I was there that night,, sitting spellbound at a table a few feet from the stage.. Was I really that close to Jimi Hendrix? I remember Joni was giddy with excitement when he arrived,. And how strange to hear, at the end, the sound of my little hands clapping, clapping ..

This is what 1968 sounded like to me, it is like being shot straight back there. I learned to play guitar in alternative tunings because of Joni and I remember when I worked out how to play this, nothing sounded like her and I love her music to this day (now almost 65).

Here is an interview Joni Mitchell did in 1991 regarding that evening. In addition, both Jimi Hendrix and Mitch Mitchell, drummer for The Jimi Hendrix Experience, documented the evening in their diaries.
    March 19 (Jimi Hendrix journal)
"Arrived in Ottawa. Beautiful hotel. Strange people…Beautiful dinner. Talks with Joni Mitchell on the phone. I think I’ll record her tonight with my excellent tape recorder (knock on wood). Hmmm…can’t find any wood…everything’s plastic. Beautiful view.
Marvelous sound on the first show. Good on second. Good recording. Went down to the little club to see Joni, fantastic girl with heaven words. We all got to party. OK, millions of girls. Listen to tape and smoke up at the hotel."
    March 20
"We left Ottawa City today. I kissed Joni goodbye….”
Mitch Mitchell, wrote about that night in his memoir...
“We heard of this girl singer in town, called Joni Mitchell. Hendrix and I had these portable Sony tape recorders, huge things that we dragged ‘round the world. So we went to this little folk club, after our gig, with Hendrix’s tape machine. We were amazed, she was wonderful. So we taped the show and then went back to the hotel.
Turns out, not only is she staying in the same hotel, but she’s on the same floor. So we went back to the room, just the three of us, played the tape back, compared notes, that kind of thing. It’s two in the morning, but we’re keeping things low and we’d been there about an hour and the manager comes up. He went fucking berserk. “You can’t have guests in your room.” What! We couldn’t believe it. We were all staying on the same floor, for God’s sake. So we said, “We can’t have any guests in this room, right?” "Yes.” So we moved everything into my room. We got chased out of there and went to Joni’s. This went on all night.
Unfortunately, the tape recorder and the tape were stolen the next day, so end of story on that, but strange guy. Who knows what it was? Black man, white man, white girl, I don’t know.”
Here is Joni Mitchell describing the evening in the 1991 interview.
"Hendrix, reel-to-reel in hand, came into the club and shyly introduced himself.
“My name is Jimi Hendrix and I was just signed to Reprise, the same label that you’re on. Could I tape your show?” “Sure,” Joni said. “So, he put the reel-to-reel down." “Here’s the mic and here’s me and he put it down on the side, on the left, facing the stage, and he spent the whole show leaning over it and watching levels all the time. He didn’t put it there and back off. He engineered it all the way through. Once in a while, he’d glance up and smile and go back to this thing.
After it was over we all went to a party that the promoter put on and I’m looking right and he’s looking left. This guy came up to them and said, “What sign is Joni?” And they said, “Scorpio.” And he said, “I’ve got all these songs. I’ve got one for every sign in the zodiac. I could pull any girl with these.” And Jimi said, “Well, you won’t be pulling her.” I don’t have much memory of an asshole coming up to me and singing a Scorpio song, hoping to sweep me off my feet.
We didn’t stay there very long and we went back to the hotel… And we went to my room first and we played back portions of his show, sitting on the floor like a campfire, really close to it. Not loud. And sitting cross-legged around it. Well, the hotel dick came up and told us to break it up. They didn’t like the idea of three hippies sitting around, especially one black, alone in the room in this conservative hotel. So we left and we went to Mitch’s room, and we had it down so low, we were huddled over it. And they broke it up again…
We went from my room to Jimi’s room to Mitch’s room, and the cop kept showing up and breaking us up, and we kept rotating around. In the course of the evening, it was a really sweet visit with both of them.”

