  • Hello guys! I finally made the Royal Talens extra fine quality gouache review, my favorite gouache brand! Hope you enjoy!
I forgot to mention that Royal Talens sells this gouache in glass jar with 50 ml of paint, but I never found a place where I could buy them so my review is based on their tubes!
As well, Royal Talens sells a student grade line called "Art creations" which I've never tried before and I don't know if there is any quality difference, so my review is based on their extra fine quality gouache line!

It is an amazing brand and so pigmented and fantastic finish. I love these paints and was so glad I bought these. Their introductory set was pricey but I was delighted to use them and they actually helped me learn a lot about color mixing and color theory in general.

Gouache will not have an opacity rating because it is opaque by nature. It is interesting to see people using it in washes because traditionally it was never used that way.
There are a couple of ways of protecting your tubes. Always squeeze them from the bottom, and either make sure you have short nails or be conscious that lead tubes are so fragile they will pierce quite easily. If you want to move the paint up the tube smooth it upwards between the ball of your finger and thumb. This can happen with oil paint tubes as well, the cracking, and oils are way messier to deal with!
If you put your tubes cap down into about an inch of really hot water and leave them a little your stuck caps will loosen quite easily, but the best way is to wipe them well before capping, make sure to wipe the cap too.
I have some dried out Talens gouache colours that are 40 years old, a few of them were fine in the tubes till about 3 years ago! When I bought them they were the best available anywhere, and I have been surprised and very pleased they still are usable. Only one really will not rewet and that is a very strong magenta shade. These days I hand paint, but at the time I purchased them I only used airbrush, and these paints are really great for that, but of course a mask is needed. The paintings have to be looked after well because they have a wonderful smooth but very fragile surface, and out of sunlight they last a very long time.
Your work is really pretty, and delicate, and the review was great. So nice to see this brand still survives and people are enjoying it for its great qualities.

Thank you so much Lindy for taking the time and sharing your experience and tips with Royal Talens gouache!!
I've always wondered if a reason why I easily pierce my tubes is because of my long nails! My nails grows so quick that I have to cut them so often xD
But your advices to project my tubes were very helpful! Thank you so much for sharing your tips!! I appreciate it a lot :)
I'll keep them in mind! Especially from now on I will to my best to squeeze the paint from the bottom, which I don't often do!
Omg that's amazing... you have Royal Talens gouache colours from 40 years!! you definitely have more experience than me using Talens and knowing that out of sunlight paintings last a very long time, is reassuring.
I've been using this brand since almost 10 years and I keep my original paintings out of light to avoid possible colour fading, so far nothing happened!
I think generally speaking, it's best to avoid direct sunlight on paintings painted with any kind of art mediums to avoid colour fading and preserve the colours and painting's quality as long as possible!
I'm also very pleased to know you've been using this brand from a long time! Your message made my day! I'm always happy when other people are enjoying using the same gouache brand I use!! :)

I also like W&N gouache! but my favorite remains Royal Talens :) for handling the paint I don't find too much of a difference between the two brands but for example I prefer the greens and browns from W&N rather than Royal Talens, but RT has colours that W&N doesn't have, so for me it's more a preference of colours xD

  • @thanos8726
    @thanos8726 4 роки тому

I think i will buy more of these paint soon . i did some comparison with other brands that i already use like schmincke , W&N etc and this one are the most balanced line of gouche paints . I mean schmincke Horadam are totally lightfast, very pigmented and few colors are slightly better than talens but they are far more expensive . W&N designer gouche is overall pretty good , they have almost the same price than talens gouche but a lot of colors are not-Lightfast at all . Even in the set "introductory" they made you find 2 -3 colors that are fugitive . They have also "separation problems" in some colors . Talens is overall the most balanced gouche i tried not ultra-expensive but not cheap either with almost all the colors with decent light resistance and easy to find in the stores .
Gouche is kinda a strange medium btw .. a lot of famous brands sell gouache paints that are not lightfast at all. They say that these paint are made for designers works but overall the majority of people i know use these paint for fine-art and illustrations only and they need exclusively lightfast paints . Also some cheap brand i tried like nevraska palitra ,maimeri fine , arteza are not so bad for the price even in comparison to the expensive one ... A very unusual medium .

