What seems to be the most common reason why people tend to like thinking about making their own clothing line is because, frankly, they wanna make it for themselves. So perhaps people should do that first step before actually going for a clothing line. Chances are, one just wants a wardrobe update, not a business.
That’s accurate. For me it was because I was never happy with anything I found in stores, I envisioned beautiful garments ever since I was a kid but the things that were actually available never made me feel like they were worth the money. So I started learning for myself a few years ago finally.

Because making a clothing line is almost always never about you, unless you are declaring that you are part of the demographics you are considering as your customer (which, in some cases, can be bad practice since it's prone to bias)
To add to the sizing comment, YES! Some clothing brands use what's called "vanity sizing", vanity sizing is when they shift their numbers so that you're a "smaller size" when you buy from them as opposed to other competing brands. So for example, I'm a size 2 for one brand, a size 4 for another, and sometimes even a size 0 or a size 8 for other brands. When you buy a pattern, the pattern maker may be using a sizing chart from 50 some odd years ago. This is especially true for vintage patterns. When I tried making my first fitted item I didn't know about vanity sizing and had no idea why I was a size 10 according to the skirt pattern when I was a size 2 according to most of my pants. So, measure and remeasure yourself, and remember that your body isn't the problem (no matter what number fits you best), the problem is the psychological mind games the fashion industry plays in an attempt to make you want to buy their stuff. honestly, vanity sizing doesn't make me want to buy one brand over another, it just makes me want to stick with the same 3 pairs of jeans I've had since 2013
In 2000 I was a size 5 in junior; today I am a size 000. Shoes? Figetaboutit. In 2000 I was a USA 6; today I am a USA 3. Japan 22 stayed consistent for the past couple decades or so because they use actual centimeters.
For inspiration I like watching Micarah Tewers. She taught me that you don't have to be perfect, you just have to have fun doing it. It takes away the perfectionist stress that stops me from sewing.
As someone who just started like 1 and a half year ago and just realize now is Never Ever continue if youre tired, that includes if your eyes hurt back or hands, take a rest put it away for a moment and continue the next day, sometimes I lose track of time and say to myself to push this 3 stitches and you’re done! But It always end up of me rushing and not putting the final detail which always affect on how I feel about my work dont push yourself if you dont feel like it for the sake of it being done.. wishing all of us a good luck in this journey!
Honestly I have to remind myself this every single project!!! You always regret rushing to finish because you don't put the effort you would have put in if you had energy to ensure the sewing is high quality
I have my own fashion labels in Japan and how I started was playing with this software called CLO3D, as I already had a 3D background, it was straightforward, I had to learn the sewing/pattern side of things though, you can measure yourself and either make a 3d character model of yourself or commission someone to do so and you'll basically have the 3d model of your own body ready for you to design clothes on. With such a software, your creativity is the limit, and also since it's a tool for the fashion industry, you can export patterns onto the pattern cutting machines easily. You can prototype designs without wasting fabric ;)
here's an idea i have about not wasting fabric: try to buy natural and neutral colored fabrics. natural fabrics like cotton, wool, linen usually work with a lot of types of clothing. you can buy them in a color you would wear a lot or you can buy them in white color and make everything with it then you can dye it in whatever color you want (natural dyeing techniques recommended)! hope i could help with my not very great knowledge. love you guys, stay safe and thank you Jusuf!
I want to make my own clothes for sustainability reasons but I always hated the fact that my family, as soon as they hear that I'm sowing will be all like "thank god you're finally out of your tomboy phase and taking up womanly hobbies! You'll make a great wife someday." But then I think, what's more punk than not supporting businesses that willingly sell clothes made in sweatshops?
Nothing's more punk than not supporting fast fashion sweatshops. (I was the girliest girl in existence but like fuck, none of us learn these skills to be a good wife, nan, it ain't 1722, I want to learn because I enjoy it, not because I'm good at it- Yet, because that's what a hobby truely is) If you stay learning to sew you should make a leather jacket with spikes with an emblem saying "I'll make a great wife someday."
This is literally how I feel too, my father heavily pressured me into “looking like a girl and having girl hobbies” and it makes me wanna rebel even when it’s something I myself am interested in
geez my parents would love it if i can sew, but we see that as more of a basic life skill anyone can do. Even my brother does better stitch work than I do. Why must it be so gender specific like fr? But again, don't let anyone's words stop you from doing what you like ;)

