I’ve had this weed eater for 3 years and have always dreaded replacing the line every spring. I can’t believe how easy it is when you actually do it the right way! Thank you!!
Easy for some. I know this design isn't unique to this brand but it's bad. Why doesn't the twine come on a spool that just drops in?
Guess I have the first edition of the 80V unit, mine has clockwise printed circular arrows printed on the base. I used your directions for CCW winding anyway, it doesn't work. Comes spooling out after impact with grass. Clockwise works like a charm though, thanks.
Yep, different models wind in different directions and it has caused a lot of confusion for folks.
Thank you! After frustrated hours, following the instructions from other videos and the printed usual manual, this did it for me!! I am very much a Non Handy person and usually a relative helping with putting the lines back every year but this year I decided to try it myself and thanks to you, did it in 10 minutes! And, yes, the Kobalt 80v weed eater is a great investment! I have several of the Kobalt 80 V tools, in fact.
Excellent instructional video.
Thank you very much for making it simple for the rest of us👍
Thanks so much. Why do we always do things the hard way 😅
I dreaded every time I had to restring, and even though I used a UA-cam video to help me, it still was a challenge. After viewing several over the past few years, THIS VIDEO WAS THE ABSOLUTE BEST!!!! Thanks for making it so easy!!
Jesus I’ve been doing this wrong for years
AWESOME VIDEO BRO! 100x better than any other video
I can't explain how happy I am to find this video!! Kobalt's instruction manual is horrible, they try to get you to do it the hard/impossible "take it apart" way & all the other videos I've found show that ridiculous "take it apart" method. After trying that for the last 3hrs I was so frustrated I was about to take a hammer to it & go buy a different brand. So you've got my gratitude for making an easy to understand, sanity & money saving, video
PS: I still left a bad review for kobalt bcuz their instructions are atrocious
First, the manual does not indicate to push the knob in.
Second, once the knob is worn it is quite difficult to turn CCW, especially when you are 75 years old.
I too have a number of Kobalt products and I find them handy and extremely well designed.
However, this assembly needs to go back to the drawing board.
It was easy when it was fairly new but not now.
Which is why I take mine apart and wind it manually. Some folks are able to turn the knob as shown in this video and not have any problem. I found that it binds up way to easily using this particular method. The other method is easier to wind without getting the line tangled up and un-evenly distributed on the spool which leads to feeding problems. The only problem is taking it apart and assembling it after winding it manually might seem more difficult at fist. And if you don't have any dexterity in your fingers and hands, then that might be the case, but I find it much easier to take apart and wind it up. I've done it so many times that it just too easy for me. The trick to taking the cover off is to press on the end of each tab "One tab at a time". I sounds crazy, but it works. Press one tab, rotate and press the other tab, rotate and press the other tab in alternating fashion and eventually it will pop right off. I don't use any tools or anything like that. Wind it up by hand and then put the spool back on. That last part is the tricky part, but once you learn how to do it it's easy to do. I made my own video on doing it the manual way that works every time.
❤❤❤ sir I want to thank you for making a video short sweet to the point exactly how to do it on the spot.
I have exact same weed eater and you have just made my life 10 times easier .
Also, you are right it’s one of the best additions, I have purchased to help cut my lawn.
Thank you again I subscribed and I liked it!!
Thank you! This was super simple and you explained the process well. I appreciate the short video. You went straight to the tutorial! Great job keep posting videos.
Best video I have ever found on UA-cam! I have struggled loading my Kobalt for years! Thank you sir
The problem I have had is pushing the head in and turning isn’t working. It is so hard to push. Very frustrating.

I just restrung mine the way you demonstrated. I used .110mm with about 8 ft and it is a little tight to wind, but it worked. Definate thumbs up from me Bro!
Mine does not turn like that anymore. It’s very difficult to refill it at this point. Not sure what to do

Thanks for this! I have found that 'bumping' just doesn't work for this. Maybe it's me, maybe it's the product...but I appreciate your video.
When I get the wire through and twist it, the wire just stays in place and doesn’t wind up with the twists.
I was spooling mine like my gas power one.
I ( of course don't know where the directions are) anyway I wasn't having any luck either way, but I watched your video and it helped a lot! Just wanted to add I was pushing down to hard, to winde it. You get the feel for it after a while!
Success!! Thanks! I have a 40 volt, but it works the same way. YAY!
And this is why I’d rather look up videos on the products I buy vs trying to read the damn tiny print on the stupid manual. Awesome! Much obliged, sir.🙏🏼
THANK YOU!! I knew that you were supposed to load it that way, I just didn't know you had to align the arrows first. It's been so frustrating having it work sometimes and not others and not knowing why.
