Within the past 2 years (covid) I binged everything and I was surprised how good season 11-12 was! I also enjoy next class alot, mostly bc the seasons were shorter.
Fun fact about Leia's actress - the reason she leaves the show is because the actress got into HARVARD!!!! The choice between acting in a teen soap and going to an ivy league school was just too easy lol.
Not to sound mean, but that was definitely the right choice. Acting just really wasn't for her. But hey, she's way smarter than I'll ever be so I can't knock her too much.
I think Chantay gets way too much hate by the fandom. It’s not the characters fault that she never got any storylines. If anything, she’s the prime example of how the writers failed their Black characters

11:54 you cut it short, but Anya’s line of the “I had a miscarriage. Huge bummer” about her fake pregnancy and her hilarious delivery of the line is one of the most memorable moments of that era of Degrassi for me.
Yeah you can definitely tell the Declan/ Holly J coercion plot line came out in like 2010. Today there’d be no question that it was a non-consensual encounter.
Of course, Holly J was at the top of your list. She is definitely one the the Degrassi characters with the greatest development. Amazing character! I even found myself rooting for her/on her side, when she was still the 'mean girl'.---This is probably a tribute to the way Charlette portrayed her. Can we all agree that Samantha Munro (Anya) did her mf job when it came to emotional scenes? The girl was not afraid to ugly cry and make it seem so real.
This class and the class after them with Claire and ally are my favorite characters. I love manny and Paige but nothing can beat how I felt watching seasons 10 and 11. (The last great seasons of degrassi) the advertisement for The Boiling Point was top tier!
claire story was good with elli, but allie i honestly didn't like with all her mistakes and blamed other people when she got in trouble when her parents found out about everything she did, i mean i guess later seasons she was bettter
Holly J is my favorite Degrassi character simply because of her amazing character development! I love how she grows and changes in a realistic way. The show doesn't necessarily soften her or change her core values or personality. By the end of her time at Degrassi, she's still a type-A, go-getter, ambitious girl who likes to lead and be in power. However, she's not the stereotypical mean girl anymore. She has so much more compassion and empathy for others. And the show didn't have her knitting sweaters and baking cookies to show that she was nice. Holly J just became a nicer version of herself; she didn't change her personality entirely. She softened her edges, let her guard down, and stopped trying so hard to be like her sister. She developed a work ethic and learned some empathy for others. In the end, she was still Holly friggin' J. Down to the last episode. But she was overall kinder, even if she still had the occasional snarky remarks. Given the experiences she had, her change in personality made so much sense and felt organic. I think she exemplifies some of the best character development on the show. In my head, Declan and Holly J got back together in college because I felt like they were endgame. I feel like they're that couple that both need to move on and do their own thing and have their own individual personal growth, then meet up as better and more mature versions of themselves in the future. Also, her friendship with Fiona was one of the best female friendships on the show and you can't change my mind.
Holly I and Declan another toxic relationship. She broke up with him because he wanted to pay for her so she could focus on her studies. Then she starts hooking up with sav right away. Steals from his sister. Then searches for her birth mom and expects her to give up a kidney right away. The mom obviously needs money Fiona pays for her but she was mad at Declan for trying to pay for her. I see no development other than she stopped keeping it real. Holly j in season 7 and 8 were way better.
Oh yeah and never once a good friend to Ana the whole show. When Ana starts dating Owens she craps all over him for no reason yeah great character development. Terrible friend and even worse gf she dumps every guy she dates lol

Holly J's problem with Declan offering to buy her things was that he was overbearing with it; offering to buy her everything instead of realizing she could work for it on her own. With the kidney situation, Holly J could've possibly died without the donation. It makes sense she'd be willing to allow Fiona to give her biological mom the money. She was much more desperate since it was a life-or-death situation. It's not unrealistic to think someone may not act 100% according to their morals if their life is at risk. So yes, she didn't like things being bought for her but when it comes to her life and health, it makes sense she'd be willing to let someone help her out financially. Also Fiona wasn't always asking to buy Holly J things or trying to "buy her friendship". It was more of a gift, and it makes sense considering the two are besties and Holly J supported Fiona through her domestic violence trial and alcohol addiction. Plus there was no way for Holly J to get the money on her own. She couldn't just come up with 20k by herself. She genuinely had no other option but to let Fiona pay. Otherwise, she'd be back on an uncertain waiting list. Also, she also stole the money from Fiona before she dumped Declan. So it's not like she dumped Declan for trying to pay for things, then went and stole his sister's money. She lost her money and had a lapse in judgment. But she learned her lesson and apologized. And with the kidney thing, again, she did apologize for asking such a big thing from her birth mother. With her life at risk, it makes sense she'd be desperate. Also, she's only, what, seventeen? Finding out you're adopted while simultaneously going through kidney failure is a lot all while thinking about college and graduation is a lot. I feel like her development and choices make sense given all that.