I agree with you, for the brands I’ve tried so far Royal Talens is also one of my favorite to use, they’re pretty affordable and I don’t have to worry about lighfastness since almost all colors have a good light resistance!
I also love W&N gouache because I find the colors way more vibrant compared to some colors of RT, but that’s true you have to check if the colors are fugitive!
Schmincke is one of the best quality for sure but I agree, it’s more expensive.
I also enjoy using Arteza gouache, and among other cheaper and affordable gouache I’ve tried so far, Arteza is one of the best in terms of price and quality, I only wished they would have a better light resistance!
Yeah gouache is a strange medium indeed, especially it can be tricky to use at first and maybe it’s the same for you but it’s one of my favorite medium for sure, I love how you can use this medium is so many ways for different style of paintings! :)

You mentioned you don’t understand some of the issues you have with coverage. You might check out discussions about granulation which is covered in videos about watercolours. (the same type of pigments are used for both watercolour & gouache). Colours that have high mineral content like raw umber will granulate. It is a reason to choose certain colours for certain subjects. For example, a granulating colour can be great for when you are painting a beach, a tree trunk etc, where texture is needed. Hope this helps

I'm still very new to gouache and have only used the winsor newton designer series up to now so it's interesting to see the differences between brands :) The colours in the royal talens look more natural too me and I especially liked seeing it painted onto black paper to show the opacity, that's such a good idea! I've just being trying to memorise that for my colours up till now so I'll definitely be making a swatch for future use :D
When you mentioned the metal casing cracking I had awful flashbacks of a set of old acrylics I had that exploded over my hand when I tried to get out the last bit of paint, this is the trouble when you just can't bare throwing out old paint! ;P
It's going to be interesting to hear your thoughts on the winsors, I'd love a comparison of the two if you get a chance :)

    • @sandraruberto8806
      @sandraruberto8806  6 років тому +1

It's funny because I've never paid attention on how opaque Royal talens gouache is and I've never did colour swatches of the colours I have until I made this review xD simply because I've been working with this brand from so many years that I know my gouache colours very well!
I've seen other gouache reviews on youtube where they swatched the colours on black paper, it was a great idea to show the opacity and covering of the colours indeed!!
I agree, RT colours look more natural and almost pastel-ish compared to W&N gouache, but RT still has bright colours!
omg I can imagine the mess you had when your acrylic tubes exploded over your hand! And I can relate, kinda because when the RT metals tubes break and the paint comes out from the small holes, it's a mess and I always have my hands covered in paint XD
Yess W&N is next! I'm working on it right now so I should be able to share the review for next week! I'm so excited!! :D

    • @JasmineToddIllustration
      @JasmineToddIllustration 6 років тому

That's so cool it's going to be really interesting to hear your thoughts :)
It's odd back in school we were taught the basics when it came to acrylics and watercolours but it was only in uni that I even came across gouache paints! I can't help but wonder if the thinking was 'if you can't get acrylics or watercolours down your going to struggle with this paint that's like a mix of the two' haha :D So I was wondering were they the first paint you were introduced too or was it a slow progression after learning with a different paint?
And ah the pain is real when it comes to broken paint tubes! I really liked how you decanted the paint btw I'd be interested to know how well and long they last in jars in comparison? It seems like a good way to save the last bits of paint, very frugal :D

    • @sandraruberto8806
      @sandraruberto8806  6 років тому

      Sorry for the late reply!
I remember during middle school I only used coloured pencils, but during my years at my art high school we used different painting techniques, I tried watercolour, gouache, ecoline and coloured pencils but not really acrylic!!
So I was introduced to different mediums but I remember I always liked more using gouache and coloured pencils!
But definitely it took some time to learn how to paint with gouache too :)
So far the gouache I put into the glass jars have hold up well! the paint is still moist after a good year since I put them into the jars! the only problem is that the paint becomes a bit smelly, at least when you open the jar, but hopefully I'll find a solution for that.
Exactly it's a very frugal option!! there is always some paint left inside the tube you can still use even though you squeeze all the paint out of the tube!
Actually, I just filmed the video on how to save dry gouache so I think I'll be able to share the video during August! I'm sure is going to be a helpful and interesting video for everyone! :D

i've used this brand of gouache and my brand new tubes leaked right away (it was the gum arabic ) and they do have a strong smell right out of the tube , for the same price i raser buy Linel gouache. but thanks for the review :)

Thank you for watching and for commenting!
That's interesting, my vermilion from Royal Talens is quite liquid as well but it doesn't leak so much. And my tubes don't smell so much, but you're not the first person who experienced a strong smell with RT gouache, but I don't know why and I would love to know the reason!
Maybe you can try to let your new gouache tubes take some air and leave them open for some time (like for half an hour or one hour) so that the paint will become more dense and it might won't leak anymore next time you open the tube! (and the smell might reduces too)
Linel gouache is from Lefranc & Bourgeois right?
I've tried this brand, the cheaper set not the Linel Fine line though, but the cheaper set was terrible and bad quality paint. But I would like to try their Linel fine, I'm sure they're better and good quality!

