    hey there, hope you’re all doing well! this vid is a very detailed, beginner oriented tutorial to make my super basic miniskirt pattern. I’ve featured these skirts in a few videos and also on my instagram, and I think they’re super fun and quick to make in different colours and personalize them for your own wardrobe and style. this is a bit of a longer video, but I wanted to break everything down from making the pattern from your own measurements, and making the skirt itself. please let me know if you enjoyed this video in the comments below, and what else you’d like to see on here! and amazing luck to anyone starting school tomorrow!!

    I watched your video once, got everything I needed, started it. Got lost, watched it 3 to 5 more times, sewed the panels backwards, tore it apart. Sew it the right way, got lost again on the darts, and I'm back. I followed out of order but I'm almost done!!! Just darts and zipper!!! This was my first project sewing EVER!!! THANK YOUUUU YOU DID AMAZING IN EXPLAINING!!!

      Love this!! And I hope you love how your skirt turns out! A little trial and error is the best thing when you're sewing because you learn that much more. Thanks so much for commenting :)

      how did you figure out the darts??? im so confused

    • @nayescrazy
      @nayescrazy Рік тому +2

      @@rdmoo123so the fabric I'm using is stretchy and I wanted it to be a little tighter on the waist. So I pinned about an inch on each side and then sew it and I kept trying it on and sewing it a bit tighter each time then at the end I just made sure they where both the same length. Probably not very practical but that's how I got it to fit the way I wanted.

    This was an amazing tutorial. I’m not sure if this will be helpful to other people, but the way I learned to sew in zippers was to do a baste stitch with the machine, just a very far apart stitch and then iron open the seam. Sew on your zipper, aligned to the stitch, and then seam rip in front of the zipper. I’ve always sewn in the zipper then gone in to fortify the rest of the Seam past the zipper
    Not sure if that makes sense

    Thats a geniusly easy pattern! Thanks a lot♥️ I just have one doubt, you made us measure the waist, add 3 inches to it then half it. Then you cut 4 darts front and back combined which are 1 inch each (i.e. 4 inches in total). So wont it become 1 inch tighter on the waist? Sewing is not exactly mathematics but I thought this might cause an issue later...

    • @selonalice
      @selonalice  3 роки тому +7

      Hey, thanks for the question! technically if you kept on going or left the threads loose then it would come apart, so when you sew up both edges of the slit, you also have to make sure to sew a small line across the top as well (I tried to show this in the video). That should secure the stitches from coming undone anymore. If you wanted a bit of extra security, you could also backstitch a few stitches on your machine just above where you finished seam ripping. All of my skirts have been ok so far tho :) Thanks for watching, and have a great weekend

    • @selonalice
      @selonalice  Рік тому

      Hi Adeola, I'm sorry if this reply is coming a bit late, but I'm so glad you liked the video and made your skirt!! I think you could definitely make a tube dress, but it's a bit of a different pattern. If it was me, I would probably use a stretchy fabric if you want it tight-fitting, and then extend the bottom (if you want it longer), and then extend from the waist upward to the top of the dress. You can measure around the upper chest area to get how wide you need it at the top, and sew in an elastic to make it strapless. I hope this helps if you still need this! I'm sure there are loads of videos on youtube for a tube dress. Good luck :)

    I love this skirt! I’ve got some fabric I want to use but it’s a bit see through, do u think I’d be able to double up the pieces/incorporate some lining?

    • @selonalice
      @selonalice  3 роки тому +3

      I don't see why not! I think you'd just have to be really careful to make sure both pieces are lying super flat against each other as you sew, to make sure you don't get any unevenness/ warping. Definitely use pins! Another thing I might do is make two copies of the skirt, and then sew them together (right sides together) around the top of the waistband before you attach the zipper, then flip it so the right sides are facing out, then continue with the rest of the tutorial as normal (adding the zipper, folding down the waistband, etc). Hope that made some sense haha! let me know if you try it out, good luck!! :)

    Hey! I want to try this as a first sewing project, but I have two questions: what would be the best way to adjust this to a midi skirt length and could I make this skirt with a more stretchy, lightwieght, flowy fabric? Thanks!

    • @selonalice
      @selonalice  Рік тому

      Hi Hannah, yay so glad you are trying this out. I definitely think you could use a lighter, flowy fabric - I would just make sure to add the full inch of ease around your hip measurement (I talk about this around 2mins in).
      To extend the skirt, you would have to extend the pattern down to wherever you want the skirt to land - but instead of measuring straight down like I did (around the 3min mark in the video), I would extend outward on either side on more of a diagonal. Then to cut out the pieces, I would probably cut the back piece on the fold where the centre line is (so instead of cutting out two back pieces, cut one piece on the fold). And then for the front, I would cut it out on the fold BEFORE you cut down the dart lines in the paper (so skip the step at 5:15). Once you have that cut in the fabric, THEN cut your pattern paper up the centre dart. Then take that back to your front skirt piece and only cut up one side of the skirt, rather than on both (the side that you want your dart). I would also add the zipper to the side seam instead of the back - so at 12:11, pin your zipper into one of the side seams, (the instructions in the video for sewing the zipper still apply). I think that would look much nicer for a more flowy skirt.
      I hope this doesn’t sound too complicated! In all honesty I haven’t actually tried this out, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. But if you are looking for more instruction, I found that Jess Dang makes a great Midi skirt w/ a slit tutorial, and so does Rosary Apparel (if you buy her pattern). Hope this was helpful :)

      I used brown craft paper I got from Michaels! But I've also used sheets of newspaper or wrapping paper - whatever you have on hand! hope this helps :)