Holly J definitely grew on me. At first I was Anti-Holly J like many fans because we saw her as a Paige rip-off but her acting could not be denied . She was one of the strongest Top 5 actors on the show. She definitely carried this season. The true standout character of that season.

Totally agree about Holly J! Felt like two different people but not in a jarring way that indicates bad writing. Sometimes writers totally change a character and it feels random or undeserved. But her development felt so natural. She still had that same core personality of being very type-a and in charge. But she became so much more well-rounded. She became a better friend and less manipulative and more willing to be vulnerable. She learned to work hard and not have things handed to her. She experienced trauma and bullying that taught her to have more empathy for others. At the end of it, she was still bad b*tch Holly J. But she wasn't some one-dimensional mean girl. I love that the show didn't make her lose her edge. Even after her "redemption arc", she was still witty and snarky at times and still incredibly ambitious and take charge. What changed was the way she treated others. The show could've easily kept her as an antagonist and she could've stayed as a mean girl, so I really love the direction they took her character!
I also wish Declan had been in the show in Season 10. He didn't have to have a storyline with Holly J and honestly that would be better probably. I wish Declan had something kinda "bad" happen to him that teaches him to be a better person. He just left in a weird way for me. Fiona was on the show after Declan left, I would have at least liked to see him go visit her every now and then. Honestly it's odd when the whole "Mom on house arrest" happened that we never saw Declan reach out to Fiona. You'd think as siblings that's something they'd both have trouble with and look to each other for stability.
I gotta say I was a big fan of Sav and Holly J. I think they had a nice chemistry that was the precursor to the Clare and Drew relationship that comes later, which I also really like.. Very underrated pairing imo
Same! I really liked Sav and HJ, lowkey more than Sav and Anya. I think bc their thing was just fun, not as much drama, and I liked the development of HJ by season 10 and thought her and Sav were more compatible when they got together. Anya started the show a push over kinda just doing things to appease people, including Sav, and left the show that way…to me lol
Right, their chemistry was so comfortable and drama free. They were cute and flirty but they felt like they could get things done. When I think of a true power couple I think of the dynamic that this couple showcases. They could've been great!
I didn't really like Drew and Clare as a couple personally, but I can 100% agree to being a fan of Sav and Holly J. They felt like a real life couple to me. The way the cared about one another, like during HJ's health issues, and seemed comfortable and settled was a really nice change of pace. Those two had such good character development and it made sense that they would gravitate toward one another.
When they slowed down the timeline from 1 season=1 year to 1 season=1 semester, the actors just got older and older so by the time they graduated, some of those actors were in their 20's. Lyle Lettau (who played Tristan) was on the show for 6 years. When Tristan finally graduated, Lyle was 22!
It's implied that he changed but we never saw him ever pay the price for his actions or understand why what he did was wrong. What makes even less sense is Tristan being his younger brother. Unless they are not on speaking terms or are separated, that NEVER made any sense. Especially after what Owen did and him painting homophobic slurs on the school bus. Degrassi writers really messed up with this. It's such a damn shame.

As a gay person, Zane’s character pissed me off. I was very much a Riley, and “just coming out” was a terrible advice to a kid whose parents were from a homophobic culture.
Chantay was supposed to be class of 2006 but then the writers decided to keep her for some reason. She should’ve been class of 2008 IMO. If she was class of 2011 then that means she was in eight grade in season 4, or she was in grade 9 and she gets held back at a year at some point.
It literally makes no sense. The fact she was in season four. FOUR?!?!?!?!?! And graduates SEVEN seasons later?????? And her character wasn’t even that substantial 😭
One of my favourite characters in this class Would be Anya and the only thing stopping her from being my favourite is that the writers wouldn’t let her grow. She is introduced as a doormat who ends up standing up to her best friend. After that though her standing up to other people doesn’t have the same impact and she never consistently stands her ground. It’s like the writers only wanted to write her as one thing and didn’t see that she had a lot of potential. Instead she is always put back to where she began, or worse her character regress being even more indecisive and a doormat than at the beginning of her arc. She goes from a character that stands up to her bully and chooses what makes her happy to an indecisive girl dating a bully who gets addicted to cocaine and has to join the army because she has no other options.
I'm rewatching this series, and I am completely floored by how they treated Chantay. I just saw an episode where she said that she was into Danny since grade six, yet he graduated before she did? I need to find an interview with this actress, because I don't know what they were thinking
Spinner has the best character development or jay. Holly j if you rewatch is the same judgmental person who tells her friends what to do at the end of the series

Not to mention sav never liked Holly j in prior seasons including at the beginning of this season when she pressured his ex girlfriend to lie and say she’s pregnant. And let’s not forget to mention sav is her best friends ex boyfriend. And she proves she didn’t care about sav at all when she gets bored of him she dumps him. Holly j is a terrible person never has sympathy for her parents going through financial troubles all she cares about is herself. Oh yeah let’s go back to Declan he said no to you helping me financially but let’s not forget the time she stole from his sister who needed a friend.

