How to connect Weber Genesis II Natural Gas Connection - DrB DIY

DIY connection of Weber Genesis II grill with a natural gas 3/8" quick connect a hose to a new home natural gas 3/4" pipe. The Weber 2 grill was purchased in 2020 from Home Depot. Black pipe parts were purchased at HD also. A single adapter was nit in stocks.

Pipe fittings are tapered. The tighter you get the joints the more closer to each other the threads become. You do not need both pipe tape and pipe dope. Their only purpose is to seal any minuscule irregularity that might be present and to lubricate and prevent seizing of the threads against each other when fully tightened which will make them easier to disassemble should that be necessary.
Don't need both. But we usually use both as a practice.
Which do you recommend? Tape or Dope?

Teflon tape works well but it has to be wrapped in the proper direction or the tightening fittings will pull it off and create the very gaps you want to seal, that and if you put too much on you risk cracking the fittings.
The dope is a paste, which I find easier to put on because it does not matter what direction you apply it, and you do not have to worry about it tearing and you can be certain that it will flow into and fill the threads as they are tightened with any excess squeezed out.

Thank you for this video. I have a new construction build and just got a Weber spirit NG Grill. This helps a lot. BTW after the gas Teflon tape, what is that stuff you put on the treads over the Teflon?
You can use pipe thread sealant or pipe dope or similar.
Nice Video. One thing to mention. Try to avoid using a bushing to connect to your gas supply. Most states don't consider a bushing up to code for this type of application. A bell reducer would be the better option.

Thanks for the video. My home uses LP. Would the reducing couplers and fitting be the same or do I need to use NPT?
Its all pipe threads. You may find a one piece coupler also, but for us they were sold out.
did you change the orfice? sometimes they come with the propane one
No, this is natural gas at the house and grill. The store usually carries a one piece adapter, but the adapter wasn't in stock.
I think it needs more pipe dope!

Thanks. Exactly what I needed. Except my connection from my home is already a female fitting meaning I don't need that wide black round shaped fitting. I have an 1/2 inch plug, which I would assume that means the line coming from my home is a 1/2 inch fitting and would require a double sided 1/2 inch fitting or whatever size my quick connect hose would be.
Just curious what's the reason you used that small little black ring ? To downgrade or upgrade the size to accommodate the other fittings? Cam I technically use the double ended threaded pipe going directly into my line from my home to my quick connect hose? Or shall I put the small black nut you put? As well am I supposed to use yellow Teflon tape aside for my pipe dope? Do I need both? I rather be on the safe side.
And curious if you did the same on the grill end where the hose attached to the grill. You didn't video that part.

Yes, black ring to downgrade size. We didn't have time to find an all in one size and shape adapter. We used Teflon on all connections except the last where the hose from the grill connects to its own adapter. That is spring loaded. On the grill side, I seem to recall that it was already connected. But if not, I would use Teflon there also. I always seal my brass and metal connections.
What size orifice does the Genesis II natural gas grill use?
Do you mean natural gas to propane conversion or the host to the wall?
What's that paste your're putting on? Is that really needed or just the yellow teflon tape?
Pipe joint compound. Some people use tape, compound or both. Lots of opinions.

I did it and I am just a DIY guy. I don't think you need to adhere to city code just for connecting the grill, but you can call your code people. It is a simple job. We are near Austin.

@@DrBDIY Austin requires permits for everything re: house construction/remodel including natural gas grill hook ups. Cost is $350 and it takes at minimum 5 weeks for a city inspector to get out to your property. I know a guy that was fined $1750 for not getting the permit!

I am not an expert, but you can have an explosion or a fire without a regulator.
Wish yoiu would talk more about how you change the fitting on the grille to accommodate the hose ?

