Gen 3 Range Rover - Real Off Road Test
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 лют 2025
- Something a little different as we take this MK III Range Rover L322 for an off road test at Lithgow. Through the Wombat Holes at the Powerlines and then down Nine Mile Steps to Ali Babas Cave and back up.
It's interesting to see a standard modern 4wd Land Rover Range Rover attempt this sort of terrain. We have seen many 4x4's both standard and modified struggle on these tracks. Our main worry was clearance and we took care not to damage the front or rear bars and smash in the sills as it climbed and dropped off the rock steps.

Best off-roader on earth 🌍 I want it. Greetings from France 🇫🇷
Proper L322 off roading video! Thanks for not mucking it up with music!
That's what do many fail to appreciate when comparing the range rover to other vehicles, it'll go anywhere off-road, cruise in perfect comfort, give gtis a run for their money and doesn't look out of place in any social setting.
Really is a unicorn vehicle
Missing only one element though: Economical running costs! hahah There is always some sort of compromise
that is crazy for a stock vehicle that the queen would drive and still goes very well off-road especially for being completely stock!
Yeah she did well. That's a cool way of putting it 👍
How is the old series holding up mate?
@@lror the series is going great mate still exploring heaps of tracks in her!
@@sebastiantaylor9188 we got to go out soon mate.
@@lror definitely mate, I’ll have to show you some of the tracks I’ve found
The Queen also drives a Defender 110 SW. And she used to repair military trucks during WWII.
Fellow L322 driver here, great to see you really using it!
I'm amazed at just how capable these cars are, considering they're also draped in leather and can smash up a motorway and licence-losing speeds in extreme comfort! :)
Thing can hit 120 easily not saying I did this personally.
@@user-rl6px5ob3d I agree ;)
The best off road video for range rover I had ever seen.
The 322 doing what it does best - and naked too! Just shows that you don't need to deck a car out like a Camel Trophy. _No_ oversized tyres, _no_ oil rig bumper with obligatory winch, _no_ chunky tyres, _no_ massive spotlights, _no_ stickers or decals plastered everywhere, and a guy in the driving seat who knows what he's doing with heaps of mechanical sympathy. No revving the nuts off the car and ''going for it'' like so many other 4x4 people we see on UA-cam. Nicely done!
The very best off road drive of a Range Rover HSC i ever seen., now i know this Range Rover HSC is a capable off roader and i love it.
People seriously underestimated the L322. I ran Goodyear Duratracs on mine and they were the bomb diggity.
Thanks for recording your trip.
Well you dont often see them out so its understandable that they are underestimated. Better tyres would go a long way.
@@lror yes those big old brakes made it difficult to get a rim that would take a decent sized sidewall
J Denmark big rims and big brakes are ok for street use bit not off road. It looks liks this vehicle sustained some damage doing this too.
Taking any vehicle like this off the tarmac is just asking for body and rim damage.
@@jessewoody5772 more to the point of taking any stock vehicle that damage can happen.
Off-road mods are jacked up and bigger diameter tires. Do that to this range and it would be that much better.
Underbody on these is built with it in mind as well.
@@jessewoody5772 and to clarify the guy responding wasn’t wanting big rims, I’m thinking he meant the big brakes meant you couldn’t go for too small a rim, to then have a big rubber on there to be heat stock diameter without doing a lift.
Best looking SUV and really capable too. This generation looks really good.
The owner has balls to throw his Landy into this kind of landscape. Respect! And a perfect example of team work on wild tracks! Well done.
the driver skill is just awesome..
my td6 can take me anywhere, watching this encourages me to go further, what a 4x4.
I knew that Range Rovers are capable but that was better than I expected! 👍
Finally, a range rover doing what it's supposed to do.
The tires are WAY out of their depth and still the car goes - amazing!
Awesome , just for being all stock , im still impressed by the street tyres on how well handle the terrain and yes the driver and company did an awesome job .
Wow such an awesome video. Thank you. I have an 05 rangie and knew she could do this but have been a bit shy on attempting it with her. Sent this video to a mate who said id want an 80 serious LC after going in his. Told him my rangie can do anything his LC could. Here's the proof 😊
I Love it. It show the capabilities of a full size SUV in stock form. Very impressive.
