  • This video is intended to be a DIY guide to facelifting the steering wheel in a 2000 E39 M5 to the 2001, 2002, and 2003 wheel. Cars after mid 1999 or so have a dual stage airbag, so this setup should be all plug and play with the correct parts. Here are the part numbers that I used:
    E39 M5/E46 M3 M stitching steering wheel: 32342282020
    This part comes with all steering wheel and trim necessary for full functionality and installation: www.ecstuning.c...

    Hello, I just put a facelift wheel on my 2000/04 E39 M5. Thank you for the instructions.
    Two things that I noticed on my car, the torx bit was #27 and the torque for the bolt should be 46 ft-lb (63 Nm). If the steering wheel uses a nut the torque should be 59 ft-lb (80 Nm).
    The wheel I got is dated 2006 and must be from a M3 E46, OEM 32342282020.
    Than you for a superb channel!!!
    Cheers

    Man this car looks gorgeous. If there is one thing I absolutely hate about drivers is when they own a nice car, especially a rare one (M3, M5, R32, AMG, etc.) and its dirty inside with trash, crumbs etc. Whenever I see a dirty interior in a rare care i pray it gets stolen. But anyways i'm ranting. Nice video, awesome car.

    the reason they don't interchange is the wheel is actually different where the clockspring comes through (hole is in different place) not just the airbag, also the underside of the wheel boss area is different

    There is a recall in Germany at the moment due to the faulty Takata airbag. You have the yellow sticker on it, so it is the Takata and should be replaced. If you have white sticker it is ok and doesn't need to be replaced.

      ***** Hey Ryan, Hey Colton I've got a question ref swapping the steering wheel over. I've got a 2001 530i with the standard original 4 spoke dual stage steering wheel.I want to change to a sport steering wheel (either the one you've just put in your M5 or the one you've replaced, just haven't made my mind up yet) Question is, is it a straight swap or do I have to do any messing around with the slip ring? or is it old steering wheel off, new one on........Cheers, P

    • @e39source87
      @e39source87 10 років тому

      Paolo Panetta From what I know, it should be a straight swap with whatever wheel you choose. Since you're starting with a non-sport wheel though, I haven't done a whole lot of research on this exact change. I would definitely expect the same process that I just did though.

    The E39 M5 is a truly great car. I owned one for a time. Informative vids about how to improve the car. I believe that the last few (03 & 53 in UK) had service intervals in 25 mile increments not the green squares and bluetooth phone as an option. Is that something you might do?

      The facelift wheel will fit in your 1997 E39, I am fairly certain. The airbag will NOT work, since the pre 1999s are a single stage instead of a dual stage airbag. I would definitely not recommend sacrificing your safety and perhaps your life for a nicer looking steering wheel.

    Facelift is not the correct description for this steering wheel, to be precisely. Facelift models had the same wheel which you had before. The new one came later (2001 if I remember correctly). Their right names are M-Tech I and M-Tech II. The new one is BMW's best handling steering wheel till this day!

    • @BobbyOHearn
      @BobbyOHearn 7 років тому

      Facelift is the correct term here, the wheel he installed is the Sport wheel that was offered when the car was facelifted for the 2001+ model year... non M's with the sport package got a similar wheel, while M5's got the beefier one with the tri color stitching.

    • @fifficus
      @fifficus 7 років тому +1

      Facelift came 09/2000. The new steering wheel came 12/2001. So facelift is not the correct term for this wheel.

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  7 років тому

      The steering wheel IN M5's, which is what we're talking about here, came 9/2000. Making the new one the facelift M5 wheel. The old wheel was used in sport package non-M cars, but not even the actual M5 wheel.

  • @Smennyboy
    @Smennyboy 10 років тому

    Wow, that looks amazing! Does the M stitching mean its from a proper M car? Sold one of the older style wheels a year ago with that stitching. Didn't fit, my old car had single stage airbag, and the wheel dual stage. Found it randomly at a shelf at the wreckers. Sold it for three times as much when I found out it didn't fit though :p Always worth it to buy M parts from wreckers, they have no idea how much it's worth

    • @e39source87
      @e39source87 10 років тому

      M stitching generally indicates that it was sold as an M car. M3, M5, etc. Cars with sport or M packages had the same wheel, but with black stitching. Sorry to hear that your upgrade didn't work for you though, at least you made some cash!

    • @Smennyboy
      @Smennyboy 10 років тому

      ***** Kinda regretting I sold it now. My new E39 has the M sport package, but the older style wheel. One month too old to be facelift! Would have been cooler with the M stitching on it. Anyway, the facelift wheel looks amazing! Makes the entire interior look brand new, when I finally get an M5, I'm definitively gonna have the facelift wheel!

      The E39's airbag changed from a single stage to dual stage in May, 1999. The newer style sport steering wheels will fit, but the airbags will not. You'll need to search for steering wheels from E39s before May, 1999.

    Another quick steering wheel question for you here if you don't mind. If you don't have a torque wrench, can you get away with doing it by hand and trying to match the feel of how tight it was to begin with, or is it absolutely necessary to get it to that exact number in the video? Thanks very much!

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  8 років тому +1

      +Alain Milotti You could do that... but if it were me, I would use a torque wrench... you don't want the steering wheel popping off at 65 on the highway!