She became a better friend and less manipulative and more willing to be vulnerable. She learned to work hard and not have things handed to her. She experienced trauma and bullying that taught her to have more empathy for others. At the end of it, she was still bad b*tch Holly J. But she wasn't some one-dimensional mean girl. I love that the show didn't make her lose her edge. Even after her "redemption arc", she was still witty and snarky at times and still incredibly ambitious and take charge. What changed was the way she treated others. The show could've easily kept her as an antagonist and she could've stayed as a mean girl, so I really love the direction they took her character!
I also wish Declan had been in the show in Season 10. He didn't have to have a storyline with Holly J and honestly that would be better probably. I wish Declan had something kinda "bad" happen to him that teaches him to be a better person. He just left in a weird way for me. Fiona was on the show after Declan left, I would have at least liked to see him go visit her every now and then. Honestly it's odd when the whole "Mom on house arrest" happened that we never saw Declan reach out to Fiona. You'd think as siblings that's something they'd both have trouble with and look to each other for stability.

Same! I really liked Sav and HJ, lowkey more than Sav and Anya. I think bc their thing was just fun, not as much drama, and I liked the development of HJ by season 10 and thought her and Sav were more compatible when they got together. Anya started the show a push over kinda just doing things to appease people, including Sav, and left the show that way…to me lol

I didn't really like Drew and Clare as a couple personally, but I can 100% agree to being a fan of Sav and Holly J. They felt like a real life couple to me. The way the cared about one another, like during HJ's health issues, and seemed comfortable and settled was a really nice change of pace. Those two had such good character development and it made sense that they would gravitate toward one another.

When they slowed down the timeline from 1 season=1 year to 1 season=1 semester, the actors just got older and older so by the time they graduated, some of those actors were in their 20's. Lyle Lettau (who played Tristan) was on the show for 6 years. When Tristan finally graduated, Lyle was 22!

Anya dating homophobic Owen who bullied her best friend Riley makes no sense…possibly the least believable relationship ever on Degrassi 🙄
It's implied that he changed but we never saw him ever pay the price for his actions or understand why what he did was wrong. What makes even less sense is Tristan being his younger brother. Unless they are not on speaking terms or are separated, that NEVER made any sense. Especially after what Owen did and him painting homophobic slurs on the school bus. Degrassi writers really messed up with this. It's such a damn shame.

Chantay was supposed to be class of 2006 but then the writers decided to keep her for some reason. She should’ve been class of 2008 IMO. If she was class of 2011 then that means she was in eight grade in season 4, or she was in grade 9 and she gets held back at a year at some point.
It literally makes no sense. The fact she was in season four. FOUR?!?!?!?!?! And graduates SEVEN seasons later?????? And her character wasn’t even that substantial 😭

One of my favourite characters in this class Would be Anya and the only thing stopping her from being my favourite is that the writers wouldn’t let her grow. She is introduced as a doormat who ends up standing up to her best friend. After that though her standing up to other people doesn’t have the same impact and she never consistently stands her ground. It’s like the writers only wanted to write her as one thing and didn’t see that she had a lot of potential. Instead she is always put back to where she began, or worse her character regress being even more indecisive and a doormat than at the beginning of her arc.
She goes from a character that stands up to her bully and chooses what makes her happy to an indecisive girl dating a bully who gets addicted to cocaine and has to join the army because she has no other options.
That Shaggy clip after mentioning Riley’s steroid issue was gold🤣🤣🤣

Holly j is one of my favorite characters in degrassi. She has the best character development in the hole series in my opinion.
Spinner has the best character development or jay. Holly j if you rewatch is the same judgmental person who tells her friends what to do at the end of the series

The very next episode she gets with sav proving she never loved Declan at all. Not to mention sav never liked Holly j in prior seasons including at the beginning of this season when she pressured his ex girlfriend to lie and say she’s pregnant. And let’s not forget to mention sav is her best friends ex boyfriend. And she proves she didn’t care about sav at all when she gets bored of him she dumps him. Holly j is a terrible person never has sympathy for her parents going through financial troubles all she cares about is herself. Oh yeah let’s go back to Declan he said no to you helping me financially but let’s not forget the time she stole from his sister who needed a friend.