The fitting with the blue cap at 0:19 in the video came with the grill. It just screwed into the provided hose.
@@DrBDIY doesn't open up but theres no converting connection and can I use the same connection for the tank on the gas pipe from house if I piut female fitting ?
You should be able to connect the fitting from the grill into anything that gets is mated to your natural gas connection in the house. Use brass as it won't spark.
Do you need a regulator for natural gas ?
Everything is included with the grill except the connection to wall line as shown in video .

would it work connecting a coupling directly to the valve? or would it be too short for the hose to click on properly?
We were helping a family member - few tools and HD didn't have a direct coupler. You can probably do better.
I just got the same grill (if that’s a Genesis II 435) delivered yesterday. Interesting tho you say the quick connect from Weber is a 3/8? Mine is a 1/2. I have a 3/8 already on the gas line coming from the house so I’ll need to change that out. Wonder why yours is a 3/8 and mine is a 1/2 quick connect. Great video btw. One of the best I’ve seen detailing this.
For others reading, the Weber 410/415/430/435 Quick Connect is a 1/2". The 310/315/325/330/335 are 3/8". This is per the Genesis II Manual.

Our hose was attached. Is yours not attached?
Is it not better to use joint compound for the threads than the tape
I used joint compound only at another location.
I would put some raspberry jam over dope to be 100% sure.
We would have if it worked and made the family member / homeowner comfortable with connecting his gas grill. The new gas grill sat for a year because city slicker was nervous about having his first gas grill in the suburbs. We soon grilled some veggies and wagyu strips.

@@v8monster186 Should be just fine. The pipe doesn't have a big diameter.
Natural gas pressure up to the gas meter's regulator can be as high as 300 pounds PSI. Once it goes through the regulator the pressure is reduced to around 10 ounces PSI. A properly sized regulator can provide a volume of gas at 10 ounces PSI necessary to keep all of your gas appliances running at maximum gas flow all at the same time.
Good Info::: BUT, out here in California 99% of the time the gas pressure in the mains and services are under 60 PSI. Yes there are a few scattered houses located near high pressure lines that could be as high as that but usually the Gas Co. out here will regulate it out at the street first and lower it down to 20 or 30 PSI into the service line up to the house. Oh, and not trying to be a smart A## but gas pressure is regulated into the house at between 7 to 9 inches w/c (inches water column) never expressed as ounces ... They use a simple U gauge with water in it to set to regulator at the meter.

Done different in Texas. 7 to 9 inches of water column is equal to 12.1275 ounces to 15.5925 ounces of pressure per square inch. In Texas a regulator, at least for residences, is required to be between 9 and 12 ounces PSI. Even at 60 pounds PSI going in and 10 ounces PSI going out, that gives you a 96 to 1 ratio between the supply of gas to the meter and the gas from the meter which means it can easily handle the demand of all of the gas appliances in the house all running at once. The only problem would be if you added gas burning appliances that would require a greater gas flow than the regulator was designed to supply to the house. Then the ratio would not make a difference.
An example would be a laundry mat close to where I live. They had mostly smaller single load dryers but replaced them with larger multi-load driers. They failed to calculate what the gas flow to those new driers would be compared to what the regulator was designed for. The result was that if all of the larger dries were running at once the gas pressure would drop low enough that the pilots went out and the burners shut down and none of the driers would be able to heat the air going through the clothes. So for about a week they had to restrict the number of driers that could be used until the regulator could be replaced and certified by the city and the gas company.
As far as the gas in the supply mains is concerned, the restriction to the flow of gas increases with distance so their is a limit to the number of residences that can be hooked up to that main over a distance. If the keep those lines with that pressure on them and there are a lot of residences to supply in that given area then they would necessarily have to have multiple shorter sections coming off either a much bigger pipe or a significantly higher pressure pipe.
The lower pressure main would be safer in case of a rupture since less pressure would mean less gas escaping but a single higher pressure main would be able to supply gas to a lot more residences with a single run of pipe.
Either way works.

Did you not use a conversion kit? Doesn’t it require switching out the orifices and getting a natural gas regulator?
Weber sells both propane and natural gas equipped models. This was a natural gas model so all equipment is included.

@@matthughbennett989 Oh and by the way the natural gas conversion kit works perfectly! Save yourself a ton of headache in the long term by just doing the conversion. Natural gas is also cheaper

Teflon tape AND pipe dope??? Explained as “double seal”. I’ve never heard of this... Inappropriate use of tools. Should have used pipe wrenches on the galvanized pipe and a crescent wrench on the brass fittings.
We were helping a family member get the grill installed quickly for cooking without many tools onsite.
Why do know if all people watch tutorial videos?
