    I have talked to a few orchid growers and one said cattleyas are very fussy about humidity. Another grower said to try a catesetum. So they had completely different advice. But your advice seems the most convincing! So I am going to try them all! Why not. I have a very bright space in my home that has indirect sunlight, but in Utah we have very low humidity. I will try to report back which orchids end up doing the best in Utah. I have several phalaenopsis that have been reblooming. What has helped the most is letting them soak up to the brim for 10 minutes, then draining well and doing it every time the bark gets dry. So weekly in summer and 10-12 days in winter. Sometimes they get 2 or 3 oz. of water in between the soaks if it has been extra hot or dry but making sure the pot is not sitting in water. I have not had issues with humidity as much as underwatering, but it took me a while to figure it out. The method of putting ice cubes in for watering did not work well at all. At least in Utah that was very bad advice (it was on the label when the orchids were purchased). All of your videos are very well done, thanks for taking the time to make them. I have watched several and have learned a lot.

      Hi, don't worry about Catts, they come from very dry, drought striken habitats. Just make sure you watch my begginer tutorial on them, they have their soft spots too, particularly regarding repotting. Good luck!

    Thank you so much for making this video. I’ve been wanting to expand my Orchid collection beyond Phalaenopsis. I’ve looked online so much trying to figure out what other orchids I can own successfully. You solved my problem in just a few min. Thank you! Thank you for this video! I live in a desert state (southern Nevada) and I was always hesitant about obtaining more species of orchids because I wasn’t sure I could provide them with the humidity they need. This video has helped a lot. I’ll be looking into cattleyas now :)

      I also live in a desert climate. Thinking🤔it's what median we use in this arid climate. Mine are growing great in NZ spag moss layered in a bit of crushed bark.

    • @S17-l4d
      @S17-l4d 4 роки тому

      For our climate, sphagnum moss is definitely the way to go if you want to preserve some moisture, so it sounds like you’re doing good. Also, a humidifier may help too. I have a zygopetalum growing right next to my humidifier and it’s pushing out a new bulb :)

      @@S17-l4d yes, agreed! Spag moss and I run a humidifier all day long in my plant/orchid room turning it off at night cause ac doesn't run much right now at night. 50-60% humidity at all times. Our house humidity is much lower at about 36% only. Not familiar with zygo's.

    I live in Manta, Ecuador, which is on the Pacific coast. I have two bare root vandas that I dunk in a bucket twice a day. The two cattleyas, one oncidium, one phalenopsis and two dendrobiums are watered when the moss looks dry on the outside. I try to mist those every day. They are all outside, mostly in the bright shade as the sun is so strong here and it is considered an arid region. There are an abundance of orchid varieties in Ecuador. I buy from a company in Guayaquil because they grow there well, so will grow where I live. I appreciate all your info to help with my orchids. Thanks.

    Danny! I love your videos. I can just watch a bunch of them in a row. I am a budding orchid lover. I started with 3 phalaenopsis orchids...2 are kinda okay still have green leaves, but also lost some leaves and experienced root rot due to overwatering, and 1 orchid is thriving still after a month but because i have all the supplies necessary (aerated pots and bark medium, the other two had moss mediums and got watered too frequently. I enjoy your insight with taking care of these gorgeous plants. LOVE IT! thank you so much for your videos

    So awesome! If you live in coastal California, you need to watch this video. Especially Los Angeles. You can grow some killer Catts in LA.
    You can actually find Laelias, Cattleyas and Vandas that can live outdoors through the winter in Mediterranean climates. Like Laelia anceps or Vanda coerulea. You could mount them on trees, etc. Youre not just limited to Cymbidiums! I've had a Brassolaelia and a couple Zygonisias make it through the winters here in Silicon Valley.
    Have you tried to keep any of your orchids outdoor year-round?

      Some of the Australian dendrobiums also do crazy well here in the mild winters and hot summers of California. I'm in the San Joaquin valley, but in a zone 10 area, so the temperatures are about the same as in LA. Also, I know they're technically part of the broad cattleya alliance, but Encyclia orchids do super well for me in low humidity, and I feel like they're often forgotten because they tend to be a little smaller and less well represented for sale, which is unfortunate because their smaller size makes them great for windowsill culture.

    In my apartment currently (19 November 2022, Canada), the indoor temperature is 22.5°C, and the humidity is 19%. I obtained a Phalaenopsis in September and tried to keep it going, but it's on its last legs, and the drop in humidity in my apartment from 75% to 19%, hasn't helped. With the high ceilings, a little humidifier isn't going to help.
    It's the only orchid I've ever had, and I wasn't anticipating how the extremely low humidity would affect it. So now I'm looking for an easy-care alternative. If that doesn't work, I'll just stick with my in-soil houseplants. Really hoping to have success with at least one orchid, though.

    These orchids are tolerant and can thrive in low humidity but if you offer them higher humidity would they also thrive? I live in San Francisco and we have a foggy marine climate. Unless it’s sunny and hot it’s nearly impossible to dry your clothes outside. That’s how much water vapor is in the air. We also stay around 18 Celsius all year round. Thanks for all your wonderful videos!

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  4 роки тому

      Hi, yes higher humidity is great fir all orchids, but it needs to be associated with fresh air and warm temperatures! Cold temps and stale air plus high humidity promote mold and rot on any orchid! You seem to have great temperature though, so watch for stale air 🧡

    Hi Danny, what are your thoughts on using organic fertilizers like alfalfa meal, cotton seed meal, fish meal, blood meal, bone meal, soybean meal, rock phosphate, or greensand?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  4 роки тому

      Hi, I don't feel comfortable using products that have elements which need to biodegrade in order to become available to plants. Orchid pots are very airy, they dry regularly and are nowhere near as biodiverse as a compost pile, for healthy and complete decomposition in my opinion, so I exclusively use processed fertilizers. Also I think many organic fertillizers are not vegan, so again I don't feel comfortable using animal products for a non essential part of my life that doesn't affect my health. My personal choice is to not use them ☺️