It is easy when you have a new bump knob. The problem is since you have to bump it to advance the line, it wears out fast - to the point where the arrow you need to line it up disappears. I usually get two years out of a bump knob before I have to replace it. At $12 a pop, that can get expensive for such a small but necessary piece.
That said, I have the 80v mower, trimmer, and blower and love all of them. Wish they were still readily available but it looks like Lowe's has dumped the line and only sells 40v now.
fers!!!! Shiiiiii thank you for sharing this!!!! I haven’t used my weed eater in weeks because I couldn’t remember…& was doing it the hard way!
Thanks for the video. You did a great job filming and explaining what to do. Question : were you using the square .095 line ?
There must be different versions of the cobalt 80 V because first I don’t have arrow to line it up. It’s just a line and second my arrow to wind it is exactly opposite. I go clockwise.
wow! thanks alot, i tried your method, couldn't believe how easy it is....i've been taking it apart all these yrs......
THis is great but not for me. My spool is so tight, I can't get it turn counter clockwise without a pump pliers. No kidding, even without any string, the damn thing won't turn. So I have to do it the hard way.
If it won't catch when winding for restringing... Do you have a fix for that? Video ,? It will turn just doesn't catch.
That was so helpful! Thanks!!!
Thanks BIG time!!! I was able to do it quickly after watching only 3 minutes of your video Your video was a HUGE help. Blessings!!!
Wow that is so much easier. Thanks for the tip of cutting down the .095 to 10 feet!
Omg....😂.. lawn ninja. Took me 1 minute. I have been doing that all wring for years.
My problem is, my version doesn't have that triangle to line up, and also doesn't have a "line in" anywhere. So every year, I spend an hour poking and prodding and trying to get it to work. I eventually do, but what a pain.
I have this very model (80v max) and the head doesn't have an arrow or "line in". It only has to rotation arrows. I wind it this way and it unspools pretty quickly. Taking the head off works but its a pain in the ass.
It takes some real muscles but that's very convenient. Thank you!
May I clarify does the bump feed feature still work?
Just did this, worked for about 5 minutes. Then all the string came out at once. Did it the other way, worked perfect.
I'm using a friend's trimmer and was worried about getting the spool off. you make it look so easy, now for me to try it
Thank you for the assistance, but the weeder is well used and the marks in the bottom are unreadable. had to put the line on the first way
Man, I made the same mistake just looking at the 1st way in the manual. This is so much easier I really appreciate the video!
😂😂LOL!! It's so easy! THANKS for showing me this!
I followed instructions, but when turning counter clockwise ater getting line in it's not happening. Just spins, but the line does not feed in. Any suggestions?
Great instructional video! Unfortunately replacement heads aren't available so I have to shop for a universal head that fits. I hate corporations that don't support their products!
You just saved my sanity and my marriage with your easy to understand instructions. Thank you! (There's another video out there showing that you have to take this apart to wind the string in. That's what my husband was insisting I do, and it was impossible.)
I couldn't agree more! I've been trying the take it apart method for the last few hours & cant get it to work... I was about 30mins from taking a hammer to it & going to buy a different brand, lol. Kobalts instructions are horrible
My problem now is turning the knob…I need to find a tool where I can push in and turn CCW because I can’t do it with my bare hand.
Thank you kind sir, you have made what the instructions went out of their way to make hard now very simple and straight forward after watching your video. Take Care, and thanks again !
For those with weaker hands, I'm getting into my senior hears now. I use a large pair of channel locks to turn the knob while winding the new string in. Makes it a lot easier.
Yes, you're right. Tools like pliers and channel locks can be very handy to have when dealing with objects that get covered in grass, dried mud, or other substances that may cause them to seize up. These tools provide a strong grip and leverage to help loosen and remove stubborn debris, making it easier to work with the object.
You are a lifesaver! I've been trying to make myself learn how to do new things. Got it right first try!
Big THANK YOU. Helped me out a ton. That was super easy
Thank you young blood, shit was frustrating me for half an hour. I just subscribed
I was one of the first with an 80V kobalt string trimmer. I hated the spool so much, I modded it and installed a Pro Head that uses two big string lines cut to length. I had it about 14" diameter.. I think it was 0.10? Big stuff. Wow!! This sucker wa digging ditches!! Lasted a few months.. Finally burned the motor out.. it think it overheated, the cooling air flow to the motor may of be limited by grass or dirt? I don't know.. Was overloaded but Took it So Well. I bought another, and BOY DO I DESPISE THESE CRAPPY HEADS!! Trying to keep it stock, but sick of this puny crap line. Anybody else switch to a cut line that's bigger than stock? To HELL WITH THE SPOOL... This Bang it Crap BS Has been going on Way too long.
