Taryl, when it comes to passing on knowledge about repairing all sorts of small engine driven machines you are "The Man". You have the best site by far when it comes to passing on how to repair and troubleshoot this equipment, so much better than anything else on the internet. You make the manufacturer sites look like kindergarten and you have fun showing us to do the repairs. There is nothing like a man with the knowledge and practical experience to teach someone how to do something. Keep up the good and fun work!
I’m on my 2nd 24 hp Briggs & Stratton engine. Until I watched your channel the John Deere dealer won’t even look at either machine because of bent push rods. I viewed your other video on V-twin Briggs engines and ordered a new head and push rods. I did the work and saved a $3000 mower with a new $200 dollar head thanks to you. Much appreciated, Taryl.
Taryl, you're the man! I've watched countless videos of yours. They are very fun and informative. You have helped me through a lot of my mower issues. A true master! THANKS!
I have learned about Kohler Command engines which I have a 16 horse power. I own a Dixon 4516 and she is pretty good for grass cutting. I've recently tuned it up with a gas filter, air filter kit, a spark plug, and four tires. Could use blades, belts, and pulley's looked at too. Your videos are A+ #1 for us do it yourselfer's. You have a unique sense of humor and a host of loony tune folk to pull it off. Kudos to Taryl, Taryl Jr., Slippers, and crew for a good time had by all.
You can see hard work, years of experience, great tutorial much knowledge, love watching your videos sir, I never waste my time with other so called mower videos by others, you are the only one we go to, thank you Mr cameraman tyral and entire family, and where's RONNIE, HES perfect! Great villan, thanks tyral for your time and bringing us to you and what you do, GOD BLESS YOU SIR
This one had me laughing out loud so much, my son left his video games (darn miracle) to come see what was going on. Taryl & the crew just keep getting better and better. My favorite channel by far. Little Johnny for "employee of the month"
I can sit here and watch your very informative videos and learn a lot from your experience as a repair dude. Thanks for taking my mind to a really fun place.
On any gravity feed fuel supply, i always install a tap and let the engine run itself out of gas then switch it off. The needle/seats in any fixed carb will eventually weep/leak and fill the crankcase even with good servicing; better to be safe and isolate the fuel supply. Plus as Taryl says, the new fuel with ethanol can be caustic on lines ect and little weed whackers, so i always empty the carb before turn off as they sit for a while and mowers too. Its the little things you can do that will make small engines so much easier to use and less headaches. Great Channel, best out there as he gives so many ideas and tricks to help the home user service his mowers.
Great idea, I always do the same with my JD riding mower, after cutting I shut the fuel valve and drive it to the shed with the fuel that remains in the bowl, by the time I get there it runs the carb dry and I store it till next time with a dry carb. Never have any problems doing it that way.
My 2007 craftsman 46 inch has been mowing my 2 acres roughly every 10 days or so for 12 years. It does more than mow for me, it pulls down dead timber, drags logs and hauls my loaded down garden trailer all over the place. That 540cc briggs intek has been a work horse and is still going strong. I've definitely gotten my moneys worth from that little red tractor.
Taryl, you are so good! My mommer's John Deere has the Intek engine with the plaskit plentum. Twice now, the old gas has gummed up the carbitrator wear the sillinoid shuts off the gas. There is a white plaskit plug that the sillinoid pulls back to let the gas in, but when it's gummed up, it just sets there. She'll run all day if yore spraying carb cleener in, but just won't run on her own till you free up that plaskit thang operated by the sillinoid. You know, I used to think the Krohler engines was the cat's pajamas, but I see now you've had all kinds of truble with 'em. Keep up the good work my friend. You are a Small Engine Superhero in my book!
Your knowledge astounds me! You have the best, most informative videos on UA-cam by far! Your helpful information is always appreciated! I would take my equipment to you for repairs in a heartbeat! Keep up the great work!
Taryl, You are a wealth of knowledge, and a comedian all rolled into one. Always great videos. Thanks for taking the time to share your hard earned knowledge with us mere mortals.
ii have been messing with small 2 and 4 stroke engines forever; what a treat to see a professional share info on what can be a very intricate problem. i learn things from you all the time.
Great and informative video Taryl, thanks for sharing the most common lawn tractor engines and showing their most common problems. The little Johnny bit was hilarious! The Briggs opposed twins are my favorite lawn tractor engines.
Taryl, you crack me up singing that old Nikki Sixx song "Junk, Junk, Junk" but you are so right. Excellent job covering all the common problems on lawn tractor engines.