I sewed all my own clothes in the 1960s for high school, back when you could save money by doing so, and girls could only wear dresses to school. I enjoyed it very much and would like to get back to it, but from your video I see that there are many more resources for learning and creativity. This is wonderful! I would especially like to copy the great dresses of the first half of the 20th century.
@@dsd9772 And I want to go back to a time before TV, football, and climate change. But it ain't going to happen. Dresses are attractive, but so are corsets. Both are restrictive and keep women "in their place". If women want to be functional, pants are more practical and comfortable. Dresses are an option, thank goodness,😐 just as books and baseball are options. Unfortunately, as individuals, we can do nothing about the climate.

@@lindaabraham8715you mentioned at the end of your comment that you like the early 20th century dresses. if you are still interested in sewing by the time i write this, may i suggest watching youtuber "Bernadette Banner?" she likes to sew historically accurate dresses and outfits from the 19th century up until the turn of the century. she is also only one youtube channel among many who specialize in historical fashion (me personally, even as a 16 year old guy, i LOVE 1940s and 1970s fashion and i'd like to start sewing that), many of which specialize in specific decades/eras as well. just a recommendation! good luck!

While I don't wish we lived in a time where girls could *ONLY* where dresses, I certainly wish we lived in a time where people dressed at least decently for school. So, my first project was a tote bag. Went straight to hemming some stuff that had to be hemmed, and then made a bucket hat. None were perfect, but they were there and I love them and use them. I now want to make a skirt, but the main issue was finding the pattern that I liked. I looked at a bunch of tutorials, used so much maths to get the right ratios and learning how skirts work and the amount of pride and joy when the skirt (it was a bit of a squeeze but whatever) came on and I liked it. That pride is what makes me want to continue making my own clothes. Because I am proud of them, and unlike when I crochet my clothes sewing is a bit more neat and less handmade to me.
I am just a beginner, and my first project was a whole dress. It was an interesting journey, and now i have made a second dress and a blouse kind of top. I learned all of my sewing skills on the way, made mistakes, learned from them and improved so much, just with these 3 pieces. I always use left over fabric pieces from the fabric stores, for just 5 bucks. I wanna make my own clothes in the future, with own patterns :)
Sew past tense is: I have sewn/ I sewed. I hope that helps. I've been sewing since I was four years old when my mother and grandmother were driven crazy by my busy hands. They always made clothes for myself, my sister and my cousins so it was natural that I learned at their sides. As I got older and developed my own style, sewing allowed me to really express myself. Additionally, we were dirt poor so hand me downs and thrift stores were my only material sources. That, naturally, forced me to learn pattern making and tailoring. I've been doing it this way for 40 years. I am delighted that it has become fashionable to reuse materials and adapt existing garments and not just a sign that you're broke! i've been following a lot of sewing channels for a while and have been thrift shopping my whole life, but recently got overwhelmed by the actual process of making my own clothes. thank you for restoring my hope. (i have a dufflebag of clothes to thrift flip waiting for me)
I taught myself to sew at 4 years old by hand. I ended up going to fashion design school and now here I am working as a technical designer/pattern maker. I was a tailor intern when I was in my freshman year of design school. Very useful. Keep going learning is key
I wouldn't recommend someone to start with a tshirt bought at a thrift store because most of people who start sewing only have a regular sewing machine not a 4 thread one like you have behind you (i dont know its name in english sorry). Thing is elastic fabrics can be sew with regular sewing machine but the thread will broke eventually sooner than with a 4 thread machine (actually the best is a flatlocker but it's like super expensive because they sell only to pros so...). The best is to start with a canvas coton from a regular shirt, because it'll help you learn all the basics. also don't start to learn sewing by making super complex projects right away. When i started sewing 10 years ago I started with making kind of a tote bag because it was great to understand how the machine works, how to ajust the tension, the lenght, the point used etc. it was also only straight lines so it was way easier to learn how to control the machine. On the topic of fabrics, more than buying from sustainable stores, what makes a fabric sustainable? because half of a clothe sustainability depends on how you take care of it. So before starting to pick fabrics just because you like them, you should learn how to take care of them! how to dry clean them and ... wet clean? them mostly. Also, I recommend you to watch documentaries about fabrics production. To be honest, today, the most sustainable fabrics are linen and wool! Yup cotton is not really sustainable ... it's kind of the palm oil of fabrics. This is just the way I learned- deciding what I wanted to make and learned how to do the techniques needed- that was 40 years ago. After spending 30 years making costumes for stage and screen I like you wanted to pivot and build a small sustainable brand because there was no theatre work. I too learned much more about sustainability and decided the last thing the planet needs is more clothes- so I'm teaching mending, altering and upcycling instead. It's great to hear other people have had a similar journey.
@Annika Victoria is my FAVORITE resource for learning to sew basic wardrobe pieces - they recently (about a year ago) stopped making videos due to health reasons, but their videos have helped me like madness. They have a fantastic beginners diy on adding pockets to clothes you already have!

