Nice to hear that you like Turner’s gouache. I’ve found it to be excellent quality and so cheap. In US, it’s available at Jerry’s Artarama. It sometimes goes on sale for $4.50 a tube! And those a big tubes. They have a great large range of colors too. Love the Light Blue and the Havana Red, Night Blue and so many more.
You know, my favourite thing about your videos, is just the very basic joy of watching someone enjoy an area that I love. North-East Scotland is such a peaceful area. The hills and forest we have bring me such joy. It's really nice to see it in paintings :)
PS. 🎉 I just found the Turner starter set in 🇩🇪 at Peter's Art online. 5x whopping 25ml tubes for €19.80. Idividual 25ml tubes fo €5.49. quite a decent deal (W&N are 6.5 € for 14ml). Only 5€ shipping. I will give these a try! Thanks again Sarah!
Oh that's good to know! I wonder if my prices are skewed since I'm viewing them from the UK, but when I looked at the Blick website they seemed more expensive there. Then again they are bigger tubes..
I didn't even know maimeri had gouache? the colours do look a lot more flat unfortunately, it's always super helpful when you do these tests for us so we can decide which to get 🥰
Thanks for this thorough review, Sarah!💛I love hearing your thoughts and insights. I love love love Turner designer gouache, surprisingly it's the most affordable option here in Canada! I find they do tend to have more binder separation than my other brands, but I give the tubes a shake and a little massage and the paint comes out lovely 😊
I am also curious as to where to find this Turner gouache in CANADA...probably out east...Toronto...Montreal or Halifax....love to know...if you get this comment.thanks
I love listening to you talk while watching you paint. It's so relaxing but at the same time makes me want to get my sketchbook out and play. I was born in Grantown on Spey but moved to New Zealand when I was 2 1/2, so it's nice seeing places that Mum and Dad have talked about all my life. If you're ever in my part of the world let me know. Our family has traveled a lot of this country and lived on both main islands, so we have a bit of useful knowledge between us.
This review makes me feel SO much better!! I’m in Canada, my local art store primarily carries Maimeri gouache (they have about 4-5 colours of W&N and have recently started carrying Daniel Smith, but it’s very expensive). Anyway, I thought I was doing something wrong because I had such a hard time getting the colour mixes I wanted with Maimeri or generally just using it. I don’t have enough experience with gouache to be able to determine if it’s a “brand” issue or a “me” issue. I think Maimeri watercolour is okay-ish, so thought I must be doing something wrong with the gouache (still a possibility since I don’t know how to work around its limitations).
That is always my concern, that someone without experience will assume it's their own fault that they are struggling so much. When in reality a lot of the struggle can come from the supplies. Of course, there's a requirement for practice no matter what you are using, but it's nice when the materials aren't fighting you! 😂 From what I've seen, some people LOVE Maimeri and others hate it. Just find a gouache the suits *your* style
Thanks for this Turner Design Gouache review and showing your amazing landscapes. Glad you mentioned the binder separation issue as the permanent light green, lemon, and orange were extremely watery out of my tubes and very hard to work with. But yes the other colors were fun to work with. Thanks again! ✨💜🙏🏾😘✨😮
I, too, have been disappointed in MaimeriBlu gouache - and their watercolors, too. You've helped me articulate what's aggravating about their gouache (so now I can begin to heal - LOL).
Great to see the Turner Design Gouache review. I got a set of 12 from Jerry’s here in the US because it was on an amazing “Super Sale” price around Christmas, but I haven’t played around with them much. I’m going kind of backwards with my gouache purchases, starting with the expensive artist quality gouaches and now buying some cheaper but popular ones. Have you tried the Turner acrylic gouache? I bought that before the Design gouache and loved it and kept buying more and more open stock. I found it “frustrating” in a way, though, because it is absolutely creamy and handles like regular gouache and I would forget that I was using an acrylic product until it dried fixed. I don’t think the Design gouache is quite as creamy (in my experience) but is nice.
Thank you for these reviews. I appreciate you sharing what you learn about these gouaches. It was nice to see you work with the gouache as well. I could see the struggle with the first one.
So glad you finally got to get your hands on some Turner gouache. I know you've been wanting to try them for a while. I've been using them for a while and love them. Great review and demo. Thank you for sharing. Beautiful painting as usual.
Oh I didn’t know MaimeriBlu had a Gouache paint. I do appreciate your sharing details & your thoughts on these additional brands of gouache too. Thanks for sharing this wonderful information with us!
Thanks for the review, Sarah. I've looked for Turner's here in Germany, but haven't found it...yet! At the moment I'm working with Lukas and Schminke. All the best!
