I like this gouache. I first bought the set of 8 tubes to try it, and I thought it was great, so I decided to get the set of 24, which cost me something like 15 Euros, which is extremely affordable for that much decent paint. Some of the colors seem a little weak and toned down, but that doesn't bother me, I don't mind if it's just for sketches and fun. And having the larger set obviously means having to mix less, which means that the colors stay reasonably unmuddy. I think it blends really well and dries nicely, and those are the most important things to me when it comes to sketchbook gouache. I think for artists who are looking for a cheap set of gouache for sketches and practice, or for beginners who just want to try the medium, they are a really good and affordable choice. Oh and I totally appreciate the fact that when there is some leftover paint on the palette, it will not crumble and it will rewet easily, much unlike a few other cheap gouaches that I have tried.
I agree! They are very nice and easy to use! And the price is hard to beat XD
I really think you should have mentioned that "art creation" is their school/childre's line and therefore the paints in the jars (which are their proffesional quality gouache) are a different product. The colors from the jars are brighter/deeper and way easier to spread evenly.
I should've! I didn't find that precise information when I was reading, sorry I missed it! Thanks for the info :)
I hope you'll have an opportunity to try a set of their artist grade gouache one day. I'm not sure how they compare to W&N gouache (they're not available for me yet), but they're my favourite so far and they're also available in 20 ml tubes or 50ml jars (and every color is in the same price if you don't count metallics!). If you water them down they create clear, transparent washes as, unlike art Creation Gouache, they don't contain fillers such as kaolinite clay, just a load of pigments.
Talens has product folders in pdf on their site you can enter that in their search bar on the site, it is not an obvious link they have online, but they do have printables of each of their products online including color charts with ratings
Really liked the way you did two sets of swatches, one from wet gouach and one from dry. Thank you, I always wonder if there's any difference so this was useful.
Thanks Oto! :)
It's really relevant with gouache!
The two sets of swatches was really useful! Love your painting! Your demo paintings are always so nice!
Thanks Grace!! :) The double swatching is something I'll try to remember for future videos too (especially gouache!) :)
Looking into gouache options. So glad you have these videos!
What a beautiful painting! So serene. These look fun to play with. :)
Thank you so much Mikki! :)
They were fun! Still a beginner-level quality, but fun :)
I love how you did this review! So helpful to see how the paint looks once it's been dried and reactivated. Dat mould doe! Egads.
The video is not done without a floating magical Pekoe cameo! 💜 Such a patient cutie.
Thank you! :)Floating magical Pekoe!! Haha! XD She is pretty clueless...
Pretty sketch! 🙂
When I start painting I practice with gouache because it was a weird and interesting media here in my country.
My first ones was the reeves and they are okay but I wanted to try another brand to compare the quality because I wasn't sure if I like them (the brand) so I get the set of 24 colors from Royal Talens's gouache wich was a birthday gift and I realize that reeves wasn't a good choice for getting better in gouache and royal talens might be, I mean, I work with them a year now and I love them so much the colors are so beautiful and bright, and they are not so expensive so it is a good deal. Now I buy another brand wich I don't know if exist outside of Southamerica, it calls Alba and the gouache is professional quality so I can say that compare the three of them I prefer Alba (of course) but Royal talens is a really good quality anyway, have colors that other brands don't and helps you a lot to improve your paintings.
Also I might say that here in Argentina we don't have a lot of brands who sales gouache or acrylic gouache like in U.S.A so even if we are stock with not so many brands we appreciate what we have at least. Love your videos and again, thanks to you and your channel I got the van gogh watercolors and I'm still in love with them🤗💖
Thank you so much for sharing this with us! :)
It's great that you have access to the Alba paints and that they are good! Going for the locally available supplies is always the #1 best option. And I'm so glad you still enjoy your VanGogh paints!! :D
Hi. You forgot to mention that this is the Art Creation line from Talens, which is their kids grade line (actually bellow student grade in most products). For really good, creamy, opaque and very pigmented non-streaky paint you should try their designer gouache line. They call it Extra Fine Quality (plus some dutch words I don't know how to translate). I also hear it smells better than the Art Creation version, although there's still a slight chalky smell to it. In behaviour this Fine Quality gouache performs very similar to Winsor & Newton professional line, being at almost half the price for a larger amount of paint (at least in Europe). Hope this information helps :)
How fun! These definitely seemed suited to bright, sunlit scenes. But, it's good to know that they mix well, and it looks like mixing the black did a good job of darkening the tone while still allowing it to look like a dark color, and not just black. Over all, it does look like a versatile set that would be great for experimentation.