One of the best videos I’ve seen, superbly drive showing just how capable these Range Rovers are. Nice to see them being used as they were designed for and not just Chelsea tractors. Great work 👍
Man, I'm impressed. One of the best real off-road videos I've seen to date. Great off-roading skill, hats off! And all of that on regular tyres! Would love to own one of them Rovers:)
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Amazing offroad skills man
Impressive for stock and luxuary car!!!
Stock lift?
Excellent! Low range, some ground clearance and a locking rear diff is all one needs. As long as it's dry and you're not in a hurry, street tires will get you there.
Outstanding rover Outstanding driver :i work in London from time to time & if I ever bump in the queen I'll recommend the driver for a MBE great video
Awesome to see a FFRR off-road, thanks for sharing!
Wow ol girl still capable...and not even wearing off-road tires. BEST 4 X 4 X FAR 🙌🏽
I'm looking at buying a range rover for daily driving and trails at the weekend, good to see one being used for what it was designed for. Impressive how well it did on road tyres
LOVE the L322!
Proper driving of a RangeRover!.
Best L322 off-road vid i have come accross on UA-cam. Excellent. Do you recall what Terrain Response program you used?
Thank you. It was in rock crawl mode, and hdc was on but the speed was increased before it kicks in.
Astounding vehicle! I was the first commercial 4WD tour operator in Australia to run one of these L322's back 2002 with the TD6 diesel engine. 100% international visitors to Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley, Hill End and Barrington Tops. Reliability? Never an issue when properly maintained and I earned A$1200/couple per day. That level of service was simply not possible with any Japanese 4WD. I recently sold my 05 4.4 litre L322, sight unseen for double market value so there is still market for this much under-rated 4WD if well maintained and I miss it already...
Який мотор ?
4.4 BMW?
I like this shit right here man! Love to see how the stock rigs run the ruts
amazing off road driving skills! Respect from Canada... owned a RRS for 14 years now, has never let me down the Jaguar V8 still roars! :)
263k on my brothers 06 Range Rover Westminster! Still going strong.💪
👍👍👍 The truth is out.
@@subarubuildz1738 👍👍👍👍
Amazing! Nice driving skills!
Very pleasing to see this vehicle performing like this!
Thanks for putting this vid up.
It’s great to see a variety of different off readers going through their paces.
It’d be good to see a some footage of the w163 ML class Mercs. They are a surprisingly tough and capable vehicle.
Yeah it's great seeing how each car reacts.
Mercedes if you're reading this we will be happy to test your vehicles 😎
Thanks for this, I have a 2006 L322 with Bridgestone Blizzack tires, they would have better traction than you had but my main concern is the strength of the sidewalls as they damage easily. This video certainly encourages me to give it a try once I get better tires, I do miss my Classic Rangerover which was awesome offroad and my P38 was no slouch either.
One of the best range rover off-road videos I have ever seen! I would like to take my rr sport to do off-roading
Thank you. Go and enjoy, the sports are awesome rigs.
The big L322 showing how it’s done! Can both have a comfortable ride and a great off-road experience. My old man wants a L322 with a TDV8 over his current Td5 D2 daily!
Impressive for a stock 4x4. Excellent traction control system and downhill gearing.
Mate just bought one of these what an amazing beast I want one now
Very impressive. Especially without off road tires
Awesome machine. Can do all the gnarley stuff like all the modded hick Cruisers in the afternoon but in the evening take the missus out for dinner at the Ritz. Bear Grylls on wheels
Another kick-a$$ video. Like seeing all kinds of 4x4s on the trail, and don’t get to see much of Range Rovers. I’d be mighty interested in seeing someone bash an older Cayenne (with a transfer case) or a Touareg, just for the hell of it. This guy in Italy has good videos running a Fiat Campagnola (!). Actually a really good off roader.
Thanks a lot, it's always interesting seeing something different doing this sort of terrain. Would be good to get one of those rigs out with us.
Probably the longest video I’ve watched on UA-cam, nice film .