Yeah, the jars are cheaper (little harder to open sometimes, if you don't wipe off the rim), and they're quite clunky to carry around (especially to art school lol), and it's easier to contaminate the colors, but the quality between jars and tubes is the same.

Yeah definitely Royal Talens is an afforadble brand with good quality paint as W&N gouache! I still have to try other gouache brands to see their quality, there might be cheaper brands with good quality but but RT is a great alternative!
I'll definitely make the video to save gouache because I believe it will be helpful to more people! Thank you for commenting and for your interest! ;)
I'll get into details in the video but it's pretty simple actually, you just have to put your dry gouache into a glass bottle or glass jar with a closed cap, add little water to reactivate the paint to get a creamy consistency. Then keep your gouache completely closed and sealed so that air won't pass through and the paint will stay moisture!
As I said in the video RT tends to smell inside the glass jar (but I don't know why), I haven't tried to put W&N into glass jar yet but there shouldn't be any problems regarding the smell!
So far I only tried to add water which works fine, but for the video I'm going to try and add honey as well, it should work the same but I want to see if I can resolve the problem with the smell for RT!

Hi! Sorry I hope I understood right what you mean, for the first question: if you fill watercolor pans with gouache yes it might crack, not only with royal talens but also with other brands!
but no, the bottom layers don't erode when the paint dries and when you paint more layers on top! royal talens gouache is quite good quality and doesn't crack on the paper ^^ hope this helps and I hope I answered your questions!

Do you prefer talens or W&N or are they both similar?I love the W&N gouache, but I’m wondering, if they are similar, if it is worth buying RT as I’m on a budget.

I like them both! But Royal Talens remains my favorite :)
I find them very similar but I find W&N has a slightly better quality paint.
Personally, I prefer the greens and the browns from W&N rather than RT, they're brighter also when I mix them with other colours.
You may know W&N has different series with different prices, in my opinion the first 2 series are worth the money but definitely not the 4 series.
To me it depends on the colour itself, W&N has colours that RT don't have and viceversa, so depending on the colours you like using the most, you can always buy most colours from RT but try some from W&N to compare their difference ;)

Sandra Ruberto Thanks. From what you say, I’ll stick with W&N and just buy a couple of DT colours to extend my range. Thanks again 🙂

Great review. It lets you know that every tube is the same price and that there is zero pigment, opacity, or lightfastness info... All of those things point to a cheaply produced paint (that can be fine for illustration that you intend to scan) but not for art where the original work matters. Though the video is a positive review, It was great to see the honesty of its short comings, including how much more desaturated the pigment is compared to other brands. This way some people can buy it for what it is and avoid it if they are making work for sale or display that needs to be guaranteed lightfast over time. :)

Every tube or jar has complete lightfastness and pigment information, and most of them are perfectly lightfast. It's in the video too, actually.

@Agnieszka Varstadt exactly, thank you :) in the video I showed the informations about lightfastness and pigment of Royal Talens gouache!
Royal Talens indicates how many years the lightfastness of their colours is going to last, as I showed in the video. While for other gouache brands they do indicate the degrees of lightfastness but they don't say how many years it lasts...I would love to know this information from other brands too, so that I could understand if the lightfastness from RT is good or not!
I wouldn't say Royal talens is cheaply produced paint, they're pigmented colour and it's still good quality.
But yeah their colours aren't as saturated as other brands, but most likely it's because many brands add white to their pigment to artificially boost the covering power of their colours, so this might be the case for Royal talens.
But @hansendesigns, I see what you mean, so simply you have to be aware when selling original artworks. If you sell originals, it's best to use the best quality paint with the highest lightfastness! For me that I don't sell many of my original painting, and I scanned them most of the times, Royal talens works perfectly for me!

I think you need to improve your tube squeezing skills. Who squeezes tubes like that 🤣