I don't think I've seen it in my area, and I already bought a set of Arteza gouache that I've barely touched. :P So, I probably won't be hunting it down myself, but I enjoyed learning about it. Thanks for sharing such a thorough review, and I'm so glad the mold didn't end up becoming a bigger problem!
Thanks Ari! :)
I think you've made a good choice with the Arteza gouache set, from what I've seen. It seems really nice! :) I hope you'll have fun with it when you get the chance!
ARGH! THE DREADED MOLD! I still have your 'PLS don't mold' tape on my shelves. :D And these look awesome, I have to be careful not to start on the gouache collection... Not until I've finished my watercolor one. :D
Hahahaha! You kept those!!!! XD I hope the paints are still fine in their little jars...
If you want to start a gouache collection, might be wiser to invest in something a bit higher level, as you're already quite skilled with watercolor and skilled as an artist too ;)
They are, the only difference is that if I leave them to dry on the porcelain palette for too long they start to smell like unwashed-plate-where-you-ate-eggs. Freschìn, in Venetian (no Italian OR foreign equivalent). So I simply have to be a fast cleaner. :D
And I'd probably go with that, either W&N, Schmincke or Holbein, I've seen they could be good choices.
Love those colors! 😃 The painting turned out beautiful! Thanks for the demo. 👍
My cat reacts to the psst psst at the beginning of your video
Hehe, oh no!! 😮
Great video Eve! 😁 That was definitely a little yucky surprise... oops. 😉 At least you could cut it out and not waste all of it. I love how your demo painting came out. 🤗
Thanks Val!
I've been having bad luck with my gouaches and the first case of mold was WAY WORSE lol. I'm so glad that this one was a tiny superficial patch...
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault oh wow! 😲 Maybe this should be one of the times I should be happy about low humidity here. I have been lucky...no mold. Do you have a problem with your watercolors molding too? I know you have said not to add anything to gouache, but for this issue would honey help?
Actually, my gouaches that developed the most mold were by M.Graham, so I'm not sure the honey is the best idea for that.... (oddly enough). None of my watercolors have molded yet, but they tend to be in non-airtight palettes.
I really love royal talen art supplies and Ive been debating on whether I wanted the royal talen professional fine gouache or something else or if these entry level ones are similar to reeves or artezas set. So hard to chose!!
I love how those cakes dried too.. definitely a lot better than reeves.
Indeed! Gouache is truly better fresh from the tube, but some dry really better than other :)
I would suggest getting good quality gouache if you can and skipping the entry level stuff.
Yea, it seem likes the entry level stuff are really.. chalky when dried on paper. Was it like this with these?
Nice demo. I have the 24 color set of Art Creations gouache. Although the box says gouache, the tubes say tempera. I find that these are not like a true gouache but really more like tempera. The paints run out of the tubes. I've used Holbein, Arteza and Winsor & Newton gouaches, which are all stiff out of the tube and have much better opacity then AC. Layering AC gouache tends to reactivate the layer below, so it's difficult to get what I consider to be a true gouache result with these paints. I expected a thicker paint with better opacity. I had problems using the AC paint directly from the tube because it had a tendency to streak, but I did not have streaking problems when using reactivated dry paint from my palette.
I enjoyed painting with these. I bought these because I wanted an affordable set with more natural colors than the garish neon colors in my Arteza set. The 24 color AC set, although lacking a good orange, has a nice range of natural colors that blend well with each other. I like that AC gouache dries on the palette without cracking, a problem with all of the other gouache brands I've used except Holbein. AC gouache is reasonably priced. Just don't expect it to act like other gouache brands.
aw so the jar paints are entry level as well... I was hoping they’d be more like the nicer tube gouache Talens also sell, as I can get the jars from my local shop. thank you for all the info!!