@@suzycreemcheeze446 highley, I think so too! We know how crazy the government was about certain culture influences and the irrational fear of the soviets marching up American streets. This is a major reason why they hated Dr. King. We know that they assassinated Dr. King. They even killed Hemingway. So I wouldn’t be surprised if the irrationality of communist fear lead to them focusing on key figures of the hippie movement, a movement that they viewed as “dangerous.” But, Hendrix did suffer from Sleep Apnea and would also choke in his sleep. Lithofayne spoke about how she would have to wake up while as he was choking, and turn him over on his side. I’m sure the German figure skater woman he was with that night didn’t know any of this. Anyway, very sad stuff. RIP to Hendrix 🙏🏽

Imagine that...having the legendary Mr. Jimi Hendrix asking to record your concert up on the front stage area with his reel to reel recorder. Due to the fact Joni Mitchell was such an exceptional songwriter, musician, guitarist, vocalist, performer during that era. Final key to opening up that situation...being on the same label. Incredible, along with finding that lost master tape.

Jimi often brought that same tape recorder to aftershow gigs he would play at local clubs, so he could later go back and listen to himself. Sometimes, he wouldn't even be playing guitar, he would be on bass just jamming with other musicians in front of a very small club crowd, same size as the club Joni Mitchell was in, at 2:00 in the morning.
There's a famous recording out there of him jamming in New York at a club called The Scene. A drunk Jim Morrison of The Doors showed up and sat in for a couple songs. That recording was also made by Jimi on the same recorder he used to record Joni Mitchell. It's much more noisy, because it's a loud club with a rock band. Nowhere near the same clarity as you hear on Joni Mitchell's recording.
At one point while Jim Morrison is rolling around on the floor moaning a lot, Jimi leans down to the recording mic to tell the audience, that's Jim Morrison of The Doors on the floor. He describes a little bit of the action as starts playing The Beatles song "Tomorrow Never Knows" on his guitar.
That was actually the second time Jim Morrison had shown up at a club wanting to sit with Jimi as he jammed. The first time, he was also drunk and Jimi turned him down. When he said to Jimi Hendrix, don't you know who I am? Jimi told him, yeah I know who you are, and I'm Jimi Hendrix, then just ignored him after that.
So I guess the second time Jim Morrison showed up, drunk and asking to jam, Jimi decided to let him up since he knew he was recording the whole thing.
Morrison was really drunk. The club is loud and noisy. It's a rock band, so the clarity is nowhere near as good as the Joni Mitchell recording.
At one point, Jimi Hendrix leans down into the mic to tell everyone that's Jim Morrison on the floor as you can hear Jim loudly moaning. Hendrix also starts playing The Beatles song, Tomorrow Never Knows as he's giving commentary.
The recording is horrible viewed as Jimi Hendrix / Jim Morrison collaboration. But once you understand what it really is, just Jimi making a personal recording for himself to listen to later, then it's kind of funny.
He probably couldn't wait to get home to play back that one, for himself and his friends!! You can find it on UA-cam.

The Dawntreader was written for David Crosby.⛵“Yes, David can claim that one. At the time, he was thinking about what to call his boat. The name of it, when he purchased it, was The Mayan, which he kept. But I liked Dawntreader, which comes from a children’s fairy tale about a boat that sails off the edge of the earth - assuming that it’s flat - and goes on some beautiful trip. That was my suggestion. And the music of The Dawntreader curves and undulates like a boat on water.” JONI

He had a lot of experience in recording studios. Not just in his own career, but for several years prior to it as a backing musician for numerous other artists.
The engineers in England were shocked at some of his recording ideas. He wanted amps at full volume and even told them where to put the mics. They thought he was crazy and it wouldn't work. He said trust me it'll sound great.
They followed his advice, in accordance to producer Chaz Chandler, it sounded great. Problem was, his preferred way of recording his guitar parts in the studio was so loud it shook the whole building. The other tenants complained so much that they had to go to a different recording studio to finish the album.