    • @just4stringsnme
      @just4stringsnme 8 років тому

      +E39Source thanks for the reply! so the purpose of torquing it is to make sure it's tight enough, not to prevent over tightening it? from what i've looked up, people are saying to not over tighten it!

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  8 років тому

      +Alain Milotti Well, both. If it is not tight enough, it could potentially loosen up as you're driving. If you overtighten it, you could strip the threads, And that would be bad news. Thus, a torque wrench is the best way to get a happy medium.

      +E39Source Okay thanks. I bought a wheel that came from a 09/99 production car which was exactly when the E46 received some improvements. I did some research and found out that I will need to do some coding with the car through PA Soft or NCS Expert. Did you hear about that?

    • @BobbyOHearn
      @BobbyOHearn 8 років тому

      +jonzxcv you shouldn't need to code anything.

    • @jonzxcv
      @jonzxcv 8 років тому

      Bobby O'Hearn Okay. Reason I ask is because from what I looked up, if the car isn't coded and the airbags are switched, the airbag might not deploy in an accident or may be tripped from slight shocks while driving

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  8 років тому

      +jonzxcv That seems very unlikely. Just make sure the connectors are plugged in fully.

    I love e39Source and I love e39s M5s. I am actually looking to buy an M5 but I can't decide if I should get e39 which I always wanted or the e60. " I know I have to spent little bit of money no matter which one I get in order to keep it going".The only thing thats is holding me back from getting e39 is not knowing whether I will be able to drive it the way I really want to. I would hate to spend so much money on an M car and basically Baby it the whole time I have it so it doesn't cause me any more problems. So my quastion to you and other guys who regularly post updates on their e39s, Do you guys get to enjoy all the 400hp that the car came with or you hold your self from it because of the high maintenance cost?

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  8 років тому +2

      +karim suleymanov The E39 M5s usually run better when they are used. That means driven more frequently, and harder. That is what the car was designed for. Not stupid hard though. Wait until the engine warms up, and don't be bouncing off the rev limiter all the time. But you can certainly use all of it's power without causing a lot more to service. You generally run into issues on cars that have been babied their entire lives, like carbon build up or connecting rod bearing failure.

    Guys, thanks very much for posting this guide. I followed this guide exclusively but you should point out in the this video ua-cam.com/video/j-k88BPuqp0/v-deo.html Namely, when putting on the new steering wheel you must make sure the centre indent lines up with the the one on the new wheel. I put everything back together and my steering wheel was way off line and I didn't know why. A n00b mistake yes, but it's pointed out a lot clearer in other videos. Keep up the good work

    I wish to buy an E39 M5, but im so afraid of all the heavy maintainance costs and i don't really feel like spending 20,000$ on an E39 in parts and maintainance during an ownership. Can someone please mention what to watch out for on these cars? Iv'e heard many things for example wheel bearings, clutch ofcouse, driveshafts and the list goes on. And if i would buy a flawless car, can i avoid changing these parts during an ownership or will they catch me? :D

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  10 років тому

      It's almost impossible to buy car that won't need something. I wouldn't be too afraid of it honestly. I'd look for a clean car, no rust, with a knowledgeable owner, service records, and mostly OEM parts. Working on brakes, engine sensors, stuff like that isn't hard. Just pricey. Don't buy a car with a Service Engine Light.

      ***** Yes that's what i mean, i much rather feel like spending money on service than on new parts. I know the costs of owning an E39 M5 but i don't feel like spending alot in repairs because it is something that you can get away with if you buy the right car :D

      E39s made before 5/1999 cannot have the updated wheel because the airbag won't be compatible. (Single stage until 5/99 and dual-stage after).

    • @dzlnitro
      @dzlnitro 5 років тому

      @@E39Source I installed mine today, and ran into two issues. When I went to lock the airbag in, it only did so on one side, so now it's half out and I'm panicking, secondly, I started it up and the DSC light is staying on....no SRS light though. I've never had any DSC issues before the install. I will most likely have to drive to an auto parts store since I oddly enough do not have a long enough flat head to go in and make contact with the springs inside the wheel. So this should be pretty interesting!

      You would need to install a lot of modules, code them to your car, and install a microphone to add a feature that your car didn't come with. It sounds like all you've got now is the button.

      I have a Dynavin N6 system with which the microphone goes, all I can do from the steering wheel is to increase or decrease the voice, to change the song but when I need to answer the phone then I have to press the tach display to answer. I thought with this wheel with hands free I would not need it. Greeting

      E39Source My Bmw was 528i 1998, when I pulled out my steering wheel airbag with an attachment and a new one with two. Ok I am confident that the airbag will not work, but my biggest problem is that the cable from the steering wheel can not be locked in the old place where they were plugged into the old steering wheel. The old wheel rim is on the steering wheel, and this new as it is seen in a rocket launcher. What do you think he should do to lock the steering wheel. thank you very much

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  6 років тому

      Your 528i has a single stage airbag. The wheel/airbag in this video is a dual stage setup. In order to put the newer one in your car, you'll need to modify the wiring and the ring assembly. I have not done it, but that's the only way to do this right. Search for the forums/online for single to dual stage BMW airbag/wheel retrofit.