THE BEST 4X4 BY FAR & IT ISN'T EVEN CLOSE!! GREAT VIDEO BROS!!! 👊🏾💪🏾✊🏾😎✊🏾🤟
Impressive. The traction control working so well over those cross-axles.
As the other guys have commented, considering the terrible wheel and tyre package it’s running this went awesome!
With some decent rims & treads this would have killed it!
Hey. I also have series L322 with AT tires. I'm just starter my friendship with offroad. I can't imagine another car for me. You's film is awsome. I looking forward to see another one.
Not bad on low profile road tyres
Yeah, a bit more sidewall would have been better. The rims came close and touched a couple of times.
Indeed.
@@lror yep 3:52
i drive my TDV8 off road most days, over fairly harsh terrain its actually awesome on BFG all terrains
I got a 2003 l322 4.4 v8... best one Iv had by far 👌🏼
Man that exhaust-sound is just SWEET! The tires is a total disgrace though, and failing a great vehicle immencely. A good set of rubber and, viola...success! Thanks again for a very enjoyable video!
Yes tyres would be a big improvement 😊👍
Bought a tuned 08 TDV8 3.6l EGR and PDF delete, exhaust done, it flies, drives awesome, is pretty much the best riding car I’ve ever had which includes a few Euro’s the best being an XJR Jag. Anyway, bought the L322 to tow a 2.5t boat I was yet to buy... bought the boat in Pt Lincoln so drove from Sydney, hooked the boat up and as soon as I hit it up a bit straight into limp mode, off and on again then off and as long as I went easy it was ok for a few hundred klm’s so persevered with it, it went into limp mode about 20 times and finally gave up just before Cobar, towed it in and they couldn’t fix it so towed it to Dubbo, they put a scan tool on it (it shows every imaginable fault) but couldn’t fix but got it going as before (a new correct battery helped) Left the boat at Cobar (it’s now in Parkes, a mate rescued it, it’s a 32’ folding trimaran, the biggest you can trailer without a permit) Got the Rangie home with only one limp mode, dumped the fuel in the filter and it refused to start again, put a new in tank fuel pump in which the scans mainly pointed to and still no go: so far I’m out just over $4k, it’s booked in next week at Gemstar, I’m expecting at least $6,000 and that’s with warranty. I bought it ($27k) coz I wanted a V8 diesel but couldn’t afford a 4.5l Toyota with under 400,000klm on it or wanted a Chev or Ford yank pick up, if I wasn’t retired I’d keep it and throw money at it or build it up with a Cummins: shame coz they’re such a nice vehicle to drive... The towie at Cobar reckons Land Rover are worse than Jeep, he tows more of them and you don’t see them out west at all (all come from the city) Where I live you’ll see a dozen new Rangies every hour, if not more, the trick is to buy new and sell before 120,000 klm. They reckon Jeep is the most unreliable vehicle and Ford’s PowerStroke the worst diesel ever made. For sale 2008 Range Rover Vogue Luxury.
I'm a Toyota fan but i have to concede that the Range Rover is an extremely impressive off roader for a mall crawler. That Land Cruiser must be triple locked so for the Range Rover to follow it up that trail is something of note, considering it will outclass the Cruiser's ride and handling on-road.
The next question i guess is how reliably can it continue to do it.
Very nice video!! Nice driving too..... impressive...
Never gonna do this to mine but its capabilities are insane and I'm sure alot owed to the skilled driver
Nice video. I especially like the views from different angles. I have a 99 P38 and am impressed with what it has done off road on 16 inch BFG KO2 tires. I adjusted the off road height setting to give maybe an extra 2 inches. Otherwise stock. My 2008 RRSC only goes on pavement.
P38 💪
P38 is the most beautiful RR ever made except Range Rover Classic 3 door in Tuscan Blue:)
Absolutely brilliant. Thought we did ok in my stock L322 (check out our video) in Wales but that track was unbelievable. No drama at all for these excellent vehicles. Thanks for sharing this, bar far the best I have seen. Subscribed
Slow gentle acceleration and let it drive through. Keep up the good work they are crazy good off-road.
Been thinking on getting one of these to accompany my D2 and this has really convinced me. Thanks!
