about the emotional tolls that slavery had and how there were so many lifetimes lived that never saw freedom. A lot of the films we have end happily, but that wasn't always the case.
Nooooo I BINGED WATCHED IT...I'M SORRY!!! lmao But this makes me want to watch it again. I tend to stay away from just any slave narrative movie or show, HOWEVER this was good.
SN: I might have to join the Book Club..this single mama needs an outlet from paying a mortgage and bills, autism therapies, and my horrid corporate job.
I'm so happy to see you review the Underground Railroad series! This show addressed the dynamics of slavery and reconstruction in a thoughtful and intelligent way. I loved the visuals of this series as well.
You articulate your thoughts in ways that I don't know how. You are taking the words right out of my mouth when it comes to this series. The only thing I didn't like about the series was the historical inaccuracies throughout the story. I have ran into so many people in life that thought there was an actual underground railroad as portrayed in this story. I thought a lot of good lessons were taught throughout the series but the historical inaccuracies take away from the story.
Barry Jenkins has a powerful way of centering black folks. I'm going to catch up on his filmography
With the Underground Railroad, Barry Jenkins really showed himself to be a master at portraying the "Black Quotidian"; regardless if it be from the modern era or a historical one like in this series. For me, he's one of a handful of Black writers/producers/directors that I trust with telling our stories. Excellent analysis as always.
Thanks for the review! I want to watch this miniseries, but I don't want to reinstate my Prime subscription. Gotta convince a family member or friend to let me use their account lmao
Thuso Mbedu🇿🇦 brought us 🇿🇦women and our pain to this beautiful artwork!
I felt that Mingo was motivated by fear. Everything he said and the plans he hatched for Valentine Farm were to ensure it's survival. His desperation was born from what they all knew - their white neighbours would eventually turn on them.
Jouelzy thanks for bringing this series to my attention 👌🏾
When you said we have to give grace to our ancestors because their way of creating had to modified due to their circumstances my heart broke for them and for us because our failure to give them grace results in us being unable to give ourselves grace to just be and how sometimes just ‘being’ is revolutionary
I feel as though our strength,
Our trauma is major commerce. I feel hyper aware of the eroticism & psychosocial macro-agressions on film & monetary value attached to the most debased acts. Its like a necessary evil to be able to see such films although we have endured through supernatural tragedies, jarring views of our lived experiences.
Aye o, that's my take. Thank you for your views, Jouelzy
It feels like you're talking to me personally about the series.
You’re absolutely right about episode 1! The first time I tried to watch I could barely get through it. I had to walk away for a few weeks but I just finished the series today and it was remarkable. Easily the best series I’ve seen this summer, if not this year. Loved your review!
I was hesitant to watch this because I didn't like the Underground Railroad- found the novel to be torture p*r* and harmful in its portrayal of black women, so I'm glad to see that Barry Jenkin's adaptation does something different. Thank you for making this video.
So appreciate this analysis. I am really weary of the no-trauma discourse and people dismissing any content about slavery and racial struggle as if it shouldn't exist...but at the same time I do understand how people feel about watching this content especially now, it can be so painful because its reality-based. I do better with reading because I can pace it, and I actually liked the novel Underground Railroad while also seeing your points about it. Maybe because I read the book it was hard to enjoy the show because in all of those beautiful, quiet, tender, gorgeously filmed moments of Black people just being, I knew what was eventually coming. So although I thought the show was well done, I could not watch it all the way through. I appreciate some of the episodes I did see and will go back to do the whole series one day. Your suggestion about moving through it slowly and taking reprieve is a good one. My husband was bingeing it and I could not be in that world every night for weeks.
So Mingo is a Charles Barkley character?
It’s almost giving brown skin! A bronzed summer sis 🔥
Are you a Smollett? You look a lot like Jurnee. 😀 And, I for one, was *HIGHLY* upset when *Underground* on WGN was cancelled. *That* show was *EXCELLENT* ! It is *sorely* missed.
I love the score of this series. Barry and Nicholas collaborate a lot and you can tell by the sound that it’s a Nicholas Brittel score.
Okaaay audio! Idk... just something about your audio today!
Them was literally black violence porn. Das it. There was no story
*_“The Underground Railroad” has been shut out of the 2021 Emmy Awards. After receiving seven nominations, including recognition for showrunner Barry Jenkins (Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series) and the series overall (Outstanding Limited Series), the Amazon Prime Video original lost all seven categories over two weekends of Emmy presentations."_*
I just finished it and omg, such brilliant work! From the acting to the scenery to the subtle nuances in the characters, it was all so wonderfully done. I also really enjoyed the way he depicited the ever-looming danger that whiteness imposes
You did so good on this :)
Great review, but I couldn’t make it past the first episode 😐😕
Thank you will watch the series. 💕Definitely won’t be reading the book.
I'm never tired of movies/shows about the antebellum period but this series got boring to me after episode 3. Imma try to go back and watch it after listening to you. But I do wish the period from reconstruction to the new deal was covered more in film and television.
Not embarrassed anymore about our history but I just cannot tolerate the brutality and torture that these stories always depict.
I am glad that the show has a new perspective but I still cannot watch it but I am glad that others can and enjoyed it
You really do get prettier every video like your features are already pretty asf
I thoroughly enjoyed this show
you look incredible omg, i love the blond on you❤️
great review but not watching show
I’m not ashamed of the slave narrative, but we have a lot of glorious stories that are just now being told. We want a lot of representation. Also, it’s hard to finish a film feeling deep pain and anger, with no where for it to go, because that time has passed. A book let’s you pace yourself. Life is challenging and if it’s not fun/exciting/uplifting I’m not going to ruminate on it too much.
I watched 5 episodes and couldn't take it. I want to though.
The Tennessee episodes are the slowest and that's right where you stopped. 7, 8 & 9 are the best episodes of the series. But there's no happy ending.
I watched the series and it disappointed me. Visually and cinematically, it was beautifully shot, but the story was traumatizing.
I have eczema in my ear canals as well. Earbuds make it worse. I use alcohol on a qtip to dry up excess moisture in canal. Then I use hydrocortisone ointment (not cream) on a qtip to coat the canal. Helps keep me from itching like crazy and getting repeated infections.
Thanks for sharing this review. I actually wanted to watch this series. I couldn’t get past the first episode. So I will attempt to try again. I have a habit of watching shows with full interest and then losing interest, but I will try to watch it in full.
I think for me, slavery dramas like you mention, sometimes are like trauma porn and I can’t handle that. And as a mother, it’s hard for me to watch these shows and then pass black pride into my son. I’m really struggling with that. We’ve endured so as a people and we’re still here, but we’re so far from where we ought to be and it’s so evident. Anyways I will try to watch based on your recommendation.
I haven't watched the show but I love the book and wondering if people who have read the book like the show
Hello joulez I have a private question to ask you what's your email address.
Beautiful review. I admit I wasn't going to give this series a chance at all. Your review makes me want to check it out and give it a try.

Thank You 🙏
I enjoyed it too 👍🏾
You're not tired of the slave narrative for black people yet? So this is the best slave series yet, great, but hopefully that means we're done with this type of content. We have enough to last us for lifetimes now. Barry Jenkins is an amazing director, and his talent is wasted on this
These stories deserve to be told. Without the past our present would not exist
It is important to not forget. This series is so important for EVERYONE and EVERY BLACK PERSON to see. It's imperative that we see this series.
Hey y’all 💕
Just watched it. It could have been and should have been only six or seven episodes, max. And sadly after all those hours, I still don't exactly know who Cora was. ☹️
Maybe one day I'll watch it. I'm just so tired of seeing us as slaves.