I started sewing as a small child thanks mum and grandma,! Designed and made my own skirt when I was 7. Sewing can be frustrating, you make silly mistakes even when you are very experienced, what is wonderful about sewing is that you can unpick and start again and you haven't ruined the fabric of you made the same mistake in something made from wood you very often have to get more wood!

Omg sis we are the same person. Hear me out, I started sewing last year during pandemic, and I also stoped buying clothes and wont buy clothes in 2021. and hopefully in future. I'm sewing everything myself. And i recommend it to everyone one. It's the best feeling making your own clothes and than wearing it, a part of the fun in making clothes, the clothes is made to fit you and they are much better kvolity than thoes in store, so they last you longer💕💕💕💕

Omg I had a similar mindset as you! I wanted to be a fashion designer but after learning the toll the fashion industry has on the world, I knew I didn’t want to contribute to that. But now, here I am, really wanting to thrift and make my own clothes!
I'm so glad you mentioned you wanted to start a clothing line but ended up changing your mind because of the harm it does to the environment. It's been a thought that keeps circling back into my head and I think I'm going to step away from new textiles and move towards repurposing and upcycling.
small note about using pre-existing larger clothing at a thrift store for a new garment as someone who regularly volunteers at a thrift store and is also mid to plus size: please be frugal w your purchases if you are altering an item of clothing. there isn't a whole lot of clothing available at thrift stores as it is w its rising popularity and its now even more sparse bc a lot of people want "big tshirts" to wear bc its fashionable when that may be the only thing that larger sized individuals can both afford and fit into. deadstock and donated fabric at thrift stores is great but if you are planning on buying a larger sized clothing item only to alter it and make it smaller please either reconsider or hold off on purchasing until a later date when your midsized and plus sized counterparts have had a chance to get it. it can help more people be sustainable! thank you!
This comment deserves more likes. Unfortunately a lot of people are selfish, (that's not always a bad thing) and don't consider or just don't care about the impact they have on others. It's hard enough to find cute plus size clothes, let alone affordable and good quality ones. I'm a small to mid-sized person but I've seen first hand how hard it is on bigger people. It's not that hard to be mindful ❤️
Speaking of sustainability, old T shirts are an excellent thing to make underwear out of, especially the soft stretchy jersey ones. (You might want to get a special stretch needle for your sewing machine, if you use jersey, though.) It's a great way to reuse shirts from one time events or jobs that you no longer work at, that you'd have no reason to ever wear again. I got a T shirt from a one day flu vaccine event that I worked at a local university for a temp job and that's what I plan on doing with it. Elastic bands at JoAnn fabrics are pretty expensive, though, so it's actually not much cheaper than buying underwear, though. But maybe that's changed since inflation went up so much. I think homemade underwear is better quality, though, because it seems like storebought ones always rip so easily in the same places, almost as if they purposely designed them to do that.