Only range Rover can drive there no other car in the world 🌎, best off-roader, masterpiece of British engineering
This is amazing,to do this with low profile road tyres is just ...wow... I can only imagine what it can do with proper off road tyres
Respect. They’re so underrated.
Indeed 👍
I wouldn't say that they are underrated as the capability is more than obvious - but their reliability (short and long term) is, unfortunately, rubbish - and I have driven this car, it's marvellous off the road - great car ...
@@christ.7137 Exactly. And unfortunately, reliability, and practical and affordable repair are absolutely essential elements of useful 4wds. That aside, that is a very entertaining area!
@@alexanderSydneyOz I do agree that's why living in Africa I do drive an old LC 100 version ...and you cannot kill it ...
@@christ.7137 I have a diesel 80 series, which my father bought 22 years ago. Before that, he had a 60 series for years. I swear, nothing on either car has ever broken or fallen off, in a combined 700,000km. I don't mean to be overly negative about the RR on this thread, as that could viewed as a bit rude :) - the older RRs pre pneumatic suspension were definitely ahead of their time and ahead of the pack in ability to traverse terrain - but while having been very capable cars since their inception, they break alot, then cost alot more to fix. Contrast the original short wb landcruisers - overall, very crude, but absolutely unbreakable. That is what people were driving on real adventure trips to cape york in the 70s!
All that aside, I was in this area only a matter of weeks ago, and was wondering why there were 4wds on the rough track next to the main road near the quarry!
Wow; what an astonishingly capable vehicle and well driven too!
If you buy one of these sorts of vehicles and you're not regularly driving it in various sorts of ultra extreme conditions, you're simply wasting your money. The percentage of people who do take their RR, Defender, Land Cruiser etc onto seriously gnarly terrain is tiny.
Back in the 80's, it was king in 4x4 world, it still performs like a 👑, that why l have only stuck with Range Rovers even mine l322
Awesome cars both on and off road 😎
It shares the same body frame from discovery
Same DNA inside and same terrific terrain
👍 response
Nope, RR Sport shares the frame with Disco. This RR is a unibody vehicle
As @@romantkachuk168 mentioned you are thinking of the Range Rover Sport L320 which shares the frame with the Disco 4, the full size Range Rover L322 in the video is vastly different.
Yes of course. You are right 🤫
All.this on road tyres… I have 2 L322’s … love the footage
Not bad for Mall terrains mate.
On road tyres, too! It's scrabbling all over the place, however. It looks like it has an electronic diff lock, where the computer brakes on the wheel which loses traction. Saves a lot of money on expensive mechanicals, makes the car lighter, but does have limitations. Seems to work fine enough, I must admit that I am surprised! It can then be returned to the missus, right in time for Monday's shopping. Haha ;-)
awesome driving dude
Thanks brother 🍻👍
Impressive to see those town 4x4... succeed on those tracks. The body is very rigid with little travel for the wheels! Great to watch!
Would be nice to see a new Defender struggling offroad with you !
Not too shabby!!!
And with street tires.
I would love to see with some 33" KM2'S.
Respect to you sir, you certainly know how 4 wheel driving is done!
This makes me excited to get my classic and p38 finished up.
That Range Rover is amazing all this on standard road tyres
Excellent driving mate for what looks like standard road tires
Yes everything is standard including hwy terrains.
Great video, watching your video has made me want to buy a mark 3, I always wanted the TDV8 but I was impressed by your V8 petrol
Very nice cars both on and off road. This one is a TDV8, good strong motor. Good luck in your hunt 👍

On 20" highway tires. Wow! Incredible you didn't get a flat- smooth driving!
Some 32" all terains and a steady foot would really show how capable these are. Driving with traction control takes a lil bit of learning, but oNce you learn how the system operates, it's awesome. You cant let up off the gas completely. Once you do, the system will unlock the slipping wheels and will have to sort things out all over again. Brake with your left foot, keeping your right slightly in the throttle. Later in the vid he began to learn to stay in the throttle and let the system sort it out.
this is what the new defender is based on
All that tech is upgraded in the new defender. But it was clear from this generation that it already works like a charm. Any damage to those sensors though, and it's game over.