This guy is on the money every time!!!!!! I do a lot of small engine work for friends and a past time and Taryl is my go to guy!!!!! Skits are very funny too!!!!
Thanks so much! Good advice when buying a mower so you know how much you have to spend or how much time you have to invest on an engine. And that should say something when Taryl says “I don’t have any Kawasaki’s here”. Great engines, love them as a pro landscaper, absolutely the engine to have.
The best part of these Kawasaki engines is the noise dampening of the water jacket! I own a water cooled, JD LX178, and I go to mow my mom's lawn with her Cub Cadet with the air cooled Courage and wow is it loud! I'll never own an air cooled tractor!
I really appreciate that you guys don't spare any expense on your costumes and disguises, I never recognize any of you except the tall good looking one.
I just want to say thank you I've learned so much from watching your Channel.I acquired skills that I now have for the rest of my life that I can take anywhere. Thanks again your friend from Canada🍁
@Wheel bearing you are correct. liquid cooled engines are far easier on engines so if youre testing an oil a small engine is the best option. ✌ much love from st louis MO
Taryl you and your videos are awesome. Great information and wonderful humor. I wish the history channel would give you a spot like Counts customs. It would be a hit I’m sure. Thanks for all your hard work on making your videos.
The best entertainment in it's class. You're the best Taryl. I'm already a subscribed fan and I know I can come here for good information and a few laughs at the same time. I actually have one of these engines and I'm having the problems on it that you've mentioned. Of course, I've found answers on your other videos. Thanks for the dinner!!!
Mechanic couldn't fix my loss of power issue on twin Kohler Courage. Your tip on valve clearance directed me to the problem. They need to be adjusted after the first 200 hrs. I was at 470. Thanks Taryl!
MAN, YOU ARE DOING WHAT THIS WORLD NEEDS RIGHT NOW-"OPEN SOURCE EVERYTHING". AS WE SLIDE INTO ANOTHER CENTRAL BANKER CAUSED DEPRESSION, YOUR APPROACH TO SHARING A LIFETIME OF KNOWLEDGE WILL HELP MILLIONS OF AMERICANS KEEP THEIR EQUIPMENT RUNNING-AND WE'RE GOING TO NEED OUR GEAR TO SURVIVE...GOOD ON YOU.
Great review. I would add that high hour opposed twin Briggs and Stratton tend to have failure on the top connecting rod. They seem to starve for oil a little bit and over time, they 'self machine' the top con rod bearing journal at the crankshaft and break the connecting rod. This has happened to lots of them and the same has happened to me.
It is great to see things from the view point of a seasoned mechanic with years of experience who sees engines as groups of engines with the same reoccurring problems. Nice to know the good one and the bad ones. THANKS
16:20 Conversing with briggs tech line, as im a tech and I'm allowed to, I was informed that the inteks should have a head gasket retorque after a few heat cycles. But you wont really find that in a service book.
Fire it up fire it up! That little Johnny needs some serious mentoring ship up grandpa‘s OK. Thanks for all the tips on the common problems in lawn tractor mowers! I love your videos
Really dig your videos man I'm a small engine mechanic also but still like to watch and learn. Did y'all ever have the issue with the first generation intek that had the latching air filter cover.. when I in high school I worked for a shop an they were coming in every day with a blown engine from dirt ingestion with really low hrs briggs recalled those after replacing a bunch of engines
Excellent video Taryl👍 Always good to know which engine brands are good and which ones are garbage! I personally like any of the briggs single cylinder flathead engines. Very reliable engine hassle free and user friendly. 👍👍
This video helped me diagnose my B&S 10 hp problem. It was running like the governor wasn’t working. You mentioned the screws on the butterfly plate of these engines can loosen. Loosen? Heck, both of mine were missing and the plate was sucked into top of the head! I fished it out with a magnet and it’s pretty dinged up but no chunks of it are missing. Thanks again for an entertaining and accurate video!
I've got one of those Briggs 18 hp opposed twins. Came in a Lowes riding mower I bought new in 1995. It still runs good but just started leaking oil. I've got it on the bench now changing out the sump gasket and oil seal. I couldn't tell exactly where it was leaking from so I bought a whole gasket set and will change as many as I can. I also got a carb rebuild kit. The only thing I've had to fix in the past was a new Bendix for the starter. I mowed grass with it up until a year ago when I bought a new JD. The Lowes mower doesn't have a time meter, but I estimate I've put around 400 hours on it since 1995.