concratulations. most people never come to the point that the system we are cought in - consuming - is killing us. it took me almost 50 years to get that. your bernina sewing machine was one of the newer sewing machine models when i had to learn sewing at school as a teenager. between the time i had to sew and the time i like to sew is a full lifetime. i totaly agree with you that you can start sewing with some garment you like eventhoug you have no basic knowledge. some people want you to make believe thats unprofessional and demotivate you. so go your way.
An additional thing to consider; don't always buy a bigger size in a thrift store so you can size it down or whatever, because larger-sized people have a hard enough time finding clothes that fit in the first place. Sustainability is hard when you can't buy clothes second-hand, so leave some for us bigger folks :) I loved the video though, I especially like that you're coming from it like just learn to make what you want to make - that's always been my philosophy when learning new things, I literally don't have the attention span to learn a bunch of stuff that I won't need right away. I have been used to wearing second hand clothing my whole life, and when I was able to actually afford new clothes, I was soo frustrated with it all the time! I could never find good quality clothing, that would last you for a good while, for a reasonable price. I am also quite a tiny guy, so finding something my size is a whole mission for itself and when I do find it, it has the weirdest measurements or simply a design I don't like!! So I really gave up on trying to find new clothes... And as you said, no one knows your style better than yourself! So it's truly a dream of mine to design my own wardrobe. I finally managed to repair my grandmas old soviet sewing machine. So thank you again for this video! I am going to start to learn patterns for a simple T-shirt and start to draw and make notes in my book! :)
I'm doing the same. No more buying clothes and im trying to upcycle as much as possible and only use natural fibers if I buy anything. Only cotton, wool, linen, and silk. I'm so glad home sewing is coming back! 🙌 Before I sew any major clothing items, I'm learning pattern drafting etc. I HAVE to know how to make pattern adjustments because I'm skinny with DD boobs. And there's never room for my boobs. And people need to repair clothes instead of throwing them away.
I used to be able to get away with just buying and wearing w/e I wanted, but as I get older I realize it’s so important to have a good fit LOL I’ve started tailoring my own stuff now. Sewing is such a crucial skill, especially if you wanna look good. You can get it tailored, but learning how to do it saves me some money 😭😭 plus good quality clothing>>>
I'm a little late to this video but HOLY MOLY our stories are very similar. I wanted to create a fashion brand UNTIL I learned about all of the textile waste created by the fashion industry. I've since also decided to upcycle existing clothes into the clothing designs I created.

My mom is literally a tailor, and most of my clothes (mostly pjs and pants) are made by her. I always had the idea to design and sew my own clothings but I don't have the time nor the patience for that T.T
Me too. My grandma used to be a tailor and I was always interested. But the problem is school (the grade before the last -> bac 1) and the extraordinary price of fabric in my country. We can't really order fabric either but I won't let that stop me.
I started making my own clothes because it was the only way to get the sort of things that I had in mind. Years later, much of my garments and gear, I make myself, and have phased out several kinds of store-bought items entirely. It’s nice to be in a clothing store and not want anything there.

First steps: 1: Find clothes that you like/interest you and search for tutorials on how to make them. 2: Watch/read full tutorials so that you can wrap your mind around how to make clothes. Tip #1: Write out plan/recipe. This is so you can have steps in the correct order & for future reference. Tip #2: Create less waste by sampling clothes first. Once you sample stuff you can get what you like most (remember to order 10-20% more in case of mistakes). Tip #3: Expect Mistakes! Making mistakes is the best way to learn. Always take note of what went wrong to avoid the same mistakes in future. But don't be afraid of mistakes happening- it's part of the process! Tip #4: Avoid massive adjustments by trying on your clothes/works in progress often! Tip #5: Try to avoid sewing in the wrong order (may take practice and mistake-making so plan plan plan). Tip #6: Take breaks! Especially when frustrated or tired since that is when you are more likely to make mistakes and thereby enter a toxic cycle. Your emotional/mental health matters! Listen to what inspires you and what doesn't, this is a long process so enjoying it is key. :)

I found this video because I was at H&M a couple days ago, and I couldn’t find ANYTHING that spoke to me at all. The past few months I’ve only been buying clothing from thrift stores, but they are small stores and haven’t stocked up in forever. After my H&M trip, I realised how much I had started to dislike fast fashion after I had gotten clothing from thrift stores. And then I realised how limited thrift stores are. They can have great things, but I always have clothing in mind that no store have ever made just right. I got myself some yarn, a «knitting for beginners book» and started knitting yesterday. I am currently making the ugliest square ever, but I am so hyped for this journey