Need to check it.. easier to believe it burned out the switch or a wire connection, Need to take it apart. it was puttin' out Like a Pro trimmer should. The motor shaft never bent so should take it. The new on is supposedly a redesign, maybe they added the typical over temp thermostat? With a Head like this, no real need for High speed although really got crap flying. 4 big strings is much better than 2 fishing lines. Kobalt, your 80V stuff is impressive. so far, one battery amongst all I got has served. The 80V Blower is Excellent, the Mower is Good, the small tiller is good but kind of heavy. String Trimmer (If they'd go Pro Head) and Blower are Tops..
Much appreciated! I lost my instructions-think I accidentally tossed them
Oh my gosh - I have one and I always hated when I had to add line. thank you , thank you!! Sure glad this showed up on my home page! Wow! Oh I am so excited to try that! LOL
My neighbor had told me how hard this was. I tried myself today. What a bear. But your video saved the day. Much appreciated.
Thank you so much for this video. Been doing it the hard way for over a year now! This is so much easier!!!
Life Saver!!
Thanks bud. On mine it’s easier to take off the top part and run it through the middle of the inner part then snap the top back on. Much easier than “fishing” the line through blind.
Great video I used mine so much it’s hard to find the arrow to line up. Wore off but I do it the other way when I loose my mind!
Holy shit I’m sitting here still in awe of how you can actually do this, I’ve only ever done the first method 😂
The base works fine but the weedeater head is worthless will not feed then it will feed everything out like it’s shitting diarrhea
Buy for the base and battery it’s ok but the head it pure trash
Yes this was the best investment for a weedeater as a you don't have to mix gas picking up and go had mine for about 3 years and would buy one again if this one every stops takes about an hour to to charge enough time for a break and drink and then go back to work
OMG ! LOL
I've been doing it the old way😂 Thank You.
I used to purchase the pre-would spool at extra cost. Thank you for this video!
Thank you so much. I was trying to do it the hard way. Bless you Sir 🙏❤️
God bless you❤. I was about to chunk my trimmer in the garbage 😂
You’re a life saver! I’ve been doing some goofy sh*t, lol.
mine doesn't have the arrows, I pushed down on the center knob while pushing the line in
Thanks for the help!
You are welcome
Thank you so much Sir. Been doing it the hard way
Thank You sooooooo much, that taking that cap off was killing me this is way easier.... I guess I should have read the directions, Pains me to say the Wife was right again.... Thank You so Much again...
LMAO; I never read the instructions and my wife fuss at me all the time about that.
Wow..great video! What a time saver! Thank You!
Thank you so much for this video. I’ve been doing it the hard way since first purchasing mine in 2019.
This way is so easy
Tried this but 10 foot of .80 string lasted 5 minutes.
Well I am going to try this as soon as I get home because I tried it the way it said and it did nothing but cause me aggravation.
Dang dude, nice video. Thanks for the tip.
Thanks for the video!!!! Saved me a lot of time and frustration
Very concise and easy to follow instructions. Thanks a lot!
Mine will not wind stop, it just turns and don’t wind up the lin I've been doinge
Saved me countless hours!!!! Thanks!
Thank You Sir for this fine video, saved me a big pain in the ass!
You are the freaking man. Thanks so much. I feel like an idiot.
Wow you are brilliant I’ve been doing it the wrong way for over a decade !
Oh. My. God!! I've been trying to figure this out since last year! 😆 thanks! Got a like from me👍
I probably could've read the manual 😂 but the video was easy!
I got mine threaded inside but when I turn it doesnt wind it up. Any suggestions?
I can’t believe how long I’ve been doing this the hard way…
Very useful video. Thanks!
Thanks buddy first time i had to restring. You made it easy
great vid. i figured this out months after buying it.
This is the best video on this subject, thank you.
Thank you. I also appreciate that you made it easy to know which thickness and length string to use.
Glad it was helpful!
Freaking love you man! Thank you.
THANK YOU! That was way easier!
Thank you so much! Best video ever!
What an excellent how to video. I have one of these too, and just like you, I think it's a great lawn tool and I've also been doing it the hard way!
This makes life so much easier. Sometimes I take the string out to see how fast I can get it back in 😂😂😂
THANK YOU!!!!
You're welcome!
Damn, really lmao I’ve been doing the same thang by taking it a part well I’ll be 😂😂😂😂 good info
😂😂😂I had to share this with the world; I've been doing it the hard way for over 20 years.
Sweet!! Thanks for this info!!
Excellent video..definitely much easier than the Nasa directions.
Glad you liked it
Excellent video sir! Much appreciated, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. So much easier! I subscribed to your channel just because of this.
Thanks for the sub!
Thanks! And I agree with you on the best weed eater too!
Great instructions! Thank you!
Thanks! Best video. The third one I tried!
Thanks so much! I was doing it wrong too!
I can only WISH that mine turned as easy as your did. It's a twenty minute struggle trying to wind mine up.