That was a really nice relaxing video Sarah. I was just looking at Maimeri Blu Gouache only yesterday, thinking I would give it a go, but by the sounds of things, its not that good. The Turner Gouache did look effortless. You have convinced me to completely change my watercolours for Gouache , just so much easier to use than watercolours, thank you for that. 🙂
Maimeri Blu isn't gouache, it's their watercolor paint. Can't say yet if she's right about the gouache or not, her experience isn't in line with other reviewers at all, on the contrary. Whenever I watch Sarah and I'm sorry to say this, I get the feeling she's not the best reviewer there is and doesn't give some materials the proper chance they deserve.
Thanks for this review. I loved that beach landscape you painted. It conveys such a peaceful feeling. I could have it as huge print on my wall to help me relax while doing breathing exercises. Thanks Sarah! I was curious about Maimeri gouache, but after seeing you paint I would feel frustrated by the desaturation, lack of opacity and flexibility. You saved me some $$. I am also curious about Turner but it is hard to find here in 🇩🇪. Those colours seem so vibrant, opaque and easy to blend.
Hi Sarah! Thank you for all the great videos, I have found them super helpful! If you dont mind me asking, what would you think about making a comparison of the same color across brands? Ex - compare all primary yellows, compare all primary reds, compare all phthalo blues, etc
Hi Sarah, Love your gouache reviews and information. it's invaluable for us. I was looking for Windsor & newton gouache pigment information and noticed the colour charts on their website doesn't include which pigments are in their colours. Do you have any information on this or pointers to where to look? Other than the tubes since I want to know the pigments before I purchase the colours! Thanks much.
Wonderful review! Thanks so much for sharing this. I’m just learning about gouache and this was really helpful. It seems like there are so many crazy products on the market these days ..and you just don’t know what’s good and what’s bad until you spend the money to try it. Holbein is way too expensive for me to afford. However, the Turner is more affordable. I have ordered Turner and hopefully, I’ll step into the gouache painting arena with a little more confidence. Thanks again and have a great day!
Thank you for this review. I've wondered about both and now I know! I am currently on a no-buy for hopefully all of 2024, but Turner Design Gouache is on the top of my list for 2025!
Thanks for the work youve put into your database, are you to compare the gouche brands on temu (Maries and other non branded ones)? I.m a beginner and might try Meeden or winsor & newton student grade if they have it. Still researching! Interested to see Maries brand. Im an oil painter wanting to explore blending in gouche.
Great review! That's great to know the Turner design gouache is good! I love the acryl version. Have you tried it? Would be super interesting to hear your thoughts since I think you mentioned before that you prefer regular gouache over acryl.
Very hard to find Gouache brands in Australia. I think I know of 7, 4 of which you have reviewed. Daniel Smith, Winsor and Newton, Daler Rowney and Holbein. I personally have tried Art Spectrum, but found it really stringy. Sennellier, which I liked, but I couldn’t get local. I also found some of the colours less vibrant when compared to Winsor and Newton, but it was a great gouache to start on; very user friendly. My daughter now has my old set, is using them in her high school senior year and loves them. In the end I settled on Winsor and Newton, because it is easier to get, dries well in the palette and is vibrant. It is more expensive than AS, Sennellier, Mont Marte. About the same price as Holbein, but less expensive than others. Daniel and Smith and Daler Rowney are super expensive here, I just can’t afford to try them. I do wish I had more colour choices with Winsor and Newton, but I have enough to get a decent painting. I appreciate looking at your reviews, it is very generous of you. I often go back and look at them again. As an aside: what I like about Winsor and Newton gouache is something that you said when using Turner gouache is that I forget that I am using it, I just get lost in the process of painting and my mind isn’t even thinking about the medium. I love that about a good quality paint, when the medium just works so well you don’t even think about it.
Thank you for the review. I was looking to try the maimeri gouache as I love love love their Blu watercolours, but now I will likely pass. Lack of vibrancy is not my thing. But on the other hand, I might try the Turner, that I was not going to try.... :)
hullo Sarah, I will need to look again but I am looking for a DaVinci Paints of California gouache review. I know they are not widely available and not in the EU at all right now. Yet you have spoken of going to the states to visit, so you might know of them. I have watched a couple of videos but they are not well regarded. I LOVE the watercolors DaVinci makes and I have used their white gouache in some watercolor paintings, a newer experience for me, if I am honest! Have you considered trying them? Ok off to see what other brands you have done....
I don't use acrylic gouache much, just now and then. But here's a recent video about how I use it as an underpainting ua-cam.com/video/dbUrLbNIKNY/v-deo.html
I didn't realize Turner also made traditional gouache not just the arcyl gouache. I will have to remember that when I need to buy gouache again. Although that will be a while. I will be getting gouache all year from your sub box and I already have some M. Graham. ^_^;
Thank you for this review. I have a few tubes of Turner gouache and thought highly of them. I hope they have a good lightfastness rating. Does anyone know?
great video as always! super helpful as I was looking to get some turner gouache once I run out of my holbein colors. If you are able to get your hands on it, do you think you could try the "nicker poster color" or their Designer gouach varient? They're supposedly super famous for their use in ghibli movies, but I'd love to see how they handle in the hands of a non anime focused artist.