This is basically how I got into sewing! The first item I sewed on a machine was a belly dance costume (granted, with the help of my dance teacher). From then on I only ever sewed what I wanted and needed. Right now I'm only sewing or buying second hand (unless the item is reaaaally worth it or still too difficult to make myself, like a bra, or impossible to make yourself, like tights). Sewing has helped me appreciate the true cost of a piece of clothing in a tremendous way.
3:15 that's the most relaxed dog I've ever seen... Making all my clothes from scratch really is the goal but I'm starting with learning how to crochet and knit ! Doing embroidery to let my hands rest but sewing is next !

To add to the sizing comment, YES! Some clothing brands use what's called "vanity sizing", vanity sizing is when they shift their numbers so that you're a "smaller size" when you buy from them as opposed to other competing brands. So for example, I'm a size 2 for one brand, a size 4 for another, and sometimes even a size 0 or a size 8 for other brands.
When you buy a pattern, the pattern maker may be using a sizing chart from 50 some odd years ago. This is especially true for vintage patterns. When I tried making my first fitted item I didn't know about vanity sizing and had no idea why I was a size 10 according to the skirt pattern when I was a size 2 according to most of my pants. So, measure and remeasure yourself, and remember that your body isn't the problem (no matter what number fits you best), the problem is the psychological mind games the fashion industry plays in an attempt to make you want to buy their stuff.

honestly, vanity sizing doesn't make me want to buy one brand over another, it just makes me want to stick with the same 3 pairs of jeans I've had since 2013
In 2000 I was a size 5 in junior; today I am a size 000. Shoes? Figetaboutit. In 2000 I was a USA 6; today I am a USA 3. Japan 22 stayed consistent for the past couple decades or so because they use actual centimeters.
For inspiration I like watching Micarah Tewers. She taught me that you don't have to be perfect, you just have to have fun doing it. It takes away the perfectionist stress that stops me from sewing.

As someone who just started like 1 and a half year ago and just realize now is Never Ever continue if youre tired, that includes if your eyes hurt back or hands, take a rest put it away for a moment and continue the next day, sometimes I lose track of time and say to myself to push this 3 stitches and you’re done! But It always end up of me rushing and not putting the final detail which always affect on how I feel about my work dont push yourself if you dont feel like it for the sake of it being done.. wishing all of us a good luck in this journey!

I have my own fashion labels in Japan and how I started was playing with this software called CLO3D, as I already had a 3D background, it was straightforward, I had to learn the sewing/pattern side of things though, you can measure yourself and either make a 3d character model of yourself or commission someone to do so and you'll basically have the 3d model of your own body ready for you to design clothes on. With such a software, your creativity is the limit, and also since it's a tool for the fashion industry, you can export patterns onto the pattern cutting machines easily. You can prototype designs without wasting fabric ;)

here's an idea i have about not wasting fabric:
try to buy natural and neutral colored fabrics. natural fabrics like cotton, wool, linen usually work with a lot of types of clothing. you can buy them in a color you would wear a lot or you can buy them in white color and make everything with it then you can dye it in whatever color you want (natural dyeing techniques recommended)! hope i could help with my not very great knowledge. love you guys, stay safe and thank you Jusuf!

I’m so glad there are content creators like you who clearly say that producing and buying new clothes is never going to be sustainable! I also just got a sewing machine because I saw your videos about making your own clothes and it inspired me so much! I think this is as sustainable as you can get: reuse old fabric/clothes and make yourself new ones 🥰

I sewed all my own clothes in the 1960s for high school, back when you could save money by doing so, and girls could only wear dresses to school. I enjoyed it very much and would like to get back to it, but from your video I see that there are many more resources for learning and creativity. This is wonderful! I would especially like to copy the great dresses of the first half of the 20th century.

@@dsd9772 And I want to go back to a time before TV, football, and climate change. But it ain't going to happen. Dresses are attractive, but so are corsets. Both are restrictive and keep women "in their place". If women want to be functional, pants are more practical and comfortable. Dresses are an option, thank goodness,😐 just as books and baseball are options. Unfortunately, as individuals, we can do nothing about the climate.

