Making Poached Eggs with Siobhan Muir and Mr. SM

  • Have you always wanted to learn to poach eggs, but you didn't know where to start? This video gives you FOUR different ways to poach eggs that will give you options. True, two ways requires special equipment, but there are two that you can do with just the pans and bowls you have at home.
    1. Poach Pods
    Boil a large pot of water.
    Grease each poach pod with cooking oil. Crack an egg into each pod and place in the pot of boiling water. Cook for 4.5 minutes.
    Scoop the eggs carefully out of the pods onto a plate. If the pod fills with water, just drain over the pot and scoop egg out. Serve. Makes one egg per pod.
    2. Poach Plate
    Drop 1/2 tsp of water into each of the poach basins you're planning to use. If only using two, use the basins across from each other to cook evenly.
    Crack egg into the basins with water and add another 1/2 tsp of water on each egg.
    Place in microwave and cook on high for 30 seconds. Check and cook again on high for 15 second increments until the eggs are to the desired level of hardness. Scoop out onto a plate and serve. Makes up to 4 at a time.
    3. The Swirl Technique
    In a small pot of boiling water, add a little salt and 1 tsp of white vinegar. The vinegar helps hold the egg together, and you won't taste it when the egg is cooked.
    Using a spoon or a chopstick, stir until you make a decent vortex/whirlpool, then drop the egg into the center of the vortex. Let it roll and boil for 4 minutes.
    Using a strainer or a slotted spoon, scoop out the egg onto a plate. You can only make one egg at a time using this method.
    4. The Glass Bowl Method
    Like the Poach Plate, drop 1/2 tsp of water into a microwave safe glass bowl. Crack egg into the bowl and add another 1/2 tsp of water.
    Place bowl in the microwave and cover with a small microwave safe plate or lid. Cook on high for 20 seconds. Lift the lid and check, then cook for additional 5-10 second intervals until the egg is at the desired level of poached.
    Scoop out onto a plate. Makes only 1 egg per bowl.

    I usually make my poached eggs in one of my ceramic dishes that has a fitted lid, but I only have two left. Ordered one of those microwave ones from Amazon.

      Yes, and we gave two microwave options, but you need to be careful they don't explode in the microwave.