Hi, DaVinci makes my very favorite watercolor paint. But I find some of their gouache to be way too transparent. Particularly the color Hansa Light and Sap Green. The yellow is sticky and I just can’t use it even though I bought a huge tube. I love the Aliz Crimson and the Blues though
If the offer of the spanish gouache is open, I live in South Yorkshire in the UK and work in a heavily pastel colour palette in my sketchbooks as well as being a gouache artist. I'd gladly pay shipping and whatever else needed if you wanted to ship them to a new home they'd be heavily loved!
Have you tried Maimeri Watercolours? There's quite the hype around them and I just cannot believe that they are better than Schmincke, Winsor and Newton or Daniel Smith. But I am still curious and tempted to try them just to see what it's all about.
I think you would be disappointed by Maimeri overall, but their phthalo turquoise (PB 15:4) is gorgeous. Also, their tubes are only 12ml, so you get less product for the price. If you want bang for your buck, try Michael Harding. The pigment load is amazing and they dry nicely in pans. StiviWonders does beautiful videos comparing various colors across brands and most of those have a Michael Harding version.
love this review! it's short but clear why you (dis-) liked the brands so people know what to expect and if it's something they can work around :D Have you heard about Lascaux Gouache? They are a Swiss brand and while they use an acrylic binder they are rewetable like normal gouache. I'm not sure if they are considered artist or student grade though. probably student because they talk about using them in art classes on their website 🤔
Dang that's too bad about Maimeri, as it's the most accessible "artist grade" gouache to me, being Italian. But the difference in vibrancy is apparent even on camera, compared to Holbein. Although I didn't have a bad experience regarding fluidity, but I've mostly done small portraits so far, and all with a Zorn palette, and even though I like the results my experience is limited
I put a wax medium over my gouache paintings to make them glossy after I am done with them. Gouache also reactivates with water so you can use them like water color. Sara does lots of plein air paintings with gouache.
You can varnish gouache. I think even Maimeri makes gloss varnish for gouache. But I've seen people use all sorts of varnish for it. I think it's important to start with a few coats of spray varnish to 'set' the gouache before brushing varnish over it
Very odd Maimeri Gouache review, it seems like the gouache never really stood a chance against your bias towards it. Other reviewers are saying the opposite about it. It doesn't use dextrine or other cheap materials, that's pretty clear from their website. Can't say if it's good or bad yet, but it's on its way based on the high praises of some other excellent reviewers. I'm sorry to say this, but I've got this feeling with some of the other reviews you've done as well as this one.... some materials don't seem to get a fair chance at all.
People have different standards and once you've tried good materials it's inevitable you will see the the differences and what other materials lack. You can clearly see on the screen the pastely and chalky colors, as well as the extreme transparency uneven texture of the yellow. 😅 As for the reds, it's a weird choice of a "magenta" that loses it's vibrancy when it dries to set as a primary red. 🤔 It dries as a pastel pink.
@@letym2271 I bought a starter set with that according to weird magenta in it and it for sure doesn't dry pastel pink at all. Whatever she's doing with them, I don't know, but I get way better results with them. I've got Holbein Artist Gouache, Sennelier Extra Fine, Royal Talens Extra Fine, Master Class and of course Winsor & Designer. All good materials Last week the Maimeri Gouache test set arrived. In the past I had Arteza and Art Philosophy, the cheaper stuff. Since I love gouache, I want to pick a brand to build a larger collection with. After doing some paintings with all of the sets, I'm down to choosing between 3 sets. Holbein Artist Gouache, Sennelier Extra Fine and yes, Maimeri Extra Fine. They're all very pigmented, cover well, mix good and work great when diluted a lot and a little. Both is important for me. Maimeri definitely deserves a spot in the good stuff, since it's really nothing like she describes. After trying them, it confirms that the other reviewers, who aren't biased, were correct in stating it's a top brand.