@@lindaabraham8715you mentioned at the end of your comment that you like the early 20th century dresses. if you are still interested in sewing by the time i write this, may i suggest watching youtuber "Bernadette Banner?" she likes to sew historically accurate dresses and outfits from the 19th century up until the turn of the century. she is also only one youtube channel among many who specialize in historical fashion (me personally, even as a 16 year old guy, i LOVE 1940s and 1970s fashion and i'd like to start sewing that), many of which specialize in specific decades/eras as well. just a recommendation! good luck!

So, my first project was a tote bag. Went straight to hemming some stuff that had to be hemmed, and then made a bucket hat. None were perfect, but they were there and I love them and use them. I now want to make a skirt, but the main issue was finding the pattern that I liked. I looked at a bunch of tutorials, used so much maths to get the right ratios and learning how skirts work and the amount of pride and joy when the skirt (it was a bit of a squeeze but whatever) came on and I liked it. That pride is what makes me want to continue making my own clothes. Because I am proud of them, and unlike when I crochet my clothes sewing is a bit more neat and less handmade to me.
I am just a beginner, and my first project was a whole dress. It was an interesting journey, and now i have made a second dress and a blouse kind of top.
I learned all of my sewing skills on the way, made mistakes, learned from them and improved so much, just with these 3 pieces. I always use left over fabric pieces from the fabric stores, for just 5 bucks.

Sew past tense is: I have sewn/ I sewed. I hope that helps. I've been sewing since I was four years old when my mother and grandmother were driven crazy by my busy hands. They always made clothes for myself, my sister and my cousins so it was natural that I learned at their sides. As I got older and developed my own style, sewing allowed me to really express myself. Additionally, we were dirt poor so hand me downs and thrift stores were my only material sources. That, naturally, forced me to learn pattern making and tailoring. I've been doing it this way for 40 years. I am delighted that it has become fashionable to reuse materials and adapt existing garments and not just a sign that you're broke! i've been following a lot of sewing channels for a while and have been thrift shopping my whole life, but recently got overwhelmed by the actual process of making my own clothes. thank you for restoring my hope. (i have a dufflebag of clothes to thrift flip waiting for me)
I taught myself to sew at 4 years old by hand. I ended up going to fashion design school and now here I am working as a technical designer/pattern maker. I was a tailor intern when I was in my freshman year of design school. Very useful. Keep going learning is key

I wouldn't recommend someone to start with a tshirt bought at a thrift store because most of people who start sewing only have a regular sewing machine not a 4 thread one like you have behind you (i dont know its name in english sorry). Thing is elastic fabrics can be sew with regular sewing machine but the thread will broke eventually sooner than with a 4 thread machine (actually the best is a flatlocker but it's like super expensive because they sell only to pros so...). The best is to start with a canvas coton from a regular shirt, because it'll help you learn all the basics. also don't start to learn sewing by making super complex projects right away. When i started sewing 10 years ago I started with making kind of a tote bag because it was great to understand how the machine works, how to ajust the tension, the lenght, the point used etc. it was also only straight lines so it was way easier to learn how to control the machine.
On the topic of fabrics, more than buying from sustainable stores, what makes a fabric sustainable? because half of a clothe sustainability depends on how you take care of it. So before starting to pick fabrics just because you like them, you should learn how to take care of them! how to dry clean them and ... wet clean? them mostly. Also, I recommend you to watch documentaries about fabrics production. To be honest, today, the most sustainable fabrics are linen and wool! Yup cotton is not really sustainable ... it's kind of the palm oil of fabrics.

You'll learn everything about weaves, fibre, what is actually fabric, how is a garnment made today, some notes about sustanability etc. It's like the bible of fabrics. honestly it's a bit expensive but it's really important knowledge that people often dont learn when learning how to sew. and I'm not shaming anybody, I didn't know shit about how to take care of fabrics and the importance of mixing fabrics that can be cleaned together before 2018! and I started sewing in 2011... now that I know more about that it's way easier to make stuff than it was before.