Still the land cruiser is the King when it comes to off-road
From 7:00 very impressive
Brain and machine at work
Great video and the RR went very very well all things considered. Tyre pressures looked maybe a bit hard, but guess lowering a bit might have been risky for rim and sidewall damage etc. Traction control looks to work very well though
Tyre pressures were let down but being 20 inch rim with low profiles it was risky. There were times the rims got close at these pressures. Maybe a tyre upgrade in the future 😊👍
not bad for 2.7 tones of vehicle! getting one soon ;-) love it
Yeah not to mention all the weight of camping gear etc. Good luck with your new rig 👍
Not bad for truck with bicycle tires , the diesel motor grunt helps too
Great video and thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much! Great to see that i am not the only one taking his L322 out to the playground were it belongs.. i am daily driving my babies as much as i can and i love all of them... and you did it with the 20"s on! 😳 Crazy! Just take off the mudflaps and some decent tires...btw: what was the message on the dash at 10'59? It came twice, would be interesting to know if you'd remember.. many thanks again! Cheers from Serbia
Fantastic to hear that some are taking their L322 out to play 👍
Half way through we took off the rear mud flaps as they scrapped, maybe we should have taken the front off as well.
I don't remember exactly what the chime was for, possibly seat belt or when it went into the extra extended height and it was letting me know to reset the height once i cleared the obstacle.
For a stock rr its excellent on those tyres. But when you compare it to a defender with arb diff lockers, those sections would of been so easy . But you cannot knock it for a standard road vehicle.
The Range Rover Vogue is a luxury SUV, imagine the 4x4 version. And that car is about 12 years old.
Oh brother. That was brilliant!.
Is it still fitted with the standard 19inch rims? Makes it hard to get decent tyres for it. On Maries D3 HSE she has A/T tyres fitted and it makes all the difference in that gritty rubbly stuff.
At the moment she's hunting around for a set of 18inch, which will just clear the V8 brakes but will allow her to put a much larger side profile tyre on the car.
Great to see the traction control working to take you pretty much anywhere you point it. On Mall terrains as @TVR161 put it lol.
Brilliant stuff cobber. Cheers to all you blokes for sharing. Hooroo for now.
Im so glad you liked this one.
It's actually running standard 20inch wheels 😬 painted black. Tdv8 with the brembo brakes up front makes it hard to find smaller wheels to wrap around them. Tuff Ant and Compomotive do make 18s that fit. Extra sidewall would definitely be nice but over all she did great.
@@lror Was awesome to see! Thank you!
@@lror ... and 20inch! Damn mate. They defo didnt want this one chewing pebbles. lol
The only reason people are "so surprised" is because opinionated bogans with a barrel full of opinion and teaspoon of knowledge are always talking smack in the comment sections of every video.
If you have EVER actually driven one, you will see why it is one of the very best 4x4s in the world. Still to this day.
I have a TDV8 one, a TD5 Defender, a 60 series 12HT Landcruiser and 3 FJ45 Landcruisers. Believe me, when I say, as good as the others are, they aren't on the same galaxy as the Range Rover...
Now whether you would actually take one off road due to cost of it and parts is another thing, but as far as its capabilities go, there is a reason they are so expensive. All the diffs, air suspension, traction control, engine and gearbox capabilities aren't there to "pose" as people like to point out.
Bang on. 👍👍👍 It's either yanks or Asians who are jealous.
This year I want to see him off-road again! )
Definitely ☺
awesome
Awesome video 👍
I bought a 2010 LR RR Supercharged for my wife and being wanting to off road it. 3 reasons why I haven't. 1. My wife will kill me if she finds out. LOL! 2. It's way too responsive with the throttle and I am afraid that I will send it out the hole too fast into a tree or rock. 3. The truck is in mint condition and low miles so I will not forgive myself if I reck it. No matter what this SUV looks great in the city and offroad. In my opinion it is the best-looking SUV for any occasion. This thing can literally do everything and look great doing it. You can literally go off-roading in total comfort.
I would love to see a RR L405 doing this
I have a 2008 rrv v8 great look, ride well till they break down! The diodes in alternator, egr motor, intercooler hoses, thermostat housing all issues and things I have changed myself. They are a labor of love ! Oh and the steering lock issues they have!
