  • A chemical bond is a lasting attraction between atoms, ions or molecules that enables the formation of chemical compounds. The bond may result from the electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions as in ionic bonds or through the sharing of electrons as in covalent bonds.

I know too much about quantum mechanics (never thought that I would) to not chime in and say that this is an incorrect model for what's really happening, though it works fine under most conditions and for most chemistry calculations.

Is it that the unstable atom donates it's loose electron or is it that it accepts the orbital structure of the new atom as a orbital path for the for original atom? The new atom' s orbital being more stable reduces overall potential energy as potential energy has been converted for the stabilization of the system.
This would explain why new energy is needed to break bonding considering the bonded state is of lower potential energy of the aggregate of both atoms potentials.