This is just the way I learned- deciding what I wanted to make and learned how to do the techniques needed- that was 40 years ago. After spending 30 years making costumes for stage and screen I like you wanted to pivot and build a small sustainable brand because there was no theatre work. I too learned much more about sustainability and decided the last thing the planet needs is more clothes- so I'm teaching mending, altering and upcycling instead. It's great to hear other people have had a similar journey.
@Annika Victoria is my FAVORITE resource for learning to sew basic wardrobe pieces - they recently (about a year ago) stopped making videos due to health reasons, but their videos have helped me like madness. They have a fantastic beginners diy on adding pockets to clothes you already have!

I started sewing as a small child thanks mum and grandma,! Designed and made my own skirt when I was 7. Sewing can be frustrating, you make silly mistakes even when you are very experienced, what is wonderful about sewing is that you can unpick and start again and you haven't ruined the fabric of you made the same mistake in something made from wood you very often have to get more wood!

I'm sewing everything myself. And i recommend it to everyone one. Omg I had a similar mindset as you! I wanted to be a fashion designer but after learning the toll the fashion industry has on the world, I knew I didn’t want to contribute to that. But now, here I am, really wanting to thrift and make my own clothes!
I'm so glad you mentioned you wanted to start a clothing line but ended up changing your mind because of the harm it does to the environment. It's been a thought that keeps circling back into my head and I think I'm going to step away from new textiles and move towards repurposing and upcycling.

small note about using pre-existing larger clothing at a thrift store for a new garment as someone who regularly volunteers at a thrift store and is also mid to plus size:
please be frugal w your purchases if you are altering an item of clothing. there isn't a whole lot of clothing available at thrift stores as it is w its rising popularity and its now even more sparse bc a lot of people want "big tshirts" to wear bc its fashionable when that may be the only thing that larger sized individuals can both afford and fit into. deadstock and donated fabric at thrift stores is great but if you are planning on buying a larger sized clothing item only to alter it and make it smaller please either reconsider or hold off on purchasing until a later date when your midsized and plus sized counterparts have had a chance to get it. it can help more people be sustainable! thank you!
This comment deserves more likes. Unfortunately a lot of people are selfish, (that's not always a bad thing) and don't consider or just don't care about the impact they have on others. It's hard enough to find cute plus size clothes, let alone affordable and good quality ones. I'm a small to mid-sized person but I've seen first hand how hard it is on bigger people. It's not that hard to be mindful ❤️
Speaking of sustainability, old T shirts are an excellent thing to make underwear out of, especially the soft stretchy jersey ones. (You might want to get a special stretch needle for your sewing machine, if you use jersey, though.) It's a great way to reuse shirts from one time events or jobs that you no longer work at, that you'd have no reason to ever wear again. I got a T shirt from a one day flu vaccine event that I worked at a local university for a temp job and that's what I plan on doing with it. Elastic bands at JoAnn fabrics are pretty expensive, though, so it's actually not much cheaper than buying underwear, though. But maybe that's changed since inflation went up so much. I think homemade underwear is better quality, though, because it seems like storebought ones always rip so easily in the same places, almost as if they purposely designed them to do that.

concratulations. most people never come to the point that the system we are cought in - consuming - is killing us. it took me almost 50 years to get that. your bernina sewing machine was one of the newer sewing machine models when i had to learn sewing at school as a teenager. between the time i had to sew and the time i like to sew is a full lifetime.
i totaly agree with you that you can start sewing with some garment you like eventhoug you have no basic knowledge. some people want you to make believe thats unprofessional and demotivate you. so go your way.
An additional thing to consider; don't always buy a bigger size in a thrift store so you can size it down or whatever, because larger-sized people have a hard enough time finding clothes that fit in the first place. Sustainability is hard when you can't buy clothes second-hand, so leave some for us bigger folks :) I loved the video though, I especially like that you're coming from it like just learn to make what you want to make - that's always been my philosophy when learning new things, I literally don't have the attention span to learn a bunch of stuff that I won't need right away. I've been looking into making my own clothes, and this help immensely, thanks!

