Hi Duong. If you make a mold for casting copper you need to do 2 holes in that mold instead of one. First is for pouring melted copper and the second hole is for making an air outlet. If you will not make a 2nd hole then whole copper will be splatter out of the mold due to the air displacement from the center of the mold. Moreover your material will be more pourus due to the air trapped inside of it.

@@PrimitiveSkillsnetalso, if you make the pour hole higher than the air hole it will push the air out more easily and you will be less likely to get big bubbles of trapped air. You can do this easily by getting a short piece of bamboo packed with sand and then making a hole through it and placing it on top of the mould. You can also scoop some of the sand out to make it more like a funnel.

Try heating your mold before you pour copper into it, this'll help to dry the sand out and reduce the risk of the mold failing due to expansion of heat that is trapped in the sand.
Once the mold is heated, test it by dripping some water on the top outer edge, if the water turns to steam immediately you should be okay to pour the copper in.
The finer your sand is, the smoother the final product will be.
    Great job

You succeeded in making a bowl of copper. Very few people can claim the same success. I would like to see a hammered copper bowl. Usually the molten metal is poured into a plate form and then hammered into the bowl shape. I just happen to like the hammered look. 👋👍👍👍👍👍

The reason the mold failed is because of the water in the earth you used to make the mold. The moment the molten copper hit's the water in turns to steam and it blows up. I think you'd be better off using sand and perhaps some kind of oil to hold the sand together.
I love what you do. It's fascinating to be able to observe the whole process!
    Thanks again.

Try mixing some clay in with the dirt, just enough so that it will hold together. I have poured molds using green sand Which is dirt and green clay mixed together with the right amount of water. And I have made molds using an oil Sand mix. The oil sand mix works best if you can get it, however, be careful opening the mold right away as the oil will flash burn on you.

Judging from what i saw at 31:33, the material you used for the mold may have been wet. Whenever any molten material, lava or molten metal, comes into contact with water, the result is always the same. The molten material causes any water, however little, to flash to steam which is why i believe your molten metal started fountaining like that. It generally helps to make sure the material is dry and to pre-heat your molds before pouring metal inside.

I think if you add a little quicklime to the copper before removing from furnace it helps clean the copper and helps it cast a little better. I'm pretty sure it can be used as a flux in this way.
Great video as always and congratulations on your first casting!

  • @unusualfabrication9937
    @unusualfabrication9937 11 місяців тому +10

Very impressive! going from native copper and ore to a finished cast product is no easy feat. make sure your molds are dry, as water in a mold will instantly turn to steam and explode, like what happened to the first attempt. also, as others have said, the second hole as in the successful casting is very important as it lets the trapped air escape

I think that this is called "teaching by deliberate failure"... Both the use of wet soil and no air-hole.
More teachers should use this method.

Sand mound was too wet. You want sand not dirt. Add a small amount of saw dust and clay and very little water. You want just enough clay to coat every grain of sand. The sawdust will absorb the water and the result overnight is tempered casting sand. Also. Spruce funnel, gates and risers ( to feed metal to all parts of mound and to free the air ahead of oncoming molten metal). 👍👏

Hello, Duong! Your videos are very interesting and inspiring to watch! But can i give you some simple advices?
First: Try chop the vegetables into small pieces before feeding the animals and chickens. In our village we used for this a shovel with flat sharp blade. It's 5-10 minutes of work and small pieces of vegetables becomes more jucy and smells more tasty, so animals eat them with much better appetite. Long time ago i chopped vegetables wright in the the solid-wood trough, and then take it to pig(or chicken) house, so they can eat from trough, not just from the floor. And it's more comfortable to feed animals(or give them water) from the trough.
Second: Your are hard-working a lot of time, but working with a comfort is very important. Try to craft and use simple frame chair(for example, made of bamboo) with ergonomic back and more solid table for work(from half of log) to take care of your own back. Belive me, your back will "say thank you" for that very much.
Third: Please, don't cut anything by the iron knife or axe on the hard stones, it will make you tools blunt very quickly. Wooden table will save you a lot of time wasted on re-sharpening them. To cut the metal use more solid chisel and a hammer.
I wish you luck with your projects and a good health!