I've been sub'd for a couple years now, and I'm always glad when a new video comes out. I must say, I was also glad you got so busy you couldn't make as many videos, because I always enjoy seeing someone's (legal and useful) business succeed. I hope you made a ton of money! Taryl, you're a nut. Excellent entertainment mixed with useful information. How can you go wrong? Now, there's your dinner. Keep on doin' what you do. Why you don't have 200K subs by now is a complete mystery. I firmly believe you will.
Well I'm glad I got a Intex......... Where the valves get rammed through the head every place with a gasket leaks carburetor fills up the oil sump.. Utterly thrilled now
Spot on Taryl. Love the videos, very helpful. Its just like Christmas when I see you post a new video. Thanks for all the tech info. I work on small gas engines in retirement for something to do and to make a little cash.I don't run a business, mostly helping friends and neighbors. Fluffy might make YOU money, but Taryl's videos make me money. I wish I had your knowledge. Thank you very much for your work.
This right here is years and years of blood sweat and tears that no book can teach you. I am glad some of the newer generation kids have interest. We are slowly losing our welders... Engine mechanics are next
Watching this video again. This is one of my favs. Taryl should do a 2024 version. I feel like a lot has changed. Most of those engines seem obsolete to me now.
Just had the carb issue with the briggs single cylinder engine. Bought 2 chinesium carbs. (nikki knockoffs) surged like crazy. Found a walbro aftermarket (nimtek). Runs like a charm.
Lol. Very informative videos for anyone that enjoys servicing and maintaining there lawn tractors. I have a JD LA145 that's already 15 yrs old with only 130 hours but all these tips from Taryl are key to saving some cash and preventative maintenance.
"Why does hard work smell like the outhouse..........?" I laughed so freaking hard. I have no idea why I thought that was funny, but I couldn't breath I was laughing so hard.
I have one and it seems to stop working over winter sometimes. Last time I literally just took it apart, found nothing obviously wrong with it (spotless), then put it back together and it worked perfectly again. Voodoo.
The beginning of this video, caused me to have a aneurysm. (I had someone do a little johnny to one of my riding lawn mowers) Also, how do you have so many riding lawn mowers? do people start to repair them, and then just dump them on you or something? Wow... little johnny... that turned into nightmare mode at the end. Cool video. Thanks for doing it! I got a old White MTD 1855 given to me, & it has a 18 B&S Vanguard on it.. glad to know that's a reliable engine. Looking at the shroud that surrounds it, its no surprise about mice nest..
Taryl and Junior and Slippers ROCK...…. these dudes are damn GOOD! Watched with my girlfriend and busted out laughing with viper spit just like little Johnny... You guys are GOOD...…...better than most Hollywood comedy for sure.
probably because, sadly they are mostly likely almost extinct. kohler K series is probably the most common today. they were used on IH cub cadet, older john deere, wheelhorse…… tons and tons of machines
Thanks Taryl for entertaining me this morning , common problem I run into is spraying my coffee all over the kitchen laughing my ass off at these videos !
Wow. I must be the lucky one! I have an '03 18.5hp Intek single that runs great. I also recently picked up (twofer with the one above) a '96 20hp Intek V-twin with the Nikki carb and metal intake that had been sitting for *ages.* No knocks, no valve cover leaks, no head problems. Just mucked out the float/needle/seat and it purred like a kitten. Well, until a kill wire diode took a dump.
Oh you do crack me up! How am I supposed to fix my mower when I just keep giggling? You are so much more fun than an 8 year old oil guzzling Kohler Courage twin cylinder engine. And I have learnt so much from your videos. Thank you! Sarah (60 yr old Aussie girl farmer)
Love ya, ya goof! You're right on, just one that I've seen a lot, on the Briggs horizontal opposed twin they break the plastic oil slinger, then sieze the top connecting rod, thanks again!
This may be related to the oil pan bolts coming loose on the Kohler courage but I've seen a lot of these engines where the counter balance blows through the rear of the block.
Why doesn't Taryl have his own time slot on cable t.v.? I mean funny and educational! Should be on Motor trend network or Velocity channel. Until then I get my fix on the you tubes!