I have been wanting to learn to sew my own clothes for quite a while now. I have been used to wearing second hand clothing my whole life, and when I was able to actually afford new clothes, I was soo frustrated with it all the time! I could never find good quality clothing, that would last you for a good while, for a reasonable price. I am also quite a tiny guy, so finding something my size is a whole mission for itself and when I do find it, it has the weirdest measurements or simply a design I don't like!! So I really gave up on trying to find new clothes...
And as you said, no one knows your style better than yourself! So it's truly a dream of mine to design my own wardrobe.
I finally managed to repair my grandmas old soviet sewing machine.

I'm doing the same. No more buying clothes and im trying to upcycle as much as possible and only use natural fibers if I buy anything. Only cotton, wool, linen, and silk. I'm so glad home sewing is coming back! 🙌 Before I sew any major clothing items, I'm learning pattern drafting etc. I HAVE to know how to make pattern adjustments because I'm skinny with DD boobs. And there's never room for my boobs.
And people need to repair clothes instead of throwing them away.

I'm a little late to this video but HOLY MOLY our stories are very similar. I wanted to create a fashion brand UNTIL I learned about all of the textile waste created by the fashion industry. I've since also decided to upcycle existing clothes into the clothing designs I created.

Me too. My grandma used to be a tailor and I was always interested. But the problem is school (the grade before the last -> bac 1) and the extraordinary price of fabric in my country. We can't really order fabric either but I won't let that stop me.

I started making my own clothes because it was the only way to get the sort of things that I had in mind. Years later, much of my garments and gear, I make myself, and have phased out several kinds of store-bought items entirely. It’s nice to be in a clothing store and not want anything there.

Girl no if you have a dream to start a clothing line God placed that in your heart. And there’s so many ways to make it sustainable and good for the planet! Don’t give up! Blessings to you
First steps:
1: Find clothes that you like/interest you and search for tutorials on how to make them.
2: Watch/read full tutorials so that you can wrap your mind around how to make clothes.
Tip #1: Write out plan/recipe. This is so you can have steps in the correct order & for future reference.
Tip #2: Create less waste by sampling clothes first. Once you sample stuff you can get what you like most (remember to order 10-20% more in case of mistakes).
Tip #3: Expect Mistakes! Making mistakes is the best way to learn. Always take note of what went wrong to avoid the same mistakes in future. But don't be afraid of mistakes happening- it's part of the process!
Tip #4: Avoid massive adjustments by trying on your clothes/works in progress often!
Tip #5: Try to avoid sewing in the wrong order (may take practice and mistake-making so plan plan plan).
Tip #6: Take breaks! Especially when frustrated or tired since that is when you are more likely to make mistakes and thereby enter a toxic cycle. Your emotional/mental health matters! Listen to what inspires you and what doesn't, this is a long process so enjoying it is key. :)

I found this video because I was at H&M a couple days ago, and I couldn’t find ANYTHING that spoke to me at all. The past few months I’ve only been buying clothing from thrift stores, but they are small stores and haven’t stocked up in forever. After my H&M trip, I realised how much I had started to dislike fast fashion after I had gotten clothing from thrift stores. And then I realised how limited thrift stores are. They can have great things, but I always have clothing in mind that no store have ever made just right. I got myself some yarn, a «knitting for beginners book» and started knitting yesterday. I am currently making the ugliest square ever, but I am so hyped for this journey

This is basically how I got into sewing! The first item I sewed on a machine was a belly dance costume (granted, with the help of my dance teacher). From then on I only ever sewed what I wanted and needed. Right now I'm only sewing or buying second hand (unless the item is reaaaally worth it or still too difficult to make myself, like a bra, or impossible to make yourself, like tights). Sewing has helped me appreciate the true cost of a piece of clothing in a tremendous way.
I also want to be sustainable and sew my own clothes so thank you for this!

3:15 that's the most relaxed dog I've ever seen... Making all my clothes from scratch really is the goal but I'm starting with learning how to crochet and knit ! Doing embroidery to let my hands rest but sewing is next !
If you’re looking for a way to get motivated into making your own clothes because let’s be honest it takes effort, I recommend Michera Tewers (sorry for the spelling), she’s a bit chaotic but it makes you realise that as long as you have a design it’s not too difficult to conceptualise and make clothes