Actually, I didn't do my research well! The jars are good quality, not entry-level paints! Sorry about the mix-up! They are worth a try, if you don't mind the light chemical smell they have (that is very common with Royal Talens products).
ah no problem, that’s great news then! lol. the Talens smell I’m familiar with, what’s up with that. everything smells... funny to some degree. anyway tysm!
Can you please do their professional line? The Talens Plakkatverf Gouache. I heard in America you get them in Jars instead of tubes. (You had twi of them here)
It is really hard to find a thourough review on them, but since they are easily aquireable here in Europe I'd be really thankful!
I would love to! But I can't really afford them (since I can't easily find them here!). I'll keep it in mind though, thanks for the suggestion!
thank you so much for this! helped me lots
Thanks so much for this! There are many reviews on different watercolour brands on UA-cam, but far less for gouache. In my country these actually come in small jars. I only have the deep rose, the cobalt blue and a warm yellow - deep yellow (very bad mix of colours, I must admit), but what is weird is that my Deep Rose is very different than yours. It's a bit darker and way more transparent. The cobalt is very opaque and the Deep Yellow is pretty opaque too, but the Deep Rose seems pretty useless for gouache :(
The gouache that comes in jars is better quality than the tubes I tried here. As for your transparent Deep Rose gouache, don't worry! That's to be expected! Is the pigment PV19 or PR122? Some pigments will be transparent no matter what, even in gouache. You can try mixing a bit of titanium white in it, if you want, to see if it gives you more opacity :)
I was just confused about the Deep Rose because you seem to have that colour too and it's completely different. I will check the pigment when I get home, but from their website, they don't seem to have more than one type of gouache, which is even more confusing :)) .
Hello! I will make my own customized palette with tube paints squeezed into small half pans. Im wondering how to avoid the moldy thing just like what happened with yours :( should i just clean the half pans first with rubbing alcohol?
That was great info, thanks. What is the white removable tape you use? I've only found colored washi tape or green and blue paint tape.
Thanks! It's a bit washed out in the video, but it's beige masking tape.
(This one : 0.5 Inch Masking tape

Beautiful demonstration.. where did u get the brush holder
Interesting so are these different to the ones I have the Plakkartverf?
I think the jars are very similar to the Plakkartverf tubes (if not exactly the same paint), the tubes I have are the student/kid range.
Plakkaatverf is pretty much what we call (cheap) gouache in the Netherlands, but the same word is also used for some other types of paint, so it's not a great word. Royal talens seems to just use it for some of their gouache for whatever reason.
Excuse me but what kind of sketchbook can you use with gouache?:)
Any watercolor sketchbook should work well! Even those with cellulose paper work very well, since gouache is more opaque and "travels" less on the paper :)
Art Creation is a student line of talens gouache wise. I seem to have issues with that brand but that can be user error. So I baught a second set of the art creation. But, jeah, not my cup of tea, I prefer the shinhan pass or schmincke designer gouache. It is a personal preference though but here is my two cents on it: If you want better quality try the designer gouache from winsor and newton or the schmincke. I think if you buy gouache, wich is less expensive then watercolor and is in most cases not ment to be light fast, dont go for a student set but go for an artist set as loads of brands have more affordable introductory sets wich do not break the bank but will increase your joy in painting with them. Another tip if you paint with gouache buy a tubewringer, so you dont kill your hands squeezing the paints out,lol
Great tips, thanks Aafke! :)
It's not student line, art creation is kids/scholastic. Van Gogh is their student line. A bit awkward to compare a scholastic line to a professional line..
@@demi3115 samething in my book...
I got some royal talens gouache for that learning to mix colors in gouache video I did a while ago, and they smelled NASSSSSSTY. Did yours smell gross, too?
I love that you hold your cats under the camera. =>.
Yeah, so far I haven't found a Royal Talens product that didn't STINK. I have no idea how they do it.
Pekoe on a magic carpet!! HAHA! "I can show you the world
Shining, shimmering splendid
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?"