@@letym2271 Tried good materials? Of course I have. I started out with the cheap stuff, Arteza and Art Philosophy to see if I would like gouache at all. Was sold right away. Upgraded to Royal Talens Extra Fine and Winsor Newton Designer. Nice stuff, great for designers, not for artists. So I bought some Sennelier Artist Extra Fine. Now that's the good stuff. A teacher recommended trying Master Class gouache by Nevskaya Palitra. Interesting stuff too, I've been painting for the last three months with it. Since I like to compare brands I got some Holbein Artist Gouache and last week Maimeri Extra Fine arrived. The Maimeri Extra Fine isn't anything like Sarah describes. The magenta doesn't dry as pastel pink at all. The yellow dried nice and even. No chalky colors at all. They can dry very flat, but also good for textured work and nuances. After trying them myself and seeing the other positive reviews, I'm even more convinced she didn't give them a fair chance and is quite biased. The paint is super pigmented and uses premium gum arabic. Good thickness, very consistent, works great watered down a lot and with little water. I want to settle on one brand and build a collection with it. I've got 3 brands left to choose from... Holbein Artist Gouache, Sennelier Extra Fine and yes, Maimeri Extra Fine. Not sure with I'm going to pick, I'm leaning towards Holbein and Maimeri, but I want to make a few more paintings with each of them first. Having said that and since you mention good materials, there's one brand that I still need to test.... Lascaux. That's the really good stuff. Reviews are very hard to find, but they don't need reviews. It's a brand that's being used for restoration of museum art. They've got some interesting things in their collection. Once those are in and tested, I'll make my final choice.

Maimeri Blu's watercolour is really good, I am surprised their gouache is not.
I would love to see a review of the Da Vinci gouache.
For some reason that one is super hard to get here
@@SarahBurnsStudioit’s made in California. I love it .
great video as always! super helpful as I was looking to get some turner gouache once I run out of my holbein colors. If you are able to get your hands on it, do you think you could try the "nicker poster color" or their Designer gouach varient? They're supposedly super famous for their use in ghibli movies, but I'd love to see how they handle in the hands of a non anime focused artist.
I have heard of the poster color but last time I checked it was super expensive!! And I am not a fan of painting out of tubs.
thank you so much for these reviews! Have you tried DaVinci Gouache? I didn't see it in your database, and have been curious about it.
No I can't get Davinci watercolor anywhere here
If the offer of the spanish gouache is open, I live in South Yorkshire in the UK and work in a heavily pastel colour palette in my sketchbooks as well as being a gouache artist. I'd gladly pay shipping and whatever else needed if you wanted to ship them to a new home they'd be heavily loved!
Email me! info@sarahburnsstudio.com
Thank you 🙏
Have you tried Maimeri Watercolours? There's quite the hype around them and I just cannot believe that they are better than Schmincke, Winsor and Newton or Daniel Smith. But I am still curious and tempted to try them just to see what it's all about.
No I have not
I think you would be disappointed by Maimeri overall, but their phthalo turquoise (PB 15:4) is gorgeous. Also, their tubes are only 12ml, so you get less product for the price. If you want bang for your buck, try Michael Harding. The pigment load is amazing and they dry nicely in pans. StiviWonders does beautiful videos comparing various colors across brands and most of those have a Michael Harding version.
love this review! it's short but clear why you (dis-) liked the brands so people know what to expect and if it's something they can work around :D
Have you heard about Lascaux Gouache? They are a Swiss brand and while they use an acrylic binder they are rewetable like normal gouache. I'm not sure if they are considered artist or student grade though. probably student because they talk about using them in art classes on their website 🤔
I saw that product but I'm not really interested in it
Hi Sarah could you do a review of Art Spectrum gouache…if you have access to it..please 😊
I love your gouache revoews. I would love to see your review of DaVinci gouache, but i do not know if there is a easy way to get it overseas.
No, it's almost impossible to get here, and I probably won't try it as it's infamous for being extremely transparent and that's totally not my thing.
Beautiful 😊❤
I once bought 3 tubes od metallic Maimeri gouache and they were very dry inside the tubes.
What about William Mitchell Liquid Gouache? I can’t find anything on UA-cam about this one.
I've never heard of it!
Does the Turner design goauche reactivate with water after it’s “dried out”?
Yes, it's traditional gouache, not acrylic gouache
Ooooh kindly send the Maimeri gouache to me! 😊
Dang that's too bad about Maimeri, as it's the most accessible "artist grade" gouache to me, being Italian. But the difference in vibrancy is apparent even on camera, compared to Holbein. Although I didn't have a bad experience regarding fluidity, but I've mostly done small portraits so far, and all with a Zorn palette, and even though I like the results my experience is limited
what about arteza?
I wish Gouache was made with Gloss finish...and also Gouache brush pens for plein air
I think it's important to start with a few coats of spray varnish to 'set' the gouache before brushing varnish over it
The Turner gouache and painting look great! The painting with the maimeri gouache looks very dull...
We can see right away on camera that it’s dull and chalky. The maimeri. 👍🏼🙂
Hallo, thanks for this video, i,am New to gouache and i watch all jour video,s i love it
Groetjes marieke ( sorry for mij poor englisch)