The CD of this in the Joni Mitchell Archives Boxed Set Volume 2 has an intro to this song. It in she calls it "All His Sea-dreams Come to Me." Perhaps it was too long a title for her first LP, Song to a Seagull, so it became The Dawntreader. In the book that came with the box set she talks about Jimi Hendrix recording it. She said he didn't just start the recorder and join the audience. He worked the dials throughout the performance. She said she sang to him. I listened carefully to the album version compared to this one, and the live version is better. There seems to be two guitars in the album version, but they're sonically smeared. The second guitar doesn't seem to be her style, maybe Crosby joined in? Unsure. But it isn't clear and is irritating. Her voice isn't as bad, but in Jimi's version it is clear as day. Jimi said it was an excellent recorder. Someone called it a Sony portable. I suppose in contrast to a studio deck bolted to the floor it was, but even in the photo above you can see its size. Joni said Jimi came with a huge box. Still, for 1968 to have such clarity! Worth the bulk I think.

He had a sold-out concert in town. Also, as someone who's familiar with Jimi Hendrix, it wasn't uncommon for him to bring this new tape recorder of his to gigs.
There's a famous recording he made of Jim Morrison from the Doors singing while he plays guitar at a jam in New York City. Morrison was drunk and wanted to join on vocals, Jimi let him and Morrison ended up on the floor doing a lot of moaning.
Jimi was recording the concert on that same tape recorder because he wanted to listen to his own playing later when he got back home. At one point, he's giggling and saying that's Jim Morrison on the floor while he starts playing the rift from the Beatles Tomorrow Never Knows.

  • @davidkey8172
    @davidkey8172 2 роки тому

My understanding of this tape is it was stolen after Jimi recorded one of his own concerts in Rochester, NY. Jimi's reel to reel was stolen with all his recordings at a party. It was never determined who stole it and the tapes. So if this recording was among the stolen tapes(I'm assuming) who had them and where did they come from? Where are the where abouts of Jimi's self recorded shows?

One thing you always hear in Joni's songs is that she has truly LIVED. She hasn't been one of those artists who retreats from the world into their own room and lives in books and records. She has traveled, she's worked, she's known heartache and joy, she's been poor and well-off. She's gotten to know so many other people's stories from all walks of life, artists, celebrities, soldiers, everyday people. She brings all these stories to her songs and it gives them a foundation in real life which gives them a power and resonance that many other songwriters can't achieve.

This is so special. My two favorite artists of all time are Jimi Hendrix and Joni Mitchell. This recording is so clean it's mind-blowing. I'm just going to have to buy this set. I also just want to say that the poetry of The Dawntreader is a master class on its own. People use alliteration in songs and poetry and to my ear it always sounds kind of forced and self conscious. None of that here. "Peridots and periwinkle blue medallions, Gilded galleons spilled across the ocean floor." Every time I hear it I just go WOW! Nobody paints with words like Joni. Nobody.

The Dawntreader (Joni Mitchell) Written for David Crosby
    Peridots and periwinkle blue medallions
Gilded galleons spilled across the ocean floor
Treasure somewhere in the sea and he will find where
Never mind their questions there's no answer for
The roll of the harbor wake
The songs that the rigging makes
The taste of the spray he takes
    And he learns to give
He aches and he learns to live
    He stakes all his silver
On a promise to be free
    Mermaids live in colonies
All his sea dreams come to me
City satins left at home, I will not need them
I believe him when he tells of loving me
Something truthful in the sea your lies will find you
Leave behind your streets he said and come to me
Come down from the neon nights
Come down from the tourist sights
Run down 'til the rain delights you
    You do not hide
    Sunlight will renew your pride
    Skin white by skin golden
Like a promise to be free
    Dolphins playing in the sea
All his sea dreams come to me
Seabird I have seen you fly above the pilings
I am smiling at your circles in the air
I will come and sit by you while he lies sleeping
    Fold your fleet wings
I have brought some dreams to share
A dream that you love someone
A dream that the wars are done
A dream that you tell no one but the grey sea
    They'll say that you're crazy
And a dream of a baby
Like a promise to be free
    Children laughing out to sea
All his sea dreams come to me
All his sea dreams come to me