Another great video! I kinda wish I hadn't watched this though since now I expect my 10 year old single cylinder Intek to blow up in the middle of the night, in my garage, while I'm sleeping and burn my house down. Back when I was stupid (just earlier today) and didn't know it was a crappy engine it's run flawlessly for more than a decade but now, thanks to you educating me, I'll be lucky if it doesn't kill me by week's end. On the bright side I called my wife and told her Taryl said I should get a new mower. She said "who the hell is Taryl?". I know, I know, I'm embarrassed too. I tried explaining the whole UA-cam super star thing to her but I don't think she was listening.

Fluffy might make YOU money, but Taryl's videos make me money. I wish I had your knowledge. Thank you very much for your work.
Cool, would love a video on converting something like a generator motor to propane LP gas vs gasoline.
This right here is years and years of blood sweat and tears that no book can teach you. I am glad some of the newer generation kids have interest. We are slowly losing our welders... Engine mechanics are next
and not a single honda,
Yes I was thinking the same
I was thinking that too - and also that they might be too expensive for the typical big box stores to be putting on their lawn tractors.
Or hondas don't have problems and are the best
Found the honda 34:13 on the left
@Philippe Blondeau seems to be the vanguard
true, although they haven't been made in 20+ years so they aren't really common anymore.
Man!!!! ThankYou so much for pointing those "common issues" with all different brands of Engines~! no B.S. just cut to the chase~!! :-)
Excellent information Taryl. Thanks.
Thanks a million! The surging after rebuilding the Niki 6 on the Briggs Intek was driving me crazy! Thanks again.
"Why does hard work smell like the outhouse..........?"
I laughed so freaking hard. I have no idea why I thought that was funny, but I couldn't breath I was laughing so hard.
You vids are the best!!! Very informative and funny at the same time... Have been watching for years and still will watch when I can
Yep those Nikki six carburetors are still on smack.
Another good video guys.
I have one and it seems to stop working over winter sometimes. Last time I literally just took it apart, found nothing obviously wrong with it (spotless), then put it back together and it worked perfectly again. Voodoo.
The beginning of this video, caused me to have a aneurysm.
(I had someone do a little johnny to one of my riding lawn mowers)
Also, how do you have so many riding lawn mowers? do people start to repair them, and then just dump
them on you or something?
Wow... little johnny... that turned into nightmare mode at the end.
Cool video. Thanks for doing it!
I got a old White MTD 1855 given to me, & it has a 18 B&S Vanguard on it.. glad to know that's a reliable engine.
Looking at the shroud that surrounds it, its no surprise about mice nest..
Great video thanks
I hate to tell you Taryl, but , little johnny/slippers carries the comic portion of these videos, he is solid acting gold !
Taryl is the best. Can't wait till the next one
Who else just comes here for the entertainment value only 🤣
Taryl and Junior and Slippers ROCK...…. these dudes are damn GOOD! Watched with my girlfriend and busted out laughing with viper spit just like little Johnny... You guys are GOOD...…...better than most Hollywood comedy for sure.
That was great, thank you.
You dident talk about the cast iron Briggs, single cylinder, work horses..
probably because, sadly they are mostly likely almost extinct. kohler K series is probably the most common today. they were used on IH cub cadet, older john deere, wheelhorse…… tons and tons of machines
Thanks Taryl for entertaining me this morning , common problem I run into is spraying my coffee all over the kitchen laughing my ass off at these videos !
Old school Briggs & Stratton is the way to go 👍
Wow. I must be the lucky one! I have an '03 18.5hp Intek single that runs great.
I also recently picked up (twofer with the one above) a '96 20hp Intek V-twin with the Nikki carb and metal intake that had been sitting for *ages.*
No knocks, no valve cover leaks, no head problems.
I have watched this a few times over the past couple years!
Why doesn't Taryl have his own time slot on cable t.v.? I mean funny and educational! Should be on Motor trend network or Velocity channel. Until then I get my fix on the you tubes!
The tv people would so much restriction on what Taryl could say do, etc. Essentially, he would be the hand puppet.
Outstanding !! Good timing wearing that "Open " hat !!! Who's going to win ?? David already got a 13 on #7
"Time da soyvice gwampa's mowa" LMAO!

You're out standing outside of your lawn mower shop because Taryl you are outstanding.😮 How'd you like that line? Lol lol lol 👍👍......
Best one yet, johnny the proctologist.
Awesome!! Cracked me up!! Keep em coming Taryl and Crew
I'd like to see more on onan engines.
You mean Boat Anchor 🤣
Thanks for the laugh, buddy-I needed it!
Your channel is Great.....thanks for being on line. Keep up the good work!!
Love the ending! LOL
You’re very knowledgeable and you really know how to deliver