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault ahaha! This is why you said it was funny I mentioned Aladdin. =>.
I have the schmincke hks designer gouache wich are pretty much odorless, I was basicly sniffing on that palette like a complete idiot - I never seen my husband laughing so hard- cause I know some people have allergies but love schmincke as a brand due to their good quality. The shinhanpass is odorless as well.
AquaDoodlesArt
I got some of the new Reeves rebranded packing gouache for my kids and that stuff stinks something nasty even after I added honey to it to prevent cracking in the palette and let it air out for a few weeks it still has a strong chemical smell to it.. I'm thinking of just trashing it cause of the smell as it gives my eldest headaches when he uses it.
Glycerine will do fine for that. But as for gouache it is intended to crack, even my schmincke one does, this is why you use small amounts at same time. Reeves is a bit chalky to the touch when dry. If you dont want cracking you should look for a hybrid gouache like a mijello or shinhan pass, though eventually even the shinhan will crack. That is what paint does when it dries, specially when you use a palette with drops.
a small comment
Much appreciated!
I loved this! I have this set and I've finally decided to revisit them.
Can someone help me out and link me to a box like the one in the video? My current palette is not the best tbh
I got mine on aliexpress, but you could also look for an icecube tray with a lid.
I had an entire set of gouache destroyed like that once in the exact same container by mould. I stopped using palettes of this sort.
Oh no, that's nightmarish :O
i think it's best if one uses the gouaches a lot, or daily, but yeaaaaah... Maybe not the best palette.
Did this brand have any funny smells to it? I noticed a lot of the talens art supplies I own have a pretty strong chemical smell to them...
Yes, it has that Talens signature chemical smell to it. Not as bad when the paint is dry, unless you put your nose really close to it.
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault
I hate that Talens adds some form of chemicals to their stuff to the point it stinks, I try to avoid their liquid products due to the chemical smell setting off my asthma.
royal Talens as we know make the great watercolour paints Rembrandt and some good student range paints but the art creation range which is a entry level range is not good....... tfs
I'm pretty sure Royal Talens is an artist grade gouache or at least a "designer" grade gouache, used to use them for illustration when I was an apparel designer. I remember them being creamier than Winsor & Newton, but don't recall trying to rewet them like watercolors. It looks like they did an excellent job of rewetting! Lovely painting, Eve!
this range is a starter range for watercolour, acrylic and oil paints..... its called art creation range and it is a beginners range.... I have had the watercolours and they a not good, royal talens do make good paints in pro and student range
Thanks for pointing that out, Ian! I missed that it was the beginner grade, thought it was the artist grade from the video title. Still they seemed nicer than most student grade, which can be very, very chalky. I've been thinking about trying gouache again, but will probably try the M Graham line if I do.
@everart okelli The M.Graham gouaches are excellent, they are really worth it. Sorry my title was misleading; the tubes I reviewed are indeed beginner grade, but the two jars are a better grade. And yes, I agree that these beginner gouaches are better than others I've seen!
@Ian Jackson Thanks for the precision, Ian! :)
No problem, I should have paid attention when you were showing the tubes :) I really appreciate the reviews.
That green is a little too bright!!
It's quite intense! :)
God I wish I didnt put my Talens tubes in my mijello palette. It rieks like something got killed with mold. I will be ditching my talens gouache for that reason later today. The smell is horrendous.
Yeah, they really smell awful. Royal Talens is the only brand that consistently has stinky paints in its tubes (I've tried Van Gogh watercolor, Rembrandt watercolor, and now this Art Creation gouache... Though the gouache is the least stinky.)
Cat pic=Subscribed
I see we think along the same lines XD
The question is:why do these paints have this chemical smell? Guess I will call Blick experts who are very helpful.
Which ones? The art creation ones?
I have the set of those and their professional line and I didnt encounter any strong or unusual smell.
eww mold is like my biggest fear!
Mold is NEVER great news, wherever it's found XD
@@EveBolt Except for when you need to feed springtails. I keep them in my snail tanks as a natural cleaning crew, and they love to eat mold, so I regularly let a couple of rolled oats get moldy just to give to them to make them extra happy.
